Live Action Mighty No. 9 Adaptation In The Works

Tim Carter, writer and producer at Contradiction Films (Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Sleeping Dogs), has revealed that he is developing a live action adaptation of Mighty No. 9.

Speaking to Victor Lucas and Scott Jones of EP Daily, Carter says he is currently building the story but would not elaborate if the adaptation is a feature-length film or web series:

"We are building the story right now,” Carter said about the project. “Inafune-san created [Mega Man], and he has now created Mighty Number 9. We don’t have the rights to Mega Man, obviously, but we are working with him on a live action adaptation of it.” He said of Inafune, “I was a little apprehensive about it at first until I got his notes, and thought “Dude, you should be working at Pixar!”"

It should be interesting to see how this pans out. Same with any hypothetical Mega Man adaptation, I sort of feel this might work better as an animated feature. But who knows? Carter could make this work. I suppose we'll just have to wait and find out.

  1. Geezuz calm down there and let the game come out first... the hype train is being pushed too fast here.

  2. After seeing Eddie's production of Megaman, I'm fairly certain I want nothing to do with any more live action adaptions of video games that don't have their tongue rooted firmly in their cheek.

  3. Seriously?! We haven't even seen the game yet! Wait until you know if it's a good subject to pursue, for crying out loud!

  4. I'd seriously reconsider.

Wait to see how much Mighty No.9 catches on with people. See if there's money to be made, or more precisely, money worth spending on a project like this. Pitch it to a major studio and get some CG funding. Live action alone won't cut it.

After seeing the Megaman fan-movie (which I appreciate on it's own fledgling/makeshift level), I can't see putting a grown man in a Beck suit and not having people giggle their butts off. Live action interpretations of video games are like walking a tightrope made of tissue paper: nigh impossible, but with the right person, the right amount of care and know how, it just might be doable.

But jumping haphazardly into a project that's only going to make others look at it and say "this can't be done" or "I don't want to get involved in anything that's going to turn out like this" provides a mindset that defeats ambition even before it has a chance to fight for it's own survival.

I think for the sake of possible future media interpretations of Mighty No.9, they should wait.

  5. You're joking, right? This has to be a joke.

  6. I'm sort of reminded of when Rare were first making Viva Pinata for the Xbox 360, and there was a lot of hype going for it. They even got 4Kids to make a cartoon out of it, which I believe also came out before the game...

It's concerning because Viva Pinata started off with such a hype bang, and then it just sort of quietly dropped dead after a little while, never to be heard of again. Hype isn't always a good thing, I don't really want MN9 to see the same thing.

    1. It's a shame, because both the game and the show weren't half bad. It was just too complicated for kids, and too kiddy for adults.

    2. The other thing though is that Rare hasn't exactly been a great company in recent years ever since they were sold off to Microsoft. Now all I ever see being made is the Kinect Sports games.

  8. WTF?! The game isn't even out yet and there's only rudimentary concepts available about the characters and whatnot, but the frigging...! How do...?!
    ...
    I hate everything.

  9. Not sure what to think of this. It's hard not to feel it's too early for it.
And I agree that live action may not be the best format. Animation or at least CGI seems better.

  10. If I'm not misreading that bit, it sounds like the guy thinks Inafune's notes make the game's story seem Pixar quality. Sounds like plot may well play a somewhat bigger role with the actual game itself, for what that's worth.

  11. If it was a cg movie id be more hyped. But I am really having a hard time picturing this movie in live action. :/
