Capcom Reveals 25th Anniversary Soundtrack Collection

If you're a fan of Mega Man music, you might want to start saving up for this.  To commemorate the Blue Bomber's 25th anniversary, Capcom Japan plans to release a sizable soundtrack collection called the "Rockcan."  Inside its lovely E-Can packaging, you'll find ten discs of music from Mega Man 1 to Mega Man 10 (PlayStation "Complete Works" remixes included). Curiously, Mega Man & Bass and the five Game Boy games are not represented.  Or Mega Man Soccer.  That's a little disheartening but, hey, at least you're getting a nice full-color booklet, too!

The collection isn't due out until September 19th for 14,700 Yen (roughly $185).  For the time being, it's an e-Capcom exclusive.  I suppose now is as good time as any to begin begging and pleading Capcom USA to bring it stateside. If that fails, well, there's always Ebay.

I believe a quick 'hurray' is in order, everyone: this is the first official 25th anniversary-related announcement.  Now, let's just keep those fingers crossed for something a bit more juicy down the line...

  1. Seems like the Saturn version of Megaman 8 is not listed? This would be great if it's a really complete soundtrack of the 10 games, otherwise... Not so much

  2. Oh look, it's the logo I leaked. :D

Wow, it's kind of expensive, I really hope this isn't the only 25th anniversary item for Mega Man.

  3. Do not want. Too much emphasis on classic Mega Man. Needs everything.

  4. It's a start, looks nice, but only the classic series? I know it would be a bit big with every series included, but wouldn't that be more charming?

  5. This was way too predictable. A good start, yes, but this will not rectify a year's worth of disappointments.

  6. They took the easy route with this one, at least this is the first time the remixes from the complte works will by in CD but there is some stuff missing, like M&B and maybe something really new a unique like a new remix CD, a figure or something to make it more worth.

  7. Two. Hundred. Dollars.

Are they trying to recoup the costs they put into MML3?

You know, even MML3's cancellation I could rationalize. This?
No, this doesn't even make sense.

  8. More? aside from this not particularly interesting reveal, Ill be surprised if they actually announce anything noteworthy at all. Soundtracks are not really what the blue bomber needs, when there are dozens of MM soundtracks out there already.

I mean, a GAME is definitely out of the question, and thats just about all that would help at this point, and even then, only if it were a particular game.

Capcom's gonna have to try much harder than a soundtrack for a 25th anniversary.

  9. Oh, look. It's the logo that one guy leaked. Well, I guess that's the official logo.

So... Great! A $200.00 soundtrack compilation. I bet it uses the same low-quality recordings on the "Rockman 1~6 - Capcom Music Generation" soundtrack.
It's also too bad they didn't some of my all-time favorite tunes. Like the ones from Rockman World 2. Or the King Battle theme from Rockman & Forte.

Welp! It's a good thing I already have high-quality rips of everything courtesy of your friendly neighborhood affiliate site. Including the aforementioned missing content. And prototype tracks. Take that, Capcom of Japan. ;3

  10. Good for Japan. I wonder what we get. If anything.
I remember the American bonus for Wild Arms Alter Code: F being 1 or 2 episodes of the Anime. Which I had already bought for 5 dollars from ADV. Meanwhile the Japanese bonus DVD with cutscenes and OP/ED movies and illustration galleries from Wild Arms 1/2/3.

  11. But where are the Rockman GAMES, CAPCOM?
    Where are the (new) GAMES?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I sure hope that's not the whole celebration. That would be like showing up expecting ten pizzas and a DJ, and only finding peanuts and a card table.

  13. This is officially worse than Mario's 25th anniversary SNES-ROM-dump-on-a-disc. Wake me up when we get an anniversary bash as glorious and fanservicey as Turtles Forever (TMNT), Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (Super Sentai) or Sonic Generations.

  14. Cool! I can't wait to play this new ga--oh. ohhhhh.

  15. Great, some actual 25th anniversary stuff!..

And it's nothing we haven't seen before. And it's really expensive. And that's the official logo.

I want to be excited for the 25th, believe me; it's just that this isn't too impressive.

  16. @ June 21, 2012 3:18 AM Anonymous: Then we have 10 more years to have a decent anniversary like what Super Sentai did. XD Though, to make it clear, I'm not hating on Gokaiger. I freaking love the Super Sentai series, especially Gokaiger.

