MM Titles On IGN's Top 100 NES Games

IGN ranked the top 100 NES games of all time recently, and to no one's surprise, Mega Man titles are abundant throughout. The rankings:
  • Mega Man 4 (#95)
  • Mega Man 5 (#84)
  • Mega Man 6 (#58)
  • Mega Man 1 (#30)
  • Mega Man 3 (#16)
and finally at #4.... Mega Man 2, just behind Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda.

The full top 100 is located here. Each game that placed gets their own dedicated page complete with videos and IGN staff commentary.

Thanks, Fabiano.

  1. Mega Man 2 definitely deserves a top spot. Was the Legend of Zelda game it ended up behind, incidentally, Ocarina of Time?

  2. All 6 NES Mega Man games ranked. You missed Mega Man 5, which placed #84.

  3. Woohoo, like we all didn't already know people thought the first megaman games were some of the best NES games. :P

  5. Yes AML, Ocarina of Time was on a list of the top 100 NES games. People just love it THAT much.

  6. @AML: No, all titles on the list are NES games. It fell behind "The Legend of Zelda," "Super Mario Bros.," and "Super Mario Bros. 3."

I think this is a good list of top 100 games, though I think Dragon Warrior 2, Final Fantasy II and III, and a couple other obscure games could have made the list, but the Rockman games are placed very accordingly.

  7. - Too bad that MegaMan4 is my second best game. First one is MegaMan1. ^_^;;

  8. I disagreed. Megaman/Rockman 1-6 rocks! :)

  9. Got to say, I am kind of surprised 6 made it ahead of 5 and 4, I loved 5...

  10. What? MM3 FAR surpasses MM2. Such travesty.

  11. & MM1 far surpasses them both, Gauntlet.

Mega Man 5 isn't italicized in the post, BTW.

  12. re: & MM1 far surpasses them both, Gauntlet.

Pssshhh, in yer dreams, maybe. No passwords + 6 bosses + Gutsman's lift + instant die on spikes despite flashing = inferior than MM2 and 3.

  13. @ Pssshhh, in yer dreams, maybe. No passwords + 6 bosses + Gutsman's lift + instant die on spikes despite flashing = inferior than MM2 and 3.

No passwords - Stop being a pussy
6 bosses - Acceptable for the first. Or does the X1 armor suck in design because it's the simplest?
Gutsman's lift - What about it?
Instant die on spikes despite flashing - That's how it was. One could just as easily say 2 & 3 suck because it gives you that extra crutch.

  14. I'm disappointed to see that Mega Man 3 is ranked behind Mega Man 2. I don't know about anyone else here, but am I the only one who thinks that Mega Man 2 is one of the most overrated Mega Man games of all time? Just about everywhere I go, whenever that game is mentioned, so many people act as if it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. As a result, Capcom only paid attention to all those Mega Man 2 fanatics while Mega Man 9 was in development, and couldn't have cared less about what the rest of the fanbase wanted.

For example, they decided to remove the charge beam and slide kick, abilities that have been established in the series for OVER TEN YEARS, simply because of the fact that they weren't in Mega Man 2. What's worse, is the fact tha Keiji Inafune claimed that they were "unncecessary", and didn't even bother coming up with a story-related explanation as to why he couldn't use them. Instead, he and the rest of the staff just flat-out acted as if he's never had them.

Another gripe I have with it is the lack of Bass and Treble. Why they decided not to include those two characters, despite the fact that they have such a huge fanbase, I'll never know. If it was because they weren't in the NES games, then that would be a lame excuse, because Auto wasn't in them either. If it was because they thought he didn't have any relevance to the storyline, then the same thing could be said about Proto Man. He didn't even HAVE a story, despite the fact that he was a playable character. Oh, wait, I forgot... It all boils down to one thing: No one else's opinion mattered except for all those idiotic Mega Man 2 fanboys who treat the game like the Secong Coming of Christ, or something.

Anyway, back to what I was saying before, I'm disppointed to see that Mega Man 3, a far superior game, is ranked below Mega Man 2. Mega Man 3 was better than it in almost every possible way. Aside from the addition of the slide kick, it had better music, level designs, more stages, you name it. It's quite a shame that there are so many people who are WAY too blind to see that.

  15. The original MEGA MAN is certainly a great game, but I don't think I'd rate it ahead of any of the other ones necessarily, except possibly MEGA MAN 6 because it was kind of a lazy attempt on Capcom's behalf.

I really try not to rate MEGA MAN with the same conditions I'd rate the others because it was the first in the series and was still a learning process for its designers. For what it is, though, it is a challenging game and was unique at the time.

  16. Yeah I was a little shocked Mega Man 6 was "better" than 4 an 5 and I loved those two. I heard 6 was rushed or something. Great game still but yeah. What's up with the smaller/weaker sounding Mega Buster? I heard Dr. Light did something to it or whatever...I forget.

  17. I agree. MM2 is my fav, and I don't like much MM4 because it's the hardest of the 6 NES Mega Man games (7 with the obscure Rockboard) with its long Castles with repetitive music and a tough Wily Machine. But MM5 is my 2nd fav and it ended up behind others, maybe because it's too easy compared to others?

  18. Honestly, I like being able to freely revisit stages, personally.
