Despite Fan Efforts, Mega Man Legends 3 Still Cancelled

Kotaku's promised coverage of Get Me Off the Moon has finally come to fruition, unfortunately double-billed with bad news. Despite being aware of the many efforts to reinstate Mega Man Legends 3 spearheaded by fans, there are still no plans to resume the title's development...

"We are aware of the fan created Facebook page requesting that we resume development of Mega Man Legends 3," Capcom spokesman Brian Keltner told Kotaku Monday afternoon. "While Capcom has a built a strong relationship with its community and values their feedback, Mega Man Legends 3 development has officially ceased without plans to resume development."

It's good to know Capcom is watching our every move, but I still can't help but feel bummed. Even so, I'll continue to push on, using tonight's comment as fodder to my motivation. I hope you feel the same as well, and will continue to support this effort through thick and thin. (EDIT: In actuality, this comment is no different that that from two weeks ago; Sven, himself, even admitted that.) Plans change. Not everything stays canceled. I believe Heat Man summed it up best:

"All in all, this should just give you cause to fight even harder. Everyone needs to realize that this movement wouldn’t succeed overnight. We’re very well going to have to rally this game for months, maybe years to come, and I know it can be terribly difficult to keep up momentum and motivation for such a long time. The moment motivation breaks is when Legends 3 is truly lost. And even if Capcom were to turn around on their decision tomorrow, it would still take time to reorganize the staff and resources to pick things up again (at this point the staff have certainly been assigned other projects). Patience is a most needed virtue. "

The ball is in your court. Do you lay down and accept this? Or will you continue to rally in favor of Mega Man Legends 3?

  1. You're still going on with this despite them flat out saying it won't accomplish jack? I'm sorry you're just in denial.

  2. Initially, I had some wishful thinking that Capcom might flip their decision and start up development again after the backlash. But cancellation decisions are not made so lightly.

For me, I'm going to continue promoting Mega Man Legends 3 as my top wanted game. Hopefully, after some of their other projects are released, they'll be able to consider starting up on it again.

  3. I don't think there was ever any real hope of bringing back Legends 3 ... or at least this version of it. Maybe if people make a big enough stink they'll let that other guy have a go at it.

  4. I want to take solace in the fact that this is coming from a NA spokesman and not from a director at the home office, but it's still a serious gut punch.

  5. Capcom has lost all of my respect, I'm done with them. I will still push for MML3, though. In the remote chance they do change their minds, they'll earn some of my respect back... but they're going to have to earn the rest of it.

If their idea was to pretend to cancel it as a publicity stunt and then bring it back after the fans got pissed off, to look like heroes for listening, then that time has passed. If they were going to do that, they've made the error of alienating much larger portions of their fans now. I don't know how they expect to get past this.

  9. This is dumb in every sense, especially marketing. They cant make any plans for one of the most wanted games for the past decade? This is going to, excuse my language, but fucking rape any chances they had at gaining any companies trust again. You dont have plans? Well then make some, or else you'll be losing at LEAST 50% of your total income. None of us give less a shit about how 'aware' you are about the community, we dont want that BS. We want you to care, and to listen. There is literally no justification for canceling legends 3. Not enough money? Get a loan. Or, better, yet, ask the fans that love you so. god damned MUCH. Not enough inspiration? Devroom for that. Working on a different game title? We can wait.

However announcing this as a 'we have no plans' cancel is literally the worst thing any gaming company can do. It kills off series, or they get a sequel years and years later, after everyones forgotten about it. Yet. Yet yet yet yet YET. Doing this. Is literally. Comparable to Nintendo canceling Mario 3, and therefore never finishing up the Mario series. No one likes it, and this outcome is not needed, yet the only logical answer I can see is that this decision was FORCED upon Capcom. Capcom, You have nothing to lose now. You've gone all in, and lost, with but the dealers petty one-chip to make a comeback. Tell us what happened. If we could think any less of you, we would hire a hitman. But I, for one, still care for Capcom. I am extremely pissed, but I am willing to forgive if Capcom tells us this answer we all want.

    Why.

  10. Why should anyone bother to continue when they flat-out stated they won't uncancel it? There's nothing we can do. We lost.

  11. Wow, didn't expect so much negativity.

I was hoping this stink would last, but you wimps have already given up.

This statement is no different from what we already heard. If we give up now, this was all a waste.

  14. General Fanbase: Capcom didn't make my game so I'm never buying another product ever from them even though they've stated Legends 3 wouldn't make them money and they didn't like where it was going, but I want them to put it out anyway even though sales will suck and it may be a crappy game I'm going to complain about anyway! D: D: BAWWWW!

Greaaat way to show support guys. Real classy and mature. I suppose I'll just go cry now that ZX3 isn't being made and listen to you complain it's not the game YOU want?

