The Mega Man Movie is Probably Headed to Netflix as Chernin Entertainment Inks First-Look Deal

Chernin Entertainment, the production company behind the live-action Mega Man film, has signed a first-look deal with Netflix, reports Deadline. Although terms of the multi-year pact were not disclosed, it's largely implied Netflix will become the exclusive home of future Chernin Entertainment projects... Mega Man included.

The live-action Mega Man movie was originally slated to be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Earlier this year, however, Chernin Entertainment part ways the company after it was absorbed by Disney. Chernin were able to retain the rights to 80-plus film projects it had in development at 20th Century Fox.

Mega Man will be directed by Henry Joost, produced by Masi Oka and written by Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer of Matt Reeve's The Batman (2021). As the film is currently in pre-production, there are no details on story, cast or a release date.

  1. I just want a game in the main timeline in X, ZX, and Legends, and even an additional main time line new series entry after ZX and before Legends. Enough of the toys, side projects, and cartoons for now.

    1. i kinda want zx3 to be the bridge to legends instead of a new series,i do want an x9(that has x4's look and cutscenes for the story, and maverick intros, has the navigators be playable as i love layer, pallete and alia along with the cut x,zero, axel navigator mode, shows more of dr. light and wily's ,and closes out x8's cliffhanger while going into thedestruction of sigma and the wily virus and the events ofthe elf wars which an x9 should focus on.maybe reintroduce characters from command mission and the extreme series and include optional cutscenes and artwork showing x,zero and axels interactions with the navigators and more of zero's relationship with iris.) megaman 12(that has roll, protoman with better gameplay, bass and duo be playable and ties it to x with showing x's creation as both power fighter games foreshadow x and zero.) and legends(that includes all the concepts of legends 3 and storywise i would love it to be about volnutt, aero's group the bright bats and the bonnes racing to get a treasure that includes them finding the sealled away classic and roll as i head-canon classic and roll were sealed away around the time x was created as legends 3 has a model of classic in its development and command mission has concept art of classic and cutman.:3) i would love to see a megaman anime(thats like the original pitch for the ruby spears cartoon.:3),the archie comics come back and more figurines(just have it be megahouse, kotobukiya, sentinel since they're planning on making figurines for tron bonne and the star force cast or alpha x omega be the creators as i am tired of model kits and focus on more then classic,x and zero.make ones for the navigators, iris, roll and some of the legends, star force, battle network and zx.)

    2. Well considering that even in ZX, it is too early even for an Elder system to exist, and Legends takes place maybe 6500 before legends at the least or maybe even around the year 10,000 (ZX is in 25XX), the master system and Elysium probably being built between 4000 and 5000 AD, if it is 8000 AD in Legends, since the master was on that station for 3000 years, and probably 100s of years between the Master's death and trigger awakening as a carbon, I highly doubt ZX3 would directly lead into Legends any more than the Zero series did. They thought the same thing back when Zero 4 was out because of the reploid diagram in the opening looking sleek like Trigger.

I even imagine a series that takes place during the war that caused the master system to shut down the elder system and destroyed the orbital elevator that led to Elysium - remnants of elevator shown on the 5 island Legends phone game that I never played which takes places between Legends 1 and 2, saying 'heaven' on it or Elysium, which is not the moon btw as that is shown in a cutscene where Trigger takes the master to earth.

Of course originally when X5 came out, the bad ending was supposed to branch off into Legends since X talked about creating Elysium and the map selection screen shows the globe's continents shattered from full force colony collision like the following, though that was retconned, but even the map on Legends 2 shows craters in the ocean and on islands (X5 and Legends 2 coming out around the same time)... http://www.capcom-unity.com/mega_man/go/thread/view/7461/30529187/where-on-alternate-earth-is-neo-arcadia-or-area-zero?post_num=4#545197601

    3. The following is the Legends 2 map, forbidden island probably being the north pole and most of the game taking place maybe within a 1000 miles of it (even a number measurement stat probably in KM at the bottom), but the world having far more global warming being part of the reason for more ocean and less ice (notice the craters all over, since the original intent was the Eurasia colony from X5 causing that if you get the world devastating bad ending in X5): https://megaman.fandom.com/wiki/Earth?file=MML2Map.png

  2. They better not make it R-Rated! The Mega Man franchise is aimed at General Audiences (yes that includes the X and Zero series),and it's best if it stays that way. Plus,I Hate the use of F-Bombs (in all forms).

