Game Grumps Take on Mega Man X7

So Egoraptor and JonTron, the Game Grumps, decided it was time to check out Mega Man X7. Why? Because the worst games make up some of the best episodes of Game Grumps. As per usual, this one is ridiculously silly. Lots of profanity and shouting. Better keep that volume button at the ready.

(Fun fact: Did you know Egoraptor used to be a contributing staff member for Atomic-Fire, the primordial Mega Man Network? It's true.)

  6. As much as I like Egoraptor, I'm not a big fan of Game Grumps.

As comments have pointed out, Jon is just atrocious at playing games, and part of this is because he's too busy talking with Arin so they end up with terrible gameplay.

Another problem is that their discussions often become derailed to really random topics that aren't relevant to the game at all. So not only is the gameplay painful to watch, but the commentary just becomes meaningless (if you want to talk about Red Dead Redemption, then make a LP of RDR. It shouldn't take the entire length of Zero's intro stage).

One good point a comment pointed out is that Jon doesn't even have a chance to form his own opinion about the game. Egoraptor primes him that the consensus is X7 is a terrible game. While true, what you end up with is them caring very little about trying to play the game, on top of needless nitpicking.

Seriously, just because X7 is a bad game as whole, doesn't mean you can blame the game for sucking at disabling lasers/gate in the intro stage. Or constantly jumping into the bee miniboss as if the second time will work.

Egoraptor praises X1 for having an extremely good intro stage that teaches the player without explicitly telling them how to play. And yet Jon just completely runs into everything without any effort put into actually learning the mechanics. Does he expect the game to play itself?

  7. @Soultrigger: X7 is not that bad of a game. MML&2 on the other hand are pieces of garbage.

The only reason people obsess over the Legends series now is because they got the what I like to call 'don't know what you've got till it's gone syndrome'.

I remember a time when Legends was absolutely hated by fans and critics alike, now its this charming evolution to the franchise, that needs a sequel to the oh so dire cliffhanger *please*(=_=)...

Soon after that drama's done, you'll see people saying, X7 had a few kinks but with them ironed out it was innovative and would make a great game.

Well, F the fans that don't know what or how to assess what they want. It happened to Classic and Legends and is starting to happen to ZX and X and will eventually happen to the action RPGs.

  9. Egoraptor also rolled with the crowd that did those Mega Man epilogues waaaaaaay back in the day. Sinister Six I believe.

  10. @Anon:I'm not really sure why my opinion on Legends matters since I never brought it up. I do really like Legends even when it came out, but I don't obsess over it.

And actually, I do agree with you that X7 had some innovative ideas such as 2D/3D hybrid gameplay, but unfortunately they were executed terribly and as a result, X7 is a bad game. Capcom should've made sure to polish their risky endeavor before rushing it out to the market. As Miyamoto once said: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad"

Anyways, if you think X7 is a good game, okay, you are entitled to that opinion. I am merely stating my opinion and echoing what I perceive as the majority opinion of the fanbase. I'd rather not spend my time arguing why I think X7 is bad or statistically pooling the opinions of Mega Man players to try and prove that most people view X7 as a bad game.

Game Grumps aren't even good let's players. OR comedians. OR gamers.

  12. "X7 is not that bad of a game. MML&2 on the other hand are pieces of garbage."

    Confirmed for troll.

X7 hate is overblown, certainly, but the point is it just isn't a good game. it's frustrating at best, and not in the X6 way, where at least it played good, despite it throwing the kitchen sink at you. X7 is slow, monotonous, uninspired, (for the most part. Cyber Field was okay)and just a bad excuse for a 3D megaman game when Legends already translated the formula to 3D (despite turning it into an RPG Dungeon crawler, the basic run'n'jump'n'shoot ghameplay was there, and it's physics were not as clumsy or broken as X7's, where they physics engine is literally broken, making dash-wall kicks unusable.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Soultrigger: What are you talking about? I don't care about your opinions on X7 or Legends. I used Legends as an example for it being the most recent and relatable to the topic.

