Mega Man Universe Revealed

Capcom official revealed Mega Man Universe today over at Capcom Unity. Slated to release on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, the game is said to revolutionize the classic formula in new and creative ways. Keiji Inafune, directly involved in the project, had this to say:

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce Mega Man Universe. This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be. When fans finally get to see it, I believe they’ll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true.”

Not much else is know about the game at this point, but the above trailer does drops some cryptic hints that MMU might act as a sort of crossover with other Capcom franchises, namely Street Fighter and Ghosts 'n Goblins. The tagline, "Your world. Megafied", also seems to suggest that the game will support user created content and customization.

More details for the game are said to come from Comic-Con next week. The show will also play host to some cool MMU merchandise such as a foam buster, and a cosplay contest. More details on that here. Naturally, I'll be keeping you up to date with the news as it comes in.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  1. A crossover between Mega Man, Street Fighter, and other Mega Man franchises? Meh, as if that hasn't been done a million times already, with the Marvel vs. Capcom series and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. While I'm glad it's not that stupid Mega Man 2 3DS rehash, at the same time, I'm a bit disappointed, since this isn't the Maverick Hunter X and Powered Up sequel that we were hoping for.

  2. DO NOT WANT.

Why is Capcom so insistant upon making Mega Man "retro, nostalgia?" I really don't like the way they're treating the originl series at all.

    Boooo!

  3. I don't really know what to make of it, but I'm excited. Capcom sure loves crossovers.

  4. ...Whoops, I meant to say "other Capcom franchises" in my above comment. My mistake.

  5. haha, ugly classic Mega Man at the end of the trailer! Love it!

  9. Not even WiiWare? Well that's a shame.

I'm a tiny bit disappointed, but in the same light, it looks like I was right about my prediction.

  10. No Wii version? Really? Come on Capcom, why not put it on Wii?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm imagining something with LittleBigPlanet levels of customization, but it's Mega Man and you can use the powers of every single Capcom character in existance

  12. What the shit is this?

  13. Pretty sure it says "Megafied", not "Megafield"

I DONT WANT MEGAMAN UNIVERSE (hey, why it's not rockman universe ;(

  15. What?

    I mean, what?

  16. And once again, another DIGITAL RELEASE.

Has Mega Man become so "cult-ish" that you think it appeals only to a specific audience? That the franchise doesn't deserve -- no, isn't viable enough to be sold at retail?

    ReplyDelete
  17. More retro, classic series fan wanking. When the hell is the X series gonna get some love, Capcom?

    ReplyDelete
  18. On the flip side you could say Mega Man is ahead of the curve since all video games are going to be digital releases one day anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  19. WHERE'S THE WII VERSION?!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wow, I really don't know what to make of all this. I won't pass judgment till I see some actual screens and gameplay, however.

  21. If this is 8-Bit, I hope they realize that someone could probably start modding Megaman 2 and release a better game by the time they're done rehashing everything unoriginal they can put into this game.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not impressed with the faux claymation look, but honestly, it may be too early to draw any conclusions.
Sadly, as MegaMan/Rockman fans we don't have the luxury to be fussy. We have to take what we can get.

  23. WHOA! That kid just had the most awesome dream ever!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Basically what Shine said already. It has to be a Little Big Planet inspired game with Capcom properties. Is this the game that they were teasing that was suppose to be announced at Comic Con?

I wonder if it'll be 2D since its a digital download. Either way I'm excited to hear more of this.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, it's exactly not the same as before, so Classic fans are going bitch endlessly.

And since it isn't they favorite series, everybody else is going to bitch endlessly!

This is why the Mega Man fanbase is one of the worse.

Alternately, as somebody on another site brought my attention to, it';s going to be Mega Man: Decade.

I doubt anybody is going to get that.

  26. Ok this is the suckiest thing i´d ever expect from crapcom!

  30. I can has Mega Man Legends?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Why so bashful? Do you guys think the game will happen in the room of a kid and Mega Man will fight against toys just because that's what happens in the commercial? What if Mega Man Legends had a Man in a Mega costume like this:

"On the flip side you could say Mega Man is ahead of the curve since all video games are going to be digital releases one day anyway!"
The day that that happens, i'll be shedding a tear for the industry.

