New Rockman Goods at Capcom Retail Store

Capcom recently stocked some new Rockman goods at the E-Capcom retail store in Tokyo. Limited edition chocolates, postcards, buttons and stickers featuring the Blue Bomber (and other Capcom brands) went on sale yesterday. Check 'em out:

This lovely postcard will run you 315 Yen.

Decorative chocolates, 60 Yen a pop.

Rockman buttons! 136 Yen each

The Capcom store is located on the on the third floor of the Mediage entertainment complex, which is located at Odaiba in Tokyo. If you have the means to get there, be sure to snatch these trinkets before they're gone!

... Okay, so maybe this stuff isn't all that interesting. Still, it's good to see Capcom pushing some new Rockman merch. It was starting to get a little quite on that front!

Mega Man Legends 3: Barrett vs. Tron Theme Recreated

If you've followed Mega Man Legends 3 from day one, then you're probably familiar with some of the game's music. We were fortunate enough to hear a new rendition of the classic Flutter theme, and some snippets of original pieces by way of gameplay footage.

The above video is a custom edit of one of Legends 3's new themes, "Barret vs. Tron Bonne." Unlike the Flutter remix, Capcom never released this one publicly, so avid Legends fan Hypershell took it upon himself to recreate it from what little game footage and trailers we saw.

Oh, and would you look at that; we've got a link to download the song right here. Enjoy it, everyone! Hopefully, there's more where that came from... if we ever get the Prototype.

Thanks for All the Hits

I'm thrilled to announce Rockman Corner hit 5,000,000 page views earlier this week, a milestone that deserves a big thank you!  When I first opened this place up in 2008, I wasn't sure I'd attract an audience, let alone become a viable source for news and whatnot.  But here we are and I have you to thank. My little corner of the net would be nothing without you.

I send my sincerest thanks to my companions at The Mega Man Network, the Capcom Unity crew, everyone at Get Me Off the Moon, UDON Entertainment, Game Informer's Tim Turi, and Destructoid's Tony Ponce. It's been an absolute pleasure working with all of you.

I realize Mega Man news has been sluggish. Good Mega Man news, at least. In spite of that, you guys stuck it out with me. Together we've weathered game cancellations and much drama. Better days are yet to come, I believe. I hope that we'll embrace whatever Capcom has in store for the Blue Bomber together.

Here's to Rockman Corner reaching five million. Thanks, everyone.

Misadventures of Tron Bonne Doesn't Make the PSN Cut

It's common knowledge by now that a PlayStation Network re-release of Mega Man Legends (and possibly its sequel) isn't happening. But what about The Misadventures of Tron Bonne? The quirky side-game everybody adores? Yeeeeeah... that's not happening either.

On Ask Capcom, user PluggedBus asked whether or not the game failed an I.P. sweep; the process of determining if software infringes any copyrights and contracts. Capcom Unity Community Manager GregaMan stepped in to deliver the bad news:

"Unfortunately, my understanding is that MoTB had some copyrighted music in it preventing a rerelease =\ A bummer, to be sure!"

I haven't played Misadventures in some time, so I can't pinpoint any specific examples of copyrighted music. However, the Japanese version of the game does feature two vocalized pieces, "Love Letter" and "Magic", sung by Mayumi Iizuka, Tron's voice actress.  Not that that has any relevance to the English version, but contract issues with her songs could explain the game's absence on the Japanese PSN.

So no Misadventures for PlayStation Network, I'm afraid. On the positive side, if you own a copy of the game, its value just skyrocketed!

Happy 10th Anniversary, Mega Man Zero

That's right, Mega Man Zero is a whopping ten years old. On April 26, 2002, the original title hit store shelves in Japan.

Looking back at the old preview materials from Zero 1, I feel needlessly old. Toru Nakayama's artwork especially triggers some fond memories.  At the time, no one really knew if the art style reflected some sort of enigmatic plot element. All sorts of theories were thrown on the table: was Zero infected by some sort of virus? Was this even Zero at all? In hindsight, it's kinda funny how the latter turned out to be pretty spot on.

For many fans, Mega Man Zero fulfilled the dream of a "darker" Mega Man. Things were more serious: more mature, edgier and bleaker. Death lurked around every corner. There was blood, too.