The point is the fans from this community are fickle and change all the time. Their opinions should hold little value to the developers or other outside gamers interested in trying a certain game in the series. The MM fans outside of merch don't even get MM large sales, the casuals do. Capcom should just make games for customers just in general, and do things that they feel is right, and not even worry about this broken fanbase. If the fans like it, hay that's great, if not, F'em and look at the sales data or opinions from informative customers. If they fail they fail, if they succeed they succeed but never rely on these "fans" for support. Heck only now are a select few starting to think 'ah...maybe MM2 isn't as good as its praised to be, from a objective standpoint.'

As for my opinion on X7. I don't think X7 is a great game not even good, its decent. No game in the world is as bad as people make X7 out to be.

  14. "Legends already translated the formula to 3D, and it's physics were not as clumsy or broken as X7's"

    Confirmed for troll.

X7 hate is overblown, certainly, but the point is it just isn't that bad of a game. it's frustrating to some at worst. X7 is not the slowest 3D game and pretty much on par with Legends in run and jump speed physics with legends being more floaty, while Legends had an expansive world that had monotonous battles and enemies you had to fight in uninspired level designs that didn't complement the slow speed (oh and lack of any substantial inspiring music for any kind of energy.) For the most part the town was okay. Legends was just a bad excuse for a 3D Mega Man game with little to nothing to do with previous installments when Super Mario 64 already successfully translated the 2D platformer formula to 3D despite being the first to do so the basic run'n'jump' gameplay was there, and it's physics were not as broken as Legends, where the physics engine is literally broken, making targeting and L-Dash impractical.

Oh btw it was easy to flip your broad baseless statements against you. It would also be wise to stop calling people trolls less you wanna look even more ignorant than you do now.

  15. @Anon: Funny the reviews say Legends 1 and 2 were good games, generally holding 7s and 8s for the original versions. Dunno what you're talking about there. 7s and 8s are good/great scores.

Also the fan bit... I'll fairly argue this was the point where we had the retarded part of the fanbase emerge and say 'If it isn't Classic and/or if it's not a 2D platformer, it's not Megaman'

But then I found these comments of Legends >=< X7 to be even better.
A nice coincidence, seeing as how I recently played and beat both X7 and L1.

First off, who the heck cares about gamerankings from official pubications as if they were reliable? Also at the time of the first Legends' launch, the reviews were tainted (as they a lot of the time are) by some publications because of the close association it had with Playstation, and even then the scores were decent, but the actual reviews panned the game and the direction it was heading with the series (and no I won't post them, find the quotes and read the reviews yourself.) the reviewers had a motive for the promotion of some of the Legends games at the time (I am not gonna go into detail because its too much) and X7 is almost still universally 1 (if that low and in occasion high) score below the average scores of Legends games, while reviewers praised its attempts at the newer generation consoles.

As for the fans, yeah for the last time that is what I'm saying. The fans are inconsistent and unreliable.

If you really want good reviews look at the independent reviewers that analyze the games in depth without bias and point out individual details, then come back and tell me if Legends is that good of a game in comparison to X7.

If I were to sit and explain the problems with Legends games, it would take pages upon pages in the comments, so I'm not gonna do that.

I also went off on Legends too harshly, while its not my type of game(s), with some polish (just like X7) it could be great from a gameplay perspective. Legends fans need to step off their pedestal, its nowhere near a traditional Mega Man game transitioned into 3D, if that's the argument X7 wins hands down.

Yea, basically this. You have to understand that Legends was only the third incarnation of Mega Man, so people at the time were hesitant to accept another series that wasn't representative of their interests (i.e. 2D sidescrolling/platforming). It's not surprising people were 2D purists at the time since those sentiments made sense within the context of the available games released.

  22. My first X game that I played, did in fact, happened to be X7. But it wasn't my first experience with the X games.

A friend of mine showed me the X series via X4. Way back when I was only a Ruby Spears Mega Man fan. (I was a Legends fan, but I was young back then and didn't make the connection that Legends was a Mega Man game. I just knew I like it) It wasn't until X7 came out that I really hopped on the train.