  17. @ last Anon:

Not just " a game we wanted"

Its a game that weve been patiently waiting for over a decade for. in case you dont know how long that is, let me enlighten you. well around 10 years. Then they go ahead, have it announced as this project that the fans are going to be involved in, and go about involving the fanbase on down to the very last detail, hyping this shit nup like it were the second coming of christ. "Legends 3!, legends 3! Mega Man wioll finally get off the moon! Here's a rocket progress chart!"

The hype train is at full steam, and they announced that the prototype would gauge interest. it would test to see if it got approved or canceled. Then, the prototype is witheld, and some time later, "OH, NOPE, WEVE CANCELED IT EVEN THOUGH WE PROMISED THE PROTOTYPE WOULD DECIDE THAT. OH BY THE WAY, THAT PROTOTYPE THAT WAS PRETTY MUCH DONE AND HAD SO MUCH WORK AND PASSION PUT INTO IT BY YOU THE FANS AND THE DEV TEAM? YEAH, YOU AREN'T GETTING THAT EITHER. OH BUT WAIT! HERE'S STREET FIGHTER 4 TURBO HYPER LIMITED SUPER DUPER OVER 9000TH RE-RELEASE THE ARCADE EDITION!! OH AND HERE'S A CHARACTER EXPANSION PACK FOR MVC3, CONVENIENTLY PACKAGED IN A BRAND NEW GAME FOR YOU TO BUY AGAIN! SURELY THAT SHOULD MAKE UP FOR IT RIGHT? HUH? A "MEGA MAN" FOR MVC3..? OH NO SORRY. HE JUST DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT. AFTER ALL, HE WAS ONLY NUMBER 1 IN THE POLLS! HOW COULD HE POSSIBLY MAKE THE CUT? HERE. HAVE FIREBRAND INSTEAD!"

They made the moronic move of using the Devroom numbers to gauge interest. They viewed the numbers from the devroom as the number of units they would sell, WHEN THE DEVROOM INTRODUCTION VIDEO SPECIFICALLY SAID YOU COULD JUST "HANG BACK AND WATCH" WITHOUT ACTUALLY JOINING. And instead, they item that woulf have ACTUALLY gauged popularity, isnt being released.

GENIUS. ABSOLUTELY GENIUS. STAY SHARP, CAPPY. STAY SHARP.

  19. To those saying give up: Keltner is a PR person for the English speaking branch of Capcom. He is not an executive and he is not on a development team. He doesn't even work directly for the home office.

Giving up now tells Capcom this game has no dedication. Pushing forward says this is a worthwhile investment. The best things in life are those worth fighting for, so I say we don't stop fighting until we've accomplished our goals.

    ReplyDelete
  20. "While Capcom has a built a strong relationship with its community"

I guess Capcom missed the part where they destroyed that relationship when they cancelled Legends.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anybody who says to give up is just part of the problem. The Prototype was ready and promised. At least fight for THAT before resigning without any struggle at all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh hey, this place needs my insight.

I already said this: Capcom can't be trusted. They lost all my trust towards them. They lost their touch, and now all they want are cash cows. Capcom is not the same company it was 15 years ago, so fuck them.

We're never getting Legends 3, because they've always seen the series as a fluke. And they see it like that because all they care about is profit gain and milking.

    >whatevergame from whateverfranchise becomes a hit, because it's a fun game
    >Capcom capitalizes on it by releasing updated, multiple versions of the same game as separate games.
    >They keep doing the same, until it proves unprofitable (too much milking).
    >whateverfranchise put the franchise into sleep mode for x number of years.

Only Satan himself could've come up with such a bullshit, poorly thought marketing strategy. If you keep profiting off the same gameplay without any development refreshment, the franchise will become stale, and it will be doomed to become a cold seller, no matter how fun or innovative or hip the franchise concept is.

RM has proven to be a refreshable franchise, not only because of the creative mind of it's in-house developers, but because the RM franchise isn't really just about "robot beats evil scientist", but "good guy beats bad guy". Such a simple premise can be adapted to any kind of gameplay, with any kind of characters.

If you want to keep going, fine. I don't just want L3:

I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE WHAT CAPCOM HAS BECOME!.

  24. Don't let this stop. Join all the fan campaigns, sign the petitions, join the devroom etc etc. If you know a second language spread word to other non-english sites.

The point being, as long as we show there IS support for Megaman, Capcom will STILL be motivated to re-release the older games(Classic,X,Legends,BN), and will still be motivated to release new games.

But what Megaman needs now is X. He has the darker story that the gaming industry is digging right now, and he's obviously the Megaman iteration the MvC3 fans wanted. Push for X, push for nostalgia again that has more than 8-bit to get good sales. X is the saviour we need right now, and by supporting only Legends 3, but not X, we are sending a mixed message.

