Minor Mega Man Universe Details From SDCC; "Oft-Requested" Mega Man Game Teased

Capcom's San Diego Comic-Con panel literally just came to an end, and as expected, Keiji Inafune was there to talk a little about the mysterious Mega Man Universe. Unfortunately, details were very, very slim as Capcom looks to continue keeping the game shrouded in mystery for the time being, but nevertheless, here's what we got:

  • According to Inafune, Mega Man Universe will be a game where players can play as their favorite Mega Man characters (including the macho, middle-aged Mega Man from the original game's NES boxart) or other Capcom characters. A primary goal for the title is to offer an experience where Mega Man fans can "unite", a possible implication that online multiplayer will play a key aspect.
  • Inafune then went on to say more details on the game are expected to arrive in the future. There was no gameplay shown, but Inafune assured the crowd he's determined to show us something soon. Concerning a release date, the game "won't be out for a while."
  • In closing, Inafune let loose that many more Mega Man announcements are coming this year, and confirmed that an "oft-requested thing that we all want" is coming to fruition. The crowd immediately began to shout for "Mega Man Legends 3",  to which Inafune replied with a swift "Thank You."

So, tonight's event kind of turned out to be a bust for big MMU news. However, Inafune's tease about forthcoming announcements has certainly piqued the interests of many, especially that "oft-requested" game tease. Could it finally be the much demanded Mega Man Legends 3? I certainly hope so!

Capcom will be holding another panel Saturday where another game is expected to be announced; perhaps we'll learn more about MMU there.

        2. Capcom is just riding the hype train to gravy town.

That made no sense. I apologize but you get the idea.

It's unfortunate they're being so secretive but it's not like other companies don't do it, so whatever.

        3. It was an awesome conference. Everyone was shouting for MML3 when inafune revealed the announcements.

        4. Favorite MegaMan characters?

Does that mean I can use Volnutt and SSR?

        5. Mega Man Legends 3, please.

If this is not it, I lose all faith in Cappy.

        6. …And the hype train crashes. :(

But thankfully, we get another train to come pick us up immediately afterwards! :D

Hm, it’s almost August. That’s usually the month when CoroCoro reveals new Network Timeline games. Under normal circumstances, I’d say that the Network Timeline is being skipped over this year… But there’s the 3DS to consider, and I’m betting that there's going to be a launch title for it.

Such a thing may not be oft-requested (at least here on the US side of the fanbase), but from the wording up there, I'm pretty sure MMU and the 'oft-requested' games are not all of the MM games currently being in development.

Then again, the 'oft-requested' game and a possibe 3DS launch title could be one and the same. I'm sure you Legends fans don't need me to elaborate on this.

TGS is in September this year, right?

        7. Bah, what a complete let down. They did everything they could to keep people in suspense, making it seem as if they were going to reveal TONS of new information, and yet we STILL know next to nothing about the game.

Sheesh, this is no different from what Capcom Unity did back in February, where they made it seem as if they were going to reveal Mega Man 10's third character, but instead, it was just about piece of artwork.

Anyway, though, about the "much requested" game that Inafune spoke of, it could only be one of these things:

          -Mega Man X9
          -Mega Man Legends 3
          -Mega Man: Powered Up 2
          -Maverick Hunter X2

But of course, at this point, it wouldn't surprise me in even the SLIGHTEST if it was neither of them, and it turns out to be that piece of crap Mega Man 2 rehash for the 3DS.

        8. I hate you Capcom, you big fat teasers with your teasing.

        9. @Krazy Monkey: See, now I'm hoping that it's Mega Man 2 3DS, just to see the look on your face.

        10. @TAG:

Okay, seriously. What's your problem? This has to be at least the tenth time you've lashed out at me, whenever I had something to say about that game. Does it really bother you THAT much, that I think Mega Man 2's overrated? Well, too bad. As with you and everyone else here, I'm entitled to an opinion. I'm allowed to be biased against Mega Man 2, in the exact same way that you're allowed to like it.