Now, $200 for a collection of CDs of Classic Mega Man? Not that I'm not a fan of Classic Megsy, but I'd rather use $200 to buy a Microsoft Surface.

  17. @June 21, 2012 3:18 AM: Oh yes lets all ignore the fact Nintendo gave Galaxy 2 that same year. God I'm tired of people ignoring that part.

@Anyone bitching about lack of X/Legends/EXE/SF/Zero/ZX: This is CLASSIC'S 25th. Lets just all remember that before we commence bitching. Capcom may focus on Classic instead of the others.

  18. A $200 soundtrack for MM's 25th? What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow... $200 for 10 CDs? That's all?

You kidding me capcom? The Street figher 25th anniversary collection comes with a statue, a hard cover art book, games, dlc, ryu belt, and 15 cds of soundtrack and other bonus material costs less than this lazily put together crap. :|

  20. Sad when the fans won't support what little chance we have to let Capcom know we still want to buy Megaman stuff.
Every remake or remaster they put out is testing to see if there still are any fans left.
If no one buys it there will be no more games and no more figures, period.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 200 bucks for FC soundchip recordings.

Wow. Just wow. And the set isn't even complete by any stretch of an imagination.

    ReplyDelete
  22. How can it possibly take that many CDs, and how can it possibly be that expensive? Absurd! Laughable!

I stayed out of the name-calling when Capcom cancelled MML3, but this is just insulting. Bunch of idiots at HQ right now.

  23. @Anon 11:08 AM
So you're saying we should blindly buy everything that has the Megaman label on it, regardless of price/quality/content. Got it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @June 21, 2012 11:08 AM: Sorry, but buying this overpriced collection is no guarantee that they'll make another MM game.

I've used this phrase several times now and I feel like a broken record, but this is a blatant cash grab, and we are allowed to not be happy with it. Especially not when there's a better, less expensive Street Fighter 25th anniversary set on the way.

  25. Ditto at what Model M is saying.

Although at this point, I just wonder if that’s Capcom’s intent, so they can use non-sales as an excuse to end the franchise.

I hate to sound conspiracist, but this is just mind-blowingly awful. It would almost have to be intentional.

...Color me underwhelmed. While this would be awesome if it had both original and remastered tracks for every series, with just being classic, and just a standard OST...

I'm sorry capcom, but I already have that. There's gotta be more to the 25th than something that weak.

It really sounds like a lose-lose for fans.
    WARNING: CONSPIRACY-FLAVORED TONE AHEAD

    (a) Fans buy this music collection.
CAPCOM decides, "Fans don't need games to sustain themselves! More merchandise!"

    (b) Fans don't buy this music collection.
CAPCOM decides, "Fans don't have much of an interest in Megaman anymore! No more games!"

Eek, yeah, I didn’t think about it that way. Ouch.
See, this is why businesses need to make quality products and decisions the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Anon 1:10 PM

The only solution is to blindly buy this regardless of quality.

  30. Let's just be thankful that this collection isn't going to be available over here.

  32. It's interesting that they've gone with this option. Sega celebrated the 20th anniversary of some of their classic series like AfterBurner and OutRun this way, with soundtrack box sets that had every single version of all the tracks in their games. Those were also sold for more than $100. I guess Japan really likes this.

I don't know, I might still get it, but I'll agree it's kind of expensive. I don't think there will be a US release of this in any form.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Gotta say, I like the E-Can holder. This is a pretty nice set! Although the price is a little "ouch" for most of us. This is a great start to a fulfilling Anniversary!

    ReplyDelete
  34. May not be all that impressive, but in comparison to some of the other merchandise goods we seen recently, I still say that this is a little better. But as everyone already pointed out, we've got plenty of OST releases by now.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmm...HMM...actually, I kinda take back that praise I gave.

This set really isn't that outstanding and how they could market it at that price is beyond me. It lacks a lot of classic soundtracks and where 1-6 also has the arrange tracks, the 9 and 10 arranged albums aren't included. Granted they are of a different sort, but still. To be honest, the set is really lacking and at BEST $59.99 or even $49.99 would be more appropriate prices. I still like the E-Can holder, so the set really isn't a total loss...but still. =/

  36. Honestly, I'm more excited for the Rokko Chan Official Soundtrack and the Rokko Chan Arrange Soundtrack than this.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @June 21, 2012 8:44 AM: That's because it was NOT branded as part of the celebrations like, say, Skyward Sword was. Therefore, it is TECHNICALLY not qualifiable.

