Rockman X DiVE Reaches 8 Million Downloads

Back in April 2020, Capcom Taiwan announced Rockman X DiVE surpassed the one million downloads milestone. Later on, at the beginning of 2021, it was Capcom Japan who reaffirmed that the game contributed heavily to their mobile division growth.

Now that the Steam version is out in North America, Capcom US wasted no time at all to put out a press release. It features an interesting nugget of info: the game has reached over 8 million downloads since 2020.

While number of downloads for a free-to-play game doesn't necessarily correlate with financial success, all the information we have available bodes well for Rockman X DiVE. The game will likely to stay operating for a few, if not more years to come.

Rockman X DiVE is on track to outlive its ill-fated predecessor, Rockman Xover. That game's service ran for around 2 years and 4 months. Rockman X DiVE will celebrate its 2 year anniversary this March.

Let's us know in the comments if you're currently playing the game!

I played a bit of X Dive awhile back but quickly lost interest because of how grindy it was (which I suppose is the norm for these types of games).

    1. If anything, X DiVE would encourage higher sales of X9. Don't be so sure.

    2. Well, that particular comment was just meant to be an unfunny joke - parodying those who believe X Dive is preventing X9 from becoming a reality - but truthfully I can see both sides of this argument.

On one hand, Capcom sees there's interest in the series and may end up making an new mainline game as a result.
But on the other hand, they make so much money from X Dive as is so why even bother making a new one.

Guess only time knows for sure.

  3. Yep! Still playing X DiVE and enjoying it.

  4. I tried to play it on Steam, but noticed US wasn't a region option. When I picked "other", I the game restarted after telling me it's not available in my region. It is though, right?

Yeah, it is painful to see so many people on twitter and here loving this game. Makes me think many all the net who are praising it and acting all satisfied are too young to actually have experienced real MM games, but with the collections and emulators that actually exist in this era (I prefer living now vs the 90s with the net and all the options we have), age isn't an excuse not to experience it even if late to the game. Aside from the decline in standards thee days on certain things, worse yet, the gocha game sure got those people to fork out payments that never end. From what I hear, they nickle and dime people if they want to download more additions vs free fan made mods in many other games. Gotcha alright.

I wouldn't fall for that money making scheme, I wouldn't play it also since it is non-canon and the subpar effects (explosions look cheesy like what is typical on a phone game; even SNES X games had better explosions by far, as did all 8 console X games) and most things just being repetitive rehashing of other X games and it seemingly a different genre akin to side games and seeing how many points you can rack up; it makes the game just not appealing to me. That isn't Megaman gameplay; more like side games like on MM11 completely separate from the actual gameplay, or imagine if they just took a bunch of the Megaman Legends or ZX side quest games and put them in a pack without any of the actual game (missing the meat majority of it all). That is what this looks like to me. Boring... A collection of minigames, nothing more. Makes it not appealing to me, though they alleviated some issues like it not being stuck on a small screen or touch screen by releasing on steam, I'm still not gonna play it. A one trick pony these days.

    1. What??? X DiVE is absolutely not stopping a development of a future X9.

      Delete
    2. you have a great point, but to be fair, X8 also could be described as a bad minigame collection with it having the worst levels in the franchise (Gigavolt is absolutely horrendous, for example, and so is Optic)

this makes me want to go back to 9, which may have been a bit too close to 2, but was a real new game through and through and had challenge. it didn't even cost that much!

      Delete
    3. Yea ride chaser stages are often no fun. Gigavolts was a dumpster fire...

      Delete
    4. X8 was canon and had a story mode and wasn't pure minigames. Most of it was the actual MM gameplay and story mode. Dive looks more akin to just side quests and nothing but seeing how many points you can rack up. Dive seems like nothing but minigames. Big difference. Like if you got rid of most of X8 and 'only' had those options minigames where you se how many metals you can collect, and that being the whole game.

    5. @Gary Daniel
good point, but i'd still say that X8 was the closest a platformer game in the series got to something like xdive before 2013 and onwards. not just the ride chasers, but also the enemy score stages like Optic and overly easy autoscrollers like Earthrock, while games like 9 (and 10 too) felt like they were fully focused on what they tried to be and were just fun games for a pretty cheap price. but yeah, X8 is definitely not as bad as xdive.

