Capcom Seeking Partners for Mega Man Battle Network 20th Anniversary Products in 2021

If you're a Battle Network fan, you might want to keep a close eye on 2021. Today, Capcom Japan have begun recruiting licensing partners to develop Mega Man Battle Network 20th anniversary products. These include toys, action figures, apparel, special events and other consumer goods.

The very existence of this recruitment program alone suggests that Capcom has big plans in store for Battle Network's 20th. It signals their intent on celebrating the anniversary under an official banner, much like Mega Man X's 25th anniversary. In 2016, Capcom previously recruited partners for Mega Man X's 25th anniversary, an event wholly separate from the franchise's overall 30th anniversary. The result was a number of commemorative X goods from new figures and soundtracks to two critically and commercially successful collections: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2.

Of course, it's much too early for Capcom to announce anything concrete. There's plenty of time between now and next March. Only time will tell, I suppose.

"Super Mega Man" Joins Rockman X DiVE This Week

Another character joins the Deep Log as part of the Rockman and Rockman X DiVE collaboration event! Last week it was Mega Man, Proto Man and Roll. And now, it's "Super Mega Man" from Mega Man 7.

Super Mega Man, an S Rank character, will be out next Thursday after the usual maintenance period. He comes with an impressive Triple Jump and two skills: Supporting Beat where Beat acts as a helper attacking enemies on-screen no matter how far they are, and Rocket Buster, a homing attack that will dealt damage on his way back to Super Mega Man.

Let us know what you think about Super Mega Man in the comments! Isn't the animation from the character screen wonderful?

Help Capcom to Improve Rockman X DiVE

As promised by the development team a week ago, a survey to voice our opinions about Rockman X DiVE has finally go online. Find all the details below!

Mega Man Franchise Now at 36 Million Units Total, Mega Man 11 at 1.2 Million Units

Capcom has updated their Game Series Sales and Platinum Titles pages to reflect the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2020. Unfortunately, we do not have any data on how well Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection performed this past quarter. Nevertheless, we do have some good news:

  • Mega Man 11 saw an additional 200,000 units in sales between November 2019 to March 31st, 2020. The game has now officially sold 1.2 million units. Mega Man 11 continues to be the fastest selling Mega Man title in well over 25 years.

At the end of the day, the franchise remains in a healthy state. Mega Man 11, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2 and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 continue to show strong legs. I think it's safe to say that those discounted sales across multiple storefronts really helped. Now, as for ZX/Zero Legacy Collection... it's difficult to pin-point how it's doing. Pending official word from Capcom, we can only speculate.

We'll let you know if we hear anything concrete.

Wonder Festival Fall 2020 Cancelled; New Mega Man Figures Will Be Shown "Later"

Wonder Festival organizers announced that Wonder Festival Fall 2020 has been cancelled over COVID-19 concerns. The event would have taken place on November 1st, 2020.

Traditionally, new Mega Man figures and toys are revealed at Wonder Festival. Manufacturers such as Kotobukiya, Good Smile and Sentinel have used the event to show off prototypes, among other tantalizing details. Although Wonder Festival 2021 is still on track to take place on February 7th, 2021, these companies still intend on sharing news about the latest Mega Man figures this year.

Representatives from Kotobukiya, Sentinel and Mega House (makers of the upcoming Rockman.EXE vs Forte.EXE diorama) informed me that they will "pursue different opportunities this year" to share updates on existing products and announcements about new Mega Man figures. Due to the ongoing pandemic, development and distribution of said products may be affected. There is no guarantee that these products, both previously announced and unannounced, will make their respective target release dates.

More information on this topic will be shared in the near future.

Surprisingly enough, he even ventured from his X series comfort zone and draw two fantastic pieces of Rock Volnutt and Tron Bonne from the Rockman DASH series! You can find all the Rockman art after the break!

"Battle Chip Gate" Homebrew Turns Your Game Boy Advance into a Working BCG!

