October Coro Coro Report - Battles Revealed, SS Rockman Playable

Another month, another Coro Coro. The latest issue shows off Operate Shooting Star's battle system, which, as expected, enables you to play as both Rockman.EXE and Shooting Star Rockman.

Summary:
  • Both Rockmen have their own set of unique abilities.
  • SSRockman is capable of locking onto enemies from afar and blocking minor attacks.
  • SSRockman can utilize battle chips and even Program Advances.
  • WarRock Attack is a battle chip this time around, however, it is unknown if it's exclusive to SS Rockman's arsenal.

  1. So... no starforce battle system?
Wow. This game just keeps getting less and less appealing to me. Way to take one step forward and two steps back, Capcom.

  2. SS RockMan is catching on. Expected stuff, but on the other hand, it's exciting seeing confirmation. It's so cool to see SS RockMan in EXE's style. From what I've seen, SS RockMan can still use a Shield (probably <+B), and I had actually seen he used Warrock Attack as normal, not as a Battle Chip, unless you meant Beast Swing, which I've read WAS a Battle Chip (I've heard something about a Navi Chip too in reference to Beast Swing, but there was no distinction between Navi Chips and normal Battle Chips in EXE1). Nothing else in particular that I remember hearing... I wonder what it'll be like to battle SS RockMan, unless the shot shown was a versus battle. I imagine something like Acid Ace...

  3. Dude, they both look kickass in 2D battle. I'm once again stoked for this game.

  4. Also worth mentioning that one of the scans seems to imply that the bottom screen will work similar to EXE5TL-- in the Real World, it'll show RockMan EXE on the bottom screen, and in the Cyber World, it'll show the mini map. I can't tell if RockMan EXE is 3D there, though... if it is, it's a very good model, but it'll be sorta disappointing if it's 2D after EXE5TL already did something similar in 3D...

  5. looks like OSS went with exe battle system style. I think this is going to be a good game, since you could play both rockmans.

  6. Well, here's a game I'm no longer psyched for. Stupid whiners probably made Capcom remove the 3D system. Tch..

  7. So am I hearing right, or are people who kept saying "WAAHHHH WE DON'T WANT AN SSR BATTLE SYSTEM"

now whining because there isn't a SSR battle system?

    STOP. THE. WHINING.

    It says EXE

Guess what? It'll be an EXE game, it's like you expect them to be able to make a SSR system work out while keeping EXE. So seriously STOP WHINING people. It's like this with every Mega Man game and I'm sick of you so-called "fans" bitching about how horrible a game is a gonna be just from a few early screenshots. Either get used to this stuff, or get out of the fandom.

  8. Take a chill pill dude.

  9. I'm one of the few who actually LIKED SSR3's battle system...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, everyone needs to buy the game regardless. Then maybe they'll release a sequel where the EXE characters travel to the SSR timeline, and then we can have the SSR battle system again.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Alot of people liked SS3's battle sysetem, me included, but honestly I'm looking forward to going back to the good old EXE system. It's just better imo. Oh, and I agree with the second Anonymous guy above me. Stop the damn whining. I've had enough as well.

  12. Eh, I never whined about there battle style, I wanted both, but namely for multiplayer. I mean how awesome would it be to fight someone using a fairly different battle system?! Like SS Rocman has the advantage of being able to lock on and use a shield, but exe has more space to move around in so it's easier to dodge lock-ons. But I'm still pretty happy with this, I know everyone wants 3-D, but I prefer sprites because they are easier to work with.

  13. What's with the whining about the Starforce battle system? That's exactly the reason Starforce blew to begin with.

Yes, bummer it's not in 3D, but then again, 3D on the DS looks awful 9 times out of 10.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The screen shots show ss megaman with a 3x3 area. If he has lockon and shield, won't he have an unfair advantage over megaman exe?

    ReplyDelete
  15. EXCELLENT. Thank whatever lord there is that made Capcom use the Battle Network battle system. This game has my purchase. That is...if more great news is revealed about it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Emm...let me explain:

Star Force MegaMan: Lock On ability and shield (right?), probably higher HP than MegaMan.EXE, so NO NEED FOR 3X3 MOVEMENT. Thus, he only moves sideways (which btw, soundwaves are drawned sideways XD). Plus, it's obvious there'll be chips that only he can use. Same with EXE.

MegaMan.EXE: No Lock On ability and no shield. He's more compatible with the current timeline's netbattle system. Thus, he can move freely in all directions.

Now, that's just me trying to make a point. But I could be right.

