Mega Man Fully Charged Removed From Cartoon Network's Schedule

When it was first announced that Mega Man Fully Charged would be airing on Cartoon Network, we pretty much unanimously arrived at the same conclusion: CN would inevitably send it out to die. And so here we are... maybe.

According to recent listings from both Cartoon Network schedule archive and TV Passport, Mega Man Fully Charged has been removed from its usual 6:30am EST timeslot on Sundays to... nowhere. No reschedule, no "mid-season" break announcement – it's just gone.

Fortunately you can still watch episodes online (new episodes are still coming out) and on-demand via US cable providers. But for all you folks who eagerly wake at the crack of Sunday's dawn for new episodes, well, I'm sorry to say it's not looking too hot. From little-to-no marketing to an early morning death slot, Cartoon Network knew exactly what they wanted to do with Fully Charged from the get-go. Sad but not unexpected.

Now, does this mean the show is dead dead? Pending official word from DHX and Cartoon Network, it's hard to say. However, according to a tipster over at The Mega Man Network, the show could very well live on through Boomerang. With reruns currently airing on Boomerang since August, the possibility certainly exists. Hey, it worked for Sonic Boom.

As for the rest of the world, Fully Charged just started airing in Canada and will be heading to the UK shortly. Hopefully it'll stick around there for a little while. But all in all, I'm not feeling too confident here, guys.

We'll see what happens.

  1. And so we arrive at the limp end we all saw coming.

Goodbye Megaman Fully Charged, I'm sure the few fans you got will miss you--I certainly will not.

  2. Most of us could see this a mile away it just not megaman at all. just some weird imitation that is all and badly done one aimed at the wrong audience. IF they wanted a series to actually garner view and bring in the fans of the series they should gone with adapting the rest of the x series to anime form like what they did with day of sigma ova almost a decade ago. That would have made more sense and looked better then what is essentially just another variant of ben ten that looks worse. The series has a older fan base so yeah.

Was dead on arrival not sure why they even wasted money on this justa bad business decision imo

    1. So much this. I've literally been preaching to everyone I know about how an actual Megaman X anime would be great but all and everything we have is classic, classic and more classic megaman. Seriously, why? While I appreciate what Archie Comics have done with the classic arc, they took creative liberties in order to expand the stories and characters. Whilst the X series inherently have so much more going for it. Plus, with current real life technology slowly advancing towards AI, Megaman X's featuring a whole new Reploid race would surely be relatable.

At this point it's wishful thinking, but I certainly hope I get to see a MegaMan X anime before I'm dead. And I'm not even close to being old by any means.

    2. It's not the show itself that's the problem here. It's CN's treatment of it and other third-party licenses that's at issue here.

Mega Man Fully Charged is no masterpiece, but it's far from being out and out terrible. Problem is that it's short run-time ruins a lot of it's narrative potential.

    3. I would love an X anime. Provided it doesn't air on CN.

      Delete
    4. I'd love to see a Classic series done proper, but I could definitely see the appeal of an X series adaptation as well.

If nothing else than for the sake of attempting to salvage the storytelling of that series.

    5. Spare my the "aimed at the wrong audience" crap. The point of it was to make a show to help gain new fans for the franchise, not pander solely to the 20/30 something's crowd.
And don't sit there and lie that even if this was the dream X anime that you wanted, you would regularly watch it at 6:30am on a Sunday. Nobody is going to watch ANYTHING on such a poor timeslot. And anything that isn't, currently, Teen Titans Go, Cartoon Networks sets it up for automatic failure.

    6. They did aim it at the wrong audience.

Also according to this discussion, this show debuted with the lowest ratings, even for that time slot, of the past few years at least.

  3. Is anyone actually surprised by this? Cartoon Network can barely seem to care about more than a handful of shows that they own outright, and they've done this with previous acquired shows like Sonic Boom and the last Transformers cartoon that aired on CN.

    1. I specifically remember saying that this was a bad move to repair the brand.
Many of us knew this was a mistake.
Mega Man does NOT need ANOTHER canon. We have enough already.

Capcom isn't Marvel, DC or Disney. They don't have the recognition or staying power to have a dozen different interpretations of the same character outside of a small core fan base, which can't sustain such fervor.

      Delete
    2. That's what happens when a brand is constantly mismanaged.

