Warner Bros. Planned a Mega Man Movie?

An interesting tidbit of news comes from the archives of Dark Horizons, concerning the possibility of a Mega Man feature film produced by Warner Bros. and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The article dates way back to September of 2003:

"Got a kick out of the recent "news" that Shyamalan's been linked to Superman, no doubt because his name's been heard around Warner's quite a bit lately. So I figured I'd set the record straight. WB's been trying to get their mitts on the rights to the long running video game series Mega Man to turn into a feature film. Capcom, the creators, are wary of letting anyone touch the project, after a few disastrous licensing moves with the property as well as the recent "so so" reaction to other movie adaptations. The most recent move made was that the suits asked Capcom for a "wish list" of directors, and Shyamalan was the one name they came back with.

I dunno what made them think that the nuanced style of M. Night would be perfect for adapting a colorful video game character, but there you have it. I seriously doubt MNS would lower himself to doing a video game adaptation, but who knows? I suspect the big guys upstairs are at least making an attempt, in the efforts to get the movie made... for some reason, they think it will be a big deal and potential franchise".

Shayamlan directing a Mega Man film? WHAT A TWIST! In all seriousness, I can't even begin to fathom a theatrical adaption of MM. Animated yes, but live action? No sir. No matter, it's too late now...

  1. I wish Astro Boy didn't exist. I don't care if Rockman was supposedly inspired partially by him. It just seemed to ruin Rockman by being a pooey design about a boy robot as well. And with the Astro Boy movie, there's no chance for a good 3D Rockman movie (though it was slim anyway-- the "good" part) and people will associate Rockman with Astro Boy too much...

Oh well. At least no live-action movie came of it. That would have been a disaster. >_> (Like the fan movie)

  2. As interesting as it could turn out, it's very likely it'd fall into the tired "explosions, contrived sex, no plot" hole that pretty much every other movie has recently. MNS could handle it well, but after "Lady in the Water", I'm not sure.

  3. Not to mention Mega man would be white kid and the Asian community would be all angry.

  4. Bah, the Asians love us. For some... reason. O_o

If Astro Boy didn't exist, the world would be different....alot of amazing things wouldn't exist, not just Megaman.

Thats a horrible thing to wish.

  6. Astro Boys' influence goes beyond that of Rockman's very existence: Astro Boy literally invented anime, setting the standard in design and animation techniques.

  9. Nobody cares that hate,okay?

  10. I love it when people say "nobody cares." As if anyone cares what you or anyone else thinks either.

Although I am inclined to agree that your hate for Astro Boy is unrelated.

  11. UGH. NO.

I am SO glad M. Night didn't get the rights to this. And live action? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? Honestly at least Astro Boy looks good since it's going to be animated. A MegaMan movie wouldn't be impossible(I've had some ideas in my head over the years)but it could NEVER be live action without being laughable. A MegaMan movie has to be an animated feature. No questions asked. KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM OUR BELOVED BLUE BOMBER M. NIGHT, THE HAPPENING WAS HORIBLE.

  12. Animated movies for Megaman?

    *thumbs up*

    Live Action for Megaman?

    *Thumbs down*

And what's WB planned for Megaman movie? I fear if they're going for Live Action. That would be a huge catastrophe because everyone thinks Megaman is a joke in Live Action. Just like Dragonball Z: Evolution.

  13. If Rockman became live action, let the Japanese make it. Anyone else would be horrible. Cause we all know an American adaption of any story is bad. (I'm not even going to pay to watch that DBZ movie) But personally, I say leave it alone.

  14. Please... A live action megaman movie ill never work if its made by Hollywood, because they dont know how to make faithfull adaptations of source material without including sex, guns and excessive cursing.

that plus child labor laws would prevent Megaman from being portrayed as he should... a BOY robot. he may be called "man" but hes still designed to look like a little kid. in a live action movie, 9especially by hollywood,) he would most likely end up as some well known actor. God forbid he be portrayed by the likes of tom cruise or some other guy...

besides, the clostest we will EVER get to a GOOD live action Megaman might be Eddie Lebron's megaman movie. and you know why? because hes actually PLAYED THE GAMES. and actually understands it doesnt need anything "extra"

Ahem... From the makers of Signs...

"Oh no! Aliens that die upon touching water are coming to gas us!"

And the makers of The Village...

"Wait, you've been telling me that there are no monsters? You've just been wearing stupid costumes?"

    And the makers of Unbreakable...

"Um... I can't die... But, I can drown..."

And the makers of The Happening...

    "RUN!!! THE PLANTS ARE EVIL!!!"

And the makers of those other movies I can't remember the titles of... Comes a NEW movie, that's bound to have a really awesome twist...

"Dr. Wily? YOU'RE MEGAMAN'S SON FROM THE FUTURE!?!?"

  18. A live action Mega Man movie would be awesome

  19. I THINK IT WOULD BE HARD TO MAKE INTO A LIVE ACTION FILM.....BUT THEY PULLED OFF IRONMAN FAIRLY WELL! MANGA STYLE IS NOT EASY TO CAPTURE LIVE THOUGH....MAYBE CAPCOM SHOULD THINK ABOUT PUTTING OUT A KICKASS ANIME MOVIE??????

  20. I think a live action Mega Man could work, but only if it's done perfectly. Movies like Transformers and G.I. Joe give an idea of would it could look like! Personally, I'd skip straight to the X series and build a movie concept from that.

  21. I agree with that last comment. Everytime I've imagined a Megaman live action movie, it's been about the Megaman X series. He looks older then, and the story can be quite a bit darker than good old Megaman sometimes. It's a concept with potential (especially in consideration of sweet Z-saber live action...action!)

    Indeed.

  23. It wouldn't be that hard; because look at capcom's resident evil, they turned that into a movie, the 80's transformers cartoon was turned into live action by michael bay, and G.I joe: rise of cobra was made into a live action movie; I just believe they should start with the X series and skip the original cause there's more plot to the x series, like for example the repliforce, the maverick hunters, the reploids, and the mavericks; WB shouldn't be affiliated with it, universal studios should and they need a good producer/director e.x - Michael bay, mcg(terminator: salvation), or Lorenzo di bonaventura(g.I Joe the rise of cobra).
