MvC3 Producer Talks Zero's Inclusion Over Mega Man

Whatever hope was left for Mega Man in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 has pretty much diminished. MvC3 producer Ryota Niitsuma, in an interview with Spong, discussed why Capcom chose to go with Zero over an incarnation of Mega Man for the game's final roster:

"I assume you’re talking about the original Mega Man. There was a Mega Man slot for this game – we had room for a character from that series. But when it came to the propriety of that character being in a fighting game, Mega Man has some problems.
If we were to adapt the original Mega Man character into a fighting game he would have to have a lot more extra moves and abilities, and that would then create a different Mega Man entirely. You couldn’t retain his original character as he is. So we looked into other Mega Mans, and decided that Zero had the best list of moves already in existence when it comes to fitting into a fighting game."
-------

I dunno about that... I mean, Mega Man seemed to work for the past two MvCs, right? And, hey, as The Mega Man Network noted, some bright chaps managed to whip this up. It's not like it's 100% impossible.

There's always a chance for DLC, but Niitsuma's comment makes me feel like even that's a no-go. Guess we'll have to settle for Tron and Zero, for now.

Thanks to everyone who sent this tip in. Apologies for not getting on this sooner!

  1. Yeah it's not as if mega man kills bosses and aborbs there powers or anything. Not like theres 90 something robot masters to choose from.

I guess changing the fuck'n color is too hard to do.

    Fuck'n lazy ass capcom

  5. *apathy*
I personally love having Zero over Rock anyway. He brings in nothing new that hasn't already been done in previous games.. and if I wanted to play Rock I'd play the previous two games.

  6. It's not surprising. Zero is an actual melee fighter and fits into the game. While Megaman has always been little more than a hadouken spammer with special attacks. I love Megaman, but he just doesn't fit into a 2D fighter unless that fighter is specifically built around ranged fighters. It's also a matter of choosing the better character, not that Megaman is a bad choice, just a subpar one.

  7. Actually, most people that I've seen think that Mega Man's moveset did NOT work for the first two MvC games (which, honestly, I SORTA have to agree). Considering that Jill is not in the initial on-disc roster because of a complete moveset overhaul, it sorta makes sense that he's not in the initial roster with a brand new moveset (being in with his original moveset is a different story).

Anyways, I'm curious as to how many people here will no longer buy the game simply because one character didn't make the roster. =D

Me? I cant, because I only has a Wii. D:

  8. Also, @Krazy Monkey: Nah, that excuse doesn't hold a candle to their reasoning for not putting in Ghost Rider. :D

  9. Hmmm… (nods) u_u …
I think this explanation makes perfect sense.

Also, more people can look at Zero and the word “WARRIOR!” easily comes to mind, even more so with all the moves Zero has. The same can’t really be said for Mega Man, or X… poor X. =(

Would be nice if the two were at least DLC, but if that doesn’t happen, I could totally live with that.

  10. Capcom's just lazy. Count how many re-hashes they used that are from Tatsunoko Vs Capcom...

  12. You all complained about Universe and whined and moaned about how you wanted a new Legends and X game.

Oh look Capcom listened to what you said.

You crapped in the metaphorical bed as a fanbase guys, now sleep in it.

  13. SEE??? Now you know. Megaman for MvsC3 is dead. Thanks a lot, Capcom! You lost our faith! Sheesh!

Megaman would be fine without adding some previous Robot Master weapons... You know Tornado Hold, Leaf Shield, and Rockball? Sometimes they're useful against rushdown and others. Man... snap! He should stayed true like that. Not giving him some more weapons! >_<

  15. - The obvious: Mega Man had a moveset already from MvC1/2.

    - Volnutt had a completely different one in TvC. The point: It's not impossible or difficult to cultivate a decent and original fighting game iteration of a run-and-shoot platform character.

