Rockman X DiVE's "Swimsuit Roll" to Receive a Design Change Next Week

"Swimsuit Roll" was a limited time Rockman X DiVE character, one that hasn't been seen since the Summer Carnival event on August 6th, 2020.

She was noticeably missing from the gacha banner released alongside the "Summer Vacation Lord of Snowy Plain" rerun on January 27, 2021. Said banner brought back Swimsuit Layer, Swimsuit Iris and Festive Zero as a bonus. However, Swimsuit Roll was missing.

Her absence wasn't addressed by the dev team before. Today, however, they shared a little about what the future holds for the character going forward. You can read their statement after the jump.

This morning, following the routine maintenance period, the dev team posted an article detailing all the new content coming today. One paragraph written in Taiwanese (and to a lesser extent, Japanese) surprised players with news that Swimsuit Roll would return... but she wouldn't be the same.

The official English description of said post in not available at this time. However, our good friend Sonny translated the relevant portion for us:

Optimization and adjustments:

1. Regarding Swimsuit Roll's 3D model and 2D artwork changes

Although the original design for Swimsuit Roll was based off the design from past, there will be changes in order to meet the requirements of age ratings on application platforms. We have decided to apply the changes after discussing with the "Rockman team" in Japan.

The concept of the new design will be Roll enjoying the sunshine on the beach and swimming pool. A blue skirt type swimsuit will be used to express her cuteness.

We hope players will like the brand new "Swimsuit Roll"

Character "Swimsuit Roll" 3D model and 2D artwork changes is scheduled on update 14 July 2021 15:59 (UTC+8).

Swimsuit Roll's original design drew criticism from fans. Much of the conversation coalesced around the character's age and attire.

How that influenced this change is hard to gauge but, we do know it was a decision made together with the Rockman team at Capcom Japan. She will return with a new "blue skirt type swimsuit."

The redesign will be available on Wednesday, July 14 which perhaps marks the beginning of the summer event in the game.

Stay tuned for more news!

    5. The fictional excuse. You guys really defending to your teeth the right to wank off to a character that looks like a 10 year old lol.
I'd ask you to go outside but your kind is better off not interacting with anyone in the real world.

    6. @el friki extremo you do realize that there is nothing inherently sexualized about her right? She's at the beach wearing a swimsuit. Its literally just a normal swimsuit. Which is exactly the point. You wanna talk about the real world? Ever been to the beach buddy? Its people like you who cry "sex" everytime they see something like pic related, are honestly beyond weird....

Fictional depiction of seuxal content still doesn't excuse INTENT.

I love Mega Man, but decisions to create swimsuit outfits for a child, and putting Roll in a literal bunny girl outfit in MegaMan power up makes it not surprising that someone who worked on Legends got arrest for child porn.

I ran out of room for the game, but lemme guess; her and/or the female characters are the only ones with swimsuits?

I feel bad for the original creator- for a number of stuff, but didn't he make this game literally for kids?

    9. @Anonymous December 27, 2023 at 4:37 PM
What intent? That if the characters were to spent some time at the beach they would have swimsuits? It's a cartoony whatif, nothing more. Better for you to stay away from any real beaches then.
What child? Apart from being fictional, it's a robot.
What's the source that someone that worked on Legends got arrested?

      Delete
    10. Ok, time to demystify and set the record straight.

The intent is to make money, that's it. Something like: "If we add more variants will players pay for it?". That always has been the main intent.
If some players are attracted to these variants then that's up to each individual player not the company. That attraction can be for any reason, for example: if someone finds them cute, if someone just likes how it looks, if someone wants to collect them, etc.
If players keep buying them then they'll continue to make similar variants and the company will try to understand which variants sell.
The swimsuit is innocent, period. Regardless if any government official or International Age Rating Coalition official or whoever made laws or guidelines against the use of said swimsuit just because the adult industry happens to use it or whatever they think about them, specially back then when the illustration it's based on released and absolutely nobody cared about it. By that same logic everything and I mean everything would be banned(school uniforms, food, everyday objects, etc.).
The same can be said for the bunny suit.
      "B-but bunnies are known fo-"
Let me stop you right there. That's only if you want to see it that way. The suit is no different than if it was a cat suit(which Roll does also have), a dog suit, a monkey suit, a wolf suit, etc.