But besides that, the trailer looks quite awesome, and I can't wait to play it on my wi- *Notices systems*

That's alright, i can still play it on the PSP's PS- *Remembers that PSP and PS3 have different downloadable stores for some reason.*

This industry is really hurting me with it's spastic releases. I may have to buy all 3 consoles soon.

  33. Hmm… not sure how I feel about this.

On one hand, I’m excited about the gameplay possibilities and I’m glad any new Mega Man is coming at all. And the fact that it’s a 2D platformer is obviously a relief and a very good thing. And I’m REALLY REALLY glad it’s not an MMO/Mega Man Online.

On the other, it seems that, like an MMO, they’ve thrown any regard for the series’ characters. story, and overall canon out the window. I can see WHY they’d do this at this point, but on a personal level I really don’t like it. Part of why I love Mega Man is how much I like the, well, universe. Without that, it becomes a really fun platforming series, but without the charm that makes it special.

Still, I’m curious to see more. I think I probably would have rather just seen a Mega Man 11 announcement, though…

    ReplyDelete
  34. aw man, I was hoping somwthing would come after the starforce series like the year in 23X or something.

    ReplyDelete
  35. After seeing the trailer, I love the creative early 90's feel, but it really worries me. Other characters inside a MegaMan game which clearly have no business being there? Reminds me a great deal of the super-famous flash came Super Mario Crossover. Still...I guess this clearly separates MegaMan Universe from MegaMan Online? To sum it up, the trailer was witty, the concept is iffy, and the "American MegaMan" at the end gave me a giggle.

    ReplyDelete
  36. A crossover? Meh, not interested. It's enough with the Capcom vs. series, no need to include Megaman in the mess.

Still waiting for when Inafune decides to continue/conclude the X/Legends/ZX series...

Also, the lack of Wii there bothers me a little.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The ad was awesome, it was like a corny 80s video game advert, either way, it does not seem to be connected to Rockman Online

    ReplyDelete
  38. You have to remember Nintendo forces a strict size limit on Wii Ware games though, it’s why the Tales of Monkey Island games ended up being horribly compressed for instance. Capcom just might figure it’s not worth the effort of cutting corners and compressing everything to make it fit.

Don't get me wrong I'd like a Wii Ware version myself but I can see why Capcom from a business stand point would decide it wasn't viable.

    ReplyDelete
  39. - Disappointed. Personally, I'd like some game screens. The trailer is very very american-ized. Anyway... sort of cross-over. No other clues after this battle of toys. ^_^;;

    ReplyDelete
  40. lawl, cute trailer.

I can't honestly tell if this is awesome or not o_O I don't know what to think. NEED MORE INPUT!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Interesting.

Not sure why people are complaining when they haven't even shown any gameplay vids yet.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't know aboutit. I will wait for real video. SIGHING. I hope it is not bad crossover.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This 8-bit style thing has gotten out of control.

Capcom really isn't trying anymore, how much longer do they honestly think they can milk nostalgia?

    ReplyDelete
  44. holy crap!

I don't care if it's 8bit or not, i'm gonna get this game!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Boo? I'd rather say Moo.

Not that I'm dissapointed (how can a game let me down even BEFORE actual footage comes out? That's common knowledge, right?). But this smells a bit too iffy. NEEDS
    MOAR ACTUAL GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE.

And yeah, I have to confess: I raged to see that it wasn't PU2/MHX2 XD.

AT LEAST IT'S NOT AN MMO, AMIRITE?

Feeling a bit too much dissapointed? Then just go and become a fan of another franchise. Bitchers can't be choosers. I'm just gonna wait for some actual gameplay footage to be released.

Oh, did I mention "WAIT FOR ACTUAL GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE" enough? 'Cause I don't think so.

I'LL WAIT FOR AN ACTUAL GAMEPLAY. Don't know about y'all, but I'll wait. If I happen to think it's crap, then I'll call it crap. If not, I'll keep an eye on it. I think that's how logic works, right?

