Capcom's Considering Bringing Rockman Xover Outside of Japan

In a recent interview with Game Watch, Capcom staff expressed further interest in bringing Rockman Xover overseas. They say a release in North America and Europe is not out of the question, but the team are currently focused on strengthening the Japanese version via software updates, new promotions, etc.

On the contrary, it appears Capcom actually launched Rockman Xover in Korea a few short days ago on iOS and Android without warning. So, yeah, it's probably coming our way sooner than later.

Brace yourselves.

  1. I'm going to put this as politely as possible: no thank you.

  2. Remember Svensson was the guy blocking a stateside release of Xover. With him gone, and with the Xover hate train having slowed down a little, it's no surprise they might be re-evaluating that decision. Seeing as Xover is pretty much a browser game wrapped in an app, it's certainly no difficult task to bring it over.

  3. I'm just going to say Xover is a game riddled with tons of design issues and suffers from a horrendous power creep system. For a mobage game that's suppose to be a simple time waster, it asks for way too much of your time. Grinding your EP for EXP and Skill EXP can take anywhere from 1-3 hours because the game is set up that you have to constantly reset your app for the best results (imagine doing a lottery 10-20 times with soft resets just to get what you want). And after you spend all that time grinding and leveling up your Battle Memory to max level, it's going to get outdated fast because of the power creep, making you repeat the process with a stronger Battle Memory.

For a game based on Mega Man, it doesn't use any of the source material correctly. Things like "Fire Blizzard Buffalo" and giving Battle Memories random Skills that don't reflect the character (WoodShield Style and Armored Armadillo give you Atk Up WTF!?) shows that the developers clearly don't give a crap. You also know the game is messed up when some of the strongest Battle Memories are the female characters in bathing suits. Yeah, don't plan on revisiting this game and don't recommend anyone to try it out.

  4. My question is, if the game actually comes out with an English version, will those of us who play the Japanese version be able to log into our accounts, because this is, without a doubt not, a game you'd want to start over again if you've put any amount of time into it.

  10. Fan-freaking-tastic.

I hate being the downer, but I just cannot see any good coming out of this. This is either just going to encourage Capcom to make more lazy profit games, or give new people a bad taste by giving this iOS game a try.

    *Sigh* I just give up.

  11. So, Xover is getting released overseas after all? I wish I could say I was surprised, but half of me saw this coming from a mile away. Even if I did have an iPhone, I wouldn't touch that piece of garbage with a ten-foot pole.

  12. Honestly, I'd like to see it come out if only to give it a shot.

It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but that's what the fandom of Rockman; a mix and match of fans who like/are mellow on/dislike the various series incarnations. I don't see why we can't let those that want to play the game be able to do so and those who wish to avoid it do the same.

  13. I was in favor of Rockman on Smash Bros, since it could be the rebirth of the interest of new generations for the franchise....
    ...but seriously, not this.

This game is no way in hell innovative but is profitable so, as usual, we'll see it coming soon.

  14. I pretty much predicted the day Capcom laid off most of their American staff they were the guys that realized it'd be a bad idea.

Oh well at least we can look forward to the people who've been defending it actually trying it and realizing it's pay to win. That'll be freaking hysterical!

  15. Capcom, you JUST barely breathed life back into the Megaman brand with Smash Bros. inclusion, and now you want to do this?!

This? Your "best", "newest" foot forward? This is what you want the public to take away from the series after 25 years?!

    Think!

  16. Are we really doing this dance again?

(Capcom announces Xover) NO! We don't want it! It's a sorry excuse for a Megaman game!

(Capcom says US isn't getting it) Dammit, why couldn't you people hold off on complaining?! Now we don't get to play it because of you!

(Capcom says US might be getting it) Nonono

    ReplyDelete
  17. Guys, it's a FREE game. As an anon said, are we really doing this dance again? Be god damn grateful they're considering it, be grateful we're even getting it. It may not be the best, no one is telling you to play it, no one is telling you to download it. No one is telling you to get an android phone or iOS device to play it. They are bringing it for the fans who don't think it's that bad. I don't think it's that bad at all, I think it'd be nice to get in english.

