The Live-Action Mega Man Movie Isn't Dead Yet, It Seems

Back in August we reported (via Variety) that the Mega Man live-action movie could have been shelved following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox as a number of Fox-related films were reportedly cancelled mid-development. However, according to Capcom's latest financial results, the franchise is still poised for a live-action film adaptation.

Here is the relevant statement regarding expanded brand-awareness:
"... to generate synergy with its popular games via greater global brand awareness and value, the Company has been producing world-leading content, with brands such as Street Fighter and Resident Evil being made into Hollywood movies, now followed by Monster Hunter and Mega Man, which are also scheduled for live-action film adaptation."
At this time, it remains to be seen if this is the same project that was intended to be produced by Masi Oka and written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. What's more, there's no indication of Disney is involved or if Capcom are shopping the film around to different studios/distributors.

More news on this subject as it comes!

  1. Doesn't take much to say something is "scheduled". If there's no studio attached to it I can rest easy knowing it's firmly in development hell for at least a few more years.

  2. Live action is an instant pass.
They could not possibly come up with the magic formula.
Unless they cast Keanu Reeves as Proto Man. That would be funny.

  3. I would much rather have a anime film based on Mega Man, like Maverick Hunter X, or even a full CGI-based movie.

    1. Agreed, Maverick Hunter X was pretty good, so maybe more of those!

  4. As long as it stays true to the original storyline of the games, and doesn't throw around cinematic cliches, I'm all good.

  5. Schedule it to release on February 31st

  8. Actually, I think animation would be more suitable for a Mega Man movie myself. Something about live action just doesn't click when it comes to that.

    1. That's what I think too. The style could be better represented. The environs, characters and enemies would look good.
But of they end up making Live Action that looks like Mortal Kombat Armageddon or Pixels, I'd rather hide under a met helmet than see it.
It seems like a real easy choice. How they could choose live action over animation is befuddling.

    2. Because outside in most places of Japan many people still have this stupid "animation is only for kids" mindset and won't even go see a animated movie if it's not Disney or the likes.
To be clear, i don't mean that making a live-action is a better idea (if they make it live action, they have a good chances of failing to make it well, which mean the movie will be panned by the reviews and thus will fail anyway) but execs just think they have a higher chances at reaching a large audiences if they make it live action. A real shame in my opinion.

    3. Animation is only for kids, huh? I am not convinced they are marketing to anyone BUT that demographic. Unless they hired Michael Bay, which is ANOTHER reason NOT to do this. Se the trailer for what I am guessing will be an abysmal Sonic movie? That certainly wasn't made for my age group.

Anyone with common sense can tell with a 95% probability which movies are going to bomb, suck or both.
I'm convinced these Hollywood execs are so stupid (to be nice) they can't tell anymore.
Anyone with a semi functional brain can tell live action is a bad idea in this case.

And I'm not sure Milla Jovavich would fit as Roll...

    4. Taking into account we don't know how it is going to be marketed. That's just an assumption based on how the franchise in general, outside of X and Zero, is handled. On top of similar movies of this assumed variety.

    5. Yeah, you know, animation is for ANYONE, not just kids; I think an animated Mega Man movie would have a larger audience than some folks might think. The Incredibles is animated, and while a lot of the merch is targeted at the younger generation, some aspects of the actual movies are honestly more comprehensible among adults. These days, I believe animation is targeted at all generations, not just young'uns.

    6. anon3: the incredibles is a Pixar movie, like anon2 said in his comment, if you're Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks, you don't get that animation age ghetto bullcrap because you're big enough for everyone to take you seriousely.
And they weren't saying that animation IS for kid, on the oposite, they where saying that too many people FALSELY assume that animation is for kids.

@ Shrap: "Anyone with common sense can tell with a 95% probability which movies are going to bomb, suck or both.

I think that the point anon2 was making (correct me if i'm wrong) . the peoples makings theses live actions adaptation of everything have no idea how they should do things. Which is why we get a live action. The Sonic movie you mention is a good exemple, they make it sound kiddie, but at the same times they tried (and failed at) giving Sonic a "grittier" design to seem more serious or grounded or whatever. They should have just made it animated and give Sonic the look that everyone already know and love from the get-go, but instead they did that. Because superhero movies and detective Pikachu told them that live action is what work nowadays.

    7. I agree with the cancelling. Mega Man is not perfect for live-action, unlike Sonic.

    1. What's that got to do with anything? C'mon, a live-action movie isn't THAT bad.

    2. But the problem is... Mega Man in live-action? No chance for that. Impossible to do that with him.

  10. Nobody requested it. Nobody needs it. So please just don't.

    1. We do need it actually. Even poor movie adaptations tend to have a positive effect on the sales of the source material, be it only because at least some people want to see how said source material was different (and better). Like how the Ghost in the Shell movie caused people to buy the manga. And the only thing Megaman needs now is that people outside of alreay established fans hear about it.
10 or 15 years ago, i would have seen it as a bad thing because people could get a wrong impression about the franchise due to the movie larger exposure, but nowadays audiences are more aware of the fact that bad movie adaptation don't reflect what the original looks like. And even if they're not aware of it, there will be enough people screaming it on the internet to let them know.

Of course, that's assuming it will just "Not that great" bad, or "fun to watch" bad, it could just be bad bad like the last airbender, and in that case it will indeed not accomplish anything at all.

  11. I don't think it would end up being a good film, but I don't think being live action would have much to do with that.
Most of the robot masters just look like people in costumes anyway, and GCI is pretty good at representing metal and plastic.
So it'd probably be a bad movie even if it got the look of the games right. If it doesn't get the look of the games right, that's probably not because it's live action.

    1. really i think if it'll fail visually, it will be either for trying to hard to have "grounded" or "realitic" design when the robot master, especially thoses from older games, looks like funny cartoon characters.
I think there are more chances that the movie tyrns bad because it uses a cliché or blank plot.
