Mega Man DOS Remake Mock-up So Good, It Should Be Real

You know, there's a handful of Mega Man games I'd like to see retouched or remade. It's not grocery list-sized but there's certainly some stuff I'd like to see revisited in my lifetime. Yeah; I'm one of the few guys who'd shamelessly invest in a complete "remake" of Mega Man Soccer, cut content and all. I'd buy that well before, say, DOS Mega Man remakes...

...Or so I thought.

Enter Simon S. Andersen. In a single tweet, the acclaimed art director of Owl Boy completely changed my wishlist with his "remake" DOS Mega Man animation. Sporting a fresh coat of 32-bit-inspired paint, this unplayable mock-up re-imagines Dyna Man's stage as something straight out of the PlayStation-Saturn era. It's incredible.

Yes; unplayable is the keyword here. This isn't a game-game by any means. It's a personal project that Andersen has been toiling away on for a good while. The good news is you can watch it again and again. I'm doing it for the xth-time as I write this! It's so good.

What do you think? Instant buy or no?

  1. Impressive, just…impressive. That’s all I can honestly say.

  3. That might be my favorite rendition of little pixel baby Rock ever.

  4. This is fitting; if I remember correctly: didn't the original DOS Mega Man begin as a fan project?

  5. Absolutely an insta-buy! It's a shame CAPCOM's not making sprite games again any time soon. Mega Man 11's art style is good and all, but I dig this look much, much more.

    1. There's just something about spritework that will trump 3D graphics when its done really well. Its like comparing hand-drawn animation with live action. Something is just LOST when the transition is made.

  6. a mockup is a mockup, i will only buy a game that shows me if it's gameplay, story, controls, replayability and others are worth it. good visuals and decent music are nice and all, but no, i wouldn't instantly buy it unless i was sure that all the other areas of it were well done aswell. i have seen many games that may be good visually, but not very good gameplay wise.

  8. It's a better design and fits the Mega Man 8 style he was aiming for, but my one complaint would be that Dyna Man is barely recognizable. More inspired by Dyna Man than actually Dyna Man.

  9. Much more interesting, attractive and beautiful than Rockman Dive. Rockman should always look like this

  10. To be honest, it looks better than Mega Man/Rockman 11

I'd say you're a silly sausage, myself. I mean, Mega Man('s) Soccer is a complete game. It's just missing some extras due to dumb programming.

Anyway… this project reminds me of that "new Rockman & Forte game" Blackbelt helped spoof, one April. It's a cute style that harkens back to the NES sprites and maybe even the earliest art style, and it's nice to see someone do something other than NES-style. Something about this just feels weird, though… I can't really put my finger on what. The radical redesigns of all the Robot Masters certainly doesn't help, on that front. Most of 'em really are unrecognizable.

That aside, I remember the last time one of these "unplayable mock-ups" came around. It eventually was made into a full-fledged fan game, and that fan game was awful for a wide variety of reasons. Something like this seems too simple to be bad, but you never know, sometimes.

  12. If Capcom did a remake in that pixel art style, I would pay for it.

  13. Yes! After MegaMan 11, I’ve wanted at least 1-3 remade. I would repurchase the entire series again at full price for that kind of treatment.