          ReplyDelete
        11. Hey it could be something even better than Legends 3 or X9....more Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X.

          ReplyDelete
        12. For the record, even though what I've said in the past might contradict this, I'm fine with the 8-bit games.

However, that's -ONLY- IF the development of such games is not at the expense of development for much higher priority games, such as Legends 3.

          ReplyDelete
        13. its sooo legends 3

          ReplyDelete
        14. @Krazy Monkey: Well, you do whine about it a lot. As evidenced by your own mention of "tenth time".

          ReplyDelete
        15. Well it's definitely MML3. Can't be a clearer hint.

They said they were gearing up for some cool Megaman stuff in interviews related with OSS, in which the producer of OSS said they were discussing what to do with EXE.

All around, I am one excited Megaman fan.

        16. Please let MML3 be on Wii.

Since I haven't seen anything of MMU yet I don't mind that it's not on Wii.

But MML3 has to be! Pleeeease!

          ReplyDelete
        17. Krazy Monkey: The fact that you continuously bring up your dislike of Mega Man 2 (including in places that don't even mention Mega Man 2, such as this one) totally has nothing to do with it.

In all seriousness, Mega Man Legends 3 does seem to be the most likely candidate to be announced. I personally am not much of a fan of Legends 3, but seeing how many people really want it, I am hoping for it.

          ReplyDelete
        18. Wow, mixed reaction. I'm disappointed that almost nothing was revealed today. I'm curious as to what Inafune was referring to. I'm frustrated from having to wait even longer to find out about MMU.

Anyways, when he said he would be "uniting" all the fans together, he could be talking about some form of online, be it stage creations, co-op multiplayer, etc.

Now to wait and see what Ono was teasing. I can't imagine an NvC/CvN in the works because they should be focusing on MvC3 right now.

        19. @Anonymous #7:

Maybe so, but I still have the right to express my opinion if I wish, regardless of how negative it may be. I definitely stand by my positition, a hundred percent, that Mega Man 2 is overrated. I'll never be able to understand WHY that game gets so much attention over all of the others, anyway. The game is just NOT that great. In addition to having a broken weakness cycle, where nearly EVERY Robot Master is weak against the same weapon, it has some of THE worst level designs the series.

I used to like Mega Man 2 a lot when I first got into the series, but now it's gotten to the point where the fanbase, as well as Inafune and the rest of the staff at Capcom/Inti Creates, have almost killed any remaining fondness I've had for that game over the years. Especially when I read this Mega Man 9 interview from 2008:

          http://www.gamesradar.com/wii/mega-man-9-wiiware/preview/mega-man-9-exclusive-reveal/a-20080702154756565049/g-20080626165055938021

The impression that I got from this interview, is that their main focus was to please Mega Man 2 fanboys, even if that meant having to cast aside things that have been established in the series for the past ten years or so. Especially when Inafune made that ridiculous claim of the charge beam and slide kick being "unnecessary", simply because they weren't in Mega Man 2. I literally blew a FUSE as soon as I saw that. What's worse, is that they did not come up with a real story-related explanation as to why Mega Man couldn't use those abitilities. Just just flat-oout acted as if he's never had them in the first place. To me, that interview in a nutshell was, "If it wasn't in Mega Man 2, then it never existed."

THAT'S one of the reasons why I've began to hold such contempt for Mega Man 2 over the past couple of years. Because of all the unneeded attention that it gets, where they blatantly ignore what the other games brought to the series.

          ...

Anyway, though, to stay on topic... I doubt that any of the four games I listed are going to be announced, but I'm still hoping they will be, anyway. Yes, even Mega Man Legends 3.

Oh, but there's no denying the fact that you've STILL done it, even in certain articles that were ABOUT Mega Man 2. I'm talking about hte 3DS ones, in particular.

