April Fools - Roll DLC Once Planned For Mega Man 9?

An enigmatic tipster under the guise of "Ghost Chili" contacted both myself and The Mega Man Network earlier today with intentions of leaking top secret Mega Man 9 information. What kind of information? To my surprise, Ghost Chili bestowed upon me assets which revealed that, in early 2009, Roll was scheduled to be a fully playable character in the game, unlocked through a bonus DLC pack. Of course, the pack was never released publicly, but as proof of its existence, Ghost Chili forwarded me the following confidential press release:

Capcom Releases Bonus Mega Man 9 Downloadable Content Pack

SAN MATEO, CA — January, 3rd 2009 —And you thought that Proto Man was the last content pack that we had in store for you for Mega Man 9! Capcom is proud to announce that Mega Man’s sister, Roll, is finally getting the spotlight as a new downloadable character in Mega Man 9. She will be joining Proto Man and Mega Man in their fight against Doctor Wiley using her unique housekeeping abilities!

Roll Content Pack - Play the game as Roll. Some of Roll’s abilities may differ vastly from Mega Man and Proto Man’s. As a housekeeping robot, Roll has the Mop Up ability, Dusting ability, and a super water bucket move that helps her clean house! However, Roll also can only sustain one hit in damage and has triple bounce back when she is hit. There is no story for Roll ands she is not compatible with Rankings or Challenges. (200 Wii Points)

About Mega Man 9

At the 2008 E3 Media and Business Summit, Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, announced Mega Man 9™ for Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Nintendo WiiWare™, and PLAYSTATION® Network. The original 2D classic Mega Man returns, bringing the series back to its core with retro-action platform gameplay and NES-inspired old school graphics. Relive the Mega Man experience with maniacally themed environments, a host of power-ups, and classically inspired bosses, each with their own unique weapons and weaknesses.

Mega Man 9 is a continuation of the original Mega Man series and will feature the classic gameplay fans know and love focusing on defeating bosses and acquiring a diverse arsenal of weapons. Mega Man 9 features over a dozen new challenging levels, a horde of new enemies with designs directed by Keiji Inafune, the original Mega Man character designer, online leader boards and a gamerscore achievements system.

In the year 200X, as the advanced science of the era has created industrial robots that co-exist with humans. However, an evil genius, Dr. Wily, plots for world domination and creates his own robot army to take over mankind. Luckily for humanity, Dr. Light outfits one of his domestic robots “Rock” to fight Dr. Wily’s creations. Mega Man is born.

Set after the events of Mega Man 8, multiple riots have sprung up all over the world. Whilst many people suspect that this is another plot from Dr. Wily, Dr. Light is stunned to recognize that some of the robots rioting on the TV screen are his own creations. Even more stunning, Dr. Wily appears on television to proclaim that Dr. Light is the evil mastermind behind these latest catastrophic incidents and it’s up to Mega Man to clear his creator’s name!

  5. They sure have gotten lazy, last year it were fake 16-bit X9 screens and the year before that an entire new ZX website.
And now some screens of an existing game with an existing sprite, a lame backstory and an email that looks as believable as a nigerian prince offering to share his wealth with you.
    Bad try, imo

  10. This is an obvious April Fool's joke. If not, then maybe THIS is the so-called "undiscovered secret" that Seth Killian's been going on about.

  11. - April fools, no doubt 'dude. :)

  12. In the third picture, Roll should be in the center of the screen...

  14. LOL@The pic on the right where you can still see Mega Man's feet on the center block, while Roll stands on a block you're supposed to fall through.

You know what would be awesome, though? If Capcom Unity posted this on later admitting that this was the MM9 secret or something. That would fool way more people, for a day or so.

  15. Nice try, didn't believe it for a second.

  16. Would've been more believable if Roll's jumping sprite wasn't an edit of Megaman's.
And if it weren't for that whole 1 hit of damage thing... Capcom's cruel but not THAT cruel.

  17. @HardMAN

That's not cool to say fake and "gay", man! You are obviously a homophobic.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Fake, yeah. Gay? I'm not sure, HardMAN. As far as I can tell, there isn't anything actually homosexual about this April Fools joke. I haven't once thought about same-sex relationships while looking at this joke.

Oh, did you mean "dumb?" Then say "dumb," because "gay" doesn't mean the same thing.

But anyway... cute April Fools joke. :P

  19. Not an AF joke, folks. This is the real deal. I'm risking my job here trying to bring you this info, but you treat my efforts like a joke.

As a fan of Roll, I was pretty peeved the higher ups chose to wait on this. Now, they're talking about scrapping the DLC entirely. In retaliation, I give you this. The secret is out!

  20. In the third screen Roll's too far off on the side, she should be more center.

    ie. April Foooools!~

  21. Maybe it was real?

  22. further evidence... mega man 9 OST had a track called "staff ROLL"
    what is that?! roll's theme?!

  23. @AsianSteev:

No, that theme has nothing to do with Roll. That's just the theme song that plays during the credits.

  24. Fake or not someone took the time to do this. Seriously people, lighten up. I got a chuckle out of it while it lasted.

  25. Honestly fake Duo DLC Screens for MM10 would have been better imo.

  26. @KrazyMonkey you don't get jokes, do you?

  27. @AsianSteev:

I just couldn't tell whether or not you were serious, that's all.

  28. Fake and gay!!!

    Lol someone watches RWJ

    ReplyDelete
  29. This would've been more convincing if you'd somehow gotten ahold of the sprites from the second version of Rockman Mobile. XP

  30. this is onbiously a fake, the screens are the same that were first revealed when megaman 9 was annouynced, the proof is that roll isnt at the center of the screen in concrete man stage