Then you have projecting parasites that pretend that any of this is dangerous like:
      @el friki extremo and @Anonymous December 27, 2023 at 4:37 PM
Notice how the former straight up wrote something grotesque that most people would never think about without a care in the world. Want to know why? Because things like these project what they are guilty of, proceed to write things like these to save face and pretend they haven't totally exposed themselves in the process. If you think I'm wrong, look it up, but just to give an example: look up DrPizza a.k.a. Peter Bright the journalist. I pray that these things stay as far away from children as possible. 4:37PM anon whines about the female characters(pretending he cares about women or in this case fictional female characters) but no mention of Angepitoyeir and even if he did whine about it, it would still be pointless to do so.

The individual that was arrested was a Canadian actor and voice actor that worked for the English dub of Legends. Rob Smith, full name Robert Smith who voiced Teisel Bonne. Guilty of two charges in 2008 with additional charges in 2020. The way that 4:37PM anon worded it, made it sound like someone that worked in the making of Legends got arrested(like the Japanese development team). I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt(I really shouldn't) and write that he maybe expressed himself wrong or misremembered or(more likely) didn't give the full details to deceive readers.

I feel bad for the makers and fans that get lumped with these criminals and psychopaths.

  2. The way they describe things like "a blue skirt type swimsuit will be used to express her cuteness" combine with the idea that it's not them changing the "age" appropriateness of the design of their own volition but that of adhering to the standards of platforms' rating systems... Sounds kinda creeper... That may not be the intention but just saying to me it sounds kinda creeper...

Actually whenever I see people kinda focus in on classic Roll to a degree I can't help but feel a little Hideki Ishikawa in them or some other weird type stuff along those lines behind the scenes.

For Mega Man, he did some art and designing for the late 90s, early 2000s games. Think Mega Man 7 to Mega Man Legends 2. He also did a fun little doodle where he illustrated some random "alternate universe" characters like the chief and secretary from Megamix and "Madam Y" from the Archie comics.

Additionally, he did some guest art for Disgaea 3 and Infinite, some art for some trading card games such as Digimon Xros Wars.

  7. So… what? They're gonna slap Roll into a Victorian-era women's bathing suit? I mean, don't get me wrong… That would look super-cute on Roll – especially if she had big feet and Mary Janes, like her classic design. But, I mean… what "provocative poses"? Are they talking about her playful Battle & Chase artwork pose or something?

I don't get it. I really don't… People are overly sensitive. Argh.

    4. We live in an age where something gets censored because of a potential or possibility that it could lead to something illicit or undesirable. And it's only gonna get crazier.
That said, Capcom Taiwan should probably go ahead and toss a censor shadow on Roll's default costume because players could potentially see her underpants when she twirls or jumps. Heck, let's add one to all the female character wearing a dress with no leggings, like Alia in her White Day costume. Also, censor Tron Bonne's metal plate! It draws unwanted attention to her "undercarriage"!

… actually, what is the deal with that plate? I know it's part of her leotard that's under her pink dress and jacket, but uh… why does it need a metallic plate there? Hah.

      Delete
    5. See "anon1", the way i understand it, Layer gets a free pass since she looks like an older woman, even if it's too horny. Although twitter's special snowflakes are able to also """ask""" to change her design.

With Roll, despite being a cute outfit, it does give ppl the excuse to be nasty with her. Everytime i log in to the game, there's ALWAYS like 5 or 6 creeps wanting to do nasty stuffs to classic Roll. I'll give capcom the benefit of the doubt by saying that they are aware of that, and will change her design in order to not get into trouble.

They probably just want to play it safe.

      Delete
    6. Alia's a grown woman big difference between sexualizing her and the symbolic representation of a child like Roll(both are weird for Rockman just saying one is flat out worse).

I get that people love to "pretend" and be all shady about these things but they are not selling Roll swimsuits or whatever the heck they're called because of ... whatever the heck reason people come up with not related to at least bordering kink nonsense if we are truly being honest. Everything lines up, every female (whatever that means) robot in the series appearing in X dive has clearly been exploited in that way, I am not gonna sit here and pretend Roll is the exception to that especially knowing what I know about her general fanbase. Just saying also everything is contextual so no I do not think the leotard or whatever in and of itself is the thing that makes me come to this conclusion, on its own if say drawn by Keiji Inafune in a beach color spread along side Protoman and Rock in their trunks to celebrate the summer or something I'd say it was pretty innocuous. So yeah potential, intention and context is a thing especially given the fact that the slippery slope has been CONSISTENTLY proven correct the past decade.

    13. Okay. I have a confession. I'm… being stubborn and dumb on purpose because I don't want to address the actual "problem". So… let's rip that bandage right off.