      Delete
    6. I kinda liked x8s intermissions. Gave it some replay value. But it certainly isnt perfect.

      Delete
    7. Yeah, some of them were good, but best of all, X8 actually had MMX style gameplay... story mode, level select, platforming, the moves, the feeling of character movement and controls. Also decent effects too and with gamepad and mostly side scrolling gameplay. Even X7 in some ways was ok with good explosions, though one big problem with X7 for me is that the movements were sluggish, you can get knocked on your ass with a big delay, camera angles, too much 3D gameplay (that is better confined to a series that started off 3D, like Legends), etc. X8 corrected this mostly.

X8 was good and better than X6 and X7, I think most can agree with. It is odd that this was not redeeming enough to cause them to make an X9, yet somehow X7's failure was not bad enough to stop an X8, but X8 oddly enough in some ways comes across as being intended to be the end. At the end, we see Light's message of his desire for humans and robots to live in harmony, making me wonder if they intended to make an X9 + Sigma's mind seemingly dead for good. so a kind of cliffhanger but closure at the same time in different ways.

I did hear long ago around 2005 on the MM Network bulletin forum (I was once part of that forum) that they were working on an X9 briefly though in 2005 only for it to be canned early on. A member named Zan was very knowledgeable about Megaman in general an a member on the forums back then, and I went by High Max.

    8. i personally disagree on X8 as i'd take X6 over X8 any day for many reasons, including controls, but you do have a point that most seemed to like it, especially since the game was sort of "modernized" visually. i've heard it sold really badly, which i find really weird, but hey, ZX sold badly too, and that was a DS megaman exploration game.

as for whether they'd leave sigma dead or not, no they wouldn't because it will still be defeated with X and Mother Elf and any other death before that is pointless due to Zero series canon. the entire reason why lumine was created is probably to replace sigma: think about it, is there any character difference between lumine and mhx sigma beyond one of them having a pseudo-biblical coat of paint? the reason sigma died is for another one to become the always returning villain... which failed.

    9. I'm not sure why other people liking something that you don't annoys you so much, but that definitely says more about you then the people enjoying X DiVE in peace lol. The old games never went anywhere, and X DiVE ain't a replacement for anything. Maybe you should just go back to playing those old games until X9 gets here so you can stop being so bitter about people's opinions? Idk that's what I would do.

Also, assuming that anyone who likes DiVE has never played an actual Rockman game is just annoying. You're not the most cultured guy in a room for not wanting to play a freaking video game, man. Maybe you could just learn how to see things from other people's perspectives instead of complaining about their tastes? Idk that's what I would do.

    12. Sprite, I like X6 too. I can't say which I like more. At least X6 has Wily in there discreetly, and I like stories with him in there behind the scenes. As for Sigma, the Sigma virus can live on without a mind behind it, though Wily's consciousness is integrated into part of the virus somewhere. There are lots of hints that Sigma was not supposed to be coming back regardless if Lumine came back or not. Sigma virus does not = Sigma's mind embedded into it. Sigma's last words come across as a very final, no witting assertion he will be back, he acts shocked, then nothing but a husk and no viral for or anything. Then Zero at the end saying if Lumine was right, then Sigma won't be coming back. Sigma said to X 'don't worry it will all be over soon and we will never have to meet again'. Some argue he knew or planed on dying for good. Also the X8 Demo says 'res assured, he won't be coming back'. Of course the virus and his DNA live on.

    13. Mike was bad mouthing me, no doubt. His screen name and him caring enough to make an insulting post to one person (I wasn't targeting one person) says a lot about him. Also who cares about culture or one being popular? Those are infantile concerns. Also, I can see things from others' perspective and I see many lack standards or don't think deeply about many things (critical thinking is sorely lacking as is standards of evidence).

Why would someone go back and endlessly replay old games (once in a while is fine, and there is more to life than games), and who says there will be new legit games for sure or ones on pay to the main timeline of the 90s and 2000s style? Waiting for what? Demonstrate to me they are making more vs hype. Things look bleak so far. And yeah, I bet many never played actual MM games. Demonstrate they have. Sometimes the way some talk on twitter about this, it makes me doubt that. But some make it obvious they have.