You say the fandom isn't to blame for a lot of things like capcom says, but right now you are proving their point, and to be completely honest - it disgusts me to see what a bunch of whiny little bitches you can all be. That isn't a new thought either, I tend to stray far from Mega Man forums and communities because really all I see is non-stop un-needed bitching.

While I understand everyone has an opinion, and we may not all like Xover, but there are some who do, and for the most part - it's something. So we shouldn't pull Mega Man down by saying you don't want this game, we should support it - at least it is some attention for the franchise. Most of you are adults, act like it.

    "Guys, it's a FREE game."

    Your point?

"Be god damn grateful they're considering it, be grateful we're even getting it."

We should be grateful that they're releasing a piece of garbage like that, which has zero to no real effort put into it? An official product that even fan projects and bootlegs have managed to outclass? No thanks.

"You say the fandom isn't to blame for a lot of things like capcom says, but right now you are proving their point"
And what would that be? That we should have been the ones making the game for them, as they said when Legends 3 was cancelled?

"honest - it disgusts me to see what a bunch of whiny little bitches you can all be."

Yeah, because God forbid anybody has a negative opinion about anything, right? God forbid we want something that has actual effort put into it, rather than something as half-assed as this game. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: How anybody could possibly defend this is beyond me.

    1. There's a lot more points than that you know.
If you hate Xover, that's fine, if you like it, that's fine. Am I upset and pissed about Universe, and Legends 3? Yes. I am. I still am bitter towards capcom for it.

It's just something that can at least be released. The way I see it - is we either accept it without question, or we tell capcom we don't want Mega Man by saying Xover shouldn't come over here. There are a few who want it at least. This fanbase has too many negative opinions on things that are primarily silly to get so pissy over. I saw people get mad about Universe, and quite frankly that was silly. OSS was a decent idea but Capcom blew that. Legends 3 and it's cancellation was a big mistake. Trust me, I share a lot of similar opinions and feelings, the mass port of gameboy games to the 3DS shop? I think that was silly, and unnecessary - but for those that don't have them - I can see why they'd want it. As for Xover I am aware of the hate it gets, but I am also aware that some still play and enjoy it - for the time being - it's something. While it is indeed good to call companies on their bullshit - and trust me, Xover is a lot of that, it's capcom that is the problem. They are more after milking Mega Man through products and ports rather than focusing on a new game. But the problem is they take all this negativity as "we don't want mega man" it seems. That's why I feel personally - in my opinion - that the fandom should just let this slide instead of acting the way they have been.

If people fight against Xover, they are doing more harm than good at this point. No I'm not saying "Capcom should let it slide and let them continue this kind of shit" but I am saying it should be allowed to slide because it could possibly still tell Capcom we care. As much false hope as that would be, it's still something.

Instead of being blinded by rage, it's best to take a lot of things into consideration in this kind of situation.

      Delete
    2. @Token: Uhh no. Letting Xover slide is saying we DON'T care about quality, that it's perfectly fine that Capcom treats Mega Man as simply merchandise and shovelware meant to milk the wallets out of consumers who don't know any better. If you are even remotely familiar with Xover, you would know that it's a pay to win game, read: Capcom would rather take the money of rich, irresponsible/egotistical consumers through shoddy Skinner Box traps than providing a quality title that actually deserves to share the Mega Man brand. By being a "free" player, you will either likely succumb to Capcom's ridiculous time-saving payments or find yourself among the sea of free players who only exist to a) promote the game by its userbase count, and b) satisfy the egos of pay to win players, who are most likely rich/irresponsible and could care less that they are supporting shovelware.

What happens if Xover succeeds? We aren't going to see Legends 3, or X9, or whatever dream title you are imagining, unless your dream title is Xover 2. Why? Because even though Xover is theoretically providing promotion for the brand, it's ultimately targeted towards casual gamers, NOT fans of Rockman or the genre(s) from which Rockman games hail from (which, last I checked, is considered a niche market in comparison to the vast market that is mobile apps). To say that Xover becoming successful will rejuvenate Rockman is like saying an HD-filter/online port of Darkstalkers will generate enough marketing for a Darkstalkers 4.