The school swimsuit – or "sukumizu" – is a real thing worn by girls of school age in Japanese cultures even to this day. It's kind of a trope or staple in Japanese comics and cartoons too. And yes, boys have them, too, but swim trunks are hardly form-fitting.
In any case, there is a darker side that has been mentioned by others. The (female) school swimsuit, on top of being a cute bit of fashion and functional clothing, is also what's considered "fetish wear" in that it's often worn for photo shoots by adult models… and used for more "adult" things like "private cosplay", let's say.

In and of itself, there's nothing wrong with swimwear. Even if female swimwear is, generally speaking, made to be skin-tight so as to cut down on resistance against the water and, yes, accentuate the female form, there's nothing intrinsically wrong, there. The problem, as I understand it, is the fact that it's Roll wearing it.

There's a pretty hard movement going on in the 'States to where companies, websites, and the like are cracking down on exploitation and abuse of children. In particular, they seem to be focused on ridding the world of certain depictions of children in media of all kinds. It's very likely that this is the exact reason Roll's going to end up with a new, "less objectionable" swimsuit. All that said, though… I can't help but wonder if this would also be happening if Roll had her school uniform from Marvel vs. Capcom, or a maid or nurse outfit, or other "fetishized" clothing like that. (Kneesocks, anyone?)

      @Anonymous (July 8, 2021 at 10:08 AM), aka "Anon2"
Oh, don't get me wrong, Anon2. I'm not naïve or ignorant. Roll is a beloved character for her cute appearance and spunky personality, so if Capcom can get a few bucks out of the fan base by exploiting her image, why the heck not? There's no question in my mind that she was added to the game – and later, given a cute swimsuit – for that reason.

      @Iron Flail

  13. What's weird is 2 years and Dive it's still a thing being obsessed about. Time to move on to real MM titles that we all want, like actual canon main timeline sequels. I think I'm not the only one tired of the lack of real MM games. The 90s and 1st half of the 2000s were generous with MM content that actually continued the centuries/millenia long story of the main timeline universe. This needs to continue and also feel in all the story from classic to Legends, and they could easily fit in more sequel series between ZX and Legends. We need to keep that up. MM11 was one gain recently in this regard, but we need more, and the next game needs to never be out more than 2 years later. By now, we should have already gotten at least another main timeline sequel after MM11 since it has been almost 3 years since MM11. Time to move on from limited non-canon Dive already and on to real MM gameplay style based on the actual story MM11 /X8, ZX style, and even Legends style (as long as that gameplay is part of the already 3D Legends series). A MM series that starts in 2D should remain in 2D (I'm fine with 3D models and effects in the background (2.5D) though X8 style, but no 3D gameplay stages is best in the X series) and one that starts in 3D should remain in 3D (Legends for example should never be 2D). If MML was more popular, we might have a MML 10 by now. That would be a lot of content to play.

I wonder if the CEOs of Capcom know we want real MM main timeline continuations. They can't be that oblivious. Maybe protesting it outside of Capcom Japan would wake them up to that with signs saying 'continue the classic, X, ZX, and Legends series + make additional sequel series in the main timeline'.

All in all, the topic of how Roll is depicted was significant enough to warrant changes. It's not something the dev team (nor primary Rockman team) wanted to merely glaze over.

Second yeah layer needs to buy clothes that y'know cover things, and she needs to stop with the fake underboob thing (from layers default design), i mean at least Alia and Iris, while still wearing bikinis mind you, are making an attempt to cover up enough to not get banned on youtube.

(I almost said twitter at the end but then realized that twitter allows nsfw content, despite the complaining about sexualization, hmm, hhhmmmmmmm.)

Yeah, I have a YouTube channel. I showcase the models and also I'm one of the only ones who records the Japanese story for those who want to see the difference or are Japanese. I'm basically saving people from playing in this... errr... beautiful game.
I won't name the channel's title but you can try to find me myself if you want. My channel always has a profile pic of Axl and its title is quite similar to my nickname here.

By H game I meant a Japanese word that starts from h and ends on tai which can be translated as "perverted". H is just a shortening that gets used sometimes, look at one of the Kobuns (Servbots) in the Japanese version of The Misadventure of Tron Bonne, I'm not making this term up. That small dude was turned into a designer in localization and he likes to jump on Tron's bed a lot.

  18. Just so other commenters know, actual school swimsuits haven't been like that in decades, at this point it is considered "fetish wear", like playboy bunny or maid costumes. That's the reason it's considered controversial.

    1. Its still literally just a one piece outfit, nothing is sexual about it, unless you're saying all swimsuits are sexual.

      Delete
    2. Not all swimsuits are sexual but honestly most pretty much are.