Initially, the prospect of a "grim dark" Mega Man filled fans with a sense of uncertainty. Some welcomed the bleak dystopian setting with open arms; others not so much. The biggest fear, I recall, was if this darkness would become the new norm for Mega Man. That prospect never came to fruition and, quite frankly, I don't think it ever will. Even so, much of Mega Man Zero's success is tied to the fact it tried to be different and embraced this brooding, dreadful world -- a far cry from the classic series' setting.

A decade later, the games play just as good if not better than many of today's action-platformers. Sure, they can be pretty tough sometimes. GameBoy breaking tough. But it's all in good fun; you come out of Zero's trials and tribulations with a sense of accomplishment. It feels good to win -- to conquer over something you once believed was impossible. That's Mega Man Zero for you.

So cheers to you, Mega Man Zero... and thank you, Inti-Creates, for creating four amazing games.

Get Me Off the Moon Reaches 100,000 Members

No less than nine months since its inception, the tenacious Get Me Off the Moon Mega Man Legends 3 campaign has arrived at their goal of 100,000 members. Convention appearances, contests, fan-art... it's all led up to this.

It remains to be seen if this is the catalyst needed to breath new life into the Legends 3 project; nevertheless, this is a crowning moment for everyone involved. Great job, everyone!

Onward an upwards.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Launches on iOS

It wasn't too long ago word came forth that Capcom's fighting masterpiece, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, was due out for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Well, the promised April 25th release has arrived --  the game has gone live.

The iOS version is an uncompromising port, loaded with the characters and modes that made the original game famous. Mega Man, Roll, Tron and the Servbots... the gang's all here.

Control-wise, Capcom included a variety of input options such as the new "flick button.” Simply swipe your finger to dish out all sorts of attacks and combos. In my experience, the flick button isn't exactly the perfect substitute for traditional buttons, but it gets the job done... to a certain degree.

For a limited time, you can purchase MvC2 for a discounted $2.99 (regularly $4.99).  Snag yourself a download from the App store.

It's 'Operation' with a Guts Man Twist

We've seen some pretty cool custom creations here at Rockman Corner, and today adds one more to the mix. Donald “Kodykoala” Kennedy, the man behind some of the zaniest customs around, has done it again. Behold, Operation: Guts Man

"This is a working game that works just like regular operation, except the board is using a Jazwares Gutsman vinyl, so the board is a little more 3D," writes Kody.  "I used an Ironman Operation game for the little pieces, the graphics for the cards, and the frame for the game."

Truly a feat of engineering.

Doubtful Hasbro would ever sign-off on this ingenious concept, so I'm keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed Kody will choose to sell it someday. In the meantime, feel free to check out some pictures of the complete set at Kody's Flickr page. It's amazing.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Five Year-Old Pitches New Mega Man Games to Capcom

This is Mark. He's five years-old. He loves Mega Man... a lot. Not only is he well versed in Blue Bomber lore, but he's got plenty of groundbreaking ideas for new Mega Man games. The second coming of Keiji Inafune, folks.

The video's a bit long, but man; this is probably the cutest thing you'll see all day. Oh, and try to stick around to 7:20 when a bombshell is dropped on our little hero. The reaction is priceless.

Don't let Mark down, Capcom.

Morishita's New DASH Album Offers a Possible Ray of Hope

Well, here's a doozy of a story coming from 100,000 Strong for Mega Man Legends 3. Before we proceed, I suggest you grab a shaker of salt. Ready? Okay.

As you well may know, Reika Morishita is the singer behind the Rockman DASH theme songs “Another Sun” and “Your Wind is Blowing.” She has shown a great amount of sympathy towards Legends fans following the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3, and has since worked closely with 100,000 Strong to raise awareness for the movement. To this end, Morishita announced plans to reprise her two DASH themes.

Tonight, 100,000 Strong brings us an update on this project following a meeting between Morishita and a member from Team Japan. Grains of salt from here:

"To support our community, she is going to release her Mega Man Legends soundtrack reprisals at the end of May or early July, tentatively. During the meeting yesterday, she said that if her new soundtrack makes over 20,000 sales, Capcom Japan is likely to release the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version on the e-shop. Although there are no guarantees, keep in mind she is a well-networked individual."