The Megaman franchise is divided because of the iterations, because of the different genres, tone of the story and detail. Yet, despite all that, we rallied together in the MvC3 polls and said 'We, the Megaman community, despite having no X games recently and having Legends 3 being made with Megaman Volnutt, want Megaman X, the second Megaman iteration, to be our Megaman rep.' Japan also felt that way.

X is the future. The fact Rockman Online still exists despite the cancellations of Universe and Legends signifies this. Rally to X. Rally to Megaman's sole hope, his sole saviour.

What a bunch of hypocrites. I'm probably echoing what many other people have been saying since last month, but I've lost pretty much any remaining respect I might have had left for this company. It pains me to say this, but as of right now, they're dead to me.

X is the franchise's sole saviour?

Please, refrain from commenting your bullshitty fanboy crap. Rockman Online's ephemeral activity is partially existent because it's not being developed by Capcom or by any of it's in-house developers. Also, it won't be available for the western audience, because the Mega Man franchise sucks balls on this side of the pond, or so we've been told. It brims with MMO averageness, and it'll probably make Capcom some money out of ingame microtransactions. It's a safe win for Capcom to keep it an eastern exclusive, because it appeals to an eastern gaming public.

Also, it's activity is EPHEMERAL. Just like some months ago with *le gasp* MegaMan Universe!. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets da boot like the rest of this year's RM games. Nor disappointed.

    Wanna know why?

Because I believe the fans can make an even better game.

RM doesn't need any 3D, super detailed crap. RM doesn't need flashy anime/realistic gore cutscenes, or spiffy and glowy special effects, or awesumsauceum glorious orchesta hits filling our ears, or superbly professional voice acting. MMX1 didn't have any of that, and it's still better than most platformers ever made. Sure, they're cool details and all, but what I crave for is A FUN GAMEPLAY. You know, that shit that makes a game not just an interactive movie.

If we're lucky (or unlucky) enough, in a few years, RM will probably get a reboot a-la DmC or some dark, slick, western-appealing comic book shit like what MMU pussy-tried to do. And I mean using Classic's story as a base (X's is not dark, it's just more action-minded and complicated, like the rest). You know, Light's sad story of replacing his lost sons with robotic doppelgangers that can't feel what love is, and struggles to teach them so. Rock facing robotic puberty or faulty AI programming issues that cause him teen angst or some shit like that. Bass working for Wily as a emotion-less soldier, while Roll has a crush on him. And Blues being a hardass and a dick to everyone, just to get brainwashed by Wily and shot to death by Rock in the game's final battle, with oil spewing out of their bodies as they take damage and losing their fake skin with every hit. All in 3D, HD, Blu-ray holyness, with an orchesta score, DLC chapters, and an online mode passed off as a brand-new, "balanced" director's cut.

Wether the game ends up being mediocre or not, it won't matter (still, if they end up pulling that one off very well, I might end up liking it). You guys will complain, and be advised to not give a fuck. And in the end, you will not give a fuck. You will accept the fact that the Rockman we know and love is a thing of the past, and that we are the rightful guardians of what made it special.

I'll say it once again: I'd rather see the franchise dead and left intact, than to see a Mega Man: Act Zero come to fruition. I'd rather see MM9-3 than that.

Also, this isn't just about L3. Capcom has been doing some pretty bad choices lately. The Rockman fandom isn't the only Capcom fandom that is pissed off at them.

Seriously spend your time better. I like MML as much as the next MM fan, but the time has come to move on. The game isn't happening. Best thing you can do now is to boycott Capcom, THAT is the only way to show them they have failed as a business. DON'T BUY A GODDAMED THING FROM THEM.

Just look at the guys over at MMX9.com, they sure showed capcom they wanted X9, and it only took them 4+ years! What a wait but X9 finally is out! WHAT! X9 hasn't even been announced yet?!? You can see where I'm going with this.

  44. @MusashiAA: Fans might be able to make a better game, but your forgetting one thing.

Capcom owns the rights to Megaman. They can come down upon any fangame with the almighty hammer of ownership and get them all shut down.

And I will point out Sega shut down a Streets of Rage fangame within at least a year ago. Despite that series NOT having new entries.

So I wouldn't go championing your fan games. Capcom can deny it with just the press of a couple buttons. Hell they've even acknowledged the existence of SEVERAL BN fangames(by that, a message to those making it). If you claim it to be BN7, SF4, MM10, X9, Zero 5, ZX3, or even Legends 3, they WILL enforce their ownership. They've already threatened to do so on some fangames claiming to have those names.