Yes, looking back now, X7 wasn't the best game. But for what it's worth, I did enjoy X7 (even if it was annoying at various points.)

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Anon: I played both X7 and Legends when they came out. X7 was definitely a worse title. And I can easily sum up the 2 things that instantly makes X7 the worst X title and worse than Legends.

You have to unlock the titular character aka Megaman X. That's like being a Mario game and being told you have to unlock Mario to play as him. It makes no sense and was unneeded. In addition, it's still the same set up as the previous X and Classic games.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Anonymous 2:31: Uhmmm... Super Mario 64 DS?? It's good to know your reason for hating the game more than Legends is for a reason that has nothing to do with the gameplay. Also Axl in terms of gameplay is infinitely more relatable to X than Trigger (or Volnuts or whatever) is to any other Mega Man. When Axl beats bosses he gets a new weapon, he can pressure jump, ground dash, air-hash, hover and wall-bounce/climb. Axl has long range weaponry that can change trajectory depending on firing size or weapons of use by switching them out in battle. He has rapid fire similar to the way Bass' works. The main differences between him and X are the stories appearances, and voices and even then not to a large extent. Now for Trigger. In appearance: parts of his body are blue (has two gun arms that can be equipped with guns simultaneously but can't be retracted or changed at any point and time in the game.) In story: he's a robot (I think,) has an adopted sister named Roll (that the story wants him to hump.) In gameplay: he can upgrade himself (through items collected by dungeon crawling or purchases from a store, or items combined through Roll,) can shoot and jump......Oh last thing, his name is Mega Man, that's it!! By those traits outside of story anyone from Jet Force Gemini could qualify to be Mega Man in terms of gameplay if they were named Mega Man. What you said about X7 is like me saying, 'I don't like Legends because you have to unlock his helmet' *gep gep gep*

I'll name another thing wrong with Legends just so I don't look like a mindless hater. The lock-on mechanic doesn't compliment the rotating mechanic. For example if you have a cluster of enemies and the ones behind or to the sides of your position take priority, the lock wouldn't recognize your intentions and the rotate doesn't give you enough scope and the speed of the turns may force you to react instantly by preforming an uncontrollable, long range, clumsy roll to avoid damage, which can then put you in a worse position than you already were in, especially in stages that have hazards. This isn't practical gameplay design in the long run.

@Cyberguy: By the way I'm not some other cyberguy you've been having a love fetish with. Hope off.

Oh I can't wait for the future when Legends fans aren't so butthurt, and look back in retrospective and realize just how awful the game design choices introduced in those games were. I'm done debating this, you guys debate like children. *WHAEEee* 'I can't play as Mega Man because of some very simple unlocking procedures' *WHAaaee* 'a maverick intended to sound like a demented broken robotic hyena makes my head hurt'

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Anon: But with Mario 64 DS, you HAD to unlock Mario in order to do Bowser levels. Meaning before you even fought Bowser the first time, it was mandatory to unlock Mario. Meaning, out of 150 stars, you got about 5% of the way of the game before being able to get Mario. With X7, you went more than 50% of the game without X unless you did non-mandatory 64 rescues. There was a large difference between what 64 did, and what X7 did.

I don't buy X games to play as someone else. I BUY THEM TO PLAY AS X. Just because Axl can do more than him does not make it a reasonable excuse to lock him away. It also doesn't help that Axl had terrible voicework as well. In addition, your argument about being'relatable' doesn't really apply since it's in a series(Classic and X) where any playable character is capable of that to some degree. If X is going to be locked away, of course they're going to add a feature to Axl to lessen the void left by X.

Also I'm going to assume by the first half of the Legends hate rant there you also hate BN and SF, and you're one of the varying 'purist' fans. Meaning I'm now done with you.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @7:01 PM: Well you'd be would be wrong, I like Battle Network. I will not be explaining myself on why I like it.