There's two key words in there you need to keep in mind: no guarantees. The prospect of the prototype's revival is exciting, yes... but if the past has shown us anything, it's wise to keep your expectations in check.

Even so, it's good to hear Morishita's album is moving forward. All we can do now is simply hope for the best with reasonable expectations in mind. We'll keep an ear out for future developments.

For more details, check out this post.

Project X Zone Trailer Debuts

The much hyped Project X Zone trailer went live during tonight's Nintendo Direct stream. As anticipated, there's some (very) brief footage of X and Zero in action. Check it out:

The strategy RPG crossover is due out in Japan later this year. No word on an international release, I'm afraid. That decision rests with Namco Bandai, not Capcom. Keep those fingers crossed!

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Coming to iOS

Capcom announced today Marvel vs Capcom 2 is coming to iPhone and iPod Touch in North America and Europe. The app will feature all 56 characters from the original version including the Blue Bomber and his sister, plus Tron Bonne and the Servbots. If you don't mind virtual controls, this is probably good news.

The game is dropping kicking its way to the app store next week, April 25th. No word yet on the prospect of an iPad version, but I think it's safe to assume it's within the realm of possibility.

Tune in to Capcom Unity's Mega Man 4 Stream for Mega Prizes (Updated)

UPDATE: Show's about to go live; watch it here.

Just a friendly heads up: at 2pm PST tomorrow, Capcom Unity will host a live playthrough of Mega Man 4. Of course, what's a good stream without some sort of giveaway? The Unity crew will be giving out prizes throughout the show, such as GE Animation's ridiculously awesome plush Mega Buster!

Former Mega Man Legends 3 Devroom liaison GregaMan is spearheading the initiative... but is he up to the task? GregaMan openly admits Mega Man 4 might be a toughie, so be sure to hop aboard the live chat and help him out when the time comes.

For further details, check out this post at Capcom Unity.

Robot Master Field Guide Hits Stores Today!

After countless delays, UDON Entertainment is proud to officially confirm that the Mega Man Robot Master Field Guide is hitting comic book stores today, the 18th. In order to get you more excited, UDON's posted a small helping of preview pages for you to get a taste of the action. Check 'em out below.

Over at the UDON blog, you'll also find some commentary from the staff members behind the book. Did you know The Mega Man Network's own David Oxford (aka LBD "Nytetrayn") significantly contributed to the project? No? Well, head on down to the blog and read a few words about his experience.

As a spectator to the guide's development, it's great to finally see this thing come to fruition. A lot of hard work went into gathering the most accurate, up to date data. Hopefully it's everything you imagined... and then some.

Now we can get to work cheering on a Maverick Field Guide...

Project X Zone Site Opens With X and Zero Voice Samples

The official Project X Zone website went live earlier today. Content-wise... well, there still isn't too much to do. However, the "Entry Title" section contains some voice samples of the game's characters including X and Zero (get a load of that artwork!).

X and Zero are being voiced by Takahiro Sakurai and Ryotaro Okiayu, respectively. Sakurai provided the voice of X in Rockman X8, Command Mission and Maverick Hunter X. Okiayu has played Zero for well over fifteen years starting with Rockman X4. So, yeah; hurray veteran voice actors!

Really, not much else to say about PXZ right now. We're still waiting on that trailer, supposedly due out later this month. Fingers crossed for some nice X and Zero action!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

This Life-Size Servbot Could Use a Good Home

Do you fancy Mega Man Legends? Do you have a couple hundred dollars burning a whole in your pocket? Have I got a gem for you.

Yahoo Japan is playing host to an auction for a 1:1 scale Servbot -- a one of a kind figure never released publicly, but used in promotional gigs at Capcom (like this charming photo op here). The figure stands at a little over two feet tall, two facial expressions, and poseable arm and legs. Yes, arm.

As you've no doubt noticed, our little friend is missing an arm; a consequence of being abandoned some years ago. Couldn't be found nor replaced. There's some minor wear here and there, too, but it's easily reparable according to the seller. All in all, it's in pretty sturdy condition. Just don't ask it to do any heavy lifting.