The Mega Man Battle Network homebrew scene continues to amaze once again with the release of "Battle Chip Gate Homebrew"! Created by The Rockman EXE Zone's Greigamaster, this handy app turns a Game Boy Advance with a flash cartridge into a real, working Battle Chip Gate. Simply put, you don't need to fork over an arm and a leg to buy a physical Battle Chip Gate or its complementary Battle Chips anymore. I mean, unless you really want to. It's a neat commodity.

Anyway! This app is 100% compatible with both English and Japanese versions of Mega Man Battle Network 4, 4.5, 5, 6 and Mega Man Zero 3. Users can create folders for easy access to favorite chips and slot-in Program Advance combos automatically, too! Sure, the novelty of physically slotting chips into the gate will be missed... but this app is so much easier to use!

If it piques your interest, head on over to TREZ and read more about it!

Nicely done, Greigamaster! You've really outdone yourself!

Noriyuki Iwadare is joined by Rockman Unity's Ucchy-san, MCU, Noriyuki Kamikura, Daisuke Miyazak, Mari Matsubara, Atsushi Enomoto and even the Hanayashiki Park Rockman and Blues mascots. What a fun little gesture, no?

It sounds like there might be more stay-at-home performances in the near future, too! Make sure to subscribe to Noriyuki Iwadare;s official YouTube channel for the latest!

Icon Heroes Acquires Mega Man License for New Figures and Goods

Collectable manufacturer Icon Heroes has announced that they are partnering with Capcom to produce a brand-new line of Mega Man products. Figures, bobble heads, pins, key rings and other odds and ends are currently in production.

While no further details or images are available at this time, artists and toy designers for the Mega Man line told me that they are aiming to create some "real high quality stuff". You can get an idea of Icon Heroes' quality at their website here. I'm partial to their line of DC Comics figures and statues. Nice stuff.

We'll have more news on this front sooner than later. I may have a scoop or two coming up soon!

Mega Man & Bass FC "Demake" Fan-Game In The Works

For those of you with good longterm memory, you may recall a small series of fan-games by a group called Mend who produced "de-makes" of both Rockman 7 and Rockman 8. These de-makes became known as Rockman 7FC and Rockman 8FC ("FC" meaning "Famicom"). Way back in 2009, we reported that the group was also looking at de-making Rockman Rockman (Mega Man Powered Up), Rockman Mega World (Mega Man: The Wily Wars) and Rockman & Forte (Mega Man & Bass). Unfortunately those projects never reached completion.

However, there is now renewed hope for a Rockman & Forte de-make in the form of "Mega Man & Bass FC"!

Get Equipped with Official Rockman Virtual Meeting Backgrounds

Is your living room, kitchen or bedroom not quite up to snuff for those professional or personal virtual meetings?

Thanks to Rockman Unity, now you can meg-ify your Zoom meetings with the Rockman 1 title screen, Dr. Wily's lab, the sprawling green pastures of Rockman 2's ending cutscene or the Rockman 2 stage select screen. Hit up those links and give 'em a download. They're pixel perfect, too! You can read how to set up Zoom backgrounds here.

Remember: wash your hands, don't touch your face and if at all possible, stay home. If you happen to find yourself completely bored, there's 154 different Mega Man games you could play, too. I guarantee there's at least one or two in there you haven't played. I, for one, really should knock out Super Adventure Rockman one of these days.

Don't Forget to Backup Your Capcom Unity and Mega Man Legends 3 Devroom Content!

In case you haven't heard, a number of major changes are coming to Capcom Unity on May 6th. You can read more about that here. Long story short, 14-years worth of user created content, forum posts, blog posts, private messages, etc. will disappear. That includes everything from the Mega Man Legends 3 Devroom, too.

If you have anything, anything at all that you'd like to preserve from Capcom Unity, now is the time. You'll have to manually backup your forum posts, conversations and PMs. Your blog posts, however, can be downloaded. Simply click on your profile, click on the blog tab and then click on the "DOWNLOAD" button at the top right. This is a newly-added function courtesy of the Capcom Unity staff.