Also,It completely sucks that Netflix gets all of the Video Game and Anime adaptions.

    1. Given that Bass himself does use swear words in the Japanese of Mega Man & Bass.

It would probably be a PG-13, if Chernin added Bass in the film.

  3. This is hardly the time for a movie, let alone a live-action one. The franchise needs some really solid current games under its belt.

  4. I'd just like to see a proper adaptation of Mega Man or X at this point. I get that the Classic storyline is kind of Saturday morning cartoon levels of simple and the X series has some messy (being generous) story telling, but I still think there's room for great adaptations of them in other forms of media. Battle Network did a pretty good job and I'm pretty sure that worked out well for them, yeah?

But there always seems to be some needless catch or twist. Hopefully this turns out well since they seem insistent on making it happen, but it's a little tough for me to be optimistic about this one and, as others have pointed out here and in other spots, this just doesn't really seem like something the franchise needs right now.

  5. And here I was, hoping this thing would be in development hell. Boo.

  6. The good news is the lack of a script being shopped around to potential cast members means we are still a ways off from this becoming a reality.

The bad news is shifting this to Netflix as opposed to a theatrical release means a step in the process (getting a distributor) is now removed.

  7. Just make a decent anime that adheres relatively close to some form of generally accepted source material visually and tonally, what is so complicated? Have some liberty with the plot to try and improve its consistency in continuity, change things here and there to patch up some plot, character and lore elements but while keeping the core essence of what was there before, in other words no political or cultural agendas dictating or directing any changes needed to be made to update the story and characters, let what would be be best logically fit with what is established be the guiding principle.

That's it, make a decent anime like that or even try to be ambitious with the strong points that made the series popular and go for broke with some of the best looking and sounding stuff around and it's all good.

    1. i really want to see a megaman anime (or capcom anime of its previous series like rival schools, god hand, red earth.cyberbots, gotcha force, asuras wrath or another street fighter/darkstalkers anime in general) that just has its look and tone like the games which would translate well to an anime format(i like the ruby spears cartoon just fine as of the 3 capcom cartoons it with a few eyebrow raising episodes as exceptions was as close to the games tone as it could be,but i will not hold back with saying i do wish the original pitch was used and that fully charged had used this style and tone especially as it was around the time 11 came out instead of being a mighty no. 9 cartoon changed to megaman after the mess it was.) i think a megaman anime based on classic,x,or legends would do well if they stuck to its tone and design and while i have next to zero hype/hope for the live action film (we really need to stop making adaptations live action as a 1st step as its the biggest way for a product to immediatly fail if not done correctly as disney and the 1st concept of the sonic movie showed.)but if the robot masters/megaman,roll and protoman(who i could see being a post credits cliffhanger like tails in the sonic movie.sorry if i spoiled anyone) are kept cgi and look like how they do in 8/11(im honestly not a fan of his nes inspired look in smash bros. as i think his more human feel and design from recent games/artwork fits classics nature more.) and keep its story like megaman 1 with just exploring and fighting robot masters(instead of an unnecessary human character going with megaman have it be roll and show playful banter along with touching great moments of their relationship as siblings and with dr. light.) with human characters being limited to dr.'s light, wily and a few other named characters i could see it at least being ok or decent. i personally along with a new game for classic(that makes roll playable along with protoman, bass and duo.),x(that goes into sigma getting destroyed for good along with the wily virus by the mother elf and the events of the elf wars, showing the fates of the characters as the comics show axel and likely the navigators getting involved in the fight against dr. weil and zeros body.maybe give it a style similar to x4 with animated cutscenes for the story and maverick intros along with having the navigators be playable and the scrapped mode that had x,zero and axel be their navigators.also in my opinion show dr. light and wily's spirits talking to x and zero and maybe give them clues to the maverick virus's cure before departing as we dont see them mentioned in the zero series and i think they should get a proper sendoff.) and legends(that includes all the planned concepts for legends 3 and the other games and storywise reveals what happened to classic and roll after the classic series as a model of classic megaman was used in legends 3's development and along with classic and cutman originally going to be in command mission, legends japanese version calls volnutt a maverick hunter and glyde vava, viles japanese name and x5 mentions x possibly being one of the founding creators of esylium and maybe even volnutt, which would be interesting to see a megaman created by another megaman.i also like to think classic and roll were sealed away and would like if legends 3 was about volnutt, roll casket and the bonnes racing to get control of them.:3) i personally would really love to see the archie comics bring megaman back.(i like it way more than sonic's and thought it did a great adaptation of the games i would love to see it be brought back.:3)

