Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection Debuts at #2 in Physical Sales in Japan (Update)

During its first week on sale in Japan, Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection debuted at No. 2, selling 18,238 units on Nintendo Switch, according to Famitsu. Among new releases, it was the week’s top-performing title, finishing behind only the juggernaut that is Pokemon Pokopia.

The PlayStation 5 version did not appear in the top 10, but demand for the collection appears to be strong on both platforms. Capcom confirmed last night that most, if not all, physical copies across Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 have sold out throughout Japan, with new stock expected by late April. (UPDATE: Famitsu has expanded their chart to include PlayStation 5 shipments - 2,189 units. Combined sales is 20,427 units)

Although Star Force Legacy Collection opened below Battle Network Legacy Collection’s Japanese debut of 60,246 physical units across Switch and PS4 in 2023, that gap may say as much about supply as demand. With Capcom now moving to restock Star Force Legacy Collection, it seems likely the company underestimated interest and shipped too few physical copies to meet it.

As for digital sales, and how the collection may be performing outside Japan, there's no clear picture yet. If the game reaches a major sales milestone, as Battle Network Legacy Collection did when it surpassed one million copies sold through in its first two weeks, Capcom will likely share the news through a press release or on social media. We'll be keeping tabs.

  1. Definitely happy to hear this! I’ve been playing Star Force and it’s an absolute blast. Geo’s growth as a character is interesting to witness as I play.

I gotta make my obligatory Legends comment though; both Star Force and Legends have a lot in common. They both didn’t sell well upon their initial release, but as time went on they got way more love. Star Force’s success makes me hope that a Legends collection could possibly get the same results if given a chance.

  2. this is sweet... I mean, if any megaman franchise looks good, its Exe and Starforce... Although kinda unfortunate that the X series seems to be appreciated the most primarily by western audiences. Hope we get a new game though.

  3. I got curious and decided to look at what the opening sales for Star Force 3 were seeing as this is just physical for the legacy Collection I think it's important to note. Star Force 3 sold under half of the Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection at around 9,000 units so there is no way that this doesn't outperform every single Mega Man star force game

    1. Yeah, IMO Capcom would have a pretty strong case for not doing a SF collection given how poorly the original game sold.

The first LC got roasted by fans for being a cash grab but every successive release seems to be getting a warmer and warmer reception, and they have nearly all been strong sellers when you compare them to their original titles. I think even the initial cynics are starting to realize this is the most comprehensive release of MM games on a single generation of consoles and are for the most part finally getting it.

This is why I still think we'll eventually get a Legends collection, even though it would only be 3 titles, they're all fairly long with lots of replay-ability and if they manage the collection right (like they've been doing), it will perform well.

    2. I would appreciate a Legends collection, but there are so many issues with it on many fronts, apparently a VA drama with one of it's lead voice actors, the Inafune stuff, the cancellation drama etc. There certainly is a reason why Legends is either the last one or not getting a collection at all.

    3. Yeah, the VA for Teisel was convicted of some sick stuff. He passed away years back, so I'm not sure if there would be any ongoing issues with keeping his voice in the games, but likely not.

I do know there would be a licensing issue with some of the billboards in MML1, as they were of some real companies. That's likely a tougher situation to navigate.

Inafune is irrelevant at this point in all honesty, he left Capcom 15 years ago now and his opinion on anything carries the same weight as yours or mine.

    4. All of that is really isn’t an issue (well, minus the Tiesel VA stuff of course), the playstation store versions of the game removed the copyright stuff and replaced it with in game advertisements. Also the VA drama was discovered before those games made it to the online store, so if they didn’t have a problem with it then, they probably won’t now, as terrible as it is.