      Delete
    3. It's less about "we don't want people to be able to play this", and more about "if this sub-par game comes over here and doesn't make as much money (via microtransactions, in this case) as Capcom wants, chances are good they will stop bringing over Megaman games altogether, which is really not what the series needs right now".

I'm not a fan of Ace Attorney, but apparently it got stuck with "No Export for You" status after one of the later installments didn't meet Capcom's expectations over here.

(Also, rarely has a point been helped by calling people "whiny bitches" to their faces.)

      Delete
    4. There is a right and wrong way to do things and the best way is not to take up our pitch forks and torches but to remain silence. Remember this is the same company that caned mml3 because there wasn't "enough interest".

There are several outcomes to this event and the one where we become loud and vocal boils down to a few things. One Capcom ignores us and sends it over anyways. Two, they hear us and think Megaman is not wanted over in NA and they put even less effort or no effort to bring another game over. Or three they listen and Megaman raises from the dead with a brand new game.

Now being silent won't guarantee anything so what are we suppose to do? Well support what you do love. If all you do is hate, then any company will opt out to bring anything if it won't sell. If you want Xover then support it and make it happen for you. That game is not for me and instead of complaining how they are bringing over a game I don't like, I am going to focus on the game I do like. Which is the new smash game!

I'm supporting the new smash game all the way and putting my hopes on Megaman in that one. I can't wait to buy a wiiu to play it on a big screen!

So in short, if you have options of games to support then stop using all this energy to bash the one you dislike and support the one you do like. We have options now people and this isn't like a year ago where all we heard was Xover when the wounds of mml3 was still fresh. So turn that hate email and post into a support email and post. Get your opinions out there the right way to bring games that you want over to everyone.

In the end there is a right way and a wrong way to do things.

    5. @Token: Think about what's about to happen though.

The franchise is in a sh*t position. No iteration of Megaman is in a steady position for another game. Sven himself said he wanted Classic Megaman on his feet first and foremost, which is why the GB games were ported and why that's the iteration we're getting for Smash. We're slowly getting there, it's just taking a while.

Xover threatens to undo EVERY STEP WE'VE MADE. It is a horrible looking game compared to the various other free to play games with microtransactions in them on the iOS and Android markets, it has little to no actual depth in it's BM system, its BM memories and boss element types are half-assedly thrown together, it requires too much of your time to be worth it, and as you get to higher levels, the amount of pay to win is ridiculous even for a free to play game. And to top it off it's another f*cking iteration of Megaman that NOBODY ASKED FOR.

We don't want Xover. We feel Xover hurts the image of the brand more than a GB port. We're concerned for how this will affect those who have never played a Megaman game before due to the lack of effort in the actual product. We feel it's going to give people a negative outlook on Megaman, and for those who've stopped playing a while ago, it will begin the rounds of 'Megaman is dead' again.

Let it go Token. There's a reason why certain games aren't supposed to leave Japan.

      Delete
    6. Uh... I think Token makes a valid point. See, all I see is the MegaMan fanbase bitching ever since Universe and Legends 3's cancelzation.

The MegaMan fanbase have been blinded by rage ever since then. I'm not gonna say Token is right, but he does make a point.

I'm still a little upset with Capcom for doing a horrible job, but can we at least get rid of the hate train and nonstop Capcom is evil rage? I'm beginning to quit being a MegaMan fan.

Fans tried to use the 100,000 Strong and GMOTM to bring back Legends 3, but that ended in failure because the fanbase was blinded by rage I think.

The point is, we should learn to accept Xover as a MegaMan game, I still think its crappy, but we need to let go of that hatred and anger. If this ragefest keeps up, then Capcom will see that the MegaMan fanbase no longer cares about MegaMan and decided to pull the plug on the MegaMan franchise. I don't want that, and neither should you.

Want a social game that is based on a licensed property and actually put effort into making a solid solo content alongside it's social content like PvP, has very high quality art assets, and pays close detail to its source material? Marvel Avengers Alliance. Compared to it, Xover is exactly like that Flash game on newgrounds.

  25. I wish I was able to play this in the States, but everyone seems to think that this game is supposed to be on par with the other games in the franchise and not realize that this is a SOCIAL GAME.

It's really not supposed to be enjoyed solely for the "gameplay" and mainly just the social aspect of it.

