SFxMM's Missing Save System Is Deliberate, Says Capcom

So, what's up with Street Fighter X Mega Man's missing save system? Responding to a forum user who asked this very question, Capcom USA’s Senior Vice-President, Christian Svensson, assured everyone it wasn't an oversight. Here's what he had to say:

"We talked about adding passwords or saves but folks here (and Zong Hui) felt that the game, like MM1,  could be played through in about 40 minutes and that it wasn't necessary. If you had to step away in the middle of a session, just leave it running.

Maybe we'll do an update and add it, but it was a deliberate decision."

Personally, I don't mind. But I can see where it might come in handy. Can you imagine the pain and agony having to start from scratch if, say, your power went out? And right before the secret boss, too!

So what do you think? Does SFxMM need some sort of password/save file feature? Should Capcom get to work on that update?

  1. It was intentional?

    ...

    IT WAS FREAKING INTENTIONAL?

Why would you... How can you... The sheer LAZINESS of it appalls me!

Who cares if it can be polished off quickly? People might get stuck on a boss or level, someone might need to take a break and come back later! It's inexcusable!

  2. There is no doubt that the game needs a password system. All the 8bit games can definitely be beaten in one sitting, but I like to throw on the game while I wait to do other stuff, so it is annoying to have to start at the beginning every time. Especially since the last time I played I almost beat the game before having to stop to do something else.

  3. yes it needs it

the game crashes sometimes and its a pain to do it all over again

i wass at the boss rush and i got a game maker error

  4. I left it yesterday when I first started playing it. I had cleared all the main stages and the first final stage. I was going to come back to it after working, but when I came back it had crashed. DX

It really wasn't a big deal, though. It was quick and easy enough to get back there. Still, a Save feature would've been nice, and it would be nice if they had a reason to omit it other than "you shouldn't need it."

  5. I can take or leave passwords. I haven't used one in a Megaman game in years...

But the lag on my non-gaming savvy laptop is brutal, not to mention the issues I've had with my MadCatz controller.

Priority one: Port this sucker to a console. NOT PS3!!!

  6. Ha! MegaMan 1, 40 minutes? Took me about 16 hours and it's nowhere near as fun.

  7. In this day and age, after 25 years of Mega Man, it's pretty unforgivable to not have save or at least a password system, 40 minutes or not.

Even Powered Up has a save. And that's a Mega Man 1 remake!

Even MM9 and 10 have saves, and they are "retro" styled, in the vein of 1-6.

When those all have a way to record your progress, it's pretty unforgivable design to deliberately leave it out. SFxMM is NOT MM1. I mean, geez, Ive complained about trying to be Mega Man 2 all over again, but this is a bit worse.

  8. Yes, a password and save feature would definitely be nice, but what they really need to do right now is fix those laggy controls.

  9. Yes,please! I don't have much time during the day or night to play as much as I'd like, and I would also like if possible the option to replay a level with the abilities I've gained from other characters! Other than that, the game is great and I don't have too many complaints, though perhaps an actual story or even playability with other characters or appearances by other Mega Man characters would be amazing! Much appreciation for a great game, though!

  10. It's almost the year 2013 not having ANY sort of a system to continue should not be acceptable.

  11. No game "needs" to have a save feature if you're willing to leave it on all day.

However, this is the year 2012. So...yeah.

I mean, SFxMM is free, so it's hard to complain about it. But if you INSIST to go there, Capcom isn't going to come out on top. First of all, some of us have lives, which may demand our attention somewhere in that 40 minute window. Secondly, those who lack the MAD ELITE SKILLZ to blaze through the game would probably appreciate the ability to digest it in smaller bits.

I mean, by Sven's logic, why does MM2 have a save system? It's not much longer than MM1, and it's nowhere NEAR as hard.

  12. No offense to Zhu for all his awesome work, but seriously. I just want to fight the fortress bosses again. And I don't have to have to work at it again. I'm lazy.

Also, 40 minutes my ass. It took me two hours my first time. XP

  13. I was fine with the lack of saving, until I started trying to get the secret boss. Then it became a nightmare.

  14. The addition of a save/password feature would be greatly appreciated.

  15. Pretty sad, one of the reasons why I like this series it's because I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I like the challenges. Mega Man it's one of the few franchises that offer a gameplay between hardcore and casual gaming (old school hardcore gaming if you want to label it).
I'm looking forward for that update, I haven't got time for playing this game.

  16. I think the game is a little too short for a password system, If it had mm3's length then yeah I would dig it. but there's only 12 stages, counting the secret boss.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes. I need at least a password or save system. I got all the way up tot eh final 4 stages, and I don't want to keep having to play all the levels over again. I rather start at the 4 boss levels if possible. :)

  18. EVERY GAME should have a Save/Password setting!!

  19. Password or Save System is a must! Without it, we will suffer a lot, and we will blame someone who created SFXMM.

  20. @ Mega Rock EXE

Actually, You CAN beat Mega Man 1 in about 40 minutes, sometimes it can be 45, but it's possible. I should know, cause before I decided to covert to doing LPs (and having to redo what videos I have from scratch which is what I''m doing ATM) My Mega Man 1 recording lasted about 42 minutes, and heck, I didn't even get a game over for the first time when I did recording.