  17. The sprite looks nice. I hate how they're using the old HP bar, too. Hopefully the sprite files are the same as BN, too. Then that means the sprite can be ported to hacks on the GBA games.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh, and notice the SSMega sprite. It's actually accurate this time around. His left hand is always correct unlike the blatant mistakes made with past BN characters.

  19. wow this looks really cool O_O

  20. Anon6: We don't know what Rockman.EXE gets yet. There has been no word on how the armor or style system will work in this game (assuming if EXE 1 did have something like that), and somehow I see the Navi Customizer returning to balance things a bit.

Also, we haven't seen the battlechip selection screen for Subaru yet. You guys might think this isn't important, but they could change things in Subaru's screen to balance things out a bit. Like, for example, less battlechips to choose from.

(Also, we saw the screen for Rockman.EXE a week ago, and we still don't know what that odd-looking sixth battlechip selection slot above the OK button does.)

But this is just pure speculation on my part.

    ---

Musashi: I'm not sure what you mean. Are you trying to explain how both the EXE and the SSR systems can be used in this game with some balance, or how you think Subaru's going to fight in this game?

If it's the latter, the first screenshot shows Subaru in the middle row, while the second one shows Subaru in the front row. Unless the first picture was just for show, it's looking like Subaru can move in all four directions in this game.

  21. While Star Force 1 left a lot to be desired, Star Force 2 pleased me with how much better it was, and Star Force 3 turned me into a true-blue Star Force fan. With SF 3, I think the series earned its rightful place next to (not above) the Battle Network series.

I legitimately enjoyed Sta Force 3's battle system and will miss it here, but I'm also glad they chose to go 2D with Battle Network's battle system -- I've missed it, too.

What I'm trying to say is, I think both series have their merits and I appreciate them both for what they are. I'll probably always like Battle Network a little more because its quality is more consistent (and it lasted longer, so I spent more time with it), but Star Force has earned its rightful place as Battle Network's follow-up in my eyes, and I love both worlds and their sets of characters.

In the end, I want to say I agree with the Anonymous poster who said that people need to basically stop bitching so much or get out of the fandom. It seems there's no pleasing a lot of you people, and it makes me sick. No matter what Capcom gives us, some of you always find a way to bitch about it, and those of you who do bitch just come off as spoiled brats.

If this had been 3D with Star Force's battle system, those of you who have to bitch would have bitched... just like you're bitching now about it remaining 2D. God damn. Just be glad we're getting another BN/SF game at all -- after all, the Star Force series is supposedly concluded, so with both series finished, there was never any guarantee that we were going to get another one. And personally, when I finished Star Force 3, I wasn't anywhere close to ready to say goodbye.

Be thankful for what you have. Us Mega Man fans can't afford to be picky and bratty, and thankfully, the vast majority of games Capcom sends our way are still great ones. Yeah, it could be better, but it could also be so much worse.

Now, with all that out of the way... BRING ON OPERATE SHOOTING STAR. :)

On one final note, I really hope this is called "Mega Man Battle Network: Operation Star Force" when it comes stateside. That would be pure sex.

  22. What about the whole scan? I want to see the art and the thing under the Cannon.

  23. I've been looking for the full two page spread; no such luck yet.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Two different battle styles at the same time would NOT be awesome. :P To even think that is absurd. The headaches involved are monstrous, not to mention uneven playing grounds.

    ReplyDelete
  25. We can't be bitchy, but taking every game Capcom throws at us as "meh, at least it's Mega Man" is just wrong.

Imagine Legends 3 comes out and is utter crap (can be)..."meh, at least it's Legends 3"?!. I say either get real or get out of the fandom.

  26. The ability to lock-on seems invaluable with the old EXE battle system. Rockman.exe must have some unique and useful trait to prevent him from being overshadowed by SS Rockman. For a DS game, I'm disappointed by the utter lack of visual improvement. (BN1-3 Sprites and graphic engine looks more mature, but seems out of place for a DS platform)

  27. Sweet another BN, with a twist, but a BN is a BN

  28. I'm having the same troubles comprehending how they can make RockMan EXE better than SS RockMan, whose abilities are massively useful, and combined with something he didn't have before-- full-range movement... I've seen conflicting reports about the PA thing, but even if only RockMan EXE can use PAs, EXE1 PAs really sorta... blow. I think it's likely that only RockMan EXE will be able to use the Add function, though, which is useful, especially since it seems to be 2-3's, not EXE1's terrible Add. I'm sure they intentionally hid SS RockMan's battle screen. I wonder what will activate Tuning... it can't be down anymore if SS RockMan can move throughout the whole area (and even if he couldn't to have the same range of movement, it still couldn't be down. Having something like Beast Outs might work... I always figured the Beast Out's instinct Lock On was SS RockMan's Tuning/Lock On/Warrock Attack function anyway.