In terms of Devroom content, a few colleagues and I have most of the media backed up (Images, videos, etc). However, there's still work to be done in terms of backing up and cataloging Devroom blog posts written by then-MML3 staff members. If you'd like to help out on that front, shoot me an e-mail.

And with that, I bid Capcom Unity a hearty farewell! I loved that place.

First-Ever Gameplay of the 1990 Mega Man 2 Tiger Electronics LCD Wristwatch

This, ladies and gentleman, is the Mega Man 2 Tiger Electronics LCD Wristwatch. It is one of, if not the rarest incarnation of Mega Man 2. And while it is by no means a perfect representation of the NES classic, its novelty alone - the mere fact that something like this exists - makes it a treasure.

The D-Pads' Rick snagged the watch for a staggering $400 off of eBay. After a heated internal conflict, Rick decided take it out of its original, ageing packaging and record a good 40-minutes worth of gameplay. It's one of the most unique, obscure "Let's Plays" I've ever encountered.

Also, I should mention that there are early talks about disassembling the watch for preservation and emulation. So yeah; you may yet have the chance to play it!

Mega Man Voice Actor Keiji Fujiwara Passes Away at Age 55 Due to Cancer

Ninja Captor, the Toku Series That Heavily Influenced Mega Man's Design, is Now on YouTube

Several years ago, Mega Man creator Akira Kitamura revealed that he initially wanted Mega Man's appearance to change whenever players equipped a different Weapon. Although this idea wasn't fully realized until Mega Man 11, the concept has been there since the very beginning, owed in part to a little television program called Ninja Captor.

In an 2011 Rockman Maniax interview (translated by Shmuplations), Kitamura said:

"In the beginning, I imagined a character like Mega Man equipped with some kind of weapon, but when you transformed, your whole appearance would change. You know that little protrusion on the top-front of Mega Man’s helmet? When you changed weapons, it was supposed to change like the Ninja Captor character’s helmets, and show a little symbol depending on the weapon’s element (fire, water, lightning, etc)."

Unfortunately for Kitamura's team, they weren't "allowed to use symbols like that".  They were concerned about infringing on Ninja Catpor's copyright, in other words. Instead, programmer Matsushita-san came up with the idea for Mega Man's color changing mechanic; a trait that has followed the blue bomber ever since.

Today, we can look back on Ninja Captor with posterity. Thanks to Toei's newly launch "Tokusatsu World" YouTube channel, we can watch the show with English subtitles for free and legally. I've embedded the first episode above.

If you've never seen 70s tokusatsu, you're in for quite the treat!

Team Shachi's "Rockman 20XX" Game is Getting a Physical Release... Sort Of

Earlier in 2019, Capcom partnered with Japanese idol group Team Shachi for a special Rockman collaboration. The crossover spawned concerts, an album and, perhaps most noteworthy of all, an official Team Shachi x Rockman game called "Rockman 20XX". In it, the Shachi girls are turned into super robots in order to save an old, wheelchair-bound Rockman, Roll and Blues from a diabolical virus. You can check it out here.

The game proved to be so popular that, as announced by members of Team Shachi on livestream, it will be released on an actual Famicom cartridge!... but not really.

The Mega Man Movie is Probably Headed to Netflix as Chernin Entertainment Inks First-Look Deal

Chernin Entertainment, the production company behind the live-action Mega Man film, has signed a first-look deal with Netflix, reports Deadline. Although terms of the multi-year pact were not disclosed, it's largely implied Netflix will become the exclusive home of future Chernin Entertainment projects... Mega Man included.

The live-action Mega Man movie was originally slated to be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Earlier this year, however, Chernin Entertainment part ways the company after it was absorbed by Disney. Chernin were able to retain the rights to 80-plus film projects it had in development at 20th Century Fox.

Mega Man will be directed by Henry Joost, produced by Masi Oka and written by Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer of Matt Reeve's The Batman (2021). As the film is currently in pre-production, there are no details on story, cast or a release date.

CG Render of X From Cancelled "Maverick Hunter" FPS Surfaces

Capcom and Armature Studio's Maverick Hunter may be gone, but it certainly isn't forgotten. Not by one of its key artists, anyway.

