Mega Man Legends 3 Announced For Nintendo 3DS

Hell has frozen over. Pigs have flown. Mega Man Legends 3 is real and it's for the Nintendo 3DS! Via Capcom Unity:

"MEGA MAN LEGENDS 3 PROJECT KICKS OFF!!

"Mega Man Legends 3 Project has just been announced at the Nintendo Conference 2010 in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS! While we can’t get into too many details, we can say that fans will have an opportunity to be part of the development process like never before as they interact directly with the team! How exactly? You'll have to stay tuned for more news at New York Comic Con!"

FULL STORY AFTER THE BREAK!....

and now, a word from Inafune:

...and another message. This one is from MML3's director:

"Hi everyone! This is Masakazu Eguchi, director of MEGA MAN LEGENDS 3!
So, how about that Keiji Inafune special interview? Did you like that?

As you can see, Inafune is very enthusiastic about this project. And that new development style that he said he would go into more detail about later, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by that. We think not only fans of the series, but anyone interested in Mega Man Legends will be like, “What? …OMG!!!”
When I and the rest of the staff first heard that were that we were doing this, we were shaking in our boots. All of us were asking our bosses, “Are you guys serious?”
But the proposition was interesting to say the least. So, now here we are making intense preparations and trying to stay on schedule.

…Having said that, there are so many details about the project that I am dying to tell all of you… but you’ll have to wait and let your imaginations run wild for just a little longer, until the Comic Con in New York next month!

Until then, I’ll use this blog to introduce to members of my team, and tell you a little about what’s going on here in the Dev Lab. I’ll do my best to update it at least once a week, so check back often!
I’m also looking forward to hearing comments from all of you!"

I'm in utter shock at the moment. I saw this coming, but didn't want to get my hopes too high. Nay, here we are and it has happened at long last. No words can describe the excitement I'm feeling (yes, huge Legends fan here), so I believe this bit of fan art sums it all up:

Congrats, all. The fans made this happen.

  1. So it's real. This is the year of miracles indeed.

    Congratulations, Legends fans.

Shoot me if someone's going to start whining about console wars crap.

  2. I literally just died out of happiness and excitement.

I never thought I would actually see the day. Thank you Capcom! Thank you Inafune!

Of course, I still have yet to play Legends 2 and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, but I am nonetheless going to get this when it comes out.

Anyways, this should be interesting. I wonder how far it's been in development or if it'll be a launch title...

  12. I was surprised when I saw MML 3 for 3DS! I'm kinda disappoint because I thought it's for PS3... but! I'm glad MML 3 made it this day! Congrats!

  13. ^^ I truly welcome this game as a new edition to my Megaman experience and has my full support.

Although I never played a Legends game before, I know I will like this as it is adventurous and fun.

Lol at least my list of future 3DS games just rose up by one more game.

    ^^ Ganbatte ne Inafune-san.

I BELIEVED IN THE SHADOW EVER SINCE THE BEGINNING.

It was pretty obvious, but then again, we've been had most of the times with fake announcements and rumors.

Let me put my feelings towards this in the sacred words of...emm... I don't know, the public?:

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUCK YEAH!

Mega Man Legends 3!? For the Nintendo 3DS!?

    GREAT-GALLOPIN' GULPITS!

I KNEW that's what the "oft requested" game was going to be! I knew it all along, even before The Shadow confirmed it!

  20. So. Duke Nukem Forever, MvC3 AND Legends 3 are now real.

Armaggedon has been given the green light.

GOOD THING I HAVE MY SHINING LASER :U

DONT EVEN DARE ON SELLING ALL MY WEAPONS THIS TIME OR I'LL KILL YOU!!

  25. Holy Crap! Holy Crap!

So, they're really gonna make Legends 3?!?!

    *Dies of happiness*

I can't believe the fans made that possible.

I can't wait for the 3DS and Legends 3 to come out. :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. If possible, would someone possibly find out if they'd be willing to get the old voice actors back together for this? Legends really stood out for it's time due to voice consistency between games, save for Trigger in MML2 for some odd reason, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to hear more Tiesel Bonne lines delievered by the great one himself.

