Rockman EXE Rip-off? Not So Fast...

From the sprites to the isometric camera angle, Otodamster for the Nintendo DS appears to be an EXE knock off, but in actuality, it's far from it. Other than the graphics, Otodamaster has nothing in common with Rockman.

What is it? Otodamaster involves the act of catching various monsters for use in combat. Sounds like Pokemon, right? Sort of. From here, things get really interesting: in order to catch creatures, you have to utilize the DS microphone to pick up sound. Simply hold up your DS to a barking dog, a car horn, a blender, or anything that makes noise to successfully make a catch. The better the frequency, the higher chance of a catching a desired creature.

Unfortunately, the title has yet to see a release outside of Japan's shores.

  1. Well, the bedroom looks oddly like Lan's, I still think it look similar of EXE sprite.
But as for creatures, they almost look the same as in Pokemon.
You think it's original? Surely the Microphone can catching monsters is original.
But the design... not so originally.

  5. The graphics do look a lot like EXE. From the description it sounds rather interesting, but I'm not too much into games that involve catching monsters anymore (for some reason Tales of Symphonia 2 is an exception to the rule, it must be the humor and the characters).

  6. Protodude, I do hope you intentionally named one of your monsters "Rock". Ha ha.

Maybe you should also look at Custom Battler Bomber Man, which also sort of resembles EXE>

  7. Meh, people calling things a Pokemon knock-off just because of the monster collecting aspect is plain stupid.

It's not Pokemon's idea in general from the start. If I recall, there used to be a Dungeons and Dragons setup where you can catch monsters. It wasn't officially D&D, but still, the concept was still there way before Pokemon.

I personally thing, if you can't have a good reason to back up calling it a rip-off of Pokemon without using the words "Monster Collecting" or "Monster Catching" or "Monster Battling" then seriously, do some research. Bakegyamon? now THAT is a rip-off of so many things in general. Pokemon, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh.

I agree though that this game sounds interesting.

  8. Sounds annoying to me. Running around everywhere to find something that makes noise, just so that the DS's mic can pick it up? It's not like it can distinguish between stuff, just scream in a shrill voice. XD

  9. @GraveTheUndead: No, that's not stupid. A lot of things are credited to people who didn't come up with the idea, but made it popular. It's not stupid to say something is copying something else. We want that so that we can steer away from particularly non-innovative games.

Not speaking about this game specifically though.