Plus2, this is a TEASER. Pretty much like that Sonic 4 teaser: a pretty movie without any type of footage from the actual game. It's TEASING us to keep ourselves updated for any kind of news related to this UPCOMING game.

  46. I don't know what it is, but I think I love it!

  47. I have zero clue why you people are hating. It's a huge retro blow out. We haven't seen anything gamewize but im assuming it's gonna be like a hd snes game like earthworm jim hd. I'm sorry but the idea of playing thru a ghosts and goblins level in a mega man game is by far too fuck'n cool for me.

This game seems like it's gonna be the super smash bros for capcom. It's gonna be a bunch of classic games all in one with capcoms main face of the company at the forefront.

I have no idea why you people are bitching, expcially the X fans since x has been abysmal since mmx5.

    ReplyDelete
  48. BECAUSE, we are tired of Retro. Megaman needs to be MORE than just a nostalgia posterboy. we need HD Megamans, 3D megamans, etc etc. X9, ZX3.

Also, X has not been abysmal since 5. 7 I can give. that game was not very well finished. But X8 and Command Mission were both very good, even if lacking Inafune's touch. X6 itself was made by the X5 team. people hate only because they suck.

As for the game at hand, Im kinda excited... But at the same time, very upset with InaFking for no Wii version

    Poor poor me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wait hold on, I thought MMU was an MMO. Or was that something else?

Don't want a crossover with other Capcom series.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dear God, the fanbase reaction... it's like Operate Shooting Star all over again.

How about you all save the venom until we see something that actually resembles real gameplay? Because I don't see a single thing in that trailer that looks like it's from the game proper, and yet people are hating on it.

    What The Hell, Fanbase.

Now I'm not defending the game itself, because I haven't SEEN it yet. NONE of us have. How about we reserve judgment until it's clear what exactly we're supposed to be judging, hmm?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Upon seeing this video, I was as giddy as a schoolgirl. Then I come to check the comments and see all this hate... wtf? I'm confused. Very little is known about this, but the insinuations made from this teaser trailer are promising, if you ask me. I'm assuming that Mega Man will be able to tap into the powers of other characters beyond just those from his own franchise, and that sounds pretty effin' cool to me.

    ReplyDelete
  55. When I first heard that this was announced, I was thinking "FUUUUUU- Now I have to keep my 360."

Now that I've seen it... My 360 is out of the door faster than ever.

    ReplyDelete
  56. You can complain all you want but fact of the matter is the retro games have been the only Mega Man games Capcom has made a significant profit on in years. If you were Capcom and had a choice to try and go back to the things that didn't sell before or go on with the retro movement that did, you would go with the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  57. it is probably a game where megaman fights other capcom characters and he will get his powers after defeating them. if it is a classic game i want to see Bass!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think is not a 8-bit game again because i cant find other reason for not releasing it on the wii.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well this smashed my dreams yet again for dash 3.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "Bitchers can't be choosers"?
You got that saying all wrong. People who love the franchise and pay for it, such as us, can indeed bitch and choose. Deal with it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think people are forgetting that 3/4s of people who still buy mm games are people that loved mm as kids in the 8 and 16 bit eras. Honestly we haven't seen anything yet so no one should realy be bitching.

But can you seriously think of something cooler than hd mega man going thru levels based on levels of old capcom games, fighting there respective last boss and stealing there powers?

I'm sorry but mm fighting bison/wesker/satan is way to god damn cool.

I honestly can't be more stoked.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I hope this game ends up being the greatest Mega Man game of all time if for no other reason that to rub it in all of these haters' faces. Seriously, stop judging this game from a vague, cryptic teaser trailer. We don't even know if it will actually be 8-bit, and Inafune's interview with Gamespot, as well as the fact that this won't be coming out on the Wii, actually point in this game being much bigger than that. You're all just jumping to ridiculous conclusions. Sheesh!