    - Further evidence: Roll in MvC1/2 is a weaker clone of Mega Man. They gave her a brand new and very unique moveset in TvC using a broom and bucket. The point: They can do it to Roll but not Mega?

    - Holes in excuse: If the number of potential moves for Mega was the issue, explain Dante's bloated moveset. If Mega's old moveset was too weak or outdated to recycle, make a brand new one like you did for Jill.

    - My final thought: Tron made it in to represent Servbots and recent hype for MML3. She and Zero are also the only two MM characters in history to get their own games. Zero's popularity is obvious. He was originally up for the main character of MMX had Inafking had his way, got his own series, and then a spin-off in which kids turn into him. He also had an easily portable model and moveset from TvC. It seems sacrilege to leave Mega out, but then again, how many times has the main protagonist of Darkstalkers been left out in favor of boobs? Tron and Zero are solid reps of the MM franchise. My only problem is Niitsuma's half-assed excuse. He would have been better off not commenting.

  16. Ah, who cares. Dumb game anyway.

  17. That's a load of horse. It's obvious he (and Capcom) have an unnatural fetish for Zero and an unwavering desire to please all of his loyal yaoi-fans.

Supposing that swill he was spouting was true, what's he saying? That he and his staff lack the creativity to make Megaman work in a fighting game? He's worked before, and they're only going to cut & paste the Zero from TvC anyway, so there's a major hypocrisy. And for that matter, what makes Tron Bonne so much more suited for a fighting game than Megaman?

This guy's such a lousy liar he should run for office!

  18. @Anonymous under Alyssa W: OMG! A WHOLE 2 OUT OF 36!! WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!??!? NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT THEY'VE MADE IT SO THAT ONLY TWO CHARACTERS OUT OF 36 HAVE SIMILAR MOVESETS (Ryu and Akuma)!11!1

  19. Also, people here are taking this much better than I expected. Then again, this place isn't the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 GameFAQs, which is currently undergoing Armageddon.

  20. I'm willing to guess that this guy never even remotely considered using Volnutt (High Tier, really good moveset from TvC), or one of the Network (EXE and SSR) Rockman's.

Both of whom, have a VERY large amount of melee based attacks.

I'm not saying "ZOMG NOT BAING ANYMOR" or anything. I'm just saying that my hype has dropped a bit. Seeing Gouki/Akuma in made me really hyped up for the hopes of seeing my old MvC2 team return (Felicia, Gouki, "Rockman"), but it seems that this will not be the case. :/

  21. What a crock of shit. Lies and excuses are what Capcom is best at when it comes to common sense. You're right, Protodude. Mega Man did work in the past Marvel vs Capcoms so that is definitely no excuse. I mean, c'mon, if Card Saga Wars can make a perfect, awesome AND functional movelist for X, as well as that recent move list for MegaMan in MVC3 made with sprites, then why can't Capcom of all compamies make something as good or better? I'll tell you why. Laziness, lack of creativity and excuses to try to justify their copy paste of Zero. When whoever said "X fans will be happy" it's quite clear he meant "X fans will just have to deal."

Oh and for all that think Zero brings something new to the table? He has already been in 2 games, not counting Onimusha Blade Warriors. MegaMan has been in two games before. So there is no real difference and like I said, Capcom should get creative with MegaMan, like that custom move sheet a fan made a little while back, and overhaul him. There is just no excuses, lol.

  22. My interest in MvC 3 is zero (no, not Zero, zero) until some version of Mega Man is made available as DLC... and now it doesn't sound like he will be.

Capcom’s obvious distaste for their own mascot is so depressing for dedicated series fans like us. Stuff like this makes me wish Zero had never happened… he ended up really hurting the franchise and especially the real Blue Bomber.

  24. I AM SO MAD AT NITSUMAS COMMENTS! He would have been better off not saying anything. I didn't even care about megaman NOT being in till he opened his trap. NOW I WANT MM OR X!!! HELL BRING BACK VOLNUTT!!!
