Want An Operate Shooting Star Translation Patch?

To the dismay of some, Capcom has chosen not bring to America Rockman EXE: Operate Shooting Star, the "enhanced" port of the original Mega Man Battle Network. However, that's not enough to keep one fan down.

A buddy of mine is toying with the notion of translating OSS into English. However, before work can begin on a patch, he'd like to know if this is something the community would want, otherwise it's not really worth the effort. So, question for you is, would you like an English patch for OSS?

The process of creating a patch would take at least three to four months, he notes. Most of the work involves lifting the script from the original GBA game, making the necessary changes, and translating the new material introduced in OSS that wasn't present in the original game (new dialog, new chips, etc.). Again, this will only happen if he sees quite a bit of positive reception to the idea. What do you think? Sound off in the comments!

  1. Nice but I rather to buy the cartridge from Capcom because I like to collect them as collector's items. I can play it on emulator but it doesnt mean I am happy. I am very disappointment in capcom of usa not to bring it. DISAPPOINTMENT! Japan rules and the best than Capcom of USA -- FOREVER!

  2. Yes! All I've got is a DSi and i've never played MMBN1, so this would be cool.

  3. Yes! It is a yes for ever! A job that Capcom has not done, the fans should do! I give my support to Capcom being against or not.

    ReplyDelete
  4. If he wants to put in the time an effort, I'd play it.

Uh, who said it was CoA's call to not localize the game? Also, all the special features in Star Force 3 that were mostly taken out in the non-Japanese versions? That was CoJ's decision, and CoA didn't want to remove features.

As for the subject at hand, yes I would love to see a translated and properly localized version of Operate Shooting Star. By "properly localized" I mean "use the correct English names for characters damnit" :P

  14. I think it's going to be a tremendous waste of his time (3-4 months, holy moly). Since it's already been illustrated that this game is just Battle Network with a scene added on.

I'm not against it because that's retarded, but its of my opinion that there's certainly better uses of one's time than localizing this game.

I'm not interested in playing it either way.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'd love to see this happen, however I do have one question if this becomes a reality.

Will names and places be left like they are in their original Japanese games (eg. Netto, Rockman.EXE etc) or will he adopt the CoA naming scheme? (Lan, MegaMan.EXE etc)

    ReplyDelete
  16. totally interested... its been a while, i miss exe

    ReplyDelete
  17. He has my support. But I'm really in it more for the extra scnario translation than anything else >>;
Protodude, could you ask your friend to translate the extra scenario even if he doesn't make an english patch?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sure I would love a translation patch!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  19. that would be great and then I would see what there saying.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @Lex

Lets just hope he goes with the Lan and Megaman.EXE one, Because i'm pretty sure someone else will make a ROM of the game using the Japaneese games, if this guy wont.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Actually, i can also do a translation patch of OSS, as i know the Text Format. I would say Yes because i never played EXE1.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just in case Proto's friend doesn't do it, you should LuigiBlood!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sorry,but he shouldn't waste his time

If you want to play MMBN1 in english, you can play it on the GBA

OSS is just the same, with extra scenario (which was terrible)

If he can't rip the text and put it into the OSS cart or something then he really should not waste his time

    ReplyDelete
  24. If NDS emulators were any good, I really wouldn't mind. However, I've really not found anything good. I was disappointed by them not bringing the port over here, but at the same time I think we can all say we were even more disappointed about the port really not being enhanced at all.

As has been mentioned many times - if you're not going to enhance the port, at least do what was done in the Zero Collection and make it a game collection - I wouldn't have minded a collection of EXE 1, 2, and a mono-version edition of 3 all on one cartridge.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well if they could figure out the tricky compressions, that would be great alone. The text format for the first game was easy so that shouldn't be a problem. The recompressing might be tricky.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, by the way protodude, I'm willing to help out as well, any way I can get in touch with him/her?

    ReplyDelete
  27. "To the dismay of absolutely no one, Capcom has chosen not bring to America Rockman EXE: Operate Shooting Star."

    Fixed this for you.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I say go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Um I know this might be a stupid question but, well we play the game like on the internet? Also is this even legal? lol sorry if my questions are stupid :p

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Anon under my comment :
Yeah but no, because i'm already working on a translation, the french translation of Megaman Zero Collection.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sure, why not. I'd like to at least know what they're saying in the new SSRockman chapter.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes :) I would be very grateful.