    3. Shrap, I disagree. The exe subfranchise had a decent following in Japan and was popular enough to last six whole main series games (with the sixth one providing a proper conclusion no less). The only reason it failed in the west is because everyone dismissed it as a Pokemon knockoff even though that's not even close to what it actually was (I for one blame the two version thing that happened from the third game onward, especially because it did fairly well in the west earlier on, at least good enough to get a dub of Axess and the games were all translated in the end except 4.5 which wasn't due to the toyline's failure). Plus it was enough to get a sort of sequel spinoff in Ryusei/Star Force. I'm honestly not sure why Ryusei/Star Force ultimately failed in Japan though.

I'm also honestly not sure what happened to the Zero and ZX sub-franchises. I mean considering the fanbase's undue over-infatuation with Inafune, you'd think they'd latch on to his ideal Mega Man purely out of loyalty. Or maybe we really should have seen the disaster of Mighty No. 9 and Red Ash coming a mile away? IDK, I have no clue what the fanbase even thinks of Zero and ZX.

      Delete
    4. The Zero series did pretty well for itself, to the point where all four games were localized in the West and the fourth only came about due to Capcom wanting to milk more money out of it against Inti Create's wishes. The ZX titles are also highly-regarded, in some circles even more than the Zero series for better difficulty balancing and all the playstyles that were available, but they came out during the height of Mega Man fatigue, when most people began to ignore the series that weren't Classic.

      Delete
    5. @Mattwo

I don't know about the west specifically, but both Battle Network and the Zero series were usually listed in Capcom's financial reports as having "strong sales" whatever that means.

ZX nobody knew about and sold real poorly though.

      Delete
    6. @Mattwo: I agree the two versions thing should have never been imitated and adopted by Mega Man because it is clearly a rippoff as in selling tactic, but the logic that somehow that makes EXE a Pokemon clone is beyond retarded.

That's like saying Pokemon is a Tetris clone because it's a handheld video game that uses a cart. BTW Pokemon is a direct knockoff of Dragon Quest and Megami Tensei conceptually, Digital Pets thematically and Mother aesthetically.

      Delete
    7. @MattTwo The fanbase puts the Zero series on a pedestal and rightfully so. ZX is a little more mixed, but fairly well liked. The Battlenetwork Games are liked well enough. Its just that tactical rpgs are for a more niche crowd.

    1. Here's two things to keep in mind, everyone loves to kick a dog when it's down. So all of the people who didn't like the show are going to show up when it seems like it's gone, that's natural.

The second one is that you can't conflate people on social media being supportive of the show (staff is also active on these so that will always color perceptions as well) as a gauge to the overall response to the show whether it's performing well both commercially or with general audiences. The "it's not for you, so you don't get to have an opinion about the show" attitude is insular and it just feeds more on the people who will celebrate when it's gone.

    4. Now that is an untrue statement. Back in the 90s CN was *the* hub for watching the largest variety of western animation, regardless of it's age. The channel was thriving on cable with a large amount of recognizable third party licenses.

I grew up watching stuff like The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Swat Kats, Speed Racer, Dexter's Laboratory, and a whole multitude more growing up. CN for years was *the* best cartoon oriented channel due to it's unbeatable variety...

-but now they've gone way downhill with their horrid handling of third party licenses, among other things, like their unhealthy obsession with TTG.

  10. N-no, it's gone. It's completely and totally not airing. Not in Cartoon Network, not on Boomerang. CN is airing more Teen Titans GO! in that slot (not even Ben 10 is on there, anymore!) and it's airing Grizzy and the Lemmings on the Boomerange 8 PM slot. The show is still on the website and you don't even need your provider information to watch it. But, the website doesn't have the web-exclusive episodes, anymore!

Wikipedia doesn't have any episodes beyond 20 listed. Other sites have synopses and descriptions and such, though.

I was really getting into things and "Lightfall" was genuinely the best episodes, so far! They got pretty serious. Not on the level of Steven Universe or that, but still. I'm actually… quite upset, right now.
    … … …
I'm not sure who's more to blame, here. You people, or Cartoon Network's baffling decision to air the show long before most kids get up on a weekend.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Part of it may have to do with it being a limp-wristed Ben 10-Lite, but the much more significant part of it is probably due to CN's hate for anything that isn't a cheap comedy made in flash like Teen Titans Go, or before that Johnny Test. Just like when they murdered the DC Nation Block, CN has made their stance on action shows very clear: They don't want them. Same for shows with any kind of running plotlines. They want comedic syndication, and Megaman wasn't that. It's pretty clear that CN was going to kill this show from the beginning. It having zero audience appeal was just the nail in the coffin.