And people probably didn't think that if this game DID get released Stateside, it would probably get the Megaman Franchise more recognizable and... allow Capcom to bring out more games; with, you know, all of the popularity of phone apps.

Can't really color me too surprised. Money triumphs over quality, isn't that Capcom's slogan now? Yeah, they really had me going with Smash Brothers, and I am really happy about that, but then they went ahead and decided maybe it's a good idea to release this... thing internationally? Capcom almost had it! They were so close to maybe gaining some credibility back with the Smash Brothers gig and they just had to consider releasing this trash out of Japan and into the West! :( Unfortunately, it's not too surprising and I see it happening.

Of all the cell phone and tablet games to consider getting a release, it had to be this. >.>

  29. Please understand, there's a reason why Sven himself pushed to prevent the game from being brought to the US audience. When a game series becomes an established brand - like the MegaMan series - bad games can tarnish the series name. Companies avoid failures so they can continue to leverage the brand name for better sales, merchandise, etc. I don't know who's at the wheel now that Sven's gone, but it's possible this interest in bringing Xover is guided by someone with alot less insight to the fanbase, or more interested in quick cash than the integrity of the MM series.

So I agree with the people denouncing the MM fanbase hatred. And I really appreciate the people who encourage others to respect everyone's opinion on Xover. You guys are the better half of the fanbase. However, unless you HONESTLY believe Xover will be a success in the US market, it may be in the best interest of the MegaMan name to NOT bring it over. Especially considering the brand's already-turbulent state.

After all, the game was cancelled over two years ago, and if I were to start ranting about that game and its flaws right here and now, then I'd be beating a dead horse. Still, as bad as that game was shaping up to be, Rockman Xover made it look like a masterpiece by comparison.

    @Musashi the Master:

Uh, not to be rude or anything, but is it me, or are you always switching sides? One minute, you're defending this game alongside Zerker and a few others, then you, yourself end up joining the hate crowd, and now you're back to defending it again? I don't get it.

    2. "I gave up being a MegaMan fan", "but I'm still a fan of MegaMan". Objection?

Honestly it's getting really hard to tell what the heck you're saying Musashi.

People are still going to hate Xover and voice their opinions on it, especially since news just seem to keep on coming. Yes there was a hate train on Universe, but that eventually died out when Universe itself died out. Same with Legends 3, that eventually died out too. But Xover seems to just keep coming back and making its presence known like a damn elephant in the room. I wish it would die out, but it just can't, not with the way Capcom keeps treating it like it's the best thing ever.

    3. "The fanbase rage over everything."

      1) The fanbase is incredibly diverse due to the various series, so you're stating the obvious that it's extremely hard to please everyone.
      2) There's nothing wrong with being critical to a brand that you care about. In fact, being apathetic or indifferent towards something you would normally not tolerate (by your own admission, you despise Xover) IS bad, because you disregard the potential consequences that can occur by choosing to ignore it rather than to actively reject it (consequences being, in this case, tarnishing the brand).
      3) If the fanbase is so out of place for raging about Xover, please provide a reason the fanbase shouldn't rage. Again, by your own admission, you despise Xover yourself, so the legitimacy of Xover's quality isn't even in question. Would you prefer a misrepresentation of the fanbase where only those satisfied/interested with the game post about it? Would you prefer people be dishonest about it and pretend to like it or not care?

@Dr. Jerk: I recall Musashi the Master defending Other M as a quality Metroid game. I'd advise against taking his input seriously (and yes, I'm well aware this qualifies as ad hominem).

I believe Other M sold well despite its flaws and a valid entry in the Metroid series. But not all people think like you do.

    6. "You got to learn that some people like Other M and some don't."

From our previous debate: "So yes, I can deal with you liking the game because I can't choose your opinion for you, nor do I care that you like crap. What I can't deal with is people like you trying to convince others Other M is a good game while leaving terrible arguments like "Professionals said it was good, so it must be good!" or "a bad character is better than no character!" (which clearly shows you have not done your research on the debate)."

My problem with people like you isn't that you like Other M, but that you dispute it as a quality title.

