Nintendo Wii Storage Solution Announced/Released

If you're like me, you can barely fit Mega Man 1-3 and Mega Man 9 on your Wii; with all the other Channels and save data clogging up the system's memory, there's very little room to download anything from the Virtual Console and WiiWare in the future. Well friends, today Nintendo finally addressed the issue at their GDC keynote:

As of today, a new firmware update is available allowing Wii users to add a special SD Card Menu onto the system menu. This new functionality enables you to download and play games from the VC/WiiWare directly off of the SD Card. The SD Card menu supports up to twenty screens of twelve channel a piece, meaning depending on the size of your SD Card, you can carry a little over 200 or so games. In addition, the new functionality allows the Wii to read 32GB SD Cards!

All I can say is, thank you Nintendo. I REALLY needed this. The firmware update is available right now!

  1. I must say that I am very, VERY glad to hear this, especially since my Wii's memory is just about used up. I've had to transfer unnecessary save-files and already-cleared Virtual Console games over to SD Cards, but this will be much more convenient. Any word on exactly when this update will come to us?

  4. lol, I haven't updated in foreve (running homebrew) and I just updated today to be able to run Animal Crossing and was extremely surprised to see that little SD card icon. NOTE: installing this update at least stops the WAD manager from being able to install tickets. I didn't test anything else, I was able to run the WAD manager via the already installed homebrew channel.

  5. I don't understand how people were running out of room. Was that much money actually spent on buying little old games? I've seen some people's menus completely filled. This update does not affect me. I only have 1 VC game.

  6. @mega rock.exe

Actually N64 and some Wiiware are very big.

Whats funny is that every DL Mega Man game on Wii or it is very small when speaking on blocks.
...so how much this news is related to Mega Man XD

  7. I'd get this update but I'm running homebrew and don't want to brick my Wii. They should have just allowed us to use 2GB+ cards to begin with. I mean, 2GB is old now, it's 4GB + nowadays.