I'm sorry you enjoy the show, but objectively, it had very little going for it between it's approach to the series and the platform it was on. It desperately wanted to cash on Nostalgia so people who played Megaman Classic as children would make their kids watch it, but it wasn't similar enough to catch those people's attention. On the same note it wanted to distance itself from the trappings of classic Megaman, but because it wanted to appeal to the fans of the series, it wasn't willing to be different enough to catch the attention of kids or anyone else involved, and just ends up a reject ben 10. I remember the DBZ days. I remember anime block era toonami. If a kid likes a show that much, they will set their alarms to be up early on sunday for it.

It failed to land with any audience.

      Delete
    2. It wasn't even that good

The only megaman i ever woke up for at 6 am was nearly a decade ago when Battle Network had its anime it was a terrible dub but frankly i enjoyed it

      Delete
    3. Please.

This was a misguided project from the start and the decisions made along the way did nothing to even attempt to make up for it.

You can blame whatever you want. Nobody here made a difference whether they wanted to or not.

      Delete
    4. It's a crappy cartoon adaption, calm down.

      Delete
    5. Well, given the show's main demographic, I wouldn't say the pre-existing fans writing this show off was the instrument of its downfall. It had a mixed first impression from reviewers (plenty of whom weren't Mega Man fans), and even Protodude mentioned the kids he's talked to didn't watch it as a result of CN screwing it over. So with little positive word of mouth and CN's insistence on giving TTG and their other first-party shows priority, it's little wonder things have gone the Sonic Boom route.

It's a shame, because while I hadn't gotten around to actually watching it so far, it looked like the type of thing I'd have been into as a kid. I'll probably watch it by the time it's all said and done on CN's website.

  13. This is not surprising, but it's probably for the best. If Capcom really wanted to try to attract a new generation of Mega Man fans, they should have made a cartoon that at least vaguely resembled the existing Mega Man canon. Even the Ruby-Spears cartoon did a better job of that than Fully Charged has...and that's also keeping in mind that the fact that the Ruby-Spears cartoon had an episode with lion men...

  28. Hey guys, so I don't have any kind of official confirmations or anything, but I've been finding myself in touch with a handful of folks behind the show's animation at DHX Media over the past few months (thanks in part to our commentary series D-Pad + Chill covering the show since its launch), and thus far there hasn't been any real commotion about the show being in danger of cancellation or anything.

Since at least a week or two ago, doing a quick Google search for "Mega Man Fully Charged episode 21" has resulted in information about said next episode ("Rush to Greatness"), along with a release date of November 11, along with similar information for the five episodes that come after (allegedly airing on November 11, 18, and 25 in pairs as they have been so far).

I'm not positive on the reason for the four-week break, especially since (from what I'm told) the show is more or less complete animation-wise for the next roughly 20 episodes, but given the lack of chatter about the show's future I'd be willing to guess this month-long hiatus was planned in advance, but was never very well publicized.

We'll have to wait until November to be certain (barring an official announcement from Cartoon Network, Dentsu Entertainment, DHX Meda, etc.), but I sincerely hope things are okay and the show comes back and finishes out the next 32 episodes without time off. If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, I highly recommend it. As someone who was initially 100% turned off by what seemed at the outset to be a 30th anniversary cashgrab with no redeeming qualities, my mind was very quickly changed, and over the course of the 20 episodes that have aired so far, it's really come into its own.

I don't have a huge amount of information beyond what I've said here (and I don't know how much else I'll learn or be able to share without risking people getting in trouble), but feel free to hit me up @downrightdpad or on our channel if anyone has further questions, happy to help clear up any of the confusion I can!

    1. If I thought the first two episodes were outright bad (characters, animation, dialogue, the works), is there hope for me to get into it?

      Delete
    2. Yes.

The animation gets markedly better over time, the characters start to develop into their own arcs (for example, slightest of spoilers but you find out the next time Fire Man shows up that he has in fact been trying hot yoga to keep his temper in check, to... middling results), and the episodes in general start to become more cleverly written and less "kid show monster of the week".

In short, Episodes 1 & 2 are not particularly strong indicators of the direction the show takes. They give you an idea of the show's basic mechanics, but it isn't until a few more episodes in that a groove starts to take hold, and the show overall improves solidly as time goes on.