Jaehoon Kim, who previously posted concept art and stills from the ill-fated first-person shooter, recently published a pair of videos (here and here) showing the ins-and-outs of X's actual model from the game (albeit untextured). Both clips are very short but we get a good look at just how "animated" X's body was intended to be. The Iron Man influence is unmistakable and for good reason: Adi Granov, the artist who designed Iron Man's armor for the MCU, created this incarnation of X.

While I, personally, was not a fan of the direction Maverick Hunter was aiming for, it's always fascinating to see more of what could have been. You can read more about Maverick Hunter here!

Original "Unarmored" Command Mission X Model Discovered After 16 Years

Sit down, close your eyes and take yourself back to 2004. Recall, if you will, that the earliest screenshots for Mega Man X: Command Mission featured X wearing his original blue armor (albeit slightly stylized). This was a time before Capcom incorporated the now fan-favorite "Stealth Armor". If memory isn't your strong suit, it originally looked like this and this. In 2010, additional screenshots of this unused, unarmored state were discovered lurking inside the E3 2004 demo build, too.

Flash forward to today, I am pleased to report that a startling discover has been made among The Cutting Room Floor community. A one Chris Shade was poking around inside the retail GameCube version of the game when, to his surprise, he found a "demo" folder. Inside, Chris found model and texture data for X's unused armor. That's right: it's been hiding under our noses this whole time. Sixteen years, in fact.

Chris took the liberty of extracting the model, which you can download here. If you have the know-how, you can restructure it to look like the above image. And if you're a real wizard, you might be able to mod it *back in* to Command Mission. You could even put it in Grad Theft Auto V, I dunno. I leave that in your hands.

So yeah; this is a pretty neat discovery. It goes to show you that we're still learning new things about some of our favorite games after all these years!

The Making of the Rockman ZX Series Part 5: ZXA Character Designs, DASH Connections

Rockman Unity took an extra week to publish the last part of Makoto Yabe's interview about "The Making of the ZX series", but it's here, translated once again by Sidier. The final entry discusses the creation of Grey and Ashe, the connection between the ZX series and the DASH series, among other topics. Check it out after the break!

April Fools: Play as Prometheus & Pandora in Newly Discovered "Chapter W"

(April fools! We tried to carry on the old "Cpapcom" tradition! This may indeed become a fan-project one day courtesy of Tomycase!)

Original story: A major new addition to Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection has been hiding under our noses this whole time. Rockman Corner reader Sidd Finch discovered a new sidequest in Mega Man ZX Advent that unlocks "Chapter W". The new campaign features a brand-new area and the ability to play as Prometheus and Pandora.

You can find all the details after the break!

Classic Mega Man, Roll, Proto Man, Zero, Leviathan Confirmed for Rockman X DiVE

The Rockman X DiVE development team have confirmed that the first five non-X series characters appearing in the game will be classic Mega Man, Roll, Proto Man, Zero series Zero and Leviathan.

While this is sort of being played up as an April Fools' Day joke, I can tell you with absolute certainty it isn't. Not only were these characters referenced in very early datamine finds, but this gives credence to my initial X DiVE report: characters from *different* series will be playable at some point.

Although the development team did not say when these characters will be made available, they did announce a limited time gift:

"Furthermore, to celebrate this exciting news,
the team will send "Special Gift Box x (4+1)" from 2020/4/1 00:00 ~ 2020/4/1 23:59 (UTC+8)
Players who have not logged in during this period will miss this prize XDD

That's all for now! Stay tuned!

Rockman Unity's April Fools Joke This Year is a 690 Million Yen Rockman Ring

It's April 1st in Japan and that means it's time for Rockman Unity's annual April Fools' Day joke! This time around, they're hocking a ceramic Rockman ring that sells for a whopping 690 million yen... or roughly $6,413,550.00 US. It's already sold out, too. A Sigma and Mac ring are in the works, too, apparently.

So yeah; this *isn't* something you can actually buy. But, again, we've seen many Rockman April Fools' day jokes become real products in the past. These rings could very well become a real thing, albeit far more affordable.

