CG Renders From the Cancelled 'Maverick Hunter' FPS

New assets from Capcom's cancelled Mega Man X first person shooter Maverick Hunter have come to light. The following renders come from the portfolio of Jaehoon Kim, an artist who worked on the project from 2010-2011.

While Jaehoon Kim was responsible for rendering the character, the original concept was designed by Adi Granov (the concept artist behind Iron Man's cinematic universe armor). You can see his original pitch here.

We'll be bringing you more Maverick Hunter goodies in the very near future. Stay tuned!

  1. Thank GOD this was cancelled. The last thing MM needs is attempts like this to "appeal to a western audience". Good Riddance!

    1. I know, right? Aren't we just EXCEEDINGLY lucky? I mean, imagine if this had been greenlit back in 2011 -- it could have forever changed the future of Mega Man. We could have been deprived of all of the truly amazing Mega Man games we've gotten since then! We really dodged a bullet there!

    2. If it bombed it would have further damaged Mega Man's chances of getting any new games.
If it was a success then it is likely all followup Mega Man games would be FPS.

Either way, it would have been bad for the platformer games.

    3. X has a face, watch the trailer. It's a holographic face, it disappears when closing his helmet going i tom l bat mode.

    4. He does have a holographic face when not in combat mode. Thought megaman fans would have seen the trailer.

  2. I think I'm the only one who actually thought that the cancelled Maverick Hunter FPS looked interesting. As for the design, I think it looks cool for what it is. Still better than Mega Man 1's box art...

    1. I'm with you as a long time Megaman fan. It does look interesting. I wish they had the pictures of X with his holographic Human face before he enters combat in the trailer for this game. Also I remember being young and absolutely loving and accepting new concepts on megaman, they always delivered them very well, they were always filled with mystery and tons of questions to be learned, I wish those times were back. I'd always love it when all theses new concepts were actually related to the same timeline, very emotional. Could you imagine what Zero and the Mavericks in this game would look like?

  3. Looks more like a movie version of a Pantheon trooper from the Mega Man Zero series...

    1. @Vhyper1985: That's exactly what I thought of. While the idea of turning Megaman into a FPS didn't excite me, you have to give credit to the artists who think of, design, and create these pieces of art.

  4. God this would've been incredible.

  5. While it's an interesting look,it renders (hah) his character as cold, lifeless, and unlikeable.

I would have been more receptive to this had it been a take on Vile.

  6. I took one look at this and immediately thought of Ultron from the Marvel universe.

This is awful. It looks nothing like X, and there's no human aspect to it, which goes against a core element of the franchise. I'm glad this got cancelled. What was Inafune thinking?
    - Dr. Jerk.

  8. The arms look really awkward to me. It looks kind of stiff having the forearms that long in comparison to the rest of the arm.

  9. The idea of a Mega Man FPS is fine, even making it a bit darker would be fine too.

But there's a point where you go so far off of what you are basing a game off of that you might as well make it something original instead.

In my opinion, Maverick Hunter is one of those games. Or, would have been rather.

    1. Agree. I would not mind a Mega Man FPS, but this...
And there are some official examples that Capcom could have used as reference:
-The battles from Super Adventure Rockman
-The shooting minigames from "Chokkan! Rockman" and "Shooting Star Rockman: Wave Change! On Air!"
And also fanon like Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch.
No need for a redesign or to make it a good shooter. The original Mega Man shooting on robots would be good enough, or an original series with a badass robot that is Mega Man in name only, but is not related to X and other characters.

Although it also doesn't need to be darker, an Elf Wars shooter would be interesting, with an army of Golems and badass bosses and even alternate endings, like Omega having success or failing to get the Dark Elf and other resources, resulting in a more powerful/weaker final boss battle. It also doesn't need to be a full shooter, the gameplay of Deus EX games comes to mind when thinking how a Zero series or Elf Wars game would be in 3D...

  10. If that's X, I'd love to see what a met would've looked like in that game.

  12. Looks cool, but dosen't feel Mega Man

  13. i thought he was ultron from the recent avenger movie. that's abomination is not X or even have anything similar to any megaman incarnations.

  14. I liked the X visor.

his hand turning INTO the gun the way it does was interesting.

overall im sure it would have been fine, if different.

not too keen, that said, on the way his face under the visor was actually some weird holographic projection though

kinda sad we didnt get it. who knows, before prime came out the idea of a FPS metroid was laughable. it spelled "doom" even.

    1. That's my thoughts exactly. Not a fan of the overall idea but would of given it a chance. The only thing I really dislike is the lack of a actual face. The hologram looked terrible. There was talk about his was going to have a human personality(at least compared to his actual human partner), but it would of been very jarring when he looks that ugly. They should of gone for a Robocop look.

I also had way more concern about the enemies and other character designs. If the mavericks bosses looked like just walking tanks or generic T-100 knock outs, then it would of been a deal breaker for me.

  15. Nothing more than just a generic suit of armor with an X carved into its face. Take out the colors and the "Megaman" vanishes.

To think someone thought this was a good idea is just sad. This is shitting all over the identity the franchise built over the years.

  16. This game would have been amazing. Do you haters know what masterpieces could have come from this? For those that don't know metroid was 2d first just like megaman and then Retro Studios came a long and announced the fps metroid game for gamecube. At first people thought it wouldn't be great and some people thought it would be a disaster because it was a fps. Then when the game came out people were pretty much worshiping retro studios. And people wanted more so retro studios gave the masterpiece trilogy of metroid prime.

  17. like I was saying before metroid prime was a amazing success and then retro studios with the help of keji inafune were going to make maverick hunter. It would have been great but capcom was scared that no one would like it because it was different as cancelled it. It would have been great. What I have to say haters is before hating the whole thing look up some more info on game. Open up your mind and explore what potential it had of being the megaman game of the seventh generation of gaming. I am not saying your are going to like it but give it a fair chance. Even if it is just a cancelled game.