Personal favorite episodes thus far include:
      Episode 7: Nice on Ice
Episode 9: Tripping the Light Fantastic
Episode 13: I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency)
      Episode 16: Power Cycle
Episode 17: Bored to Be Wild
Episode 18: Enter the Wood Man
      Episodes 19/20: Lightfall (two-parter)

  30. This is really disappointing. I'm not a fan of watching stuff on my laptop honestly. I think this show was fairly good for what it tried to do so far, and Aki's battle with Lord Obsidian in the last two episodes was actually pretty dark. The fact he lost three quarters of his energy and weapon gauges in one shot tells you this was definitely serious. They even made a neat reference to the Classic series with Mini uttering "Stick to the classics!" which is a tongue in cheek comment to buster only runs people love doing. The show was just trying to have a little fun with the source material and of course everyone had to boo it and CN in all its grand wisdom had to put it in a death slot.

First, it is thanks to the old fans that the franchise is still alive to this day so show some respect.
Second, we aren't the target demography. They were targeting kids, if that didn't work out so well then that is their fault and not ours.
Third, Cartoon Network is the channel putting it in a death slot and killing it soon after season one is over. Blame them, not us.

But, once I started taking those words literally… looking at the cartoon and realizing that it, in fact, wasn't made "for me…" I eased back and even looked into it. And, you know what? I found a good cartoon that I found very interesting, cute, and funny.

So, yeah. I guess I can blame myself as much as anyone else. I came around… but, I started things up, too. (Seriously, I think I was the first one to actually (sarcastically) use that hashtag.)

In that case, why blame them at all? If anything, they can only help the ratings since they would be viewers that the cartoon wasn't even trying to attract.

    3. Or the old fans give it publicity by complaining about it. :P

  35. Just when it was starting to get good...SCREW YOU CN!!!

  36. As someone who re-watched the Ruby-Spears series fairly recently, it has aged... pretty badly. Not as badly as the Legend of Zelda cartoon, but frankly Fully Charged has been a much more entertaining experience thus far.

  37. despite all the snarky comments, I stand face front, unashamed and I say I like Fully Charged, but I also knew about Cartoon Network's attitude towards new shows, specially the ones that aren't their own. (see Transformers)

I understand why most Mega Man "fans" wouldn't like this show but what I would like to know is if they understand that a 6AM sunday deathslot is hardly what most people would consider "giving the show a chance".

  38. Honestly it seems like it was deliberated.
A terrible airing schedule and next to no advertising of the show... it seemed like CN really wanted this show to be done with and disappear.

Which is sad. I was enjoying the show... from what I could see people on youtube reacting to I mean.
here's still hope for a worldwide release.

  39. See what happens when you try to force cheap cash ins on people? You lose MORE money. Cartoon Network only loves Cartoon Network made shows anyway. Why do people keep thinking cartoon network is always the best channel for there show when stuff like this keeps happening?

  40. Times like this makes me wish Fox Kids was still around so new shows actually have a chance, unlike being swept under the rug if you air on CN.

  41. The one from the 80s was Captain N and it was even worse than the Ruby-Spears series. You don't want that again, trust me.

  42. Oh gee, that's too bad!

  43. I was actually enjoying Fully Charged, the problem is that the show's first half was uneven it had good episodes and really bad ones but when the second half started there was a massive improvement with the Light fall 2 parter being the highlight. The fact the Woodman episode tackled post-war conditions some soldiers go through and for a kids show make it a decent attempt is commendable in my book. So yeah I don't care if this statement raises fans eyebrows but this was becoming a far more enjoyable show than the Ruby Spears series and Rush in the show is just ADORABLE.

  46. Your trippin if you think Fully Charged is better and more accurate then Ruby Spears.

  47. This is what happens when criticism is completely ignored and the creators get on with it regardless of the viewers backlash.
They where told that the artstyle was bad, kept it the way it was.
They where told the writing was mediocre, they didn't care and got on with it.
They where told that they wanted the pivotal characters to show up to actually kinda resemble the source material (resemble, not make it 100% identical), they put some guy what was ripped off from the Archie comics, and made a Wily relative a walking joke. Just... WHAT? Have they ignored that Wily pretty much caused an apocalipsis with the Maverick Virus? (indirectly, but what else would he be creating such a virus for?) Wily when is serious is a force to be reckoned with.
But hey, at least is better than the crap that Ruby Spears pulled out.

  48. Hey! I had a conversation with Joe Kelly via Twitter and he told me this:

"We are still very much in production. :) I can’t say exactly when the new episodes will air, but they’re coming. Thanks!" (https://twitter.com/JoeKellyMOA/status/1051617858453684225)

Well, "Mega Man: Fully Charged" is not canceled. Do you believe to both me and Joe Kelly himself?