Currently, the figure is running at 28,000 Yen (roughly $347 US). That does not include shipping. Nor include the proxy services needed to obtain it if you live outside of Japan. Nevertheless, if you've got the Zenny and the means to give this little guy a good home, you can check out the auction here.

Fan-Sewn Mega Man X Helmet Keeps Head Comfy, Awesome

We've seen a lot of homemade Mega Man helmet-hats here at the ol' corner, but, I mean, get a load of this business right here:

It was only a matter of time before someone set out to craft Mega Man X's "First Armor" helmet. And it looks cozy. My head feels warmer already! Grab yours at the GamePunkArts Etsy store. Just, uh, be careful not to smash any rocks with your head. That won't go over well.

Thanks for the tip, Jon!

Cover and Solicitation for Archie's Mega Man #16

It's that time again. A new cover and solicitation has arrived for Mega Man #16 from Archie Comics. It's the epic conclusion to the "Spiritus ex Machina" saga, meaning we'll have ourselves a brand new story arc in the very near future. Here's the solicitation:

“Spiritus ex Machina.’ The epic conclusion! The debate over the future of robotics reaches an explosive turning point, and with multiple lives hanging in the balance, the Robot Masters race against time to save their creators. Will one make the ultimate sacrifice to save their comrades? And will Dr. Lalinde’s tragic secret finally be revealed? Meanwhile, Dr. Wily welcomes the newest robot to his army – who is Break Man?”

Yes; Break Man. A personal favorite of mine, so you bet I'm excited to see how this one turns out.

In related Archie news, the cover for the third trade paperback has also been revealed, viewable here. Mega Man: The Return of Dr. Wily, compiles issue #9 to #12 in a single volume. According to Amazon, the book is due out August 28.

Rumor: Jazwares Retires Mega Man Line

Toy licensee Jazwares has a strange, on and off relationship with Mega Man. Ever since the early 2000's, they've actively produced a wealth of Mega Man figures, model kits, play sets, and the highly successful Retro Roto line. In the interim, they've cancelled a great number of products while quietly discontinuing others. Unfortunately, that trend might be poised to continue.

Spotted over at Jazware's official website, the recently revived Retro Roto line has been relegated to "retired" status. Meanwhile, the JUVI series has completely up and vanished from the site. Pending an official announcement from Jazwares themselves, it would appear the manufacturer is done with the Blue Bomber.

Considering Jazwares' track record with Mega Man, tonight's news shouldn't come as a huge surprise. In late 2010, the manufacturer announced they required the license from Capcom to produce new Mega Man (and Street Fighter) figures to release in 2011. Unfortunately, nothing came of it. In subsequent months, we began to hear rumors of Retro Roto Wave 2 finally coming to fruition... but nothing came of that either.

Perhaps this if for the best, you know? In recent years, we've seen some excellent high quality stuff from the likes of Bandai and Kotobukiya. Maybe Capcom have come to the realization Jazwares aren't the best ones suited to handle the IP. After so many failed promises, you've go to draw the line somewhere.

Neo Devroom: Vote for the Best Fan-Made Weapon Now!

My apologies for not getting on this sooner -- it's be one of those weeks. For those not in the know, The "100,000 Strong for Mega Man Legends 3" group has been holding a fan-made weapon design contest at the Neo Devroom in an effort to raise awareness for the movement. Participants submitted all sorts of concoctions, and this week we're down to the top ten designs. Now it's your turn to crown the victor.

Simply head on over to the voting page and cast your vote. Be sure to check out everyone's designs, top to bottom! Voting will until April 15, so there's not too much time left.

I'm digging a lot of these designs... the passion really shines through. The original Mega Man Legends 3 dev team, wherever they are, would no doubt be proud of your efforts.

First Screens and Artwork of Project X Zone

Following up on last night's reveal, Famitsu.com has uploaded a wealth of Project X Zone screenshots and artwork. Take a look below for Mega Man X and Zero in action:

Unseen Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version Footage Surfaces

100,000 Strong for Mega Man Legends 3 translated some nice Prototype Version gameplay, and I just wanted to give it a proper display here for those who might not have seen it.

