Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter is a Massive Success


Mighty No. 9, Comcept's ambitious spiritual successor to Mega Man, has just seen its Kickstarter campaign draw to a close. The finally number? Oh, just a paltry $4,046,579.

In all seriousness, that's fantastic. That number comes from 67,226 backers (or "Beckers", as they like to be called). In a single month, you've not only raised enough money to fund the game itself, but a number of extra things too! Console and handheld ports, bonuses and stages... even an entire multiplayer mode. Pat yourself on the back. You did it.

The success of the campaing means a lot. But most interesting of all, I think, is this: Mighty No. 9 is solid proof that Capcom does not understand the audience they have. The days of informally "gauging interest" should be left behind -- Mighty No. 9, essentially, is all the evidence they need.

I offer Inafune, his team, and everyone working on the game my congratulations. Bring on 2015!

  2. Let's move past bashing Capcom.

    Let's put our energy into uplifting this instead, and keep the hype going. Not for a new Megaman, but for a new game of very similar make done by people who have done this many times before, and can only do it progressively better.

    We can grouse over the past or we can look to a fun future 18 months down the line.

  6. Having watched this from the get-go... all I can say is bravo to all who pledged and made this possible. Absolutely amazing.

    I do think the Capcom-bashing from many people is a bit over the top, but hopefully this kickstarter and the coming game will breed friendly competition instead of ill-will. I'd love for Capcom see this as an initiative to come up with something fresh and new (that includes graphics) for MM9 or MX9 instead of just rehashing the same old thing.

    With that said, this kickstarter has really smashed everyone's expectations, and I believe a record or two (most commented I think). A great pleasure and ray of hope in the midst of an otherwise gloomy year for MM fans. 2015 will certainly be an awesome year!

There's a 1UP interview with Takashi Nishiyama (the creator of the original Street Fighter who was working at SNK at the time) and he said while there was competition on the business side, the development teams were friends and put things in the games as jokes and friendly jabs. Dan was one of those things.

  9. I had my doubts about this at times, but in the end, I'm glad I could contribute. This is definitely a win that our fan base sorely needed.

    Here's hoping the game lives up to our expectations. With the All-Star Dream Team developing it, I think it'll go above and beyond.

  10. And just think, this was with no advertising, no promotion budget, no warning, just a 30-day Kickstarter suddenly appearing. I still found people on the last day who didn't know the Kickstarter was happening at al! Imagine if this had been done after a 3-month informational/promo campaign?

  11. I hope some folks at Capcom get a rude awakening. So much for saying there was no interest for Megaman, and really crapping on the fans. It's funny because they were like "There wasn't enough support for Mega Man Legends 3" or something... But then this happens. Capcom keeps posting Mega Man related stuff on their site, but they really aren't doing anything with him. If it wasn't for him being in Smash Bros U and Capcom US at least doing what they can, he wouldn't be doing anything. Now if this is a success watch CRAPCOM Japan rush in to make a MM game to milk the success of this... funny tho this game has Inticreates, I doubt they'd betray Inafune and help Capcom out... and theres barely any competent staff at Capcom left to make a decent MM game. So happy, the blue bomber may be dead but his spirit lives on.

  12. Ya know, if you divide it all up, the average pledge/donation was $60.19. That is one expensive game with not a lot of buyers. :>

    Business view aside, this really was an amazing feat. I'd almost call it an experiment gone very, very right, really. It did a hell of a lot better than either my projection or the calculated projection (something like $3.1 million?) And that's pretty awesome.

    Let's hope this game isn't doesn't disappoint.

    1. It's actually 57.20$ based on the information in the KS page, I don't think the 67,226 backers include the PayPal donations. Not that it's too far behind, though.

  15. I remember when capcom said "megaman is not popular in the occident", so they canceled a lot of things, they are so blind. Lmao.

    They will say "it's only 60 000 backers, but lol, a big part of gamers are less than 18 and dont have Bank Card, so im pretty sure, it could be more than 200 000 ( there is more of young players than old). :)

    1. I doubt there are a lot of Mega Man fans too young to have a bank account. The series has been pretty much dormant except for the retro 8-bit titles this gen, which has lasted almost 9 years now.

      We'll have to see what the final sales numbers for M#9 are like. 60,000 donors is a lot for a Kickstarter campaign, but not a lot when it comes to copies of a commercial game. They'd better hope most of the potential audience isn't made up of the donors.

    2. Exactly. This basically allows them to develop the game "for free" (no venture capital). This really hasn't officially hit the market. There are a ton of people who don't even know about kickstarter, but they will surely find out about Mighty No. 9 when it pops up as a downloadable title for their console.