When people see a trailer to a movie, and its all just a voice/text on the screen, and only 2 seconds of ACTUAL footage, does that make it bad? No. (Though that trailer would suck)

  72. @Almost everyone on internets

BAWWWWW. Seriously. Mega Man 9&10 came out and people auto-flamed those who wish that Capcom would not prey on people's nostalgia. Now that a trailer came out which was supposed to be 80s themed and had a sprite Mega Man cutout? Oh no! Obviously this is going to be game of Mega Man 11 8-Bittitude!

No. If it was it would be going to the Wii too. So it is most likely going to be in 3D or rely heavily on online. Or both.

According to the interview it will take place in the classic series. Maybe you will play as player created characters? At the of the trailer, if I recall correctly, Megaman had different parts of his body changing into Ryu and Arthur.

If you were just playing as Mega Man I don't think it would just be called Mega Man Universe. Although it could be implying that you are creating a universe if it's mostly level creation. But I don't see Capcom making a whole game around that.

Either way I am hoping for a playable Volnutt.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ok guys, first of all, it's a teaser, not a trailer, if it were a trailer, it would have some gameplay in it, so stop saying "ZOMG it's gonna suck", we will see more at ComicCon, so do not threat, this is only to hype you up for it, It is still unsure if this is related to Rockman Online or not, we will see soon though.......

    ReplyDelete
  74. The fandom is really disillusioning me right now. No wonder Inafune thinks a Mega Man game can't sell in retail anymore if this is the kind of attitude the so-called fans have when a new game is announced.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The haters are all wrong, I doubt this will be a crossover, I think it will just be some crazy custom moves that you will be able to create in your megaman story *hint hint*

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm with you CPoC. Little Big Planet never caught my attention, just because it seemed focused on level creation, but the actual gameplay or characters didn't interest me at all. If this really is a Mega Man version of LBP though, I love the idea of playing unique Mega Man levels and maybe creating my own. Imagine if a talented "artist" recreated MMV (Game Boy) Awesome! The numerous MM rom hacks out there show fans know how to create some amazing levels (hello ROckman no Constancy)

Though even better is the idea of bringing other Capcom characters into this. I can understand people being a little fed up with crossovers, and sure I'm a little down from it not being Legends 3, but if this really is something along the lines of Mario Crossover or Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, playing through other classic titles as Megaman? Using other heroes' powers? SIGN ME UP!

And I just have to comment on this:

"I wanted me too Rockman Rockman 2!!!!
I DONT WANT MEGAMAN UNIVERSE (hey, why it's not rockman universe ;("

Ugh, freakin' weaboo. But I do have to wonder if this will strictly be focused on an American audience as I noticed the logo has Mega Man in Red white and blue.

if one more of you says that i'm gonna flip a bitch. you guys are being more insistent than the so-called "haters" themselves. WE GET IT, YOU'RE OPTIMISTIC.
even though it's a teaser, teasers should get you pumped. i PERSONALLY (calm yo ass down) think it looks unappealing (WHATEVER IT IS). i don't like the idea of having other capcom characters / attributes of capcom characters in a megaman game, whether it's true or not. it just doesn't match to me... it's weird. maybe if it were like a fighting game, fine. and yeah, my dreams for megaman legends 3 are dead. orz
also, is this what the inafune announcement is gonna be at comic con....?

    ReplyDelete
  79. You know, I swear there are more people ranting about "all you fans with bad attitudes" than there are fans with bad attitudes.

It's like you're all looking for excuses to hate on people. And then you say this is why the fanbase sucks. You're the ones who suck.

There's nothing wrong with expecting people to have reasonable judgements.

It may be on the opposite side of the spectrum, but us EXE fans jumped the gun with OSS just last year. I'd say us EXE fans are a hell of a lot smarter now.

This fanbase is starting to turn into something like the Sonic fanbase... Without the whole disturbing furry crap. Then again, I should have seen this happening years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Well, I'm optimistic. I'm a little sick of the classic retro-style myself, but it's a Mega Man game by Inafune, so it can't go wrong in my eyes. Not because I'm a blind fanboy, but because of personal experience from Mega Man games he's worked on and games he didn't.

