Dr. Wily Hitting the Big Screen in November

Don't let the title mislead you: Dr. Wily is not getting his own movie (interesting idea, though). Rather, the maniacal doctor, among other classic video game villains, will be making an appearance in Walt Disney's upcoming animated feature film, Wreck-it Ralph.

Wreck-It Ralph, due out this November, is a movie about the titular Ralph, a video game villain striving to become a hero. To that end, Ralph must escape the confines of his game, Fix-It Felix Jr., and travel to other video games to prove his worth. The film has been said to feature cameos and homages to a number of characters, but this is our first look at the concept in action.

The above image from Disney’s D23 Magazine is largely assumed to depict a scene where Ralph attends a video game villain support group. Dr. Wily (left), Bowser, Zangief, and Eggman/Robotnik are all present and accounted for. So, yeah; the scene essentially sells itself. Cinema gold in the making.

No indication how large a role Wily and his companions will play in the film's plot, but I definitely like what I'm seeing so far. And who knows? Perhaps Mega Man, too, will make an appearance? Hurray for mainstream exposure!

  1. Dr Wily is the best of them, the most diabolic, naturly! =P

  2. Wow, Disney's gonna bring a movie of video game crossovers!? Now that's pretty interesting...even Wily gonna be in the film with other villains! Glad Disney have respect with our favorite blue bomber characters.

But Zangief as a villain? I know he was on Shadowloo in the cartoon, but him being a villain...is it still canon?

  3. Oh right, he was a villain in the cartoon too. Aside from that he was only a villain in the American movie.

In the games he has, from the beginning, been a Soviet/Russian hero, just wanting to bring glory to his Motherland.

  4. I wonder how much disney shelled out to Nintendo, Sega and Capcom for the rights to have those characters appear?

  5. @Anonymous #2: It was never canon to begin with. Zangief was always a neutral/good guy in the games. That's probably my only complaint about this. He's huge, mean, and ready to kick your ass several times over, but a bad guy he is certainly not.

Anyways, seeing that is REALLY awesome! Dr. Wily, Eggman, Bowser, and Zangief all in one movie is really cool! :D (even though I'm a bit irked about how he's portrayed as a bad guy, seeing him is still great). I'm still remaining REAAAAALLY cautious about this film, since it could always turn out crappy, but seeing those guys, even as just a cameo, does raise my hype levels a bit.

  6. Uh...what? I can safely say I never expected to ever see something like this.

  7. Wily's hair is actually combed? Wonder if he'll get any lines.

First I've heard of this movie, but the concept sounds interesting.

  8. This movie just got a whole lot more interesting! But why is Zangief a villain?

  9. I really hope this isn't a scene from the movie, because if it is, it shows that they don't know what the hell they're doing, with Zangief being there.

That being said, I'm still pretty excited about this.

  10. Weird project, but interested to see how it turns out.

  11. Disney's Johnny-Come-Lately answer to Megamind which was Dreamworks' answer to Despicable Me...

I can't really make out Wily in this pic, but of all the crap movies that are video game-centric (Spy Kids 3D, Tron Legacy, Game Over and that putrid Level Up show) this one has the potential to be the most appealing.

Video games and movies never mesh well, but for now I'll stick with King of Kong.

Wily looks off for some reason. Also, why not Bison/Vega omstead of zangief?

  13. They should let disney/pixar make a Mega Man movie. It would be perfect.

  14. Isn't that technically concept art? Or is it actually a bit from the movie?

Either way, Disney's doing something good at least~!

  15. I find it funny that they included Zangief. There's still a chance it'll be a sort of joke that he's there, like he's accidentally in the wrong meeting, or he only speaks russian and no one knows why he's there, or some other joke reason.

  16. A Wily and Robotnik alliance, huh? I could tell that this is going to be interesting. I'd comment on Bowser being there, but this wouldn't be the first time that he and Robotnik have teamed up, since they've done so in the Mario & Sonic sports titles.

  17. I wouldn't assume that Wily, let alone the others, are guaranteed to make an appearance in the final film, because of copyrights and all that.

It's not good to assume things, Protodude. :P

  18. If Wily actually gets any lines I hope they use Scott McNeill.
Purists can hate me all they want, he's the only voice I've ever liked.

  19. @Dr. Jerk: I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume that they got permission to use the characters. I don't think we'd be seeing them at all otherwise. :P

  20. OK, Wily was in an arcade game (Power Battles/Fighters), as was Zangief, and Robotnik (Sonic the Fighters)... but has Bowser ever been in an arcade game?

  21. Bowser was in Vs. Super Mario Bros. and in the Mario Kart GP arcade games

  23. "OK, Wily was in an arcade game (Power Battles/Fighters), as was Zangief, and Robotnik (Sonic the Fighters)... but has Bowser ever been in an arcade game?"

Where does it say that the villains have to be from arcade games? Bowser is the most iconic video game villain, and if Disney acquired rights to use him, they would be foolish not to.

  24. Actually, there were arcade cabinets of even Super Mario Bros. - I actually played one not too many years back, for the giggles.

In that respect, Bowser definitely would fit in as an arcade villain. However, I don't think the modern Eggman design we see here was the one that actually appeared in any arcade games, so that there is a legit nitpick.

  25. "Robotnik (Sonic the Fighters)..."

Let's not forget SegaSonic the Hedgehog.

  26. Great to see this! :D

I would say that the odds are good that Wily will get some lines, as this appears to be from the "support group" scene that was shown in concept-art form at an event last year.

More information about the preview from last year can be seen here - http://www.cinemablend.com/new/wreck-it-ralph-footage-from-d23-features-8-bit-action-plenty-of-cameos-26349.html . It also appears, from this write-up, that Zangeif is in the scene in place of what was formerly a placeholder character, and the joke is explained there.

  27. Bad news, from the trailer, Wily has been cut and replace by Bison...

  28. Bad news. The trailer for the movie has him replaced by Bison... is Capcom ashamed of Megaman now and is pushing to make Street Fighter their company mascot?