Speculation says the footage was purposely withheld from the North American Devroom to "allegedly sabotage the project's awareness." I'm not convinced that's the case, but nevertheless here it is for your viewing pleasure (hit the 'CC' button for subtitles):

Generally, we've seen this stuff before... but it is sprinkled with some new stuff like can-kicking action!

Like what you see? Support the revitalization efforts and 'like' 100,000 Strong on Facebook.

Project X Zone Revealed; Mega Man X and Zero Confirmed

At last, Capcom's collaboration between Sega and Namco Bandai has been revealed in this week's Famitsu. As anticipated, the game is called Project X Zone (the 'X' is pronounced as "cross"). The game is a strategy RPG featuring characters from all three companies.

The good news for us? Mega Man X and Zero are in the game. According to the magazine, characters will team up in pairs for fight scenes. Naturally, X and Zero act as each other's partners. UPDATE: A scan of the dynamic duo in action has been revealed. The pair are shown duking it out with a Met in an area that strongly resembles Cyber Peacock's stage. Incidentally, the bottom right screen shows X and Zero performing attacks from X4 -- Twin Slasher and Raijingeki respectively.

The two Maverick Hunters will be joined by the following pairings:

Capcom
Ryu & Ken (Street Fighter Zero), X and Zero (Mega Man), Demitri and Dante (Darkstalkers and Devil May Cry), Chris and Jill (Resident Evil)

Sega
Shinguji Sakura and Ogami Ichiro (Sakura Wars), Pai and Akira (Virtua Fighter), Kurt and Riela (Valkyria Chronicles), Ulala and Touma (Space Channel 5 and Shining Force EXA)

Namco Bandai
Sanger Somvold (Super Robot Wars), Jin and Ling Xiaoyu (Tekken), Kos-Mos and T-elos (Xenosaga), Yuri and Estelle (Tales of Vesperia), Kite and Black Rose (.hack)

Famitsu also notes a trailer for PXZ will debut later this month. Exciting stuff. Stay tuned!

Capcom SVP Comments On Mega Man News

Much to the chagrin of fans, Capcom had nothing to show in regards to new Mega Man games at this year's Captivate press event. Granted, few Mega Man games have ever been announced at past Captivate conferences, so expectations were relatively rational from the get-go. However, many were hoping Capcom would use the event to finally detail their plans for the franchise's 25th anniversary.

Alas, nothing was said.

Following this morning's stream of announcements, Capcom Unity forum member Jimb0 sought assurance and asked when fans could expect some Mega Man news in light of the new fiscal year. Capcom’s Senior Vice-President of Planning and Business Development Christian Svensson quickly followed up with a response: "Likely to be a while still... these things take time."

Of course, this isn't too hard to believe. We already have been waiting quite a while, mind you. The good news is Capcom is trying to think of something to do with Mega Man, at the very least, though whether anything will pan out before December 17, 2012 remains to be seen.

In the meantime, all we can do is continue to wait and hope that something worthwhile comes to fruition.

Takeshi Aono, The Voice of Dr. Wily, Passes Away

Takeshi Aono, the Japanese voice actor who portrayed Dr. Wily in a number of Rockman games and related media, has died. He was 76.

Aono portrayed the diabolical doctor for well over fifteen years; his first performance dating all the way back to Rockman 8 in 1996. More recently, he reprised the role in 2010's Rockman 10 Image Soundtrack.

Beyond Wily, Aono provided the voice for a number of legendary anime characters including Space Battleship Yamato's Shiro Sanada and King Piccolo in Dragon Ball. He will be fondly remembered by Metal Gear Solid fans for his role as Colonel Roy Campbell.

I send my deepest condolences to Aono's family. He will be missed.

Unused SFXT Mega Man Designs Revealed

So, Street Fighter X Tekken has been out for a little while now. The dust has (mostly) settled on the presence of old man Mega. Ultimately, we can all agree he's a strange one. But what if I told you the both Mega Man and Roll could have ended up a lot stranger?

The above concept art comes from the Street Fighter X Tekken Artworks book, which details the the old guy's development process. A number of different styles were considered before Capcom settled on the design we all know and despise love. For example, the second from the top image pools design elements from the Mega Man Star Force series.

There's a lot more unused designs to be seen -- some crazy wild, others downright cool. You'll find them all at The Mega Man Network.

