Kazuhiro Tsuchiya: "Capcom Has Not Forgotten About Rockman"

The closing comments from Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya – who spoke at last weekend's less-than-stellar Tokyo Game Show 30th anniversary event – have been translated. Check it out:

"I want to say that Capcom has not forgotten about Rockman. This (30th anniversary logo) here is being put to good use. Rockman's 30th anniversary is coming in December – December, please remember that date!
On behalf of Ucchy and everyone here, we are looking forward to it very much and hope you are as well. We are deeply pleased to be able to share this with all the fans who have made this possible. Thank you for all of your support, up til now, and in the future."

Tsuchiya's statement, vague it may be, attempts to instill some hope. At the very least he's mindful of the community's general sentiment that Rockman is forgotten in Capcom's eyes. Tsuchiya isn't ignorant to that. However, think I speak for everyone when I say I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks to Kobun20 for the translation!

    1. Well, I did my part and snagged that sweet, surprisingly affordable Rockman X2 Giga Armor statue. Haven't bought anything else, though I'm keeping an eye on Bandai's Giga Armor line. Hope we hear more from TruForce in the future.

    2. They did back in 2010, but not enough people bought them.

    3. I'm not actually sure about that.

Mega Man 9 surpassed expectations. That was their chance to do something significant. 10 came out, and they claimed to be "happy" with the sales, but it was clearly much more modestly so when compared to the sales of 9.

It was enough to get a few more projects going, and while they did end up getting cancelled, there was enough interest from Capcom to at least get them started.

      Delete
    4. So you're saying MM9 was a jumpstart, but they didn't put enough gas in the tank to keep it going?

      Delete
    5. That's how I feel personally. Though there's no way of knowing how a full budget Mega Man game would do in this day and age.

I disapprove of the concept of the "Capcom tests" the company is so fond of doing, but in my opinion Mega Man 9 was an ideal test. It was a new game for long time fans, but also low budget to avoid being too risky.

When it passed that test and surpassed their expectations, I was hopeful that they would try to do something more meaningful with the series, but they just opted for another low budget game.

As I mentioned, to Capcom's credit, they did seem at least interested in potentially doing something more with Mega Man, but because of how things worked out they ended up cancelling those projects in the end.

    6. Mega Man 9 could have been a jump start, but it was a situational jump start that only works on rare occasion, and is likely to be an obstacle rather than asset in hindsight.

In other words a marketing gimmick.

      Delete
    7. Yeah, in hindsight, Mega Man 9 should not have been a main attraction. It should've been part of something bigger, or maybe not been the 9th installment at all. It's not like with Sonic, where it only had 3 games on the Genesis that people had been begging SEGA to return to. Mega Man's had 3 more games than it need back on the SNES, and then a bunch of spinoffs. It's a much more complicated problem to solve.

  6. I want to hope for something, but I just can't. I've been let down by them too much. Mighty Gunvolt Burst is the closest to being a MegaMan game realeaed this year.

Not just MegaMan, but all of the other smaller capcom franchises. Capcom is too busy chasing trends and pulling all of their resources into make that one AAA game that they want to sell 7-10 million units which rarely ever happens. They need smaller, budget friendly titles that can make back the money invested so why not revisit these old franchises.

Sure MegaMan isn't really a AAA title, but it doesn't need to be and there is still a market for titles like these.

  7. Yeah no i have no real hope till i see something game wise for Rockman from Capcom till then they will remain not worth even mentioning.

They have been digging their own hole for a few years now even the properties they support now are slowing losing their flare.

    6. AnonymousSeptember 30, 2017 at 8:48 AM , it depend where you put "legitimate complaint and criticism", and anywhere in the megaman fandom, i've seen all kinds of complain and criticism, not all of them very viable. Yes, it's normal that a fan of something is displeased or distrusting of the execs when there's not anymore of this something (the something here being megaman game), but there is a large margin between displeased and distrusting, and being a dick (pardon the word, and know that i'm not pointing out at anyone specificaly) about it.
The situation have gotten to the point where we got a reputation of being a terrible and unfriendly fandom, and the lack of game is'nt what give us this reputation, it's how we act about it. (which in turn is certainely not going to help, because if we drive everyone aside from the Die-Hard long-time fans out of the fandom, we're certainely not making any good to megaman popularity). again, i'm only talking in a large way, and i am in no way refering to "all megaman fans", and as you can see from my use of "we" when talking about it, i'm myself a fan, and i might have myself been incorrect in the past, i don't know.
And also to be clear, i'm not saying that Capcom is impeccable and that we should just trust Their every word, far from it. Neither that they are for nothing in the lack of popularity of megaman theses days.

  16. My problem with that statement is that Capcom legitimately does not know how to make good games anymore.

So in their eyes, it might be great to put out a shitty cartoon, and then back that with a game based on the cartoon.