In my opinion, I think back in the day (at least in the civilized west) people just put "sexual" wear on children because culturally it was generally accepted that barely no one thought or was thought to have thought of children that way at all, people assumed very young children outside of few rare examples did not possess sexual traits/attractiveness at all to older people, so it was generally accepted as innocent. Analogous to putting human clothes on a cat or dog, generally speaking no one thought of dogs and such as humans back then so it was just innocent fun. Well now after mountains of evidence from online/darkweb and other places, that CLEARLY isn't the case anymore and people culturally speaking have been exposed as sexual freaks nowadays many groups make that the central point of their entire existence even. I mean to carry that analogy from earlier further for example openly "proud" furries exist now in large numbers featured in prominent media open about their uh... fetishes let's just say.

I mean that's as far as I will go into it and specifics and all that jazz but my point is times are different, things people thought they knew about human nature as a general rule are clearly changing so outlooks to things change.

  20. You can't see it from the back at all, it's just a one-piece. I can't tell if the garment is covering her butt at all, from official artwork anyhow. I don't think it's provocative at all, it's a cute swimsuit. I did some basic research, to find that the type of swimsuit she wears is used for fanservice and fetishwear. I don't get it, but then again, anything can be fetishwear, so it must be a very strong association among an audience somewhere this game has released. I get why Capcom made NebulaJoy do this, but it's not going to affect anyone but hebephiles.

Based on the skirt comment from the developers, it seems like the bottoms are a problem, and I'm kind of questioning why they let her wear such short bottoms. I've seen children her age in bikinis, and they're still not remotely sexual, but from a public image perspective, it's questionable to put what is essentially a 10-year-old in a swimsuit that just about covers her crotch. The style of the top is nice, yet covers her up, my idea was mid-thigh to knee-length shorts with a tankini that looked like the torso portion of her current swimsuit.

I have no idea why Capcom was suddenly not okay with this design. They've been using it for a while, perhaps the Japanese and Anglosphere releases have something to do with this, and the style of swimsuit has different connotations in different regions.

Here ya go. In game, the top resembles the "new type" while the bottom resembles the sewn in bottoms of the "old old type".

      > […] then again, anything can be fetishwear […]

      Also from that same article:
      > They are also often seen in gravure idol photoshoots and other adult entertainment media, often carrying [an adult] connotation like the Japanese school uniform.
So… yeah. That just reinforces your statement, Navas. Hee hee.

      @Anonymous (July 9, 2021 at 12:09 AM)
"What is a 'hebephile'?" It's when a grown-up finds themselves attracted to a pre-teen or early teen, basically – and specifically pre/early teens. No older, no younger. That's how it differentiates itself from the more commonly "P" word.

    3. You can turn the 3d models around, Swimsuit Roll doesn't have a thong back, doesn't have her ass cheeks hanging out or anything like that, it's literally just a bland one piece swimsuit.

I doubt its a japan issue considering they've had the game for a while now and swimsuit roll could still be seen from the character select with her now "unacceptable" swimsuit that doesn't expose anything compared to layer, alia and iris. This is suddenly a problem now that the west gets it and the west complains about loli existing in anything even non-lewd situations just because artists will make nsfw art.

    1. Strangely enough, that search query did not trigger Google's "report child abuse in results" warning.

Anyhoo, the age of consent in Japan is 13. Which explains why Amy Rose – who is 14 years old – has rented two different apartments in the Sonic universe, one of which she even shared with Cream, an eight-year-old living away from her mother.

Incidentally, age of consent in Nigeria is, apparently, 11. So, I mean… "could be worse?"

    2. Oh, i was lead to believe it was 16, however that explains... a whole lot of stuff.

    3. 11? Man, that's just beyond disgusting. Why can't these sick weirdos let kids be kids and focus on actual adults to be sexualized instead? What is this perverted obsession with sexualizing prepubescent children? This needs to be done away with now.

    4. Just cause the age of consent is lower doesnt mean they are going to be creeps towards kids. Just saying.

  26. It is done. "Old" Swimsuit Roll is no more.

The only word that spring to mind, here, is "generic". It's still cute, yes, but it couldn't be much more generic. In fact, if you Google the term "generic girl's swimsuit", a very similar swimsuit to this comes up as, like, the fifth or second shopping result, depending on the page you're looking at.

    To me, that speaks volumes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So this swimsuit was banned because it was so tight that the adult industry used it in videos and magazines. There are also some sickos that payed for used swimsuits. Then again there are used underwear vending machines in Japan. Overall, it's just a swimsuit that was replaced by a bikini which is MORE exposed. Just like every time this happens no child was protected by applying these censorship. It's just a digital drawing. It's only a fictional character that looks nothing like the real thing but oh well.