      Also, from what the 8-4 guys were saying, Japan really isn't into donating, so that is essentially another huge sales opportunity once the game is finished. I really believe this game will be a huge hit and will build enough capital for Comcept to continue this new series. Morn the glory days of Capcom. Look to the future for Comcept.

    The comments from people willing to throw Mega Man under the bus bugs me, though. I'd still rather have the real thing.

    1. Who the heck's trying to throw Mega Man under the bus...? Besides Capcom, I mean. Just because people are supporting this, doesn't mean they don't still love Mega Man. And if you wanna get technical, I don't think we'll ever really have the "real thing" again, since most of the people that worked on Mega Man don't work at Capcom anymore. Capcom seems to keep constantly losing all of the people that once made them great.

Please, you'll never have the real thing anymore, because Capcom chased away all of the original creators. If anything the only thing we'll have now is a pale imitation, and a cheap cash grab to cash in on the success of Mighty Number 9. Mega Man IS dead.

      Really, to all the people who keep saying things like "suck it Capcom", you're essentially saying "You abandoned Rockman so we're abandoning you". Which is fine. But are you really Rockman fans anymore...? Maybe you're fans of Inafune, who just so happened to spend the 24 years working on said franchise. It's kind of like the people who stopped liking the Green Bay Packers when Brett Farve was let go from them.

      Anyway... Not saying "don't be mad at Capcom" so much as "there's no real point". Especially since Capcom hasn't acknowledged this project in the slightest. Once the game comes out next Spring (I think it was?), if it's noteworthy, then maybe Capcom will pay attention. They're a business, after all. Not a charity. And thusfar, this project has, in fact, been a charity.

    4. I have no problems with supporting M#9. I'll be playing it myself when it launches.

      I never said Capcom putting Mega Man on ice doesn't bother me. What ALSO bothers me is the "Mega Man is dead so let's bury him and focus on M#9" sentiment that has popped up since the game was announced. Thanks for providing the perfect example, Anon 1:11.

      I suppose if you see Mega Man solely as a bunch of game mechanics with graphics and names that can be easily swapped without consequences, then M#9 is the perfect replacement. I don't. I'm not saying the game won't be good. But characters are important to me, and no matter how good not-Mega Man, not-Roll and the rest are, they're not going to take the place of the originals in my eyes. I might grow to love them on their own merits as individual characters later, if they're not just bland copies.

      Another thing that bothers me is that some commenters are so bitter and poisoned by hatred for Capcom, they bash the official merchandise and actively root for it to fail. How many posts about MM products have their been since the M#9 kickstarter began that haven't seen comments A: complaining it isn't a game B: complaining it exists or C: saying they're supporting M#9 instead. The answer is not many.

      I half suspect if Capcom did announce a new MM game tomorrow and turned out awesome, these people would hate it anyway and call it an imitation of M#9 just as a knee-jerk reaction. If this is you, ask yourself if you're really a Mega Man fan anymore.

  17. The real success of Mighty No.9 will be measured in 2015. If the game does well, Capcom will be left with two choices: Bring Rockman back or leave it in the past forever, because I doubt that Inti Creates and Comcept would be available to make a decent Rockman game.

  19. I wonder what other possible stretch goals they prepared in case of ever greater speed of project backing. In KS they told in one of the last updates "Our final new stretch goals, ever! (...Well, maybe! :)" so it seems that still had something.

  20. Eat it, Capcom! Actually, eat it to all those pansy game companies that want to play it safe and regurgitate the same few and familiar titles year after year.

    Kickstarters truly are the last salvation for old school gamers who want fun over flash. And unlike the common market consumer base, we're adults with money and we can help finance these things and make them a reality!

  21. Does anyone think that the sudden burst at the end is just people saying they'll give so and so amount, but in reality, they won't and that people just wanted the to ensure the extra stuff without paying for it...?

    I mean... why wait until the final moments? There was a crap load of time in the middle to get to this point, but money came in fast at the beginning, died down then came fast at the end...

    I really think people won't hold up their end of the bargain for the last half a million, and we'll be cut short...

      Moments after the kickstarter ended i got an email telling me that I was charged my pledge amount.

    2. They have different hairstyles for F, so I'm hoping maybe we can vote on which hairstyle, too, if she wins. I really like the F design, but not so much the default "Roll" hairstyle. I'd like one of the other hairstyles they've shown for that design.

  24. If the funding time is over i can no longer get special goodies like artbook and all that? It would be sad since I've broke lately and cold not afford a penny, but I've been saving little by little (living by yourself whiel married doesn't always leave you with lots of money), so I hope maybe I can get some of them.
