Rockman Headed to Japanese 3DS Virtual Console

It's time to buy the the original Famicom/NES classic all over again!

According to Nintendo of Japan, Rockman is headed to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console on July 18th for 500 Yen (roughly $6.30). Mind you, this is a standard Virtual Console release. You won't find stereoscopic 3D here.

No word yet on a release for North America or Europe, though it's certainly within the realm of possibility. Hopefully we'll hear something soon!

  1. It truly is a sad age when we start getting excited about re-releases... for the 12th time. RIP ROCKMAN.

  2. I already have this game from the Wii's virtual console, an emulator, and the original NES/Famicom cartridge. D:

I guess this is okay for someone who wants to play this game on the go, which is nice. Too bad I don't own or have any intention of owning a 3DS.

  3. I would have bought this if it were 3D Classics. I mean, they went and made a Rockman2 3D Classics prototype and everything, and then they choose to put up a regular VC now? Obvious and well-worn statements aside, but... Capcom aren't trying at all.

  4. Geez, I guess the whole 3D thing is kind of dead. I thought they wanted to release a 3D version of this game.

  5. It would be pretty cool if Nintendo allowed cross-platform compatibility between Wii/Wii U and 3DS, like with the Virtual Console library. I like that I can transfer my PSOne Classics between my PSP and my PS3 and play them (and I'll be hopefully getting a Vita this year, so I can do the same there). So it would be nice if I could take my NES VC games I bought on Wii and play them on my 3DS.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I remember hearing about the possibility of Mega Man 2 being released as a 3D Classic? I remember seeing the story about it on this blog, so I thought it would just be a matter of time. I'll definitely get that game as a 3D Classic (though personally I'd probably get the whole series if they did them all as 3D Classics).

Also, last anon, come on now. Don't fault Capcom for allowing Nintendo to put this game on 3DS. It just allows more people to have more ways to experience the greatness that is Rockman. Besides, this is more Nintendo's problem of being lazy, rather than Capcom--they could just to do more with the 3DS eShop catalog.

  6. While I wish it was a 3D Classics release, I'll still buy this for the 3DS Virtual Console. It'll be nice to have it on the go.

  7. It's Mega Man on the 3DS!...just, not the Mega Man game everyone wanted.

  8. Darn it! I want Rockman/X on XBox...

  9. How about completing the Mega Man collection on the Wii Virtual Console first, Capcom? There's only three games left anyway (MM6, MM7 and MMX3). Not to mention GB Mega Man II through V. Then you may start to do it all over again on the 3DS VC if you must.

  10. @GeminiSaint: Capcom won't release the Gameboy titles on the Wii's VC, that VC is really only for console games. The Gameboy titles are much more likely to be released on the 3DS VC.

  12. @Anon's complaining about lack of 3D for it: If you paid any attention to what Iwata was saying last year, making the 3D classics costs ALOT more than simply porting it, and puts it near the point of not being profitable enough. I have a feeling the 3D classics series may be saved for titles that may sell more. For example, Megaman 2 or Super Mario Bros 3.

It's not a matter of being lazy. It's a matter of making it profitable and money. Now stop slandering companies when you don't know all the facts.

  13. Man, I've all but given up on trying to vote with my money towards Capcom. Either we buy this, and encourage Capcom to continue whoring Classic series rereleases alone, or we don't buy it, and encourage them to kill the entire franchise.

I already bought the GB game on the 3DS VC as the "any sort of Mega Man on my 3DS even though it's not the Mega Man I actually want" purchase. With four versions of MM1 under my belt already (NES, GCN, Wii, PSP), I think I'm gonna have to draw the line here.

Call me when they get Xtreme2 up there.

I'm sorry, but I just can't get excited about Classic. And besides... isn't that game available on everything anyways? It's like the FF1 of Megaman...

  15. @Dr. Jerk:
Really now? I thought it went without saying that I expect MM II through V on the 3DS Virtual Console, not on Wii, hence why I didn't include Dr. Wily's Revenge (MMI) in my list, which already is on the 3DS eshop.