PlayStation Rockman Prototypes Re-Uploaded

With Megaupload dead and gone, we've lost access to our small collection of PlayStation Rockman prototypes. Fortunately, you need not fret. By popular demand, we've re-uploaded all files to a new server, courtesy of OKeijiDragon. You'll find the download links below.

If the files go down again, let me know. Otherwise, enjoy!

I think it's great we have the ability to play and research these treasures -- they're history, after all. I'm always on the lookout for new prototypes, so if something of interest pops up, I'll be sure to share it. Currently, I'm tracking an early X1 build. No clue what goodies it holds, but I'm hopeful it'll have (at the very least) remnants of the lost 'white city' stage. No promises... we'll see what happens.

Is 'Project X Zone' Capcom, Sega and Namco Bandai's Mystery Game?

Capcom's enigmatic collaboration between Sega and Namco Bandai continues to elude. When we last checked in with the project, a chromosome resembling Mega Man X popped up in Capcom's petri dish. Now, the petri dishes have been shattered; the chromosomes stolen. In their place, a countdown has surfaced, ending on Wednesday, April 11.

What's more, a curious trademark has been discovered from Namco Bandai: Project X Zone. Speculation says that's the name of our mystery game. One only need to look at the project's URL for confirmation: pxz.channel.or.jp. Well what do ya know... the 'pxz' is probably an acronym for Project X Zone!

Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out. More information about the game is expected to hit this coming week. Stay tuned!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Rockman EXE 4.5 Translation Project Announced

Splendid news, Battle Network fans....

A Rockman EXE 4.5: Real Operation English translation patch is coming your way! Professor 9 has officially lifted the veil on the project via the Rockman EXE Zone:

"Rockman EXE 4.5 Real Operation is the only Mega Man Battle Network on the GBA that's still off-limits to English players. There was already a pretty cool partial translation patch by Spikeman, but I wanted the whole game in English. So I set out to make a translation patch on my own. This is the result!

I decided to hold off on announcing the patch until all the menus and other important things were translated, seeing as they were things I could do on my own or with help from a few friends, but the story is an entirely different story."-- Prof. 9

Currently, the patch does not have a release date. It'll be finished when it's finished, so to speak. In the meantime, you can download a preliminary version with some translated text here. The prof has most of the technical and graphical details nailed down, but he could use a hand or two from fans willing to translate and sift through dialog strings. The more people involved, the faster we can pump the complete patch out.

Those interested can find the full projects details here. Patch progress updates will be regularly made on Prof. 9's Twitter account here. Look forward to it!

Olan Rogers Debuts Mega Man X Short Film

Months in the making, aspiring film-maker Olan Rogers has pulled the veil off of his Mega Man X inspired short film. It's one of three dream projects for Olan, made on a budget of no less than 700 dollars, tenacity, and pure fanboy passion.

In a word? Impressive. Feel free to drop Olan some feedback in the YouTube comments.

Looking Back at Yujin's Rockman DASH 2 Figures

Rockman Corner reader Undamned stopped by to provide us with an extensive look at Yujin's Rockman DASH 2 figures. Released way back in 2001, these Gashapons are highly regarded as some of the finest DASH figures around, even to this day. Check 'em out:

Undamned's channel also plays host to an in-depth look of the Rock Volnutt figure, viewable here.

I was eleven years old when I first assembled my Yujin Rock -- you wouldn't believe how many pieces I lost in the process. He's up on my shelf now... standing on one leg. I should probably remedy that one of these days.

Thanks, Undamned!

Amazon Lists Mega Man Trade Paperback Volume 4

Amazon has posted a pre-order listing for the fourth trade paperback compilation of Archie's Mega Man comic book series. Chronicling the complete "Spiritus Ex Machina" story arc (issues #13 through #16), this handy book will retail for $11.99, due out on December 26, 2012. The release is certainly a long ways away, but justified given the fact the arc hasn't begun circulation yet.

Amazon's product description is devoid of supplemental material. However, if tradition holds true, volume 4 will be accompanied by some sweet bonuses like exclusive sketches, cover variants and other goodies. Pre-order your copy here.

In the meantime, you can pick up volume 2, on sale wherever books and comics are sold. Volume 3 is due out later this summer, August 28.