  29. In terms of battle system, SSR3's the only SSR game worth noting. And that's a redo on the custom screen part. Overall, the system's really limited and feels like a rail shooter in many aspects. When comparing the systems of SSR, you have to note that the majority of its more advanced systems were available to Rock.EXE in EXE6, and with more freedom as well when considering that Rock.EXE was on the GBA.

Rock had the capability to shield in EXE2-6 using styles and navi-cust parts, and most of the time you didn't need to shield. Which meant you quite honestly had to dodge or get killed, like classic Rockman. Lock-On and Auto-Lock-On? Done by beasts. Mega/Giga? Once again, Rock. Mod Gear? Okay, this I'll hand to SSR3 and SSR3 only. Ability Waves? Just a modification of the EXE5/6 mod gear at heart. Regular system is EXE's, the "plug in" aspect is EXE's, Gemini Noise's Tag system is EXE6's made WAY simple, folders that actually require more than just shoving things in according to battle style, etc. Noise is a mash-up of Styles and Crosses with additional elements.

All in all, SSR3's the only game that really did a good job with things, and it wasn't until SSR embraced the reality that it was an altered EXE-clone that it got things out decently. The first game denied it too much, the second game tried to focus too much on the brother band. The third game made it possible for single-player, BUT still gave you nice rewards for BB. Unfortunately, the 3rd game's quality came too late, since a good number of EXE fans and newcomers tossed the series away, and SSR's sales weren't enough for Capcom to milk it. Ultimately, going back to EXE was inevitable with the amount of denial SSR originally had, and it's a pity, since SSR3 truly started making most of us want more. If anything, we should be happy that the SSR developers have decided to go back to EXE roots for SSR. Ignoring EXE and putting most of its work down the drain with SSR1 and 2 were what killed the series as a game in the first place, acknowledging the roots of SSR's universe and genre, then working UPON those roots instead of trying to ignore them were what brought 3 back up to quality.

That is to say, SSR3's worthy of being called EXE's successor, 1 and 2...eh...not so much. 2 MAYBE, but it was more unbalanced than Beast Outs.

As for those who whine about 2d, shut up. EXE's always looked good in 2d, ZX looks good in 2d, the X series looked good in 2d, most of the more famous classics looked better in 2d. BOKTAI, looked fabulous in 3d. FF6 looked fabulous in 2d. 3d doesn't automatically mean better, especially with the DS's capabiities. Though, I have to admit that 3d EXE would be somewhat breathtaking, if it were in decent quality, anyways.

Also, if Subaru's constantly correct, the sprites in this game, or at least the new ones, might actually be high-quality 2d models made with 3d hardware. Which would mean...surprise surprise, 3d. If not...you still know they put in a lot more effort into keeping Subaru's arms accurate. It's turning out to be better than we'd expected, and if it has even as close to as much effort as SSR3(oh god, side-features were SEX), it'll be enjoyable.

  30. @Musashi - think of it this way, Mega Man has different fans, and that's true that no one should take it as "Meh..at least it's -insert game name here-" but it's the fans who complain about a game they're not a fan of. So what if people don't like EXE, why should they complain about it getting another game as opposed to something like X? X has had it's fill, debatable that EXE has had it's fill, but think of it this way, first EXE game we had on the DS lacked something like WiFi. Which it seriously needs. I'm not saying that fans shouldn't hate another series, by all means, hate one, but the point is, keep your mouth shut about it since this is Mega Man, it's got multiple games, and Capcom's going to try and release a new game for what it feels fits. Everyone has a Mega Man game that they either don't like as much, or dislike to the extreme, but again, what's the point of bitching about it? Most of them are classic and zero fans, and the Zero fans have got to be the worst out of the Mega Man fanbase.

  31. Dark Messiah's blog says something like "Only Rockman.EXE can use Program Advances?" which means that it's uncertain. Also, Beast Swing seems to be SSR's navi chip or a seperate chip. Lastly, looking at the screens again, they're so blurry that you can't actually discern whether or not Subaru's sprite isn't simply being flipped, or whether the hand is correct. And by the looks of the hand that's extended, it's simply being flipped. Whether or not he has different hand sprites to differentiate hands when he's being flipped, I'm not sure, but the sprite itself is being flipped for sure. And I seriously pray Rock.EXE has some sort of advantage or more abilities when put up against Subaru.

