Capcom Reiterates New Mobile Mega Man By March 2017

 Rockman Xover, 2012 (iOS/Android)

For those who still believe it was an April Fools joke, Capcom's latest financial earnings report once again confirmed the development of a new smartphone Mega Man game (or two) by March 2017.

Under the company's new "Mobile Content Strategies", Capcom intends to bolster profits by leveraging popular intellectual properties on mobile. Capcom states "For the Japanese market, this fiscal year we plan to strengthen development of games using Capcom IP and releasing at least 4 new titles, including "Mega Man," "Monster Hunter" and Sengoku BASARA."

Again, that's four mobile titles from three IPs. So between now and next March, we'll have at least one new Mega Man game. The "for the Japanese market" statement carries one of two connotations, from my understanding: the game(s) will be exclusive to the region, or we'll get them after FYE 2017. Either way, something's coming.

  1. This time I recomend not throwing a holy uproar if it is formated like a standard mobile game and not fully featured. I understand that Xover was a shock to those expecting more, especially since it came so shortly after the cancelation of so many more promising legitimate titles. That said, as a stand alone mobile game (speaking as someone who played the JP version) It was alright at the worst. It was very much like most other collectable card games on the IOS/android market with a little bit of jumping and shooting thrown in the middle. The artwork was really good, the music was incredible, and the collection aspect of it was actually quite enjoyable as well. In the end, we as fans prevented what was meant to be a simple time killer, that many in other regions could have enjoyed and ensured that it never saw the light of day.

I'm not saying that the reaction was out of place at the time, I was one of the most adimate haters when it was first shown, but, my point is, I think that we should be mindful of the message we send to Capcom when they do something ANYTHING new with the franchise for the first time in what's been over 5 years now. Whatever it is may not be great, but if it shows promise in their eyes, maybe, just maybe we could see a proper revival and return to form for the franchise as a whole.

    1. Agreed X-over's reception in the west definitely did no favors for Capcom's perception of fan interest in Mega Man

    2. That doesn't mean that we have to roll over and accept ANYTHING that Capcom throws at us.
On the other hand, we'd all be fools to think that an airtight mobile platformer is on its way when controllers aren't widely used.

So, all of that said, I'm figuring it will tie into the new TV show, and as long as it's not just utterly awful, it will get the support it deserves!

Likewise, if it's trash, don't worry - even the public outside of the MM fans will be sure to trash it.

So the real call to arms, here, is to be supportive and rationally critique the game or approach where needed.

    3. Your standards and the standards of others may not be the same and I disagree with about everything you said about Xover. "Alright at worst" is too generous.

That said, I'm happy to keep an open mind. But if whatever Capcom has planned is just some slapped together bunch of nothing, it won't automatically get a free pass from me just because it has "Megaman" or "Rockman" or whatever in the title.

  2. Rockman gogo was decent. I'll give whatever it is a fair shot so long as it's not horrible.

A mobile BN type card collection action rpg with plot elements in the vein of Kingdom Hearts X and competitive aspects like Clash of Clans would be amazing.

  3. I hope it's not your standard fare "collector" games that are all the rage now. While those types of games start out fun, they eventually get very repetitive as you complete the same tasks over and over again to get random drops. I have started and subsequently given up on many of those due to boredom. What I would personally like to see is an ad-supported game with substantial content. (Kemco's Machine Knight comes to mind as an excellent pattern that Capcom could follow to make a good ad-supported game.) Guess we'll just have to see what Capcom comes up with. Maybe it will be good.

  5. As long as it doesn't require to be always connected to the internet to play or, if it does, it doesn't stay available for only 1-3 years before being doomed to oblivion... Meh, why not?

  6. If they actually do something cool... like say a Battle Network game that lets you "jack in" to real life things to go into randomized dungeons, battle other people's NetNavis, etc., then that'd be awesome. If it ends up being Xover 2... that'll make me a sad panda.

  9. But... but, it's mobile! It's not a real game if it's on mobile! /s

If it's good quality, I'll play it. If the quality is bleh and convoluted like Xover was, I'll probably pass.

  10. It's probably Rockman Whack-a-Mole kind of game where you literally have to perform the Buddha's Palm attack on the whole screen to get a perfect points, is there anybody want to play this type of game?

This reminds me that more than 10 years ago, I saw a person in his late 20 playing at the arcade (not sure which version of The King of Fighters), he smashed all the buttons with his palm repeatedly but none of the combo works and his character (not remember because I'm too busy looking at him) keeps jumping left and right because he treated the stick like a person steering a coffee cup LOL! I believed that now he had mastered the Buddha's Palm attack.