    ReplyDelete
  33. All the way! I wouldn't say no to an English patch to a Japanese game. It would also be nice to see the original names and no typos in an English game.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd love this patch to. But it makes me laugh at how many people said they'd play it with the patch. Either that, or they willfully admit to being pirates(Not saying I'm not one). Can't use this patch on the physical copy, remember.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I liked BN1, so I'd play it

    ReplyDelete
  36. Honestly, I'd be against it. OSS is mainly just a port with an extra scene, not a full-blown remake. The option to play the original EXE1 in English is and has been available for years.

If he does go for it, I would give it a try though, seeing how I never played EXE1.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Soultrigger: That makes no sense. You'd play it if he did it, but you're against it?

Why be against it? Why not be neutral?

    My vote: Yes please.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'd love to give it a try.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm glad to see that ur willing to spend time on translating it but it's not worth ur time, many people have already played BN1, some havn't, the best anwser for is download a rom of BN1 and play it on a VBA emulator, plus DS emulators suck and lag like hell. Point is I would not play this game even with a english patch unless someone creates a DS emulator that can run DS games with little to no lag.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Heh heh, reading through the comment thread I'm having flashbacks to when the game was first announced and the firestorm of Broken Fanbase that descended on the news like a pack of rabid wolverines. Despite the fact that no one knew what the game even WAS yet.

But yeah, I'd be interested in seeing an English patch.

Also, anyone who says "Just play it on the GBA, it's the same game" clearly doesn't recall that the original EXE is right around 9 or 10 years old now, and Megaman fans that have been introduced to the franchise with the Star Force or ZX games may not have actually PLAYED the first EXE. A younger gamer who cut his teeth on the DS is more likely to play a DS "remake+" than go to the effort of hunting down a game that's one hardware generation and nearly a decade old.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's not worth it really. If you want to play BN1, buy the game. The extra scenario isn't a good enough reason to make a translation patch for OSS.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If you don't want it, hold your peace. There are those of us that do want it!

    ReplyDelete
  43. @...Anon:

There are good DS emulators that run without lag. Especially with 2D games like EXE OSS.

    ReplyDelete
  44. "The extra scenario isn't a good enough reason to make a translation patch for OSS."
For once I agree with this one, but hey if you young people want to play it, then suit yourself. Also, how many times must I say this before you people understand? OSS is NOT a remake, it is both a Port & a Lie. Look up "Zero Mission" & learn the frickin difference.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd rather it be translated than just left alone.

So yeah, I support this 100%.

Whoever's gonna be complaining about this should seriously stop.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Also, for the people who are saying, "Don't do it, it's just EXE1 with a new scenario". I HAVE to say this to you people:

At LEAST it was SOMETHING NEW. You same people yelled at me when I said that Zero Collection is just ports and barely anything "new" added to it besides a shoddy button-customization add-on and the Mod Cards "turned on". (which could be done back in USA Zero 3s as long as you had an AR or something similar, much like Star Force 3's NKG and Rezon/Purpose cards)

EXE OSS also rebalanced the battle system to be similar to EXE2 and EXE5 put together. Adding (*) code Battle Chips, new voice acting for Rockman, Netto and Subaru/SS Rockman (They are NOT reused voices from EXE5DS. Listen to them, you'll see that they are indeed different), a few of the animations were fixed up and improved, the music is slightly better quality, there's a new multiplayer mode that can be done with Single-card play, the VS mode is MUCH easier to set up now than before, there's Cut-In Counters for dim-screen cards (even Recovery), and of course, there's a brand new character to play as with his own unique play style.

So there you go. That's a lot of new and improved things that made EXE OSS much more worth it than Zero Collection. For all you haters out there, I just broke it down for you.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes please >< I love megaman and I would love to get a tranlsation of OSS even though its almost the sam as BN1 :D

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not worth it. How about just translating the SSRockman add ons and calling it a day? Otherwise the people who don't read Japanese can just play their MMBN1 carts.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow, this article thread exploded.

Either way, I say do it.

I know there are plenty of people who are unable to go back and play EXE 1, and I'm pretty sure people would rather get a translated ROM of this game rather than the original EXE 1.

Just because OSS did not live up to expectations does not mean that there is no reason to translate this for the community.

And this is coming from someone who ABSOLUTELY HATES OSS.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Translating it would be excellent and I would definitely purchase an Acekard 2i to play it. I say go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  51. yes yes and yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    ReplyDelete
  52. @Saito

Saito, those same people have a right to yell at you cause you won't stop saying how awful Zero Collection is.