  32. I wonder why they didn't just make a whole new game with new scenarios for the crossover. I'm guessing budget, but don't you think an all-new game with new graphics and bosses would go over better with the fans? I wonder what the heck they were thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wonder how brutal video game media outlets like GameSpot and IGN is going to be on this. I don't want to even imagine really..

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Jalppy: I know. :\ I wonder also if the Japanese reviews will be different, since it was so wildly popular there. I can see Japan saying, "Lacks a lot of new content, but seeing our old friends back in a mini-revival was nice for series fans." while English-speaking places will say, "The formula was old at about the 4th entry in the series. Coming back to it is just beating a dead horse. Series fans will gobble it up and maybe a few newcomers that played Star Force but skipped out on Battle Network will have a nice renovated intro. Other than that it's all old and stale."

Makes me sad. :\ I love the EXE series and would have loved to have the reviewers enjoy it as much as I did. Why are other repeat-gameplay games accepted but not EXE? I mean, look at RM9. :P

Though I agree that there's not enough new stuff. Come on, if you're going to revive it don't disgrace it! You're making a lot of us who wanted to see one more game disappointed and excited at the same time! It's very confusing. @_@

  35. To everyone wondering what Rockman.EXE's exclusive abilities are: It's a bit strange that this issue is a bit vauge on what Rockman.EXE gets.

However, I recall hearing from people on other sites claiming that this issue is mostly focusing on what Subaru gets, and that Rockman.EXE's exclusive abilities will be explained in the next issue. Not sure if this is true or not though.

Don't forget, we don't know what kind of transformation/armor system is going to be used in this game, and chances are high that EXE's going to have something like that (note that this does not rule out the possibility that Subaru might get transformations/armor of his own too). I'm also seriously hoping that the Navi Customizer gets put into this game as well.

I think they're going to try to make both characters' playing styles rather different. I'm thinking that whatever Rockman.EXE gets is more likely to make him more of a customizable/strategic fighter while Subaru is likely to be focusing on more straightfoward tactics.

Jalppy: I am seriously waiting for the day when these 'professional' video game outlets crash and burn. Especially IGN.

You know they're not professional anymore when you see them post a serious featured article that proceeds to say something along the lines of "I say this because I love trolling Wii owners and seeing their reactions" within the first paragraph. (I'm serious too, they did this about two weeks ago.)

You also know they're not professional anymore when they start touting something like Mega Man 9 to be "a REAL Megaman game" while subsequently stomping on every EXE and SSR fans' face and (painfully ironically) going "none of the rehashed crap" in the same article.

These days, I find blog and forum sites like NeoGAF, Kotaku, and Destructoid to be far more honest and professional, not to mention far less willing to write something off as lazy without even playing through the game first.

Destructoid actually did a review of Star Force 3, and I have to say that it was brutally honest. None of the rabid "OMG this is awesome", and none of the bull[censored] "It's just a rehash".

  36. Guys, they aren't going to put in the customizer, and more likely than not there won't be a style/soul system. This is a simple port "with a little something extra." The customizer and souls were in the future according to this game.

All the proof you need is that they kept the ADD button in.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anon below my previous comment: You forgot the original armor system.

That leaked screenshot from about two weeks ago showed Rockman.EXE using the EXE 2 and 3 custom window (with a slight change, again, that sixth slot above the OK button) instead of the original. Also, the very concept of locking on to an enemy target didn't exist until EXE 6. This shows that they are likely making changes to the battle system. What else do they plan to add in from future games?

What changes there are, we don't know, but I don't think we can call this a "simple port" in terms of anything but the graphics anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  38. But they can't blindly make the gameplay worse. Fact. Gameplay improved over the years. It would be very foolish to return to that for no real good reason.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "Using the EXE 2 and 3 custom window (with a slight change, again, that sixth slot above the OK button) instead of the original. Also, the very concept of locking on to an enemy target didn't exist until EXE 6"

That was so they could show the chip codes, which would be absurd to leave out. There was nothing other than the weird sixth slot different. The armors will still be in, but that's not a transformation, that's an element defense. :P I'm saying they won't add features that didn't exist in the storyline yet. Also... locking on? What screenshot was that in? If you're talking about SSR's ability, then yea... that's an SSR ability. >_>

    ReplyDelete
  40. The original concept of Lock On originated with the Beast Outs. That's what they're saying.

@megarock: They've done it before. SSR1 slaughtered everything that EXE6 had built into it save for easy Lock-On and a less difficult version of the B< combo. Though, if SSR3 means they learned from their mistakes, we actually might see something. I pray the system is decent.

  41. BN became really great. It would be a shame if they got rid of that here. It could be a very sophisticated BN1.