And yes, this IS coming from a fan of the Mega RPG section.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No.
    It is OK.
We are SOOOO used to save features and some other helps (passwords, internet) to beat games. I, personally, appreciate the nice touch to beat a game from start to end without any helps. (just my thoughts)
    :)

  22. I don't really mind having no save/password system (though it would be awesome to have one). What I DO mind, though, is not being able to close my laptop without the game screen permanently turning black and having to quit, thus losing all my progress. And the laggy controls. And any other bugs Please fix it. Please? I like the game, but the bugs are buzzkill. D:

    ReplyDelete
  23. @ BassDS That's probably a speedrun, though, when you already know the game inside and out. When you're just playing causally, things like death and game-overs tend to happen.

And then there's real-life interruptions, getting stuck on a certain level or boss and then losing all your progress, and the general satisfaction that comes from a finished save file you can come back to at any time.

    ReplyDelete
  24. To those complaining about laggy controls, that's unlikely to be fixed anytime soon since the game was made in Game Maker and that as a whole tends to lag on newer systems.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's sad when a fan-game with so much endorsement ends up being rather mediocre. If they didn't make it in Game Maker and actually took time to polish it, then it'd be a lot better.

Oh well, at least we have the dozens of other megaman fan games, like romhacks and such. Rokko-Chan was made in flash, yet it's a lot better than this. This is just degrading.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Um, yeah I would like a password or save system.
Honestly, while I do love Megaman, I am not amazing at side-scrollers. I know that is a hallmark of Megaman but so are passwords. For people who are not fantastic at these types of games they will probably never get past the initial eight 'Street Fighters'. Lastly, although it has already been addressed, some people don't want to replay an entire game just to reach a specific part.

As a side-note, I don't understand why Capcom felt the need to address this issue publicly. To me, the way they phrased their official statement was less informative and more aggravating. Yes, it lets us know that it wasn't an oversight but at the same time it comes off as using faulty reasoning. The problem with that is it comes off as Capcom not being able to make well thought out decisions, even only to a minor degree.

  27. It would be appreciated (a debug menu would be even better, while also not needing to add a save/password feature as you could go to any stage at any time), but I can see why it's not there. The game's short and tough. It takes practice and patience to beat it the first time.

I was also wondering why there wasn't a password or save feature when I first played MM1. Just continue or go back to square one. But the game is designed to be beaten in one sitting. And alas, MM2 brought us a password system plus E-Tanks.

So yeah, not needed but appreciated.

  28. Ditto Parra. I haven't touched the game yet (though I did download it) since I'm really busy, but I was thinking about maybe going through a stage or two--you know, to make incremental progress. Now I find out I can't even do that.

So yeah, I'll have to find some window of time to play this, but probably not in the next little while.

  29. All my facepalming, all my facepalming. I guess part of the blame lies on the fan-game's creator (no offense to him really), but still... all my facepalming.

  30. I've said this before somewhere else, but it bears repeating.

I may love Mega Man, but that doesn't mean I'm great, or even that good at it. I love it DESPITE the difficulty I have completing them. So finding out that the secret boss requires 3 perfects and having no save system is like a slap to the face for a fan like me. I did eventually beat Mega Man 9 with no deaths, but do you know how many times I had to restart?! I ONLY completed that because of the save system and thought about giving up numerous times.

Long story short: Please add a save system or I probably won't bother playing it anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, I know I'm in the 21st century and all, but I'm pretty poor, and my family happens to only own 1 computer. Even 40 straight minutes of continuous time is hard to get, and there's no way I could just leave the game running while other people are using the computer. So, basically, although I've enjoyed the bit I've played, there's no point in me trying to do anything with the game as long as I can't save some kind of progress.

Kind of a shame really, it seems pretty fun, even if Ryu beats me down...

  32. Game just crashed on M. Bison. I'd be fine going back to Balrog with all the E. Tanks I saved. Lol nope, gotta play it through again. Not the first time the game's crashed on me during that "40 minutes"

At least a save or password feature would alleviate some of this aggravation.

Also, while I appreciate the challenge of limited E. Tanks, it feels very un Mega Man.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Of course it has no saving feature, the game is free after all. Knowing capcom they will ask us to pay to unlock or download the save feature xD

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's a feature!

    We Bioware now

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well yes. The save feature must be in the game. At least a simple password system, like in Mega Man Rocks. And yes, the game is brutally laggy sometimes.
By the way, to be offtopic again. Did you notice some of the songs are remixes of Classic Mega Man games, Like Seth‘s Lab (MM2 Wily 3-4) or Dhalsim‘s Stage (MM3 Snake Man)?

    ReplyDelete
  36. If this was a console game, then the lack of a save feature would not have been a huge problem. I would not have liked that feature, but it would not have been too much of a big deal since you can pause the game, leave it idle, and continue when you can (unless the power goes out).

But this is not a console game. It's a computer fan-game that risks crashing on even a newer computer. How could they be so naive to not see this? Idiotic.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What the fuck. And the thought of giving people the OPTION didn't cross their minds? This is ridiculous :/

    ReplyDelete
  38. Passwords are a must! The game is so glitchy, it is a pain. I died many times because Mega Man didn't jump over a pit when I pressed the button. The only good point is that sometimes he starts charging his weapon without holding the attack button!

Perhaps capcom didn't understand that for such a thing to not be infuriating, you need to have infinite lives. Not everyone likes having to start from the beginning upon every game over.

  40. This reminds me of getting to Reptile in Mortal Kombat 1.

Maybe some of you aren't, but I'm sure that like myself, some of you are old enough to remember when NO game had saves and not that many had passwords. I think it's funny listening to you piss and moan about it!

I think they should have put in a password system personally, especially since the game sounds quite buggy, but really, it sounds like this is a fully retro gaming experience!

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Cucumber: Except all main Megaman games after the first had password or save systems. And really, just because game used to not have these features, it doesn't mean it is or even was a good idea.