The Making of the Rockman ZX Series Part 4: Character Design

After a small delay, we are back with a complete translation for the fourth part in Makoto Yabe's "Making of ZX Series" interview conducted by Rockman Unity. This time Ucchy and Makoto Yabe discus the origins and design philosophy behind the most notable characters in the first game.

Part 5 was scheduled to be published on March 25th; however, the original blog post was edited and the date was changed to a mere "coming soon". As soon as part 5 is online, we will bring you a translation with help once again provided by our friend Sidier.  Without further ado, you can find part 4 after the break!

Mega Man Zero 1-4, ZX and ZX Advent Soundtracks Now on Spotify, Apple Music, Steam!

What's sure to be a surprise to many, Capcom US have officially released digital soundtracks for all four Mega Man Zero games, Mega Man ZX and Mega Man ZX Advent on Spotify, Apple Music and Steam. Check 'em out in the links below!

Apple Music:

Tracks made specifically for Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection are included as well, but the "Reploid Remixes" are sorely missing. Also, it's worth pointing out that each individual OST is $13.99. That's $83.94 for all six. That's totally fine, sure. However, I think it's worth pointing out that the physical edition of the recently released Zero/ZX Sound Box runs between 8,000 to 8,800 yen. That's around $72 on the low end. It's a matter of preference, but if you want the physical CDs, you can get them a bit cheaper.

Regardless, this is an admirable move on Capcom US's part. This is the first time these OSTs have been released in the US in an official capacity. And look at that; we now have ourselves a very CLEAN version of the Sound Box cover art, too! Isn't Nakayama just the best?

So sit back, relax and enjoy!

Fan-Game "Mega Man Perfect Blue" Looks to Hit All the Right Notes

Mega Man Perfect Blue is a fan-game currently in development by RRThiel and co. that not only captures the spirit of the classic series, but also aims to carve its only legacy. From its unique visual style to one banger soundtrack, Perfect Blue may just hit that mark.

According to director RRThiel, the game, which is being developed in the "Megamix Engine", will consist of eight stages: an intro stage, 4 Robot Master stages and 3 Castle stages. You can play as either Mega Man or Roll and each sibling plays differently. Mega Man plays mostly the same but he can now shoot while sliding, jump from ladders and charge all of his Special Weapons. Additionally, when Mega Man is out of Special Weapon energy, he can STILL use his Special Weapons! They'll just be a little weaker with reduced functionality.

As for Roll, she plays similar to Zero from the Mega Man Zero series but with a "streamlined" approach. She can only perform a single slash at a time but it's fast, potent and can be used while walking or dashing. Roll does not acquire Special Weapons from Robot Masters; instead, she learns different techniques like Zero.

Mega Man Perfect Blue is expected to release sometime in 2021. To keep your appetites whet until then, head to RRThiel's YouTube channel for a preview of the game's soundtrack!

Mega Man Megamix Creator Designs a Reploid to Fight COVID-19

"My daughter said to me, 'daddy, you should draw an Amabie to help defeat COVID-19'," relates Mega Man Megamix author and illustrator Hitoshi Ariga. With pen in hand, the renowned artist forged a hero to not only "fight" COVID-19, but to spread a message of hope and healing with the world.

And thus the antiviral medicine Reploid, Antivirus Armorvie, was born!

Per his daughter's wishes, Hitoshi Ariga's Antivirus Armorvie is a "tough" Amabie. Amabie are three-legged mermaid/merman yokai. According to legend, sharing drawings of Amabie will heal people in times of disease.

Ariga is not the only person drawing an Amabie in response to COVID-19. By searching the hashtag on Twitter or Instagram, you'll find a growing number of Amabie art created by people from every corner of Japan. Each and every piece carries the hope of warding off the epidemic in not just Japan, but the world.

If you would like create your very own Amabie (Mega Man-inspired or not), I implore you to use the above hashtag and share it on social media! It's a little something you can do to help comfort and inspire people during these scary and uncertain times.
