Mega Man 11 Tops 1.60 Million Units; Now Best Selling Game in the Franchise

A few months ago we celebrated the Mega Man franchise achieving 38 million units sold. And today we've got another milestone!

Capcom has announced that, as of September 30, 2022, Mega Man 11 has become the best selling game in the franchise with 1.60 million units sold across all platforms. It's finally dethroned Mega Man 2 as the best selling title.

Mega Man 2 was originally released back in 1988. It's taken almost 34 years for another game in the franchise to surpass the total number of units sold for what many consider to be the best game in the series. As of today, Mega Man 2 sits at number two with 1.51 million units.

As we wait for the next Mega Man flagship title to be announced and with our eyes set on Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection we would like to congratulate Kazuhiro Tsuchiya, Koji Oda, Masakazu Eguchi, Yuji Ishihara and everyone involved in Mega Man 11's development. This is an amazing achievement.

  1. Do you know what this means? Not only does this prove once and for all that people still care about Mega Man, but Mega Man's best selling game is a new one. Can you say that San you say that Sonic?

    1. The whole Sonic franchise has sold 4 times more than the whole Megaman franchise.

    2. Of course they do, because they keep making them.

    3. I'm pretty sure one Sonic game on average outsells the entire Mega Man series lol

      Delete
    4. Well Sonic as a franchise has sold more than 1.5 billion copies.

      Delete
    5. If you count how many Sonic games are out there then it's not surprising at all. The amount of Sonic franchise games is almost 4 to 5 times of the whole MM franchise.

    6. "Can you say that San you say that Sonic"

Sonic franchise has topped 1.5 Billion according to SEGA's most recent financial report.
Mania sold over a million within a year.
The numbers are all mixed up, but Sonic Mania is around estimated to be around 3-4 million sales with Forces at 5-7 million.

Mega Man is nowhere near as prolific as you guys love to claim.

    7. If I counted right, Wikipedia says Megaman is the 67th best selling game franchise of all time. That's not bad, especially when you can count the games released past 2008 on one hand. Had new releases kept coming out regularly it would probably be in the 30s or 40s.

      Delete
    8. And how many of them have 70 plus releases?

    9. Just to clear a few things.
Sonic's 1,5 billion included mobile games downloads IIRC.
Remember that Sonic used to be the mascot of a console manufacturer. Sonic best selling games are the two first entries, but that's because Sonic 1 was a pack-in title. It has several successful games after that such as Adventure , Colors , Generation, etc.
Overall, i'd say Sonic's situation isn't really comparable to Mega Man. They have their similarities, but their positions are vastly differents.

    1. I hope not to be honest. Classic is great but we need other sub series games to step out into the spotlight for a change. X9, Legends 3, these games deserve a chance. I'm not saying 12 should never happen, but let's give some other blue bombers a chance.

      Delete
    2. I think they should alternate between the different series. I want 12 someday, but they should make something else first. Repetition would hurt in the long run.

  5. Great stuff! The only knock I can give the game is from the prospective of speedrunning, as Power Gear Tundra Storm takes a lot of the fun and guesswork out of routing.

That aside, the development team did excellent work! Glad that it took the crown for sales!

  6. Hopefully this means Capcom will stop focusing on trash like XDive and give us an actual game, but I ain't holding my breath.

    1. We know they are already on a new game. Now the question is whether it will be announced anytime soon.
As for Xdive, it's not exactly that they're "focusing" on it, merely that it's a thing. (heck, it isn't done by any of the team in Japan and is instead being done by a secondary team in Taiwan). Arguably, it would be better for the serie if they did put more effort into it (as otherwise, it is reflecting poorly on Mega Man's image) , but that's another story.

  7. Great news!
I hope it keeps going up though, if we could get above 2 millions, that would be a nice milestone.

  8. The fact that it took four years to sell only 1.6m units is actually pretty awful news.
But, well, a step forward is still a step forward.

    1. This was my reaction. I knew Mega Man as a series was never a crazy seller, but never knew it was THIS low.

    2. Ya'll need to be more thankful, I am the first to shut down fanboys in lala land thinking Mega Man is anywhere near the selling power of a Mario, Pac-Man, Sonic etc but the reverse far end is just as bad. There are series out there that would sell their soul to have over a million units sold, you don't think Advance Wars, Contra, Custom Robo, Front Mission, Klonoa, Goemon, Suikoden, Star Ocean etc etc the list goes on and on heck even series that are iconic and you'd think would average at least MM11's numbers can only sale around those numbers with their most iconic and acclaimed games at times with AAA budgets like Castlevania, Mana, Mainline SMT.. and heck even Persona before the latest entry.

Do you guy's know how much of a massive feat it was for a Guilty Gear game to cross the million unit sold mark? Mega Man did it like at least 5 times, with a bunch of entries basically up there like X legacy collection at over 900k units. It's not that bad, we got it pretty good all things considered.

    3. I am very thankful. I straight-up said "a step forward is still a step forward".

I do not know what you think you are venting about.

