Discotek's 'Ruby-Spears' Mega Man DVD Set Goes Retro

Discotek Media are gearing up to re-release the complete Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon series on DVD this fall. Best of all, though, the set's box art is designed to mimic classic NES packaging. It's even got authentic wear and tear! Brilliant!

The four disc set is due out on September 30th, 2014. Pricing details are forthcoming.

  1. Nice! I'm actually glad I held out. I used to see the DVD sets at Fry's but was always hoping for them to get a little cheaper. Now it's getting a nice re-release. I'll be sure to pick this one up. Hopefully it's not too limited.

  2. Awesome. Seeing how the current sets are overpriced in the aftermarket, this will be a must buy.

  3. But what's the point if you already own the first DVD set's? I already own 2 of the DVD's. Will there be any additional content that the previous DVD's did not have?
The retro box is a nice though though. I'm just curious so to not waste money on something we already have.

    1. It's mostly for folks who didn't grab it the first time. The old ADV sets are ridiculously expensive these days... this is a cheaper option.

      I wouldn't count on extras.

  4. The old ADV set has a lot of formatting issues and would never play right in my DVD drive for my computer. I was wondering when more info would come out for this because this was suppose to be released back in Jan and never did. When I saw the cover art for this I was like OMG awesome!

  5. Wow, that box art is nicely done! Glad they had a little bit of passion to spruce up the packaging like that. I wonder how the discs will look. *sigh* makes me wish the series continued as planned. Capcom just had to cancel it though. Man...even back then!

    1. if mean the OVAs, you're wrong. but if you mean battle network and starforce, they aren't the same plot or universe.

    2. You are wrong -- I mean this tv series in American version. I mean OVA and they are much better. I wish they make a series like PSX and PS2 version. Thanks.

    3. i have no clue what you just said. please elaborate your point.

    4. You're only saying that because of the character designs.
The Rockman OVA was educational special that had less to do about Megaman himself as Sonic X had to do about Sonic.

    5. Sighing! I know that Rockman OVA was an educational purpose special but if it wasn't an educational purpose then it would be series. That's what I mean.. Japanese version just like Naruto or Sonic X is so much better than this Megaman series version. The America drawing of Megaman is so UGLY! Proto Man was an enemy ? Silly story in America, really. I am stick with Japan story since Blues and Rockman are both brothers, period. Sorry about my English but it doesn't matter about grammar, I know what you are going to say. If you are in our country and we dont complaint about your grammar in our language either. We understand that its not easily to write as long as we understand each others. America is the worst and cruel people that always say about European's grammars in English. We dont have a problem with your grammar in our language.. Most tourists anyway and we encourage them and trying to understand them without say your grammar is bad or something like that. Yes, many European people like me say about the American being mean and cruel! Be nice and be understanding! Wow. That's American way with no respect for one another. Anyway, will you please move on, alright ? Thanks.

    6. That's nice. Got anything positive to contribute? The Ruby-Spears series gets flack enough as it is. Can we just stop?

    7. Nice try, Anti-America. You obviously s have some issues with America. "I hate this America version" "That's American way with no respect"

If anyone is being mean and cruel it's you and your prejudice.

This cartoon is amazing, it may not be accurate to the plot of Megaman but it is much moreso than the OVA where Megaman gains the power up of Japan. Protoman is still Megaman's brother in the series he was just made a villain.

Also, if you hate the American version so much why are you using their dubbed names?

  7. Now that's nice. That's how you make an eye catching cover. Head and shoulders above both ADV releases (particularly the 2nd one).

I already own the original sets, but I'd buy this in a second. Throw in some new content (like the original press promo, the Bandai toy commercials and some retrospective interviews with Ian Corlett and Scott McNeil) and you can name your price!

  8. Can something "go retro" that is already old?

    1. Yes, because it's a new cover design.