Legends Roll / X7 Alia returning would also be swell, too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I believed. I always believed. Never stopped believing.

And now it's real. Good things really do sometimes come to gamers who wait. :)

Incredible. The one thing any Mega Man fan worth their weight in Energy Tanks has been begging for for the past decade, and now... it's really coming. Amazing... just amazing.

And you know what? I'm not even nervous about it, because Inafune specifically mentioned that we should be thinking about what happened at the end of Legends 2 and that they're going to fill in all the gaps for us. That suggests a serious focus on story and giving us the canonical sequel we've all been waiting for since that cliffhanger ten years ago.

The one thing I wanted from Legends 3 more than anything else was for it to be a true sequel in every sense of the word. Not a remake. Not a reboot. Not an unrelated sidestory. A true sequel that continues straight off from Legends 2 and answers the plot's remaining mysteries, and so far it seems that's exactly what Inafune wants to give us. :)

Oh my god... it's about time. So incredible.

On the downside, given this announcement, the Day of Lavos is now a scientific inevitability. Have a nice life, everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ABOUT TIME CAPCOM, WE'VE BEEN WAITING 10 YEARS!!!!!

I still have my PS1, so I gotta go buy used copies of Legends 1 and 2 and share them on the same memory card.....

    ReplyDelete
  29. And yet another console that I will have to buy.
Ah well, now a have a reason for it ar least.
Nice news, still have to pla ML2 though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "My 3DS exclusive fear comes true. I'm happy regardless though... since we have youtube these days. ^___^"

Why not just buy a 3DS? AFAIK it'll be the only stereoscopic digital camera on the market, and it's going to be a fairly powerful handheld game console with three times the internal storage space as the Wii. Oh and a ton of third party devs are flooding the thing with support. Legends 3 is just the icing on the cake!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Why! Why on 3DS, I can't buy it for just one game :(
    But this news is....AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am so glad that it is for 3DS. I am sick and tired of people hoping it for PS3 and 360. Giving a nintendo a chance because Rockman/Megaman was first created for Nintendo and it should remain faithful to Nintendo forever! CONGRATULATION, CAPCOM, you finally make it right! :D

    ReplyDelete
  33. I officially dub this year..

    "The Legendary Year"

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, Hell yes! And thank God they're keeping the same artstyle, too XD

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dammit, I was trying to hold of on buying a 3DS just because I know there's going to be a better "Lite" version of it, but with this coming out I won't be able to hold off depending on the release date of the 3DS and the release date of this game.

Damn you Capcom. Either way I'm happy, I hope it's a big game though that's why I was also hoping for a PS360 release. I also wanted a pretty looking game on top of it all so I hope the 3DS can deliver in terms of all this.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm really happy about this, I've waited for years for a new legends game. Today is a solid victory for Mega Man fan around the world.

The complete downside is the fact is that it's on 3DS. I would say the main issue I have with that is I have to go out and pay $300 for a new handheld system (price announced yesterday). I was really hoping to see this on PS3 and 360, but I guess we will take what we can get.

Regardless, today is a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  37. My life is now complete! This is awesome! I've been demanding a sequel ever since i beat the 2nd, now it's time to continue/end this epic story!

Funny, so far, that's two big announcements in wanted games. MML3 and DNF.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @MusashiAA

Just watch, she's either going to have to use them to build the ship to come get you, or sell them to complete the ship.

It's too early in the morning for me to scream for joy, but I'm sure once I've woken up the gravity of all this will finally sink in.

My only regret is that it's for the 3DS. I was really hopeing to play it on 'The Big Screen', but I'll take it regardless. Now please Infune. Please let me fire my mega buster while using the rolling shoes!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Cool! ...I just wasn't expecting it for a handheld console though... :/

    ReplyDelete
  40. Can you believe I went to bed like a minute before this was announced?

    C'est la vie.

    ReplyDelete
  41. OMG Happy Days!!

    I must preorder a japanese 3ds now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You all can do die along with this piece of crap!Have fun kicking cans and dogs randomly around a town with blockheads.