Capcom may not make any more games, but they can still say, 'If we aren't making any, then you shan't make it.'

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well now the way I see it, the fans deserved this game. Capcom also NEEDED a new Mega Man game. The Devroom concept was a privilege to fans and ironically it turned against them. I've seen the sales number. No Mega Man game, even ZX, sold at all close to the Dev Room numbers or the amount of facebook followers. The fact is, these numbers fans have rallied would be the bare MINIMUM in sales. Even Star Force didn't sell hundreds of thousands of copies through hundreds of thousands of community members actively helping out.

tl;dr, this devroom thing would have required an impossible amount of commitment that really would have only shown its effect had the game actually been sold. Members does not equal sales. Sales will ALWAYS be higher.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well, let them do as they wish.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well, Mega Man 9 happened, followed by MM10. And development of Mega Man Legends 3 started. Many people wanted it, specially because of its cliffhanger ending. But WHY was it cancelled? It doesn't make any sense. What is Capcom hiding?

If something is wrong with the game, can't they delay it to fix/improve? We already waited over 10 years, so 1-50 extra months would be much better than stopping it. The prototype was ready to be released, and it was delayed for improvement, but why they didn't release it?

I want them to give the series its sequel. Capcom owns Mega Man, they can do it if they want, if they don't release it there are no excuses other than "we don't care", specially when they are so vague about its cancellation and Mega Man Universe's. It doesn't need to be the last game, being the definitive ending for the series, but it could end like MML1 and the other Mega Man games.

You can't make everyone happy, that's why there are several genres like action, sports, RPG, fighting, adventure, misc... This game would make over 10000 people happy.
But Capcom showed they know how to make many people unhappy.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I believe we have to push the Legends3.com campaign forward. Even if Capcom never revives MML3, as i think that is not the worst that could happen. The worst scenario would be the franchise falling to oblivion, much like Ghosts and Goblins or Final Fight.

This is a historic moment for a gamer community such as the MM fanbase, to express itself and defend their rights as consumers of a product they helped to develop.

    ReplyDelete
  61. What most annoys me is that Capcom doesn't explain why it was cancelled, just "cancelled" and done, only giving a vague "it didn't meet certain (unknown) criteria" crap. Come on Capcom, speak with us! Wasn't Mega Man Legends 3 supposed to be made by both staff and fans? How we will know how to revive it if you don't explain the reason to us? Or was it all a bad taste joke? What about the prototype? You guys didn't even given it a try!

    ...

  64. Dear Capcom.

We're fed up and we've had enough of your anti-Mega Man propaganda.

As a disappointment Mega Man fan, things have gone down Even though, I'm not a fan of the series, Mega Man Legends 3 cancellation has surely set off a wave of protests including campaigns to resume Mega Man Legends 3 production which you still refuse to do.

I'm also starting to agree with a lot of people regarding the controversies surrounding Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3(especially with Mega Man not being in the game). Also, I am really upset that whoever's creating the game decided to tick us off by not adding him to the roster when most of the new characters are CRAP (even though Hawkeye, Ghost Rider, Nova and Frank West look interesting...). You're just doing the same crap you did with Super Street Fighter IV by just releasing it on a separate disc instead of DLC although you did release the Arcade Edition of the game via DLC.

Capcom, if you're reading this, you might want to keep trying that method of releasing upgrades of games via DLC a lot more.

Another reason I'm upset is that I bought the special edition of MvC3 for $80 which I cannot sell now (which I'm still trying to figure out how to sell the Special Edition) and adding $40 of a UMvC3 purchase with upgrades that should've been done in the regular game is asking for too much.

As of this writing, I am officially boycotting Capcom until these conditions are met:

    1) Mega Man is added to the Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 roster no matter what. He didn't deserve the boot!!
    2) Mega Man legends 3 production is resumed no matter what. Finish the game fans have been waiting for!!
    3) Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 is released as a DLC product with cheaper pricing and better characters just like the Arcade Edition of Super Street Fighter 4 was released via DLC for $17. As for the better characters, maybe Black Widow, Venom, Thanos, Loki, Silver Surfer and Apocalypse from the Marvel side (keep Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Doctor Strange & Nova. They're cool and interesting characters.) and ditch all of the newer Capcom characters except Frank West, Strider Hiryu and Phoenix Wright ( they're important and popular characters and I'll respect your decisions for putting them in there) and put in better Capcom characters such as MEGA MAN X, Hayato from Star Gladiator, Juri from Super Street Fighter IV, Bionic Commando, characters from Dino Crisis, and other Capcom games that nobody remembers (or will remember once they are seen in action).

If none of those conditions are met, I will never buy another game from Capcom ever again, including Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3. And I think other gamers shouldn't either.

Please, PLEASE reconsider your actions before its too late.
