Review: Threezero MDLX Mega Man X

Threezero's Mega Man line has finally branched outside of the Classic series with their latest release: Mega Man X. Can X go above and beyond his brother before him? Join me after the break where we'll go over everything this figure has to offer!

Review sample provided by BigBadToyStore. Go check 'em out!

Threezero's MDLX X comes in two varieties: standard (right) and Event Exclusive (left). While both figures are identical, the Event Exclusive version comes with an additional head part accessory. Thankfully, the Event Exclusive version is available at BigBadToyStore, and despite the added bonus, both versions are similarly priced.

"I'm beginning the mission!"

This figure makes a strong first impression. The colors are vibrant, the darker blue armor has a beautiful shine, and the proportions and likeness are spot on. I immediately preferred it over its Classic counterpart. For the most part, it feels like Threezero has learned from past mistakes to produce a more refined figure overall.

It has a satisfying weight that gives it a premium feel, and the articulation is excellent, allowing X to pull off nearly any pose you would want. Occasionally, the shoulder armor pops off, but it is an easy fix. One curious design choice is that the shoulder ball joints are black instead of the usual dark blue. It is not a deal breaker by any means, just an odd decision, and even if it is not entirely accurate, it still looks great.

20XX to 21XX

Seeing X side-by-side with Mega Man only furthers the point. While Mega Man was a good-looking figure with a few hiccups here and there, X is an outstanding one. His helmet shape frames his eyes much better than Mega Man’s, eliminating the issue of dull facial expressions. Another highlight is the scale between the two figures, which is spot on. They look like they were designed to stand side by side, unlike Kotobukiya’s versions of these same characters, which use different scales between the Classic and X lines.

"Mission accomplished!"

And speaking of Kotobukiya, we can see here that the MDLX X is about a head shorter than Kotobukiya's offering. While they are both good in their own right, the different scales can exist next to one another on the same shelf without too much to worry about. If you want, you can say that the MDLX figure represents the smaller Mega Man X and Mega Man X2 art-styles where the characters were a bit smaller. Just display them in the way that makes you the most happy. Use your sense & skill to make the display you want to see!

"Take this!"

X includes a very impressive looking green charge shot effect piece with included stand. This charge shot is modeled after the charge shot seen in Mega Man X4 through Mega Man X6. The front of the charge shot is clear, with the piece inside creating a real sense of depth. The white ends of the shot not only look nice, but they also emphasize the speed and power of the shot. The figure also includes a  separate piece to attach the charge shot to the X-Buster, but...

"Not a charge shot!"

The charge shot is a bit too heavy for X to properly support, so getting this photo took a lot of finagling. Balancing X with the charge shot is far from impossible, but it may be a bit more trouble than it's worth.

Shine on you crazy Hunter.

That brings us to the coolest and most unique accessory of them all, the shine effect for X’s head gem. This piece is exclusive to the Event Exclusive edition, so be sure to grab that version if you want it included. When it was first revealed, I couldn’t help but wonder how Threezero planned to engineer it to stay attached to X’s head.

I never would have guessed how they did it, so let’s break it down. You remove the front of X’s helmet as if you were swapping out the face plate, then take out the head gem, place the front of the helmet almost all the way back on, and finally slot the shine effect into the gem opening. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but the results are absolutely worth it.

As cool as this accessory is, though, I do have one small nitpick...

"Returning to base!"

The shine effect piece may be just a bit too large. It barely blocks X's arm when doing the proper victory pose. I'm sure I could get it with some more effort, maybe it was my own sense & skill taking a day off. But there are always other options.

"It's finally over..."

With a bit of creativity a pose like this can work just a well with the effect part. You aren't limited solely by what you see on the screen, just have fun.

Accessorize!

The accessory list is on the smaller side, but you get everything you would need for plenty of poses. X includes two faces (stern and intense), two sets of hands (fists and open), an X-Buster for either arm, the charge shot effect, a piece to connect the charge shot to the X-Buster, and the shine effect (only included with the Event Exclusive edition). Perhaps we will get additional faces with potential future Special Weapon releases for X (c'moooon Shotgun Ice and Sonic Slicer!), but only time will tell.

X's wall climb looks different this time around...

Like the previous MDLX Mega Man releases, X has magnetic feet, allowing him to attach himself to metal. This feature makes more sense for X, I'm looking forward to seeing people properly their own MDLX X in a wall climb pose.

The enclosed instructions

This is really neither here nor there, I just wanted to point out something on the instructions. The way the photos here were done is really strange looking, like the lighting was off or something. The additional face on the upper right is so creepy. X really got into the Halloween spirit.

And that's about all there is to say about Threezero's MDLX Mega Man X. Overall, this is a wonderful figure, and definitely the best in the line so far. Be sure to be on the lookout for this one, along with the recently-released Metal Blade Mega Man. And the line is far from over with an upcoming Zero and Proto Man. Hopefully, we will get release information about those soon. If you plan on getting this or any of the other great Mega Man products that BigBadToyStore has, be sure to use our links so they know we sent ya.