So there's a criteria now, for how much effort or time it takes to unlock a title character? How bout you're just pulling stuff out of thin air to justify you opinions? There are entire Mario games where you never play as Mario but Mario is the title character as he is central to the plot, Super Mario World 2 for one. Heck even the MML3 demo you guys were clamoring about would have had you playing as another character, would that impact your opinion of the game significantly? There is nothing set in stone that Mega Man X has to have X as a playable character, you the "fans" made that garbage up. X could be the title character based off of story importance alone. Yes there is precedence that he has been playable throughout the series but that is not concrete. That is like saying 'when I play Metroid I want to play as metroids'

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Anon: If I recall, interviews for Legends 3 said the demo would not be in the final game and acting as a prequel, meaning it was justified why Barett(I can't remember his name) was the playable character. So no, not all of us were being retards, thanks for grouping us together by assuming like an uniformed man.

'Yes there is precedence that he has been playable throughout the series but that is not concrete' Oh you mean X1-5 and Xtreme 1 and 2? And the fact the back of the game's box showcased X being used IN THE OPENING STAGE.

At the same time, while you make a point about titles like Super Mario World 2, the thing is THE BOX ACCURATELY TELLS ME WHAT I GET. So when I buy Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 or Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the boxes tell me 2 things. I'm using Wario/Yoshi and that Mario isn't the controlled character. X7 does not tell you on the box that X is locked away, and it does not tell you you won't be able to use him for 50% of the game. X7 LIES TO YOU.

'That is like saying 'when I play Metroid I want to play as metroids''

Now that's pulling stuff out of air to justify your end.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @9:52 PM
    4 things

1: The demo of Mega Man Legends 3 is still called Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype, so even if it was a prequel he'd still be the title character.

Yes that is exactly what I mean including X6, by precedence. Like I said before it's their but not concrete on defining X as a playable mainstay. This all doesn't matter though as X7 lets you, you know, play as him.

2: You can play as X in the intro stage. The cover never showed you that you could play as Glide Armor, does that mean it's lying about it being in the game? No. They don't need to show everything in the game on the box for you to know it's possible or vice versa. What you have to do is play a saved file that can access X from the start to play as him in the Highway like advertised. The game didn't lie to you, you lied to yourself. You keep adding to the criteria of not being able to play as title characters, I can't wait to see what's next.

3: And how am I pulling stuff out of air? You specifically said you played games because you wanted to play title characters because that's the way it should be. I retorted by giving you an example of a successful series that specifically does the opposite, exemplifying how somethings or ones can be title characters based on their significance in the story alone. Zelda tells you a legend and gives you advice (if that) and she is the title character without being playable most of the time. X is the blueprint and foundation to every single Reploid in existence, not even scratching his other achievements and your saying he can't be the title character off of that, when others are for much less? Gimme a break

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Anon

#1. The interviews blatantly said Volnutt was still on the moon in the prequel and partly revolves around efforts to get him down. In addition, Capcom reps hinted to Hoffman that Volnutt may have been unlockable. So you're argument in 3? Just benefited this.

    2. So a file already done though. My point still stands. You had to get through more than 50% to be able to use X in that stage.

    3. At this point in the series, it was clear the focus was on the iteration of Megaman himself for that series. Classic had focused around Classic. Battle Network had emerged by now, focusing on Megaman.EXE. Megaman Zero had emerged, and like the title said, focused on Zero. Megaman X7 failed to follow the trend that X1-6 and Xtreme 1+2 had created.

  30. I can't say I care much for Game Grumps, honestly. I don't get much out of it. I like Egoraptor's Awesome series videos, but I just don't find the Let's Play video style of Game Grumps that amusing I guess.