Capcom,i feel ashamed for what you have done.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ummm will this game work on the normal 2nd gen ds? I really dont want 2 buy another counsle for 1 game.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well there is the new Megaman X game (Megaman Online) and your new Legends game. I guess this is the whole reason that they didn't make any new network time line games. Oh well, maybe to balance it out they will make a REALLY good SF and/or BN and/or NEW Network Style games. Oh and BTW, I really hope that they put this game on the app store. I mean the retina display and touch screen not to mention A LOT of people are going to buy this game if it was also on the new Ipod Touch/Iphone 4g. The graphics would be unreal.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Satan called. Apparently his lackeys aren't getting any work done because they're having nonstop snowball fights.

Nnow I have to go play the first two games so I know what the heck is going on in the third one.

In all seriousness, though, the lack of "This suxx for not being on 360 or PS3" makes me happy! We can all just celebrate the fact that we're getting this game at all! *though I probably won't get it, since the Legends series isn't my cup of tea. But still, happy days!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I really hope they won't screw this - normally I would be more than exhilarated after reading this, but seeing what kind of crap Rockman Universe and the new Devil May Cry appear to be, I just no longer know what to think of it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. To all the idiot whiners bitching, "wahh it isn't for 360/PS3, wahh!"... get a fucking GRIP, seriously.

Mega Man Legends is a series with a devoted fan base, but it never sold widely outside of that fanbase. Legends 1 and 2 sold decently, but not particularly well. Given that fact -- as well as the fact that game development costs have risen dramatically in the last TEN FUCKING YEARS -- what kind of idiot do you have to be to claim you're "surprised" or "disappointed" that Legends 3 isn't a console game?

Would you seriously expect Capcom, who KNOWS Legends 1 and 2 didn't sell that well ten years ago, to spend an entire console game's development budget (which, these days, is at least a few million bucks for ANY console game, let alone the next Final Fantasy or God of War) on Legends 3, a game they're graciously green-lighting for the fans but that they know won't sell through the roof? Of COURSE they won't. No self-respecting company who has to worry about their bottom line would make such a stupid business decision.

So, whiners? Get your heads out of your collective asses, stop breathing only from the mouth, and be thankful that, even in this day and age of skyrocketing development costs, Capcom's green-lighting a game that really is only for the fans, and probably won't sell particularly well beyond that devoted fanbase -- hell, let's say beyond those in the devoted fanbase who can afford a 3DS when Legends 3 comes out.

And seriously, what the hell is your problem with the 3DS anyway? It's considerably more powerful than a PSP, looks to offer graphics beyond those of a PS2, and offers glasses-free 3D. I played the thing at E3, and it's nothing short of amazing. The fact that it's a 3DS game is actually more than I was hoping for; I was expecting a DS, PSP, WiiWare, or XBLA/PSN title. This is far better than ALL of those possibilities.

Jesus. So many people are fucking IDIOTS, I swear to god.

    ReplyDelete
  57. WhooooOOOO00o0o0o0o0O0Ot!
I did a happy dance in my chair. :D
Buuut.. Did it HAVE to be for the 3DS? D: The one console thing NOT in this household?
I have access to Gameboy, SNES, N64, Gameboy Advance, SP, DS, Wii, 360, PS3, PSP, and it had to be the 3DS? xD I hope the 3DS is good 3D, for the sake of this game. Never had a DS I've played for longer then a month, and never really seen any thing with good 3D-ness, so I hope DASH 3 obliterates my previous experiences with both the aforementioned subjects.
Bleh, whether it does or not, is myne an' I is gunna be nabbin' meh a 3DS.

    ReplyDelete
  58. @Techokami

I have not embraced the idea of portable gaming... Not now at least, when I'm still a student paying my own tuition. Having multiple games spread across multiple gaming system... I'm not liking that idea.

Maybe in the future. =) For now, it will be youtube for me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. To the few people that are already whining about the price of the 3DS:

Seriously, we only know the Japanese price. Where are all of the $300 estimations coming from?

Oh, that right, idiots are out converting Japanese currency into US dollars in an attempt to figure out what the price might be when the 3DS gets released in the US/Europe.