You better believe I will complain when people might ruin it for the rest of us. Loving this too much sends a message to Capcom that it is ok to keep making low budget smartphone games and not real MM games and may very well hurt the future of MM, regardless of some saying it won't. Just like Konami games the pat 10 years with series dying or the genres being ruined. Series like Contra, Castlevania, Gradius, others that many around here probably haven't touched, while some have (Shrap probanbly has). At least R-type and Raiden seems alive still. Flight simulator style games like Freespace and Descent are mostly dead, sadly, aside from fan made campaigns and source code enhancement and releasing better textures and models, which I still play. At least Doom is strong still, and I love the new ones too, can use mods and play fan made megawads for the old ones and Brutal Doom / Project Brutality.

Anyways, maybe Mike should think how this could hurt most of us who want real MM and change the first part of his screen name too (calling himself idiot is odd). We have every right to complain, but my complaint was not targeting one person, his was intended to be personal. So I'm personal right back, but trying to be civil about it. Anyways, if Mike doesn't like it, he can ignore my post, but I must have struck a nerve. Oh well. I will complain if I want and express my feelings and frustration about this, and I wasn't making it personal.

    17. Story and canon don't really hold much value. The gameplay itself is already more satisfying than X8, which did indeed feel like a collection of mini-games, specially with its pace-breaking loading rooms that added nothing to the game. They were a good opportunity to add fun enemy gauntlets, but they dropped the ball hard on that and is one thing X DiVE does miles better. And don't even get me started on X8's fetish for instant death, which only further ruins that game's pacing.

for me they do. if i wanted a game with just gameplay, especially if the gameplay is just carried over from something else, why not hack/mod an already existing game with level design i myself would like? the instakill hazards are cool though, even if i hate x8's continue system.

    24. And funny one person here said we don't have patience when we been patient long enough. Also too much patience and nothing gets done. Also with current tech, lacking anti-aging or the fact anything could happen killing people off, waiting too long means many fans won't live long enough to see future MM games. Just saying 'patience is ignoring the many years of nothing happening and pretending fans can live forever. Some may even have terminal cancer. They don't have time to be patient. I seemingly have plenty of time, and could make it to anti-aging, doing well so far, but many won't. More should think about that before calling people out on patience here.

      Delete
    25. Saying this makes you look more impatient.

      Delete
    26. And many have a right to be at this point. Shrap gets it, I'm sure. A few years of patience is enough. I'm sorry that you are content with endlessly waiting and pretending like there is no issue. Patience only goes so far and sometimes is an excuse to do nothing. Balance is better. Anyways, if that is all you got to add, you did nothing to invalidate my reply. Nice try. Also yeah, people with limited lifespan have no time to be. Tell that to fans who are on their death bed to be patient and keep being non-understanding. That would be very insensitive. My point on that part stands no matter what you say. You think people will live forever, it seems, and have all the time in the world.

Also why do you think I care if I look patient to an 'unknown' person let alone one who never saw or met me as if I was a somebody or public figure who has a rep to worry about? You think that hurts me how I look to you and your subjective view?

    30. Mega Man 11 is one of the better games from the classic series. I wouldn't just call it "alright"

      Delete
    31. Yeah, 11 is a good game. I bought that along with the classic, X, and Zero/ZX collections on steam in 2018/19. My only grip with 11 is the lack of Protoman and Bass and not more Wily stages. Good stuff though. I liked when they used to do 2 castles in games 4-6, and MM3 made it longer too with revisits to stages that were altered where some big Wily bot bosses copy MM2 boss moves.

      Delete
    32. 11 was good but not great, factoring in the above. I liked it. The music was decent, the gear system was ok. The responsivity felt perfect at least to me. Bosses were interesting.

Points deducted for only two full end castle stages (the last two being real short) and wussing out on a masters name translation cause reasons. Having Blues and Forte present in some fasion would have been nice but not a huge deal.

      Still it was fun.

      Delete
    33. @Pants
i would argue against that, as at least 10 games from the original series are better, in my opinion, but ah well.

