Revamped Rockman X Blasting To iOS This Month (Updated)

Capcom Japan has announced that the original Rockman X will be available on iPhone later this month. The "powered up" iOS version will sport optimized graphics, touch controls and an all-new ranking mode via Game Center.



Pricing and release date specifics are forthcoming. What's more, there's no news yet on a western release. The game is currently penned exclusively for Japan. Naturally, I'll update you on the situation should word surface. UPDATE: According to Andrisang, the game will have 80 challenges to conquer. It remains to be seen if this is a new game mode or achievements.

Interesting news, to say nothing of unexpected. But to be perfectly honest, I shudder at the thought of playing X1 with a touch-based UI. It's one of those games that pretty much requires force-feedback. Throwing your controller in frustration is one thing, but throwing your phone is far worse! Let's just hope things are a bit more touch-friendly than the less-than-stellar iOS port of Mega Man 2.

Graphically, things look pretty spiffy. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something seems a little... off?

  4. The graphics do look off, except the the mugshots that were ripped straight from the PSP game. I think what happened here, was that they tried to do what was already done with Rockman Puzzle Battle. Unfortunately, there's a difference.

    What's the difference? You can easily update a game's visuals in this style, when your base material is from an 8-bit console. Not so much with a 16-bit console, where we've seen things that have almost reached 32-bit quality(Rockman & Forte). You would need to add a lot more coloring, or else, it will look bland, and can even end up bringing out some flaws in the design that weren't noticable before.


    In short, the graphics look simplified. And when you consider that this was done to a game in the X series, it really shouldn't have been simplified like this at all, in my opinion.

  8. X's proportions are a shade off, especially the "firing" sprite. And it almost looks like more SD styling, lost the grit of the SNES sprites and colors.

    But, hey, it could've been much worse! This is pretty fair for an iOS conversion, especially considering that the sprites are much the same. Which is good for hitboxes and the like.

  11. Graphics look great but why couldn't they have ported this to the 3DS or the PSP? Capcom, you wasted ANOTHER opportunity to make a ton of money (I'm looking at you, missed opportunity to release Maverick Hunter X and Mega Man: Powered up on the PS2 and Gamecube back when it was first announced).

  15. Capcom.. Stop making stupid iphone games and bring Maverick Hunter X 2 and Mega Man: Powered up 2 to 3DS or better yet.. Bring both sequels to 3DS!

  16. indeed something looks QUITE off.

    the stage select screen mostly. all four corners show the mega man x symbol, instead of having options for showing info on the mavericks. also, all maverick pics have been replaced with their pics from maverick hunter X. the rest of the graphics look normal... just alot smoother for some reason.

  17. I really like the spritery here; it's really detailed and colorful. I couldn't picture playing this on a touch screen, though, as boss fights must be a nightmare. An "HD-Remixed" port of this would be nice for WiiWare/XBLA/PSN, or at the very least they could port MHX/MMPU to updated consoles.

    I was always upset that those games never got a PS2 port, as I'm sure they would have sold a little better on that system. Same goes for a lot of other PSP titles like Shin Budokai and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max.

  18. Honestly, I'm really hyped for this. I know it'll show up on Installous soon after it comes out in Japan, so it'll be all good for jailbroken iOS users. :)


    I also kinda like the new graphics. If it were just a straight-up port with the old SNES graphics, I would have actually been angry. But since it's all redrawn stuff with GameCenter support, I see no reason to be disappointed.



    Sure, it's still X1, but it's a half-remade X1. Something at least.
    Maybe this is a sort step towards Capcom fixing their stance on Rockman?

    I'm buying this game. It doesn't matter what I think of it. It'll be impossible to play on a touchscreen, but that doesn't matter.

    Capcom is investing in an X game to see if it sells. If it makes money, they will invest in more down the road. If it doesn't, there will be nothing after and they will shy away from iOS too.

    Why was Irregular Hunter X made? Powered up? Mega Man 9? ZX? because they calculated that enough people would buy that they would make enough of a profit for production to be worthwhile.

    Why weren't Universe, Legends 3, X9 made? guess what? they calculated that they could make enough of a profit for it to be worthwhile, if at all.

    Capcom isn't really big on downloadable titles. I'm going to buy it to tell capcom that downloadable titles, and Mega Man ones especially, are viable in the only language that a corporation knows. Money.

    I hope some of you will too, so that other great things will get a chance to be made. Those of you complaining are only preventing yourselves from getting anything at all.

  20. lol, i see what you mean protodude. they look like they've ran the original sprites through scale2x way too many times. other than that, they don't look too bad really.

    but i don't understand why they had to use the pics of the mavericks from MHX. i mean, no offence, i like it better than the SNES version of the game (and coming from me, that's saying alot). but if they're trying to emulate the SNES version, why not just update it's graphics, instead of using the redesigns?

    i'd say it's blasphemous, but... it actually looks quite good.

    as for releasing what i'll call Mega Man X HD (compared to the snes it is), i would guess they're testing out the iphone market for X based games in america. why not? sure, the iphone isn't made for games like this, but who knows what we'll see, if this works out right?

  22. What probably looks off in the graphics is the inconsistencies between enhanced and upscaled. Parts looks like they actually redrew it, bule others look like they just used a sprite filter. And then the random shinies re a bit weird. Sometimes they use proper shading, and sometimes they just use 2 or 3 tones.

    PS: This better support a bluetooth controller.

  23. I like the fact that they are updating the graphics, thus trying to offer a fresh experience. It actually shows *gasp* EFFORT, which is something Capcom has been accused of lacking lately.

  25. I'll stick to Maverick Hunter X, (no matter how laggy it is,) if I want an updated version of MMX. At least with that I can challenge myself by fooling around with the gimmicky Vile for a while. (Dashless bastard....)

The controls shouldn't be a problem - recently a slew of iPhone snap-on controller devices have hit the market from 3rd party developers and they pretty much solve the issues with controls, which makes games like MM2 not an issue. Of course, since MM2 was pretty much a direct port, why waste the money when you can just use emulation software on the phone to play it?

    This does have different graphics, but they seem a bit cartoonish whereas I always felt the X series and after were a bit darker. :/

  27. I saw an article a while back on automatically optimizing 16-bit sprites (used a dolphin from Mario World), and the results looks pretty much exactly like this. The shading looks a bit goofy, so I can't help but wonder if they ran all the sprites through an optimizer, and only tweaked the results minimally.

    It looks nice in general, but since it's on a touch platform, I couldn't care less. Another dumb appeasement offering from Capcom.