News flash: It doesn't work that way. It has NEVER worked that way.

And even if it is expensive, there are some people here that want handhelds to become more like consoles, right? Well, you're partly getting your wish.

Also, Ash Paulsen took the words right out of my mouth. TEN FREAKING YEARS and some of you still have the gall to complain about platform choice? Either some of you haven't been waiting the full ten years, or some of you are impossibly concieted assholes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I blame the slow underwater Nino Ruins for the low sales, but MML2 was a great game even with that negative issue. (which was fixed on PSP, but it wasn't released on English...)

    PARTY TIME!!!

  62. Capcom finally heared our cries!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. YAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, for N3DS only!? What about Wii, PS3 and Xbox360?

FFFFFFF... Didn't Capcom learned with MMPU and MHX?

Oh well... At least it isn't a Japan exclusive mobile phone game.

And it was announced today, so there may be ports for consoles. (MML1 was ported for N64 and PSP later)

    ReplyDelete
  64. @3DS whiners:

    Go fuck yourselves.

IT'S LEGENDS 3. I've been waiting for this to happen for TEN STINKING YEARS!

GO CRASH SOME OTHER PARTY! Or get in line if you're ticked off about not getting your sequel to be made, because I believe there's only 5 outcomes after this game:

-Mega Man 11 (come on now, you KNOW it's going to happen anyways)

-A spinoff game from ANY series

-Maverick Hunter X 2 (yet another game that didn't sell well, is requested by quite a few people and that Inafune liked. See a patern here?)

-A new Starforce/EXE game (because the GridBattle formula can still be improved...a whole freaking lot)

    -A whole new series

And I'm not counting the possibiliy of yet ANOTHER Legends game if Legends 3 ends up being successfull.

Dear God, so many people are just plain fucking IDIOTS.

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Anon -

DIFFERENCE: MM: PU and MHX were for PSP, a system that got slaughtered by the DS and generally never did very well.

Legends 3 is for 3DS, a system that by all accounts will sell like fucking hotcakes. Every iteration of the DS prints money, and the 3DS will be no different. Legends 3 will find a much wider audience on the 3DS than MM: PU and MHX did on the PSP.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wow...

    Just wow..

    I can't say anything else, the English language lacks what I need to express the nerd-joy. I, and countless others, have waited a decade for this moment. ;~;

I can't say anymore, so I'll just say this. I believe it's very good to be on the 3DS, and I WILL buy the 3DS just for this game! I think Capcom wouldn't let Inafune-san make MML3(*squeal*) for a home console, so bringing it to a powerful handheld is the best move he could do!

    ReplyDelete
  67. When people become shocked in a state of awe in excitement, they can't quite explain their feelings very well. So I am pretty sure everyone knows how I feel right now, so I wont go on and on about how I feel...very awesome right now, lol.

However I am rather worried about the new style of development Keiji spoke of. I have faith that he wont stray too much from the Legends feel and formula, but you never know.

Either way I am excited as can be. What an AWESOME day for Mega Man news. This is history, friends. Legends 3 has finally come. It may be on the 3DS, of course I was rooting for a full fledged next gen Mega Man game, but this gives me even MORE of a reason to get the 3DS. Lol, MML3DS.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Wow. Sorry for the double-post but.. I just noticed how there are like, no negative things here!

Save for some console complaining, nothing! :3 I know it will only last for a little, but at least we Mega-fans can breathe in some fresh air at the fact there is no people whining!

Oh well.. Once they start showing development, all hell will break loose... X3

    ReplyDelete
  69. Agreed with Ash Paulsen all the gaddamn way. You 3DS whiners can all go to hell.

If you're more worried about the console the game it's on, then you can't call yourselves fans at this point. You should care more about this game even existing than to complain on the console it's landing on. Suck it the hell up, get over yourselves, and enjoy the ride.

I was gonna get a 3DS anyways for those Star Fox 64 and Zelda: OoT 3D remakes with it's new 3D experience, but now that I know that Mega Man Legends 3 is coming to 3DS, that just makes things all the more convienent for me. Now I won't have to buy one more console besides 3DS, just for this game.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I still wanted Star force 4 but all you Legends fans deserve Legends 3. Have fun!