The point of bringing up the debate again isn't because I am trying to revisit the topic of Other M. Rather, our previous debate serves as a reminder that you fail to provide logical arguments to any of the points you're trying to make (hence the use of ad hominem).

"I believe Other M sold well despite its flaws and a valid entry in the Metroid series."

Actually, Other M sales were perceived poor by Nintendo, with several articles covering its "postmortem". Not that poor sales = bad game (marketing is another huge factor), but quality is a very contributing factor to sales. Given how polarizing Other M was, it's no surprise why many hardcore gamers (the target audience Metroid appeals to) shied away from it.

      Delete
    7. Other M got good scores despite it selling poorly. Point is, everyone is getting tired of you bashing Other M. And no, don't say Wikipedia doesn't count cause I seen the scores of Other M on it, it got good scores like a 35, 80 percent and more.

Did you play Other M? If not, you're hating it for no goddamn reason. Show me proof like a video walktrhough of you playing Other M and we'll see if you hate it or not.

"everyone is getting tired of you bashing Other M"

Aren't you quick to assume that you share the same stance as everyone. I actually haven't been bashing Other M much other than counter-arguing against your flawed points. Again, I only brought it up for ad hominem.

"And no, don't say Wikipedia doesn't count cause I seen the scores of Other M on it, it got good scores like a 35, 80 percent and more."

And yet there are countless videos, articles, and reviews saying otherwise? You do realize "professional reviews" are targeted towards casual consumers, so they mainly look for the surface aspects of video games like graphics and controls. On top of that, there's also a huge monetary factor in terms of maintaining good relations with Nintendo: reviewers are pretty much biased on the onset because releasing an honest and informed review would mean hurting their relationship, in turn discouraging Nintendo to offer them a pre-release copy to review and thus hurting their ability to offer the reviews in the first place.

I am not saying professional reviews are useless: for the most part, they do correlate to the majority opinion. Other M, however, is one of those obvious cases of being extremely polarizing, where professional reviews should NOT be the ones who have the final say, because they're not in the position to make those calls.

"Did you play Other M? If not, you're hating it for no goddamn reason."

Uh yes, I have. In fact, I happened to like Fusion, which is often compared to Other M and was also polarizing for being so linear (though not nearly as much as Other M). On the other hand, Fusion at least compensated with a functional plot/premise and superb atmosphere. I came into Other M with an open mind, only to come out extremely disappointed and baffled from its number of incomprehensible design choices.

"Show me proof like a video walktrhough of you playing Other M and we'll see if you hate it or not."

lolno. Why should I have to work 10 times as hard to validate an argument that the opposing side can't even defend against?

    9. Right... I owe you an apology then. Other M is good in my honest opinion, I need to respect your opinion. No hard feelings>

    10. @Musashi: Two things.

First, it did sell like 1.25 million units, which is good sales. However, Nintendo is a sane business, and does realistic expectations for games. Other M was supposed to sell a minimum of 1.5 to 2 million units. Meaning in Nintendo's eyes, Other M was a failure.

Second, while it got good scores from the big reviewers, Nintendo reviews are often slanted because if you want give a bad review to a Nintendo game, especially if it's one of the trinity(Mario, Zelda, Metroid), it has to be for a REALLY good reason. It's why the NSMB series is getting away with it. Because it's so solid gameplay-wise, has entertaining multiplayer and now an extra mode, it's impossible to give it anything below a 7.

However, Metroid Other M wasn't 8's and 9's around the board. There were some 6's and lower given out by some such as G4 and Game Informer. However, when it came to game of the year awards, many negative awards and distinctions were given to Other M for how it portrayed Samus, it's plot, the bear minimal presence of the Metroids, and the lack of a proper boss fight with the supposed reincarnated Mother Brain. I mean ffs when Phantoon, who came out of NO WHERE, has to be the final boss and not a Metroid or something related to the plot that's when you know something went wrong for sure.

  37. If it were released here in North America, I'd give it a try. It's FTP, so why not?

It's a mobile game. Even if it totally blows, it's not going to tarnish any of the main series.

But really, I'm just tired of people howling for blood every time it comes up.

