More 8-bit?

While touching on the subject Mega Man 9's success, Capcom's Christian Svensson let loose an interesting tidbit concerning future "retro/8-bit" styled successors:
" I don't think we were disappointed by it [Mega Man 9]. I can't say right now whether or not you'll see more in this style but I know there's creative interest in doing so. "
Question is, would you like to see something like Mega Man 10 in 8-bit? Or would you prefer a more modern style, maybe something along the lines of Capcom's hand drawn HD Remix efforts?

  1. no HD remake please because we know capcom... they will make a kiddy version of rockman like in rockman rockman...

  2. 8-bit. Having something different than all this HD stuff is nice for a change. Of course, when people start losing interest in 8-bit games, capcom could always decide to go HD, but at the moment, I'd rather have things close to the original.

  3. I would be pretty mad if they made another one 8 bit. Yea, ok, for 9 it was alright I guess. But if they do another I won't be a happy camper. Either HD hand-drawn, 2.5D or at least 16 bit sprites.

  5. HI-DEF 2D SPRITES WITH STYLIZED 3D BACKGROUNDS PLZ.
    That's my 2-cents.

  6. Well the 8-bit was solely for sentimental reasons, bringing oldbies back to their memories, which is awesome. However, it's been done now so there needs to be something new. I personally am fed up with the arbitrary obsession with 8-bit graphics. Sure nice pixel art is awesome (and would be good for MM10) but 8-bit is only good for nostalgia. We've had our nostalgic entry, now move on to new.

  7. Go back to 32bit style and dont forgot to include Forte/Bass as well. I want to know whats going on with him from the last megaman 8 storyline.

  8. Now, let me say this first thing. I LOVED Rockman 9. The retro style was great there. It was fitting for a series revival. However, I just don't think that they can pull that particular gimmick over and over to good effect. I think the novelty will eventually wear off. I'm not really sure what they should do, but I hate to think that classic Rockman can only be good 8-bit. They need to come up with a new style that can emulate 8-bit Rockman speed in a more modern look.

  9. I'd rather have X9 in 3D graphics, and an 8-Bit Megaman 10 would start to make it stale.

  10. I say they should use graphics like maverick hunter x for a megaman 10.

So in other words like powered up but not all cute and stuff, not that thats a bad style or anything i just think it would sell more if it wasnt like that.

  11. @Anon 1: Do you have any idea what Rockman actually looks like? Other than the big heads, Rockman Rockman was very accurate to the original designs.

I'd personally love to see RM10 done with high-res sprites(like SFII Turbo HD Remix, Wario Land: Shake It!, Guilty Gear, etc.) or 3D graphics on a 2D plane (like Rockman Rockman without the chibis). Either way, I'll be a happy camper.

  12. I prefer Mega Man 8 style graphics, crisp, fluid, and colorful.

  13. MM8 wasn't colorful. it was very dull compared to MM7. I think they should make it with enhanced sprites. It just seems more fitting.

  14. Megaman 10 on 8 bit
    Megaman X9 on 16 bit

    Enough said.

  15. No no no!

    I totally disagree! 8-bit MM9 was a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 8-bit MM10 = 8-bit milking, ladies and gentlemen.

Either MHX's 3D style or HD or something far better (WHICH it shouldn't be 8-bit), and something refreshing in the gameplay like combo-killing or stage performance ranking or a modified version of the level designer seen in Powered up.

Stop thinking about the graphics and think of a way to renew (or polish) the gameplay. The formula needs to be redone. GOD GREAT CAPCOM, STOP USING THE SAME STRATEGY OVER AND OVER AGAIN!.

Seen all of you talking about something as ephimeral as the graphics makes me think that time didn't kill classic hardcore MegaMan games...we did u.u

  16. It's time to step it up.

It's time to translate the mechanics and solid, simple, addictive gameplay of the Classic series to a new graphic scheme. ZXA failed to do this.

  17. Honestly, whatever Mega Man 10 may be, it's need to be original in SOME way. Simply reproducing MM9's success wouldn't be a smart move on Capcom's part if they intend to keep classic MM alive as a series. If they keep making repetitive 8bit games, people will lose interest, and MM will become a niche franchise or, in worse case scenario, die as a series.