@June 21, 2012 2:13 PM: Epic Games also did the same for their 20th anniversary this year:

    ReplyDelete
  38. @June 21, 2012 3:37 PM: It still happened. Deal with it. Much like how Zelda had an overload of rereleases that same year, only for the 4 swords on the eshop to be 'officially' designated an anniversary release. We all know its bullshit though, as that was the perfect time to release OoT3D. The whole reason nothing was officially designated, much like how Capcom slapped it on everything the anniversary years, was to prevent people from being burnt out, which was the reason Nintendo did not mention Zelda at E3. They burnt the hell out of it last year even if only 2 games were actually officially designated.

I'd also like to point out Mario Party 2 received a rerelease that same year too.

  39. Calm down, people. Remember, we're supposedly getting more stuff in December.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @AquaTeamV3: We know this probably isn't all of it. That doesn't make the price for such a wimpy product any less retarded.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @June 21, 2012 5:13 PM: People didn't get burned out of the aforementionned Gokaiger for an entire YEAR of a WEEKLY TV SHOW. And also, people were burned out by TMNT's 25th anniversary because of TMNT Smash-Up (which was NOT the main attraction of the celebrations; Turtles Forever filled that role, and glorious it was) because Ubisoft whored the Rabbids in their TMNT game (mind you, this was also before Rayman Origins). Please try again; there is no such thing as too much burning out.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @AquaTeamV3

Thing is, a steeply priced rerelease/remastered(?) OST doesn't exactly generate positive hype.

Not to mention the unrealistic expectations of some fans (*cough*retro X9*cough*) like myself (at least I can admit it's unrealistic), and you can see why the rustling of a million Stonekongs' jimmies is occuring.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't see why everyone is getting so worked up, especially since there has been no indication that this is all Capcom has planned for MM's 25th Anniversary.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Anon 1:39 PM

Basically yes. The only solution is to blindly buy products despite the price or even the quality. In this case it is not yet released so we don't know how high of quality it is yet.

Also, on the topic of the price, when you think about it, it really isn't as expensive as many people make it out to be. Elementary school kids with no jobs might not be able to afford it, but I would assume most people who buy the music CDs from old games are no longer in Elementary School.

Anyway, I am hoping Capcom will get the message than Megaman CAN sell after the CDs sell well enough so we can all sit down and play a new and fun Megaman game some day.

    Thats called fanboyism fyi.

  46. "The only solution is to blindly buy products despite the price or even the quality."

    *Snort* bullshit.

$185 is ridiculously expensive. You must be rolling in it if you think these soundtracks are worth that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. ↑ These are the types of people who don't care if we ever get another game or not.

I'm by no means rolling in it, but I don't see how less than $20 is expensive for a 1 remastered CD. So for people who want to buy all 10, it is relatively cheap.
Although these days most people steal music, movies and games from the internet, so I suppose it would feel expensive to someone who only gets stolen products.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Um blindly buying any product regardless of quality or price is not an intelligent decision. That may support the company; but it supports poor quality. If you never care about quality in comparison to price (and quantity for that matter) then you will always get low quality because the company knows you will buy it regardless. That would be reinforcement.

At any rate; I won't judge the price just yet. Being that we don't know a) The quality of the songs, and b) the quantity. $185 might be expensive if say, each soundtrack had only 10 songs per game (Thus making 100). That would make the unit price of each song $1.85; which is a TAD pricy. Most songs go for about $0.99; sometimes around $1.29. Of course there are exceptions, but we're talking in generalizations for now.

Also keep in mind that for a soundtrack like this we are probably not going to be getting anything completely new, these will be remakes/remixes/remasterings. Not exactly ground breaking stuff. I think it is a great product, just pricey. I think Capcom could offer more, even without breaking the bank to do so. For instance giving a piece of art, a cheap figure (Gatchapon quality), a booklet of some kind, a rebate. Something to make it a little more worthwhile.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am not saying blindly buying products regardless of quality or price is a good thing, but in this case it is supporting a dying series which I would assume most people here would like saved.
Also, mind you we don't know the quality of these CDs yet, and the price isn't nearly as bad as most people seem to be saying it is.

And quality goes up only as much as the money that comes back in. The first Resident Evil was made on chicken scratch, but nowadays something like RE6 is 60 million dollars and the quality for the most part is very high.

If there is not enough money in something the quality will not go up, and if there is no money in the lower quality products the series will go away.
