Mega Man 2 Demonstrated On Nintendo 3DS

Quite possibly the biggest piece of news at E3 was the unveiling of the Nintendo 3DS. The system's announcement included a bevy of new titles from both first and third parties. Lots of tech demos showing off the device's capabilities were out to play on the showroom floor, too, including a '3D enhanced' Mega Man 2.  An eye witness account of the demo from IGN below:

"One of the more surprising of the tech demos was something called "Classic Games." In this interactive but nonplayable demo, you could cycle through 18 different pixel-perfect NES and Super NES games and see them reprocessed in 3D. Basically, all the sprites and backgrounds have been pulled forward or pushed backwards to provide the appropriate illusion of depth using the stereoscopic LCD of the system.

"The list of games in this collection included Mario Bros., Tennis, Super Mario Bros. The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Musasame, Punch-Out!!, Excitebike, NES Open Golf, Twin Bee, Super Mario World, Kirby's Adventure, Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Urban Champ, Kid Icarus, Yoshi's Island, and Smash Ping Pong."

No footage of the demo exists at this time, but it shouldn't be too hard to imagine what Mega Man 2 in 3D would look like. Bear in mind, this is by no means a Mega Man game for the 3DS nor a confirmation of one; merely a technical demonstration.

  1. Man, the 3DS looks like it's going to dominate. So much (surprising) 3rd party support. Potential is huge.

Nintendo even somehow managed to get Street Fighter and Metal Gear Solid on board... Anything may as well be possible now.

  2. That's pretty cool, but I'm still more excited to play Megaman 2.5D

  3. Sounds a little lame and a little neat - if/when I end up with the 3DS, I would certainly give 3D MM2 a try.

  4. I hope they can bring Megaman Powered Up remake and into series that cannot made for PSP. The same for Megaman X Maverick Hunter series to 3DS. It will be great!

  5. That's pretty cool they're thinking about that. I hope to see them bring that about, it'd definitely breath new life into these games.

  6. Ugh. Once again, Mega Man 2 gets WAY more recognition than it deserves. <_<

  8. Star Force 4!!!!!!!

  9. There isn't a Star Force 4 at the show, anon. There isn't going to be a SF4 b/c the series came to a definitive end.

  10. the MM2 was not a demo or anything, like the other NES games... it was just a showcase to show how the 3D function works. there is nothing else about it. no new games of megaman for now. also, Keiji inafune said in a interview with Satoru Iwata that his plans on the 3DS are of making a Resident Evil for it, which has been confirmed already. Sorry for the bad news, but it's gonna take a long time till we see the blue bomber on the 3DS.

  11. @SSx9: Uh, yea we know it wasn't a demo. Did you not read the post?

  12. An NES game being simply SHOWN is now the "biggest news"?

    ....

Um... Alright, let's go hook up our NES to TVs at E3. People will go nuts and think we're unvealing new games.

  13. Yeah, it's safe to say that Nintendo won this E3 and anyone who says otherwise has got some SERIOUS explaining to do, regardless of how much they hate Nintendo.

@Krazy Monkey: Using a popular game as an example =/= giving it more recognition than it deserves.

  14. Always classic now...it's boring. I want a new EXE, it's not finish for me! =(

  15. @Anon Same as how there won't be an X, ZX, or Zero game either. They all came to a definitive end.

  16. @Anon: MM2 being SHOWN is not the biggest news; the 3DS itself is the biggest piece of news. :/

  18. 3DS was probably the best thing shown yet.

BTW Protodude, are you going to put up a link to a livestream of Capcom's conference if there is one?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would, but unfortunatly, Capcom isn't holding a conference...to my knowledge.

According to some sources, they've showed off everything there was to show. No Mega Man.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So, Protodude, you mean to tell us that nothing they showed over there was Mega Man-related, even though you and the maintainer of The Mega Man Network were invited?

  21. @Krazy Monkey:

Nada...unless there was something shown behind closed doors, which isn't all too uncommon. If something were shown to a select group at E3, my bet is that you'll hear about it from TMMN first (as they attended the show). That is, IF they showed something. I don't know.

  22. I feel that they wont make a new Mega Man exclusively for the 3DS instead just release old Mega Man and other Capcom games on the 3DS...
But I must admit the 3DS has some nice graphics..
They may make a SF4 AND THEY HAVENT YET CONFIRMED THAT THE SF SERIES IS OVER.If they do they may not release it for the 3DS since the 3DS is brand new and still has a DS Card port.

We may have to wait about 2 years til they release a new Mega Man series for the 3DS. They waited 2 years before releasing SF for the DS...Since SF is 3D in Gameplay. They can always release SF games for the 3DS.
They never released a New Mega Man series for the GameCube and Wii.

  23. I prefer Mega Man Powered Up 2, unless it has the extras from Rockman Complete Works.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ...That was it?

Maybe Capcom just offered to send you out of support for the company in general, not just Megaman.