      Delete
    4. I am not "venting", I am saying "the fact that it took four years to sell 1.6m units is actually pretty awful news" is actually not awful news, it's pretty decent news.

In my opinion that number is good and what good Mega Man games should average around. Not every game has the ability to crap money no matter the frequency or quality like a Pokemon or a Call of Duty. Some are content to survive on decent reception, but to be honest Mega Man doesn't always get the decent reception it deserves.

Again this is just my opinion and I can't force people to accept it but I think the Mega Man Zero, ZX and Legends series merited much higher numbers than they have considering their quality, legacy (MMZ for it's prominent story in a series not known for one as well as solid game design and difficulty in general, Legends for being one of the first conversions of a popular 2D series into 3D while introducing staple mechanics in that genre such as lock-on) and branding. I also think games like Maverick Hunter X and Mega Man Powered up are super overlooked gems considering etc.

      Delete
    5. It is awful news because videos games are first and foremost a commercial product to sell for money. If a game is slow to sell competitive numbers, that is a problem, regardless of whether or not we like the game series.

If your opinion is that 1.6m over 4 years is good and what good games should be averaging, well, I'm sorry but it would be best to cut this off here. I don't think we'll be seeing eye-to-eye.

      Delete
    6. You are right, we won't be seeing eye to eye, of course it could always do better and I welcome it but to scoff at 1.6 million units sold just shows the level of ungrateful (which is not to say completely) you are toward the fortunes you have. Many fans of many series do not even get to experience the scent of those numbers from afar. Many games have bigger budgets even, and still cannot recoup the cost of production. You talk about 4 years yet there are entire franchises that never cross 1mill let alone closer to 2m than not. I have named several prominent beloved franchises above but just ask fans of mainline Shin Megami Tensei how much units one of their most legendary, considered to be best in class of its genre, breakthrough, signature titles sold after 20 years combine with a remastered port to all modern platforms save for mobile, after that do the same to Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden and Strider fans for their best selling games ... throw in Ys, Disgaea, Bionic Commando and Onimusha for good measure then come back and let me know if the number you get is more or less than 1.6 million.

      Delete
    7. Mega Man could definitely sell better, but 1,6 million isn't anywhere near a bad number. Even putting aside that it is the best the franchise has done, it is just a good number for a game of that scope in general.
If it was some huge AAAAA title that costed millions to make, now that would be bad news.
I'd definitely like if it sell better, but "pretty awful"? That's a exaggeration, the game is a definite success.

    1. First, Capcom Taiwan mobile division is a different entity from Tsuchiya's team. Doing one does not prevent them from doing the other if it can be profitable as well.
2nd, even a successful gacha game will eventually lose steam, especially if they no longer have characters to add.
3rd, if Dive is profitable, this would actually make it easier for Tsuchiya or anyone else to convince the higher up that the Brand is still profitable. Making it more likely that they greenlight projects. They're even likely to let them work better rather than rush a product like X6/7 to get a quick buck because they already have a Dive to do this.
And that's not getting into the questions others than rentability, which might not matter for the suits, but are definitely a factor for the devs.
The real issue with Dive is how it affects the brand image.

  11. imo MM11 is extremely good, def a top game in the classic series for me, play it over 2 nowadays, heck i play even 4 more than 2 now. only downside are the wily stages being only really 2 levels, but MM6 also did that, just mr X padded it out.

  12. Curious what the Megaman 2 numbers are based on. Does it include all the digital sales and compilations from over the years, or just the initial NES run?

    1. Dunno about the digital sales, but I'm pretty sure this exclude the compilations.

  13. I have a feeling that X9 have the potential to reach 2 million units while Capcom will announce the BN legacy collection sold 1.75 million units.

    ReplyDelete
  14. X9 might be a thing, and it will most likely be a cashgrab if it does end up existing.
Congratulations to the 11 team members, making a well-selling MM game is one hell of a feat, even if I'd argue the game itself was disappointing.

    1. Your not the only one. 11 was OK. Acceptable. Unoffensive. Pleasing. But not Great. It got close, but dropped the ball in Wily's castle and cast.

    2. Let's just hope they don't keep endlessly milking dive like the past few years since it saves them money and risk while they keep profiting endlessly. At least back in the day before gacha, they were forced to release new games on consoles and PC to make money vs gacha dlc that seems never ended.

  15. Okay, but how?

I liked 11, sure 'nuff, but I liked 5 and 3 a lot more. 11 felt a little lacking in the music department and the gameplay didn't do anything particularly unique. I'd even say 9 or 10 were better, overall… and I don't even like those two, particularly.

So, yeah. 11 was definitely a beautiful game with a decent story, but overall? It was just another Rockman game whose hype outweighed the product. (And trust me. I was hyped!)

    1. I'd say it was really good. We're all going to have our favorite and least favorite but that doesn't change that it is a fine game on it's own.
But more importantly, that's Because it was the first Mega Man game in years meaning that the demand was much higher than for any game that came out just a year after the previous one. And also for once, everyone realized that we should made sure to buy it to prove Capcom that the serie still has potential.
Sales are affected by a variety of factors.