I just have absolutely no hope in Capcom until they prove me wrong, and I am very doubtful they can, considering how horrible that event was.

  23. There's a lot of negativity here already, so I'll offer some positivity.

Just because Mega Man got his start as a game character does not mean the legitimacy of his presence should be resigned to games. Yeah, we've had a lot of merchandise, but that merchandise has been a long time coming; I would have killed for figures and statues like those which have been released over the last 5-6 years when I was a kid. What's more: all that merchandise and the constant re-releasing of games has enabled new generations to get into Mega Man, like my 8-year-old son.

As far as games go: I don't think Mega Man X would have played such a large role in the new Marvel vs. Capcom if he had been forgotten; Mega Man X, with the support of the other characters in the game, wields the weapon which destroys Ultron Sigma. Also: how cool is it that 1/2 of the main villian for such a huge fighting game is the protagonist from a Mega Man game? The game also features Zero, a few different armors for X, and scenery from the games; there's a lot of celebration of and focus on Mega Man ... in a recently-released video game! Let's also not forget Mega Man's presence in the very successful and popular Smash Brothers game.

Finally, there's an upcoming TV show aimed at introducing a whole new generation of kids to Mega Man. I really think Capcom is holding their cards close because of this TV show, and that when it launches we'll see a concerted effort to reinvigorate the character across many more fronts than we already have seen, including (I have a hunch) with a new game.

Yes, actions do speak louder than words, and Mega Man fans have been wronged repeatedly with cancellations over the years, but let's not discount what we do still have, and his presence in quality games which people are playing and loving right now. Let's not be so precious about Mega Man having to be in his very own game to stay relevant; lots of people are enjoying playing as Mega Man right now in brand new video games; lots of people are enjoying the merchandise and increased presence of Mega Man iconography.

I personally think it was a pretty smooth move for Capcom to let Inafune play his cards first, and he fell right on his face; they could learn from his mistakes, and really knock it out of the park when the time is right ... which, as I said before, will probably be revealed around the time of the TV show.

    1. "There's a lot of negativity here already, so I'll offer some positivity."

Sorry, but that is really uncalled for. You think what is happening here is negativity? SERIOUSLY? Maybe if it was 6 years ago, but after what happened in the TGS all things said here are extremely tame.

Please, you really shouldn't be offering positivity, it is not the time for this. It almost feels like you are mocking when you try to offer positivity in this situation. This isn't a crisis, this a funeral. They even brought Megaman's corpse to the TGS stage, it would be funny if it wasn't so sad and infuriating.

I'm going to make myself pretty clear here and remind I can't speak for others when I say what I'm about to say, but here it is: hope for Capcom after this TGS is ZERO. I don't believe in anything coming from Capcom, doesn't matter what they do. I don't even want a new Megaman game made by Capcom, not anymore. I'm too disgusted at them beyond any chance of forgiveness. For me Capcom is as dead as Megaman.

You talked about positivity. I kept my positivity for 6 years, but after TGS it is all over. I forsake Capcom for the rest of my life, they don't exist anymore as far as I'm concerned. Now my positivity will be only for fangames alone and that is as far as it will go from now on.

    4. @Sean A.M.

I appreciate some of the ideas your putting out there, but can't say I fully agree.

First off, there aren't many people saying that Mega Man can't exist outside of video games, it's just that its been so long since one and the series doesn't seem any healthier as a result of the merchandise and other media treatment its been getting. It's at the very least a bit of a concern.

X's position in Infinite's story is dubious and he didn't play nearly as large of a role as the advertisement and demos would lead people to believe. It would have been difficult for them to ignore X in this game as they didn't have much else to offer, literally just Jedah as far as new characters from Capcom's side are concerned, and a playable version of Mega Man was by far the most requested character from the last game, despite all of the garbage statements Niitsuma spouted off that were clearly not true, such as Mega Man not being in 3 because he didn't rank high enough in their polls.

That said simply having X in Infinite is a step up from 3, so I'd think of it as a wash.

Finally, if waiting for Inafune to play his cards was really what Capcom was doing then I don't think it was a wise decision at all.

They really should have used Smash to their advantage when it was more timely. Smash is bigger than anything Capcom has and has ever done to promote Mega Man on their own. Smash trumps Infinite several times over and even their biggest franchises can't compete with what Smash 4 sold. Yet they had so little to offer at the time to capitalize on it, it feels like one of the biggest cases of wasted potential I can think of in recent memory.

I appreciate the optimistic view point, I just can't say I agree with everything you're saying gives reason to be optimistic. That said, I'm willing to wait till December. But that'll be it for me.

