Mattson Tomlin ('The Batman') is Writing the Live-Action Mega Man Movie

The live-action Mega Man movie has a brand-new writer. Mattson Tomlin is penning the script for the video game to film adaptation, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Tomlin is known for his work on various short films and is currently co-writing the much-anticipated The Batman (2021) with Matt Reeves.

Tomlin is either replacing or teaming up with Ariel Schulman, who was previously announced as the film's writer in 2018. Nothing has been officially announced on this front, however.

As previously reported, the live action Mega Man movie will be directed by Henry Joost. It will be produced by Chernin Entertainment, the studio behind the popular Planet of the Apes franchise, with Masi Oka attached as the lead producer. 20th Century Fox/Disney are no longer distributing the movie, as Chernin Entertainment recently cut ties with the company.  A new distributor has not been announced.

More news on this project as it comes. Stay tuned!

    1. No, no, no. it needs to be done. Contrary to what one might think at first glance, we have nothing to lose about it.
      1. If it is good, well we get a good movie. (hey, unlikely, but not impossible.)
      2. If it's bad hollywoodians live action adaptation have the advantage of, well...still being hollywoodian movie and thus having more exposure worldwide than... than more or less anything else, really (except bigger hollywood films). This could be a problem if it could color negatively people's opinions of the original source, but nowadays everyone is fully aware that Live adaptations suck and don't reflect the source material. And even if they are not aware of it, Internet is there to remind them. So all it cause is more people hearing about Megaman (for exemple, note that the Ghost In the Shell movie caused a increase in sale for the manga, a manga published in the early 90's. The fuss about the awful Death Note netflix film led to a some people discovering the anime in 2017). And what Megaman needs now is mainstream exposure.
      3. Heck, if we're not to unlucky it can even ends up being bad in a entertaining way. So bad it's funny to watch.
      4. If they do make it and it fail, it will at least have the advantage of preventing once and for all more of it being made. Like how Dragon Ball Evolution made it clear for everyone that no american live action adaptation should be made, ever. if they don't you will just get projects after projects until one of them is eventually made. I'd rather see them making it now (and beneficiate from the exposure of having a guy who wrote a mainstream superhero movie attached to it, see 2.).

    1. Even though I am a Ruby-Spears apologist, I would be very concerned if that happened. I doubt anyone wants a Mega Man back from a focus group that didn't know who Mega Man was to begin with.

  8. There's no reason for all this negativity over a live action movie until we see a trailer or final product. It's entirely possible that a live action Mega Man movie could be done in a way that pleases fans and newcomers alike if proper care is taken. No big budget movie is ever fully live action these days anyway because of all the CGI that is added in post production. Perhaps Mega Man himself will be CGI filmed in a live action world similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which I would be happy with.

    1. Live action video game movies don't exactly have a track record for being good.

    2. Super Mario Bros, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, Doom, Silent Hill, Dead Rising, Double Dragon, Warcraft and i'm probably missing a few more, but still, videogame movies are always a flop. Always. No mather the care they put into it. I don't know if the Sonic movie will be any different, sure, they listened to feedback about the design, but you can't change the plot.

    3. "No matter the care they put into it", on all the one you mentioned, the only one in wich they did put care was Warcraft (and that might have been their problem). Many of the other COULD have been good, or just decent.
(Just to be clear, I'm not saying that the Mega Man movie will be good because of it, nor that it exccuses theses movies being bad)

  9. They could make the WORLD that Mega Man is in live-action! You know, the city and the stages that the Robot Masters are in, and just have the characters run through it in CGI and that would be fine, but I imagine that it's going to be the real world with celebrity cast members and Mega Man just shows up in the real world...

I'm willing to give this movie a chance, but whether or not I enjoy the movie, that remains to be seen.

    1. Pretty sure it will be classic, but now that you say it, Star force could probably be more fitting when i think about it. There are clearly human and nonhuman character, they'd just have to have the right persons handle the special efffect for the EM waves and such, find someone to make a good CGI design for tha aliens...

  11. Wonder what they'll make it looks like. Megaman -the classic serie at least- takes place in a rather realistic world, so that would'nt be a problem, but what about the robots? The first robots looks too human so if they makes them Full CG among a cast of human, they will stick out, and possibly fell into the uncanny valey, but if they makes them humans with costume this might looks rather campy. This might ends up being even trickier than to animate pokemons in a live action. So there's the option to redisign them to make them more "realistic", but then it might ends up very differents from the game.
Of course the solution would be to go with the more obviousely robotic robot master (as oposed to the one who looks like guys in costume) like torch-man or commando-man. after all, nothing say they have to pick the ones from MM1 or 2

    1. I feel like they'd end up looking like the Box Art versions if they went for live action.

  12. Eh, Hollywood should just save themselves some time-and-money and license the movie Blue Core Studios did eight years ago. That movie was way better than most video game movie "adaptations" are.

    Their "Roll" was super-cute, too~

  14. Please just stop him. Live action is a terrible idea. Animate it or don't do it at all.