And this is Capcom, who generally pull off crossovers really well. In the entire history of Mega Man, this is mostly something new outside of fighters, so skepticism is to be expected, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  83. @Alilatias

Damn it, this just makes me wish for an PRC IRC channel. This type of communication is slow. PRC chat, nao! XD

Don't forget: the fact that the Classic fandom is brimming with n00bs lately doesn't mean that the intelligent, reasonable fans went poof. I'm just pointing that out.

Most Classic fann00bs just want more of the same. When a new game comes out that just doesn't look like the last game, they rage and bitch and complain without end. Therefore, your argument that the fandom is looking more like the Sonic fandom is partially true, because WE haven't give up hope

I mean, please. Most n00bs in the fandom ALWAYS want straight sequels. They state that EVERYONE wants DASH 3 (which I believe is not the time yet), there's an apparent consensus that MM11 will eventualy happen, they're still bugging us with X9, Z5 and ZX3.

Not even remakes or revamps: it's ALWAYS a damn sequel. And that fact is as old as the franchise itself.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I want Command Mission 2 already. Though this game should be interesting, if it has Ryu and other characters in it why is it called Megaman universe and not capcom universe?

If it all takes place in a mega man theme then that's going to be even lamer.

    ReplyDelete
  85. @ MusashiAA and others.

It is not that we want direct sequels to games, such as X and Legends; we want them to FINISH the series.

Legends was left at a major cliff hanger, and us fans just want to see a new, revamped game that can finally satisfy our needs. The reason we want it so badly, is because they left the game (legends 2) open to have a sequel.

People want X9 for the same reason, something to end the series and connect it to Zero series.

I would very much like a new Mega Man series, or game, done in a new style.. Like a FPS, Third-Person action-adventure-RPG, or heck, even a RTS during the Maverick Wars.

Also.. Being a bigger fan of Sonic, I can say for my self.. Something new means nothing if the game stinks in itself.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Hey, I want a Legends 3 as much as the next person, but the attitude that goes against anything new is exactly why the Legends series didn't do so well back when it came out in the first place. That's the irony in all of this. Everyone is rejecting this strange, new, unfamiliar thing, much like they did back when Legends 1 came out.

    ReplyDelete
  87. @Clown Prince of Crime:

Didn't the first Legends at least sell well enough for the second one to be made?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ok SO...You play as Megaman, and you have to fight 8 character from the capcom universe. When you defeat a boss(ryu, for example), he will assist you or Megaman will be able to transform into that character like in ZX Advent.

So this is Megaman Universe ? I hope not, what a stupid idea....

    ReplyDelete
  89. 1 The yellow Megaman is under appreciated. He better be a main character.
2 Megaman 2 sucked balls as big as the Guts Dozer, It's over appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  90. By the past week I was losing all interests in Mega Man so the news of MMU I thought it might stir things up then this comes out... and I've lost all hope.....However it might be interesting....I hope it has XBox Live and the other thing that PS3 has.

We cant judge much of a teaser trailer. A teaser trailer just gives us an idea not actual facts of a game or movie. For all we know it might not be 8-bit retro(only). Since its Universe the other Mega Man series might be involved. Plus I dont think its just straight forward like the Classic games are.

We'll just have to wait and see til further details...meanwhile I'll be selling all my Mega Man games soon as well as my other DS games as well as my red DS(I have 2 DS's) to earn some credits from Gamestop...I still got NARUTO: Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 and Halo Reach to look forward to in my miserable boring life.

    ReplyDelete
  91. @ Krazy Monkey: I'm quite sure that Legends 2 was more of a 'second chance' thing, rather than an indication of how well (or how badly) the first one sold.

After all, if Inafune really does like the Legends series as much as he says he did, I doubt he would have let the Legends series die after just one installment.

Notice how no Rockman series has yet to die with just one installment. Not even ZX, which is supposedly less popular than Legends, from the looks of things.

    ReplyDelete
  92. ^That's right. Even the original Mega Man 1 didn't sell too well, but Mega Man 2 is what saved the series. A lot of Mega Man games do at least get a second chance. The only exceptions would be Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X, but I think those sold MUCH worse than any others due to not many people having PSPs at the time (and of those few people, even less of them being Mega Man fans).