Personally, I think Capcom would be better off looking at their other series at the moment. A Mega Man 10 would be too soon, I think.

  18. Mega Man 10 if they start working on it should be in full 3d with a control scheme that is fun to play (unlike Legends) and intuitive and interesting gameplay that puts Mega Man back into a triple A franchise.

I love this series to death, but Mega Man has fallen way behind on innovation and keeping with the times. Capcom needs to try something new instead of playing it safe.

  19. 8-bit doesn't just mean the graphics to me, it's the gameplay and sound too. I love the simple gameplay from mm/mm2, and the sound effects from before they started sounding messed up (mm3/on). There's a reason mm9 looked more like mm2 than the rest.

  20. 8-bit? but more polish think of Ninja Gaiden 8-bit... remember this guys http://www.rockmanpm.com/?p=cpapcom/rockman9 that is okay if they gonna make renew another 8-bit grapix :)

  21. another bit game would be lazy, and abuse on capcom's side, making Megaman no longer anything more than a nostalgia device for Capcom.
And if X9 is 16 bit, Ill be pretty mad. Capcom cant keep jumping around like that and then decide to abuse something that never existed for the X series. "retro factor" It doesnt work for the X games, since the systems and graphics were very diverse. 3 games with diff graphics, across 3 console generations. there was no bias towards any 1 style.

I say HD remix. Fans have been requesting it ever since the concept came out.
I mean, wouldnt Megaman like THIS

    and THIS

  22. I didn't buy megaman 9 because it had 8bit graphics its not really a major selling point to me i'd prefer 3d or 32bit graphics

  23. I hope not. I loved 9 a lot, but I rather not be stuck in the past.

  24. How about a new 16 bit MegaMan X? Or better yet how about more Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X?

  25. I'm split on this. I miss the storytelling depth of Mega Man 8, but Mega Man 9 was clearly the better game (between the two), and a lot of that is because it took the Classic series back to its roots and tightened the gameplay back up.

Mega Man 9 was incredibly light on story, though... and it would be nice to get a new chapter that advances the plot a little more, so I think I'm leaning towards the HD treatment.

But I just want Mega Man 10 at all, and would not complain about another 8-bit-styled title. That's what I expect to happen anyway, since Mega Man 9 seems to have performed quite well for Capcom.

  26. I thought the 32-bit style was the greatest. It captured the 16-bit style but added on so much clarity and sooo many sprites. I just don't think they did that great a job with megaman 8.

  27. I find the 8-bit style to be the best style for Classic Mega Man. But I agree that making an 8-bit Mega Man 10 right now would not get the same response as 9 had. 9 was a daring move but it payed off, even the critics were crazy about it, but another 8-bit game right now would seem like just another one of Capcom's milking the cash cow schemes.

If I was working at Capcom, my advice would be to forget about a Mega Man 10 for a few years, continue with the retro feel by making a 16-bit X game or a new Legends and make Mega Man 10 in 3-5 years whe the 8-bit style will be another welcomed change.

  28. I agree with others that have said the retro-style novelty has worn off. Which is why I wouldn't want a 16-bit X9 either (Or even an X9 at all, for that matter; I would've preferred MHX to continue instead, but we can't always get what we want). If I could have it my way, I'd want MM10 to be done in the hand-drawn HD style. MMPU was an excellent remake, so I don't get Anon1's hatred of the kiddy style, when the meat of the game is so damn good.

  29. Novelty aside, Capcom's a good company and all, but Mega Man 9 and Street Fighter 4 bearing extremely strong resemblances to Mega Man 2 and Street Fighter 2, on top of the HD Remixes and the 2 PSP Mega Man games, really puts Capcom in a "stuck in the past" light.

That's why they're unveiling as many new games as possible, although then you wind up with Lost Planet 2 and Okamiden; not to say that they're not games that people don't want, but not very many, and even those games are derivative from earlier source material that already had very MEH receptions.

How Resident Evil and Street Fighter do so well, and yet Mega Man, Devil May Cry, and so many other IPs can't seem to get any recognition is beyond me. I start to wonder if maybe the character designs and stories are too complicated? Starforce's story not catching on and a lack of massive, common household levels of name recognition on the part of Phoenix Wright would certainly seem to indicate that.