As for X7...it's definitely my least favorite of the X series. As a diehard fan of X as a character, I found it rather insulting, to be honest. In the rest of the series, he's painted as a gentle pacifist who is pushed into fighting. But when the situation called for it, he did what he had to do. In X7, his personality was insufferable, and the English voice work for him didn't help at all. Plus, most annoying of all, you had to unlock X! That didn't make any sense to me. I was super excited about MMX hitting the PS2 and the possibility of new gameplay styles with 3D graphics, but it just didn't "feel" right. The level design just felt like a rushed mess. The bosses were never fun to fight, nor did I ever really feel that sense of exhilaration that I had with other X games. After how disappointed I was with X6, I was really depressed, but that made X8 all the more awesome. I really admire how well X8 turned out and think it's an excellent example of how to do the series right. X7 was rushed and poorly done. X8 was polished and refined. It's pretty easy to see when comparing the presentation of the games--everything about X8's level design is more thoughtful, in my opinion.

As for Legends, I'm a fan. If anything, I'd describe it as a Mega Man for the Zelda lover. I loved that I was able to explore. I suppose in that case, I was willing to adapt to the cumbersome controls (in MML1's case, anyway), because I loved the sense of adventure. The characters were incredibly expressive and the world was just fun to dive into. Plus you had all of the parts and items to find and use. MML2 is one of my favorite games ever, it improved the controls a bit, and increased the sense of depth and immersion. I was willing to accept that it was different than other Mega Man games, because well...it's different. It didn't bother me. If I wanted another MM or MMX, I'd ask for another MM or MMX. Personally, I don't much care for the BN or Star Force series, but not because they were different than Mega Man. I expected them to be different. They just weren't my cup of tea. I can still recognize them as good games (and I did like Network Transmission), and some of my friends really love them.

  31. @11:43 AM
First of all stop writing 50% of the game it's getting annoying, you obviously have never played it or watched it, and went off of stupid rumors online perpetrated to make the game look bad. I actually played it to make final decisions about the game. Let me explain this to you form someone who's actually played it. Yes, you have to play more than 50% to play in the first Highway as X, but you do not have to go through 50% of the game or complete the very simple and natural objective of 64rescues, (that was put in to encourage you to sample various stages)to unlock X. You simply "BEAT TWO MAVERICK BOSSES."

And yes MML3 Prototype does benefit my argument, because my argument is that title character+non-playable or unlockable=no problem with the gameplay. Story maybe, appeal maybe, but never gameplay.

    @11:03 PM

This anonymous right here is the absolute definition of the standardized group thinker sheep that has no clue what he's talking about with his words and opinions being completely useless, to gauge the actual problems with the games.

What you described you liked about X, is the absolute most accurate description of the representation of X in X7. Also VOICE ACTING REALLY? How about MML2 has Trigger using a lighter and more feminine voice than Roll, in the english version that can't be switched to its native japanese? How about X4 (which by the way has an average rating rank very close to X7 by official widely accepted publications) which is considered widely among the top 5 greatest Mega Man games ever created by the fans, has some of the most notoriously bad voice acting in video game history? Like I said many times, you can hate the story all you want (even if your complaints are unfounded and outrageous) but that doesn't affect the gameplay nothing at all. All of what you said sounds like group think drivel, with broad statements not directly pertaining to anything to disparage any sign of unique individual thought and analysis about the game. I'm fin with your opinion its just the reasons that are all contradictory and without merit or a solid base.

Please, PLEASE for the love of everything in the universe, if you are a Zelda fan, play any Zelda over any MML. Start with Ocarina of Time, a much, much, much, much, much, much MUCH (I can not stress this enough) better game than any MML game out right now. And no MML is not for Mega Man fans either. With BN&SF you get boss references, character inspirations, musical styles, gameplay inspired elements, theme inspired elements all indicative of a Mega Man game. With MML you get maybe a small fraction of that. MMBN is literally an RPG set to build around the MM formula its MM's RPG spinoff, it never superimposed on the main games by shoehorning itself into the story, it is set in an alternate reality/universe drawing inspiration from the main games. BN is literally an optional side addition to the franchise for people looking for something different while still keeping a great amount of essence from the main games to relate, its an exemplary spinoff. Unlike MML which is the exact opposite of all those things.