    5. It's amazing how little perspective people have here. Everyone is talking like they're battered and oppressed while people in parts of the world are rationing water after they've had their homes destroyed. We're talking about a video game character here. Yes, it's a character which has been influential to me since childhood, but my head isn't so far up my butt that I'm going to stay all bent out of shape about it. Some sound and positive arguments were presented above, but (as people do when they have no real counter argument) key points were not even addressed. If you're so over Mega Man: what are you doing reading this blog and typing in the comments section? Enjoy wallowing in your negativity, while I enjoy having access to basically every major Mega Man game on modern consoles (which is a thing few 30-year-old game characters can boast) and my collection of high-quality figures and collectibles. Boo hoo, life is so sad ... when I turn off my life-sized Mega Buster it makes the Mega Man's death sound ... so poignant.

      Deplorable fallacies.

First: No one here is really done with Megaman, mostly only with Capcom after this TGS.

Second: No one here was talking about tragedies around the world and they have no relationship with this conversation.
Bringing them up is a disrespectful attempt at using them as tools for your arguments.

Third: no one here said they are losing sleep over Megaman's death. You are the one claiming this is happening with your exaggerations. God forbid people express their frustations without being implied as Drama queens for no reason by a condescending person.

You gave a lot of fallacies in your post, but that is all you did. Easily dismissed. By all means, go have your fun with your things and be happy with no new Megaman games ever coming for you to play outside of fangames.

"It's amazing how little perspective people have here."
Maybe people are only tired of being delusional and expect for the best when Capcom has given no good signs for Megaman's future? By comparison, optimism in this situation looks like having little perspective.
"Everyone is talking like they're battered and oppressed while people in parts of the world are rationing water after they've had their homes destroyed."
Seriously? Are you really going to go so far as using this cheap tactic? What the people you mentioned have to do with this? Why do you think you can gain points by using the suffering of others as a way to dismiss our opinions? And who is this everyone you are talking about?
" We're talking about a video game character here. Yes, it's a character which has been influential to me since childhood, but my head isn't so far up my butt that I'm going to stay all bent out of shape about it."
Clearly the one blowing things out of proportion to fit his narrative is you, though.
"Some sound and positive arguments were presented above, but (as people do when they have no real counter argument) key points were not even addressed. "
What arguments? Most people trying to be positive were doing it for their own reasons that don't require the agreement of everybody that isn't as positive. Besides, what arguments are you really presenting here? Your strawman of drama queens or the cheesy comparison with people suffering horrors in this world? Your arguments are not worth defending against, they are practically concessions of defeat.
"If you're so over Mega Man: what are you doing reading this blog and typing in the comments section? "
Except no one is over Mega Man, people were only talking about how they feel regarding Capcom's actions.
"Enjoy wallowing in your negativity, while I enjoy having access to basically every major Mega Man game on modern consoles (which is a thing few 30-year-old game characters can boast) and my collection of high-quality figures and collectibles."
Good for you, but it is weird you felt the need to bring up this. Do you think this collection of yours makes your opinion and point of view more special or something? Do you think you are better than other fans because you are satisfied with what you have while other fans would want more things like, you know, a real new Megaman game? If that is the case, then go ahead and enjoy your delusions of grandeur.
" Boo hoo, life is so sad ... when I turn off my life-sized Mega Buster it makes the Mega Man's death sound ... so poignant. "
Are you trying to mock angry Megaman fans or something? If that is the case then how silly and weak. Honestly, if you find Megaman fans who are angry with Capcom so laughable and came here only to mock us and give fallacies then why are you even reading this blog post and typing in the comments sections? Just go play with your Megacollection, instead. We are clearly not worth of your time, which is a line of thinking you have in common with Capcom.

  25. They should release something, but do it with panache. comunicate about it, to solicite interest, not from us, but from video games audiance in general. Mega man is a popular name in itself, but even if i talk to people on a relatively "geek" forum, not everyone have at least played a megaman game. i myself have discovered it by chance when i was 14 (i knew it by name, and had watched a few episode of the battle network anime on tv when i was in elementary school, but that was all), My neighbour broke his nintendo DS, and since he was not planing to buy a new one, he just gave me all his games, among them MMZXA and StarForce 1. i would have probably not even knew about theses games otherwise despite how much time i spent playing on my DS back then (hint: too much time). and the neighbour knew megaman because his dad had the olds game on NES and had him play it. but enough of my life story, what i'm saying is, a megaman game might work with a good comunication behind it. It's sad, but nowadays you need some advertising to make it work.
Don't know who it was who said they could'nt make ZX3 because zx did'nt do well enough because too many peoples pirated the games instead of buying it, but that's not it, it did'nt do well enough because they did'nt advertised it. i know a crapload of people who have a DS, but only 2 including me who have a megaman game on it. same for the X games that came out on ps2.
Of course, advertising cost money, and just comunicating would not automatically make it work, and Capcom know it so that's probably why they did'nt take the risk to do so, too scared that the risk won't pay.
Yet i think they should take it once, and if they where to do it, even for all the cancelling and stuff they did, yes i would support them with it.