Many people and fans of the MegaMan Zero series want this game so badly, yet you won't shut up about how bad it is, when it turns out it got good scores.

So please, keep your opoions to yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Translation would be beyond words in terms of awesomeness, It would be so cool if you followed through with this! I would check everyday to see if it's released! Please! :D

    ReplyDelete
  54. I wouldn't mind playing something like that. I say go for it

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would so use a patch on this game!

    ReplyDelete
  56. The only reason why EXE OSS "didn't live up to expectations" and so on, is because people basically didn't even know what the game was until the final week before release.

Why? Much like many people have said, they couldn't understand Japanese. The trailers, interviews, and articles ALL said that the game was a port of EXE1 with some extra improvements.

It's honestly the North American side's own fault for getting disappointed, when they came up with those overly unbelievable scenarios that obviously weren't going to happen, and actually believing they were.
Then getting shocked when they found out it wasn't in there. :/

Heck, I actually liked EXE OSS. I liked it enough that I actually bought the cart when I found it for $12 at an import shop at my city.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'd rather buy an official Capcom translation, but since that doesn't seem to be happening - go ahead, I think a huge portion of Rockman Exe/MMBN fans would appreciate it :D

    ReplyDelete
  58. OMG please do it!!! it will be super special awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  59. yes it would be so cool to get this translated

    ReplyDelete
  60. Haha, it's hilarious when people give their opinion and then tell people to keep their opinions to themselves. Oh what a messed up internet we surf in.

    ReplyDelete
  61. its disappointing that its not coming on us reason goes same as an anonymous guy who collects megaman game carts, i to collect them :(

but Yes of Course i don just collect them after all
so please push through with this english translation patch prog
your friend have my full support

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yes! I would love a patch for OSS! Do what Capcom never did! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Let me say this :
The Text format of OSS uses Unicode (Little Endian).

    ReplyDelete
  64. This was posted in gbatemp as well.

    http://gbatemp.net/t240853-want-a-rockman-exe-operate-shooting-star-translation-patch?pid=2988737&st=0&#entry2988737

If your pal wanna do this, then fine. but it's not worth the effort. There are better games who need translations.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yes this is an awesome idea since i havn't gotten far in bn1 anyway

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have already played through the original BN1 a billion times (figure of speech, I have catually played it a lot less than that, but certainly more than once), So I won't bother

Also, will this fix any mispellings in the original game, like Bombmans dialouge using chatspeak in one part?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nevermind about the Text Format, the Colisseum Mode uses Unicode, but the game itself uses another format.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase do it, I was looking forward to a translation patch but I only found an anti piracy one please make it! I've been looking forward to one since I knew that Capcom won't release the US and the EU version

    ReplyDelete
  69. @the Anonymous who replied to me:
Sorry, my post indeed contradicted itself. What I meant to say but forgot to mention was that it was not worth the effort of a few months. If people REALLY wanted to play it, they could just play the GBA one. I WOULD play it if he went ahead with the translation seeing how he put the effort into it as well as the fact that the GBA cartridge only has 1 save slot (which my brother took).

    @Saito:
The difference between Zero Collection and OSS is what people expect and what people get. MMZ Collection is, well, a "collection." Anybody who's played Mega Man long enough would know it's just a compilation of games with SOME little extras, usually not worth mentioning. Also, there was fan demand for Zero Collection to begin with.
OSS is just a port of 1 GBA game with an extra RnR scene and SOME improvements, which REALLY do not merit another purchase. It may be our own fault for hyping the game ourselves, but Capcom had the potential to make a full-blown remake. Instead, they took the lazy way out and just ported a game that had no porting demand to begin with.

    ReplyDelete
  70. c'mon man! Do it, PLEASE! I would kill to know how to ripa gba rom and a nds rom to copy the ba script and add some things like clockman script! But unfortunately I don't, so I'm begging you to do it!

    ReplyDelete
  71. @SoulTrigger

Thats true EXE1 wasnt that great and I have the game...why I'm planning to sell it sometime next week.

    Just one main question:

Is this even legal and if Capcom catches word of this arent you afraid they might get upset and there might be consequences?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Nice but I rather to buy the cartridge from Cap com because I like to collect them as collector's items.nice game...That was Co's decision, and Co didn't want to remove features.

    ReplyDelete
  73. yes do it. definitely.