I've been watching this the whole time but seriously? Battle Network did not follow the original formulas that much. If anything, the customization options of the folders and buster was more similar to that of Legends. It was a linear story, the standard elemental cycle of RPGs, it had an overworld, it had areas to explore, GRINDING FOR MONEY WAS INVOLVED. It was closer to Legends than Classic and X. And Starforce had no references to Classic and X other than POTENTIALLY General Auriga from SF2's postgame. The bosses and characters in BN were more just to prevent what happened with Legends were people like you b*tched about the lack of references to previous games. Why do you think Glyde even existed, Yai was given the name she recieved, and Servbot references were everywhere? To please the Legends fans. That's all. It merely used fanservice to get those that didn't like the lack of it in Legends to buy it.

God forbid Megaman Legends do what Donkey Kong Country Returns/Mario Sunshine did and essentially do away with most mainstay enemies and create new ones so the game felt NEW instead of relying on the legacy/reputation of it's predecessors aka BN relying on Classic up until riding the X4 pole in 5 and 6.

Also Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time.

"It wouldn't be lifeless like Mega Man X7 was. Honestly, what was that crap? Mega Man X7 blows guys. And it was 3D, too. Just because it could be. You know they didn't want to make it 3D and they were just like"

Doesn't he claim not to know about it in the video?

  34. @Numberman: SF was a natural evolution to BN like X to Classic. The foundation for reference was already established with BN, like you said, there is no need for constant references. It can have new characters gameplay etc. in the vein of the established franchise without it constantly reminding you directly that it came from it. And of course BN has a completely new style of gameplay, it was specifically designed to be an optional spin-off not a direct sub-series. It drew elements from the action of the 2D games, a lot of tools and mechanics were inspired from what was established before in the franchise. There are many, but to name a few, they took out platforming in favor of other evasive elements to identify with the evasive and attack elements in the 2D games, that was their source of inspiration. While at the same time being original, and coming up with new ideas of its own. For example, instead of rock paper scissors on stage select, its that concept in the elemental usages used in the games, or the Battle Chips or Cards that counter each other. When you beat a boss, instead of getting their main ability for your use, you get them as an assist using their main attack. Some cards were inspired off of weapons used in the 2D games like swords and guns for range management, or Invis for invisible evasiveness, ShotStar's meteor rain and such. Instead of armors you get Style changes, Soul Unisons etc. You get the point, it draws inspiration while being unique and different. BN so far is the closest thing to how a turn-based RPG inspired off of Mega Man would be like, even X Command Mission doesn't come as close.

"Also Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time."

  35. If you wanna measure somebody´s IQ, just ask that person if MegaMan X7 is a good game. Answering "YES" it means really low IQ, period.

  36. Measure someone's entire IQ based on their opinion on a single video game.....Very smart indeed. Either way if that's the case?

Than if you wanna measure somebody´s IQ, just ask that person if MegaMan Legends 1 or 2 are good games. Answering "YES" it means really low IQ, period.

^This is the best argument dumb children on this site can come up with for X7. So I'll indulge.

  38. Okay, what the heck...

Can you seriously judge someone's IQ just by whether or not that have enjoyment or sympathy over s single game?

I've known someone who likes ET (with very valid reason, mind you,) and he's the smartest human being I've ever met. Granted I've been on the Internet for over 6 years and have a large social life, that's saying a lot.

Nonetheless, you people are seriously making fools of yourselves with immature backtalk, simpleminded vocabulary, and the unacceptable inability to accept each other's opinions.

Look, I know both Mega Man X7 and the Mega Man Legends have their faults, but that's no excuse for you people to whine over who's right and who's wrong.

Seriously, this discussion is a broken embarrassment to the highly acclaimed Mega Man fanbase. It's something I'd expect from a Sonic fanbase discussion site. (No exaggerations; Believe me, I know what that looks like.)

Now, I'm not trying to insult people here, but please; stop embarrassing yourselves, speak maturely (refer to a dictionary and a thesaurus if you need them,) and respect each other's opinions.

    Thank you and goodbye.