          ReplyDelete
        21. I hope it's X9, MML3 and MHX2 at once. Remember the days when a bunch of MegaMan games were released at once? MHX2 with PS3 X9 connectivity for extra features! And MML3 well...because it should have been their top priority over 5 years ago. Needless to say, the suspense is getting me very hopeful and excited. =)

          ReplyDelete
        22. @Krazy Monkey: Yes, that is true. But here's the thing. There's a difference between "Mega Man 2 sucks" and "Mega Man 2 sucks Mega Man 2 sucks Mega Man 2 sucks Mega Man 2 sucks Mega Man 2 sucks etc. etc."

          ReplyDelete
        23. I didn't say that it sucks, I said that it's overrated. There's a big difference. If I truly hated Mega Man 2, then I would NOT be looking forward to seeing a Powered Up sequel.

Either way, though, I still see nothing wrong with mention that 3DS rehash, though. This news post was to speculate on what the "oft-requested" game might be, and that could very well be it. I'm just strictly stating that I'm going to be disappointed if THAT'S what it turns out to be.

          ReplyDelete
        24. Wow, KrazyMonkey, why does it matter so much? You can have an opinion, but we've heard it. You expect us to not get tired of it the 40th time?

Look, you've just explained it all again.

          Get over MM2.

          ReplyDelete
        25. Well, you get my point. It's okay to say that you think it's overrated. Trying to bring it up whenever you get the chance makes it ridiculously annoying. Such as....y'know.....
Anonymous #7: Don't you think you whine about it too much?
Krazy Monkey: Yeah, but that's because it is overrated. And now let me go in detail as to why I think it's overrated.

          ReplyDelete
        26. If anything, I really hope it's MM Legends 3. But let's face it, it's probably not coming out for a HD console. As much as it's a requested game, I don't think Capcom would take the risk. If anything, it's coming to the Wii, or even better, the 3DS.

          ReplyDelete
        27. The only problem I have with this new game is the 360/PS3 exclusivity

I'm pretty sure that Rockman 9 and 10 was more lucrative on Wii but capcom wants HD graphic...I understand but as for me, I will not buy those machines + a HD tv just for that game...

Still waiting for Dash 3 on 3DS...

          ReplyDelete
        28. @TAG:

Alright, fine. I see your point. In the future, I'll only talk about it whenever it's necessary.

          ReplyDelete
        29. I'd be crushed if Legends 3 ended up on the 3DS. I'd be fine if the 5 Island game ended up on 3DS, but seriously Capcom... Legends is my favorite series of all time... do it properly on PS3 or Xbox in HD PLEASE!!!

          ReplyDelete
        30. +1 to you for your even-keeled reply, Krazy Monkey.

          ReplyDelete
        31. I am not a big Legends fan so i hope it is one of these.

          -Mega Man X9
          -Mega Man: Powered Up 2
          -Maverick Hunter X2

          ReplyDelete
        32. How does Megaman Legends 3 qualify as an "oft-requested thing that we all want"?

That's a grave generalization since they haven't even perfected the first one yet. Capcom should re-release a collection for the Wii with fixed controls and updated graphics. I liked Legends okay, not so much the sequel and I didn't bother with Tron Bonne.

But if they overhauled them and released a collection on the Wii, I'd definitely buy it. I think they should expand the Legends franchise's relevance beyond fighting game cameos before moving on to a sequel.

Legends fans are like puffer fish, they make the fanbase look more numerous than it actually is by being the most vocal.

        34. Man, I don't care what you nay-sayers say. Mega Man Universe looks like it's gonna be a blast! I mean...you can play as "Macho 80's Mega Man". What's not to love about that?

Incidentally...I'll have a fangasm if they include Springman and Doc Robot K-176 in the character lineup. Even if they're downloadable content or something like that!

          ReplyDelete
        35. @Professor Megaman: Wha? They have to remake and perfect one game before they can make a better sequel to it? That makes no sense. We'd never have sequels.