  72. I'm shell-shocked, to say the least. Let's all work together to give our series the long-overdue credit it didn't get the first time around!

    LEGENDS NEVER DIE! >:D

    ReplyDelete
  73. When I saw the announcement on Attack of the Show on G4 I was really surprised then later I thought how people at the Protodude Rockman, Capcom-Unity, and Mega Man fans in general would think. So I rushed here after dinner of course.

Anyway the 3DS doesnt come out til Spring of 2011 so might not see this game til late 2011 in the winter or early 2012 in the winter. Anyway I was already planning on getting the 3DS anyway since I plan on getting an part time job and save up for and many other games, I will buy this game if I get a 3DS and since the 3DS has an new feature which allwos you to buy old GBC and GBA games and play them on the 3DS I might buy all the Mega Man games for the GBA. However I will not automatically become an Mega Man fan again(I just never played any Lrgends game so I might wanna test this game out)...however if a Starforce 4 is revealed or an new Network series..then maybe...

    ReplyDelete
  74. I still can't gey myself to believe this... My favorite game of all time, getting a sequel. I had lost hope already.

About the 3DS... Well, I actually wished it to be this way. Even without the HD graphics, Legends just seemed like the perfect fit for the 3D.

Also, I think there's going to be a Legends Collection for the 3DS. It's going to be released a bit earlier than MML3.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Legends 3? (*YAWN*)...

I don't even remember much of Legends 2, I haven't played my copy in years.

The first one was a fine novelty, but I've seen more than enough of the "Legends" crew through cameos more suited for real Megaman characters. NxC... MvC2... TvC...

Granted Capcom has made vast improvements in their 3D action titles since the last Legends game, but I suppose it's a good thing that they're making a conscious effort to please all the fans during this rare period of creative freedom.

I guess when you're the last major independent game developer in Japan, you know enough to let your creative minds do their thing and watch the bucks roll in. Besides, Legends 3 is hardly enough for me to sell my soul for a PS3. If Metal Gear Solid can sell PSPs then why can't something that loosely resembles Megaman sell 3Ds's?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I predicted SMG2.

I predicted a Metroid game that mixed 3rd person and 1st person.

I predicted a zelda game that mixed TP with WW.

    I predicted MML3 on 3DS.

Not tooting my own horn (None of these were that hard :P). Just hoping to press my luck a bit and "predict" another EXE game after the current projects are off the table.

Very excited about this one, in the meantime!

  83. @Professor Megaman: Finally someone who shares my sentiments! I will never understand the appeal of the Legends games. To me, their sales are proof of their mediocrity. So bland.

Go rain on someone else's parade. Clearly you're not a serious Mega Man fan.

The fact that there's anyone would say anything negative after an announcement the serious fans have waited TEN YEARS for absolutely disgusts me. Some people will never be happy.

I hate the Mega Man fan community so much of the time. x_x

  85. o_o So little time and so many flamers already? Just because we get a sequel doesn't mean we lap up anything they give us, you know. (shields up)

All the same, hopefully the feel of the older game doesn't get too much of a renovation. Definitely looking forward to the game in action! It's been a long wait, no doubt, and I'm really happy with CAPCOM's move.

By the way, is it me or does the decade have a special meaning for CAPCOM? X)

  87. *claps!* ^___________^ This makes me happy! I'm not much of a Legends fan but I did enjoy the games.. Plus, if the fans got Legends 3 to happen, one has to imagine X9 is possible. :)

    So, congrats, all! We won!

  88. Wait, if a new DASH is coming, than we will also gain a Rockman DASH Official Complete Works? And as ZX is the only one left, a ZX3 for 3DS in 2012?

Late to the party, but congratulations to those who wanted it!

I personally couldn't get into Legends/DASH that much, though. I like the characters/asthetics a ton, but I couldn't get into the gameplay. Maybe it was because I only had Legends 64...

Cool story bros. Now let us who are actually happy enjoy this news. No need to rain on our parade.

  91. With Famous in charge, nothing can go wrong. At least not like SSR, anyways.