For me, I'd put MM5 at the bottom. It's always just been "there" versus the others which all seem to have a hallmark for me of some sort or another.
MM being the first game I owned and in the series
MM3 being the first I rented, played AND beat
MM4 being the first "sequel" I got to play and was excited for
MM6 being the first game I bought for myself
MM7 being the first SNES game
MM8 being the reason I bought a PlayStation
MM9 being the return to form, for what it is anyway
      MM10 having 3 playable characters
MM11 for being what it is

      MM5 always just existed.

    37. I know. R&f is a side story.
And sadly I still cant beat it... that 2nd king stage last boss gets me every time.

And mm2. Come on, its mm2.

    38. "Anyways, maybe Mike should think how this could hurt most of us who want real MM and change the first part of his screen name too (calling himself idiot is odd). We have every right to complain, but my complaint was not targeting one person, his was intended to be personal."

You still haven't actually explained how this is hurting the series besides a borderline conspiracy theory about Capcom "getting lazy" and not making sequels if it gets too much positive reception. Even though the producer of Rockman 11 has said that the main reason an X9 hasn't happened is because money talks more then fandom with Capcom. So... wouldn't the success of X DiVE actually be a GOOD sign if what you actually want is an X9? I'm not even trying to be rude, your post just comes across is fear mongering over something that is actually going to probably benefit your cause in the long run? And that's even assuming Capcom treats X9 as a big deal to begin with, when for all we know they just see it as a quick buck.

All of that to say. Being the aggressive and vocal fan who's tired of waiting is literally just going to make you an extremely bitter person about the series in the long run. And I am speaking from experience about this, because I've been there multiple times. And it never benefitted me in a positive manner. Be frustrated that a new game didn't come out sooner, but don't let it dominate your headspace and constantly irritate you to the point that you have to make complaining about it something you do often. It doesn't grow the X fandom, it humiliates it. Just try to enjoy what X content we have and revel in that fandom with others, or find other things to fill the void.

Hence the whole, "those old games still exist" point I was making lol. Although I do apologize for being really aggressive before. It just kinda struck a nerve for me how you went onto a post specifically celebrating the game's success to complain about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    40. Well they also said if MM11 and the X collections sold well, X9 would come out. That the release of X9 depended on that. And those did sell well a long time ago. but nothing, so yeah, I'm a little concerned. I just miss the days when a MM game was released every year or two, and even then, many were high quality. In the 90s and 2000s, MM was truly thriving (most of the time).

With all our fancy tech these days, assuming low budget, as they tend to be, they should be able to churn them out quickly with less staff and at low cost and do so while retaining decent quality. Advertising better = more sales to boot. None of us are getting any younger until some gene therapy for anti-aging comes out. There is no reason one has to wait 8 years between MM10 and 11, and as long as we have after 11 when back in a lower tech era, we saw a sequel once every year or two and still good quality (much of the time). I'm just baffled that despite the collections and 11 selling well, they seemed to go back on their word about an X9. Now if X, Legends, and ZX were all back on their feet and released at a decent pace with good quality and at least get a conclusion, I think we would have no reason to complain. At this point, many would be buying it up like hot cakes since that is what I think most of us want + the content drought for years. It would be a big deal if released right now.

Of course a society obsessed with accumulating wealth can hold back things, though it can promote things too, but this is not the Ferengi home world. We humans should be better than this. We need to evolve as a species. Automation will surely force a change to our system in the coming decades just to keep a consumer base, and hopefully reduce this obsession with monetary gain, which is quite depressing actually when put above all else (probably one reason depression is so high because people feel valued based on net worth and not as a person). Productive tech and mature renewables + reducing desperation and uncertainty will go a long ways to reduce greed and prioritizing accumulation of things, I think. Then I imagine more games and things being done as hobbies or personal projects, like we see with modders vs this money fetish that is not in moderation, but excessive and has gone too far lately.

      Delete
    41. Right. X DiVE is simply a game to see how interested newcomers who bought the collections would be in a new game. With lots of fanservice for the hardcore enthusiasts.

It won't be the rebirth or death of X. We have to leave that up to 11 to decide. And I'm not sure if there's any official statements from Capcom about being pleased with 11's sales. But I'm not worried.

Not just financial success, it's also doesn't correlate with the game's success in general. More than 90% of the players drop a free mobile game after one hour or less.
And from the remaining gamers only a small portion of them actually pay for microtransactions
