The long-in-development live action Mega Man movie has received a rare update, though not a definitive one. Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, who was reportedly attached to the project, recently responded to a fan asking whether the script was still moving forward or had been quietly cancelled.
“Don’t know if it has been canceled or not but it’s definitely not on my dance card anymore,” Tomlin said. “I wrote a fun set of drafts and then I believe another writer came on some years later. Hope it gets made, there was a really emotional and surprising way in.”
“Hollywood is sort of making a shift from being comic book obsessed to video game obsessed so I wouldn’t be surprised if it sees the light of day in some form,” Tomlin added, “but after so much time gone by, it’s unlikely I’ll have anything to do with it.”
Tomlin was also asked whether the film was ever intended to mix concepts from Battle Network, Mega Man X, and the classic series. According to him, that was not the case for his version.
“Mostly playing with elements of the first three games when I was working on it,” Tomlin said.
The live action Mega Man movie was officially announced by Capcom in 2018, with Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman attached to write and direct. Tomlin was later brought on to work on the script in 2020, and the project was subsequently reported to be in development at Netflix. Since then, however, official updates have been few and far between.
So, for now, the movie’s status remains unclear. It hasn't been publicly cancelled, but Tomlin’s comments make it clear that his version of the project is no longer moving forward with him attached.
Honestly don't think a live-action movie would suit Mega Man. An animated movie definitely would work though. Hopefully if/when it comes out its good either way. Would've loved to have seen Tomlin's vision though.

DeleteI agree that animation is the way to go. I'd love a full anime style movie but these days there's more money in 3D animation so that's probably more realistic of an expectation. Either way, I would hope that they at least stick to honoring the franchise instead of trying to drive up sales with cheesy celebrity cameos.

DeleteI can see it now. rock is a cleaning bot who wants to make his family proud, and is pretty darn competent at his work as a lab assistant. but wily comes and starts taking over, happening to kidnap protoman. so rock suits up as mega man and goes on a quest to save his brother, while roll goes with him to save the entire world.
Deleteas mega man, he's pretty incompetent and is the show's punching bag. he fights guts man who is voiced by seth rogan and spends most of the time getting beat up while roll and cossack watch. he eventually does win using his most emasculating weapon, top spin, as he piorettes throught he air and beats gutsman with ballet.
he recruits the cossack army to help him save protoman and roll to save the world. wily takes out the entire cossack army and kidnaps roll and mega man and seth rogan gutsman barely make it. but they go and woop wily army butt, just the two of them as roll turns the table on wily and defeats him while being captured. roll also frees everyone who was captured, except protoman who ends up falling into a spike pit.
mega man happens to find the super adapter, but ends up not really knowing how to use it and just happens to bumble his way into saving protoman in the last second. wily for some reason directs his fury at mega man and sends a giant bombman after him. mega man leads bombman to lights lab where wily starts wreaking havok and blowing things up in the city. mega man cowers in fear as gutsman and roll battle wily in his wily machine. guts man gets beat to an inch of his life while roll gets captured again and help prisoner by some mets.
mega man finds his blue balls and faces wily, only to get horribly beaten. roll escapes capture and beats up metal man and soccer kicks him to mega man. wily unleashes a blast at megaman only for protoman to finally be helpful and block it with his shield, allowing mega man to get to the defeated metal man and get metal blades, defeat the wily machine, and act like he was the hero of the movie.
The End.
oh, and roll will be voiced by chris pratt, but he'll work really hard to make her sound almost like she's not star lord

DeleteNot bad. I think Rock should be even more incompetent and Roll more badass though. Also Bass should be in a stinger, only for him to show up in the last 10 minutes of the sequel and get beaten by Kalinka in Rush Marine.

DeleteI'm guessing they wanted it to look like there was a real sense of danger. They could have just used the Guts Dozer for that though, couldn't they? It's way bigger than Guts Man and Bomb Man.
DeleteFunny, I was just thinking about this movie and it's whereabouts last week... It's probably seen it's fair share of rewrites at this point, if it is ever to be released in any form someday.

DeleteIt would be fine to have an animated film made by Studio Trigger instead, we need a decent anime adaptation instead a live-action one. No more diversity, and I am really tired of forced color-blind casting and raceswapping by mainstream corporate film companies.
ReplyDeleteWhy do people only ever elevate Trigger when talking about wanting more from the Japanese perspective again? Is it just because they made a show about scantily clad teenagers fighting? I guess they *do* have more experience adapting western works, with Cyberpunk and that Star Wars Visions episode (even though Mega Man is purely Japanese…).
DeleteAt least Transformers makes more sense, because many members of Trigger are obvious TF fans. They wanted their Gridman anime to be Transformers so bad.
@Jark Spore Yeah. I want a decent anime TV series adaptation too, we know the Mega Man X series has hot chicks which they fit better for a Trigger anime adaptation.

ReplyDeletebecause studio trigger is peak when it comes to animation. they've done awesome stuff over the years and their fight scenes are just amazing!
also, it's not like studio trigger doesn't have experience with mega man. the founder of studio trigger who was responsible for guran lagann also directed the namco x capcom opening featuring our walnutt boy.

it'll probably be passable at best cringe worthy at worst.
I feel like video games still struggle to have full confidence in film adaptations unlike other mediums. They still often feel like theyre slightly ashamed that they have to ask the audience to care about about the world being presented.
(Its getting better but i feel as though even it's own fans struggles to accept it as a medium of art)
If the people making game movies *and* the audience(?) for game movies are both uninterested in the very idea, then maybe it’s just not a good idea.
DeleteSorry I worded it kinda weird, I mean more if in the sense that Hollywood tends to sand off any precived audience filters. Not a lack of interest. Video games have some interesting challenges when it comes to adaptations.