  9. can they just not? this really isn't necessary

  10. I'm still kind of looking forward to it. It could be bad, but it could also be good. Plus more Mega Man in peoples faces, the more people will be aware of the franchise.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Is it bad that A) I just want it to be good (like a megaman version of Detective Pikachu or The Sonic Movie) and not shit B) I really would like it to stay in the realm of the Classic series's canon C) Please if Protoman, Roll even Megaman are in this Cgi it getting actors for those roles is gonna be hard for the long term especially if they want to make sequels later on. Otherwise the fandom needs to chill the fuck out and be happy that capcom is doing ANYTHING Blue Bomber related at all.

    2. You had me in the first half. Telling people they need to be thankful for what they get isn't the right way to win people over.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, doesn't work that way.

Fans have shown time and time again there's profit to be made from the series, so they absolutely don't have to take any and everything Capcom decides to throw the brand at with a smile.

That and considering their history of mismanaging the series people absolutely need to call them out on when they are doing things that seem like a mistake since those same fans will get blamed when the thing nobody is asking for doesn't do well.

      Delete
    4. Didn't Capcom outright blame the fans for Legends 3 not getting made? I remember something like that.

      Delete
    5. Specifically Capcom of Europe's twitter blamed fans. Capcom made a statement trying to say that that's not what the Twitter account meant and that they didn't blame fans, but if you look at other tweets made after they released their initial tweet to the cancellation, it was obvious that whoever was on Capcom of Europe's twitter absolutely was blaming fans.

    1. I don't have (nor want) Netflix.
But I did pick up their Castlevania on BluRay.
That wasn't bad. Not great. But not bad. Season 1 was good. Needed more action and less bad guy politic-ing and ruminating in Season 2.
That's animated though. Not Live Action.

On the opposite note, they butchered Voltron. So yeah. I can see it both ways.

      Delete
    2. To be fair, wasn't Voltron already a botch job of Go-Lion?

      Delete
    3. Yeah. Go-Lion's way better. If you ever get the chance to watch the sub, do so.
But even so, this new Voltron is full of woke nonsense. It Netflix or Capcom does that to Mega Man, I'm done.

  13. An anime of Gigamix would be awesome though.

  14. I just don't see a Live Action working.
Full CGI or animated would work fine.
But to do Live Action, they would need an impossibly large budget to make most of it CGI anyway. Either that or a CGI Mega Man teleported to some city in the "real world" from the "20xx world" where he encounters some kid and has to stop some evil monopoly guy while helping the kid get a date or something. I can live without that.

  15. Noooooo!!!! please! Netflix NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  16. Probably they'll call this "The Mega Movie"...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh c'mon, it is not good at all, absolutely no, we do not need live action of Megaman, he needs a brand new anime, today anime o cartoons live action movies are the worst.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No, just F!#$ing NO! Why is anyone pushing for this? 90% of Mega mans FANS DON'T WANT IT. So if we, the fans, don't want it why keep pushing for it?! MEGA MAN CAN NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE BE A GOOD LIVE ACTION MOVIE. IT'S ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE.
The ONLY way to make money through cinema, is to animate it. It can be 2D or 3D bit NOT LIVE ACTION.

  19. With conveyance and returns gave by the US Postal Service by means of pre-stepped envelopes, Netflix has become an efficient, easy decision for insatiable film watchers the country over.