    1. 'It's a mobile game. Even if it totally blows, it's not going to tarnish any of the main series.' No, it'll tarnish the reputation of the entire franchise. It's got Megaman on it, meaning yes, it will affect the entire franchise. Causuals, whom make up the mobile market, don't think the same way those that know the Megaman franchise do.

    2. No, it won't. Are you even aware of how many game series have absolutely horrible mobile games? Crappy ports and stripped-down pseudo browser games abound. Even AAA series have awful mobile games with massive casual audiences that have no idea they even exist.

If it sucks, it won't gain traction, the game will get buried in the app store and no one will care outside the hardcore fanbase.

I'm not defending Xover. I'm not for it, nor am I against it. I'm just tired of people acting like it's the worst thing that has ever happened to any game franchise anywhere.

    3. But Capcom tends to drop whole series that have ONE installment that doesn't meet expectations (or just stop exporting titles from that series in Ace Attorney's case). Street Fighter would've remained dead if not for Mr. Ono's efforts, from what I understand.

    4. Maybe, but those were major titles in the main series where Capcom had invested a lot of time and effort creating and marketing them, not cheap to produce FTP mobile games.

  38. Sad part is Universe was a great game. And Legends was limited only by the platform it was intended for release, the same platform that only a week after cancellation dropped it's price by $50. That wasn't enough either, as we discover the hiatus and eventual canning of Rockman Online, a game sure to churn capcom's butter and make a profit across the world. The nail on the coffin only came when we were handed this info right along with a nifty fps that screamed metroid prime with Megaman style. Capcom can go ahead with what they do, releasing Ult SF4 (because it's hardly any real new stuff, same damn engine and new tweaks w/SFxT's extras)waste time keeping operation raccoon city online (No more a sham of the RE franchise than 6 mind you)And still try making up for what they lost because of PSN's nearly 2 month blackout (not their fault surprisingly)... My friends, the execs aren't fit for duty, we don't just howl for blood, we roar for the restructure of their Company.

    1. Two small problems there Bek.

Rockman Online would've been a Korean exclusive. And that means unless the game was super successful there, it wouldn't have come worldwide. Don't make a big deal out of something we may never have seen. Both Neowiz' restruction and CoJ are to blame here.

Maverick Hunter... No. It was dead since 2010. And I'm f*cking glad. 'Oh the studio has guys who made Metroid Prime and DKCR!' Ya no. Some of them left after 1, which was where Nintendo had to hold their hand due to lack of coordination and progress. The others left after 3. Meaning they didn't help with Donkey Kong and they didn't work on Mario Kart 7 tracks, meaning they are no where near as skilled or experienced as the true Retro Studios. All they've worked on is the Metal Gear Solid HD collection for the PS Vita.

Also Metroid Prime and Megaman should not mix. This reminded me of a single game. Bomberman: Act Zero. And we all know how that went. If anything, the 'shooter' we need in the franchise should've been LEGENDS, not a REBOOT of X that threatened the entire continuity of the series and tear the fanbase apart even more.

    2. *I see your point and after hearing about the prime original team leaving that blows... As for online someone should've moved to push for an international release which of course is more likely outside of our power and jurisdiction -_- regardless it's a shame that we lost the three games that would've mattered Legends 3, Universe and Online :( ah well. btw have you seen the vids for MH?

  39. The ONLY good point I can see on this is that some characters will finally gain official English names. But if it gets a bad localization team... nevermind that.

  40. It wouldn't be our fandom if this didn't start a long string of debates.

My view? I don't want this here, because if it /does/ succeed, then this is likely the direction megs is going. Don't be satisified with whatever, demand the quality that the blue bomber deserves. If the game does come over, DO NOT GET IT. This could have been so much better than it was if it had, you know, a control scheme that was actually intuitive for the platform.

Any touchscreen game with buttons should be boycotted for the sheer principle of it. It's like releasing the next great Elder Scrolls or Call of Duty... exclusively for Kinect. But you play it by hitting buttons on the screen with your hand movements. Not only is it on something most gamers look down on, but its controls make no sense for what it was designed for, and really are more annoying than anything.

  45. ....Well I still want to play the game... and even better if its in English since I still cant be bothered getting a Japanese itunes/google play or whatever account.
I wonder if the Japanese code that came with the Rockman Holic album would work on the English version LOL.
