Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare (X6 Fan Remake) Demo Now Available

In case you missed it, the first batch demo of Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare is now available to download from SFGHQ

Developed by Cat Yard Games, Viral Nightmare is a reworked and reimagined take on Mega Man X6 that significantly enhances and expands the original game. It introduces a fully overhauled Nightmare Soul system, mix-and-match Armor parts, redesigned stages (with Blaze Heatnix’s stage standing out as an big improvement -- seriously), new story elements, and more.

The Batch 1 demo features five playable stages, four Armor Parts to collect, and 17 swappable parts to experiment with. There's enough content here to get a feel for the concept, which feels genuinely promising. Even if you’re perfectly happy with X6 as it is, this is absolutely worth checking out.

Quick heads up: if you’re planning to use a controller, make sure to launch the demo directly from your Steam Library. There’s currently a small issue where the controller won’t be detected if you run the standalone executable. Beyond that, enjoy!

Mega Man X6 Fan-Remake in the Works by Cat Yard Games

Mega Man X6 may not be everyone’s first pick, but it definitely has a committed fanbase, and plenty of people have tried to polish it over the years through patches and mods. Still, we really haven’t seen anything quite like this.

Enter Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare. Developed by Cat Yard Games, it’s a full-on remake of X6 built in GameMaker Studio 2. Development only really ramped up in August, but the project is already making strong progress toward not just refining X6, but reimagining it.

As explained in the latest overview video, the armor system has been rebuilt from the ground up with mix-and-match loadouts, new armor abilities, purchasable Parts using Nightmare Souls (including brand-new ones), an updated Hunter Rank system, and even fresh story beats. Even if you’re not an X6 fan, there’s a lot of neat potential here.

For more info, progress updates, or just a place to chat about the project, check out Cat Yard Games’ official Discord.

Mega Man Legends PC Port Gets Unofficial Repack, Playable on Modern Hardware

Where Capcom slacks, fans are more than happy to pick up the slack. That old adage rings true today with news that the 2001 PC port of Mega Man Legends has been repackaged and fixed to run on modern machines thanks to KuroRaiden

With the help of DxWrapper, he’s created a build that works on Windows 10 and 11 while also resolving long-standing compatibility issues. The update eliminates forced auto-fullscreen and, by including the “Unfinished Business” patch, replaces the port’s low-quality audio files with high-quality WAVs sourced from the original PlayStation release. The repack also adds Xinput-to-Dinput support.

As for Steam Deck compatibility, KuroRaiden notes that it’s doable, though it may require tinkering with GE-Proton and other Wine layers.

Until an official re-release surfaces on something like GOG, this is a nice hassle-free option. Download it here!

KuroRaiden is available on Twitter and Bluesky for support and troubleshooting. Let him know if you run into any issues!

Fan-Mod Restores Street Fighter V Content to Mega Man X DiVE Offline

When Mega Man X DiVE Offline launched in 2023, it stripped away crossover content from the original online version. One of the biggest omissions was the Street Fighter V collaboration, which introduced Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma as playable characters along with 18 themed cards tied to the event.

Thanks to the Derivative Works team, a new mod brings the Street Fighter V collaboration back to the Steam version of Mega Man X DiVE Offline. It’s available on Nexusmods, complete with setup instructions. After installation, players can visit the Collab Character Store to obtain Memory Fragments for Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma to unlock the fighters.

If you run into any issues or just want to check out Derivative Works' other X DiVE mods, hit them up on Discord!

The Complete List of Rockman Garage Kits at Summer Wonder Festival 2025

Wonder Festival returned over the weekend for its annual summer event, bringing a fresh batch of Rockman garage kits. For the uninitiated, WonderFest is a Japan-based event where creators obtain one-day licenses to sell copyrighted fan works—mainly garage kits. Due to Japan’s copyright laws, these are sold in person only, though they often surface on the secondary market for a hefty pile of zenny. A few kits returned from the 2025 Winter show (which you can check out here), but there were some exciting new offerings too. Let’s take a look at what was up for grabs!

Mega Man X is the Theme of Super MAGFest 2026

Super MAGFest, the annual Maryland-based convention celebrating video game music and culture, has announced that its 2026 event will be themed around Mega Man X. The theme will set the tone for the entire show, shaping everything from cosplay and merchandise to the lineup of musical guests and featured artists.

The announcement trailer above offers a first look at the Mega Man X-inspired “lore,” which will continue to unfold over the coming weeks and months. The trailer’s music was composed by our friend RRThiel, whose deep appreciation for Mega Man shines through every note.

MAGFest has long been a gathering spot for Mega Man fans to attend panels, cosplay, and connect with one another—so if you’ve never been, this might be the one to catch. Super MAGFest 2026 will run from January 8th to 11th. More details are available from the event's official website.

Mega Man: The Wily Wars Mod Lets You Play as Roll

There's a grocery list of fan-demands for things they'd like to see more of in Mega Man, with one of the most popular being more opportunities to play as Roll. Not one to wait for Capcom to answer the question, a new mod by Zynk Oxhyde is out that allows you to play as Roll in Mega Man: The Wily Wars

This isn't just a simple sprite swap hack—cutscenes and titles have been reworked and renamed to highlight Roll's role, complete with fun additions like the Tango Coil replacing the Rush Coil. The mod comes in three variations featuring Roll's outfits from Mega Man 1, Mega Man 8, and Mega Man 11.

You can download the mod from Zynk's Ko-fi page here, and it's available in multiple languages!

Thanks for the tip, J. Collins!

Fan-Mod Adds Blade Armor X to Mega Man X DiVE Offline

Even though Capcom won't support Mega Man X DiVE Offline with new content, fans have kept the momentum going. The Derivative Works team, fresh off their additions of Model A Grey and Ashe, is back with a new mod that brings Blade Armor X from Mega Man X6 into the game as a fully playable character.

Originally released to commemorate X6's 23rd anniversary, the mod has now been updated for even greater authenticity to its original design. You can download it from Nexusmods—just be sure to follow the instructions carefully and install all the necessary plugins. Once you're all set up, you can unlock Blade Armor X by purchasing the required Memory Fragments from the Custom Tab Store.

Who they’ll tackle next is anyone’s guess, but one thing’s for sure—the X DiVE mod scene is far from slowing down!

Mega Man World 4 DX Colorization Hack Now Available

I’ve been wanting to cover the "DX" series of colorization patches for a while, but due to an agreement with the powers that be, I can’t cover fan-mods for games that are newly released (or re-released) until a certain amount of time has passed. With the Game Boy Mega Man games now available on Nintendo Switch Online, that window has finally closed. I’m happy to report that the Mega Man World 4 DX colorization project is complete and ready for download!

The patch, created by Marc Robledo and Kensu Williams, delivers a full colorization of Game Boy Mega Man 4, aligning its presentation more closely with the NES version. Additionally, it includes some quality-of-life improvements, such as an NES-style pause menu, the elimination of slowdown, and a toggle option for the Charge Shot recoil.

You can download the patch from Marc's site here. While you're at it, be sure to check out the DX patches for Game Boy Mega Man 3 and 5!

Updated Version of Mega Man Soccer Restoration Patch Now Available

In 2018, "Q" developed a patch that restored Mega Man Soccer's cut endings for Championship and Tournament Mode, added the option to play as Dr. Wily from the player select menu, and introduced other features. However, one of the patch’s enhancements—the ability to set the number of Special Shots and timer up to 99—unintentionally increased Mega Man's speed stats, throwing off the game’s balance beyond Capcom's original design.

Since new patches can no longer be uploaded to ROMHacking, where the original file was hosted, "Q" has provided us with a brand-new, updated version. This latest patch removes the Special Shots and timer settings, restoring the game’s balance as Capcom intended, while retaining the restored endings and playable Dr. Wily. It’s now the most definitive version of Mega Man Soccer to date. You can download the patch here.

Notably, a prototype build of Mega Man Soccer with four-player multitap functionality was recently dumped. Although "Q" isn’t equipped to implement this feature into the final game, he hopes someone may one day incorporate it into his patch.

Development on Mega Man X8 16-Bit Fan-Game is Complete

After two and a half years of development, AlyssonDaPaz's 16-bit Mega Man X8 "demake" is finally complete and available to play.

The demake, as previously reported, recreates X8 in the style of the Super Nintendo trilogy, while incorporating modern quality-of-life improvements such as widescreen support and 60 FPS gameplay. All of the original game’s stages are included, with some staying faithful to the original while others—like the Ride Chaser stages—have been completely reimagined. The Chip shop from the original game has been removed; instead, items are now hidden throughout the stages and can be used immediately upon discovery. There's some other updates too, like the addition of the Special Weapon radial from Mega Man 11, which allows you to quickly switch weapons at any time.

It's important to note that X is the only playable character. Since AlyssonDaPaz developed the game solo, the scope was deliberately limited to avoid lengthy delays. Nevertheless, X8 fans should be satisfied with the final result! You can download it right here. Enjoy!

Fan-Mod Adds Model A Grey and Ashe to Mega Man X DiVE Offline

To celebrate the 17th anniversary of Mega Man ZX Advent, the team at RDX Derivative Works has created an new mod featuring Mega Man Model A Grey and Ashe! The pair were noticeably absent from the Taiwan version of Mega Man X DiVE during the first ZX Advent event, but now you can play as both of them in the Offline Steam version.

Once you've watched the mod in action in the trailer above, head over to NexusMods for the download. Make sure to carefully follow the instructions and install all the necessary plugins. Once that's done, you can unlock the dynamic duo from the "ZXA Special Supply Box" or Memory fragments under the Custom Tab Store.

Thanks to Jo Li KMC for the tip!
