Capcom is Evaluating Their Approach for New Mega Man Games and Ports

During Capcom's 44th general shareholder meeting, shareholders brought up inquiries regarding the Mega Man franchise. One shareholder asked about the overall future plans, while another expressed curiosity about potential ports and collections:

Q: Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection was released in April and has surpassed 1 million units in sales, contributing to existing IP utilization and user expansion. What are your plans for the Mega Man series?

A: Including Mega Man 11, the latest entry in the franchise, Mega Man is one of Capcom’s historic IPs and is loved by fans, and as such we want to take care in how we develop the series. We are considering how to approach the production of new entries in the series, which requires numerous factors, including the development of a solid concept, ideas and gameplay, etc.

Q: Tell me your plans for new ports or collections in the Mega Man series.

A: We are considering our approach to ports of past entries titles, which includes addressing technical issues.

----

A promising, if not cautiously optimistic response. For now, it gives us a small taste to ponder as we eagerly anticipate the future to reveal itself.

  1. That's all I've wanted - actual communication with Capcom, or at least for us to know their intention with the series! We probably are getting a collection next, but I have MUCH more faith in them actually developing something new! We don't even know if we're getting anything new in Megaman within the next.. 3 years? But we have confirmation that they are interested in Megaman! I'm actually really happy with this

  2. so the same spiel for the past 5 years. What they really meant to say is we will keep doing resident evil and monster hunter. every other series does not matter to us.

    1. Yep, too true.

    2. Yeah, they don't care. I think about 10 of those 30 years/"anniversaries" they didn't say a single word about Megaman. Even Capcom's response directly to this was crap. "We want to take care and it's historic and loved by fans." And yet Capcom has always blamed the fans for cancelling the games. It's a load of horsecrap from them. If they cared and truly respected that it was historic and loved, they wouldn't have done nothing for, what, 15+ years besides ports/collections and MM11 which was only ever a FU to Inafune and Mighty No.9.

  3. "including the development of a solid concept, ideas and gameplay, etc. "
This sounds like "And now time for something completely different"
We shall see. But that's typical Capcom.

    1. Not necessarily bad! EXE came from one of these reevaluations after all... and pachinko, while short-lived, was still a pretty cool take on the world.

      Delete
    2. And the IP is now a cluster of a mess as a result.

      Delete
    3. EXE did not come from one of these reevaluations, what are you talking about???

Why do people love spreading misinfo to make their case? Capcom was not reevaluating Mega Man when creating EXE. EXE is the organic spin-off of Capcom devs just simply wanting to make a card based action RPG using the Mega Man IP, after giving up on a heart monitor horror project for the GBA. Battle Network is to Mega Man what Paper is to Super Mario Bros.

Mainline Mega Man was still going strong at the time with another series being produced within it (Zero) along side the continuation of X.

  4. wh...what? Is that promising tho?? Not gonna salt-rant or anything, I mean it's cool. I'm glad they said something at all but...isn't this the most generic "We are considering [fluff text]" response ever? This isn't really....saying anything. lolol

Granted, after reading the whole Q&A, they were super vague/generic about pretty much all the questions about their IPs. Basically just said "We are considering and discussing things" for every one of those questions. Nothing really insightful there. Good to read that it looks like Capcom's really focusing on expanding their reach global reach and brand awareness though. And guess I'll wait for Tokyo Game Show in September to see some actual game stuff.

  5. If you read their answers to the other questions, they were coy about their plans for all of their franchises, so I don't think this is something unique to MM. My guess is shareholder meetings and earnings calls in Japan are like most things in that culture, quite reserved.

You can take their response one of two ways: 1) They are purposely being ambiguous to announce a new entry on their own terms for the best effect from a marketing standpoint, 2) If you take their two responses at face value, they don't even have a title in production at the moment and if they are to develop one, it may just be another collection.

    4. This is how I interpreted it, but I guess another possible interpretation is that they're working to overcome technical issues with emulating/recreating 3D Playstation games. In either case, I do agree that they're talking about a Legends collection.

    5. "Megaman Legends Awful Controls" Yup, I found the noob.

  7. Honestly this is exactly what I want to hear, unlike many major game studios Capcom is clearly considering the importance of this franchise to us, the fans, and its contribution to the history of gaming. After the shitshow that was the early 2000s for the X series, this more careful direction is more than welcome. Things like excluding Proto Man from Mega Man 11, not jumping on X9 right away, and shutting down Dive all appear to be actions of care towards ideas they wish to be respectful and careful towards. I just hope that, above all else, all of this effort has an end goal in the form of a double A title like we used to get from them so long ago. 11 was a wonderful breath of fresh yet familiar air, and the unprompted mention of it give ms hope, but above all else I think it was Capcom's way of testing the waters in a safe way, preparing for something big. I might be too hopeful about all this, but that's what its all about. Being a fan of this franchise can be a huge pain sometimes, but like the games its all about resilience, hope, and lots and lots of patience, but to me its beginning to look like the spectacle at the end of the tunnel isn't too far away. We can only hope.

  8. The last time they said they were considering how to approach the series, we ended up with what was pretty much years-long radio silence. Mega Man 11's dev interviews made it sound like the game just barely managed to come together, too.

    1. It does seem like they're pushing a boulder uphill to make Megaman stuff as opposed to things they think are good print money. X Dive lasted forever and just went nowhere

  9. Now please do X9 and Mega Man Legends 3. You owe us that! ^_^

    1. Yeah, and if they can swing it for X9, maybe get some help from the people who made Protodroid DeLTA. For Mega Man Legends 3, I was thinking maybe Gunfire Games could help.

      Delete
    2. Mega Man X9 would have been great if it was released after the success of Mega Man 9, but instead, we got Mega Man 10. :(

      Delete
    3. The MMX saga has concluded. We know EXACTLY what happens after & in-between but people want an X9 that could potentially sully that & contradict canon? At least with ZX3 & Legends 3 there are still big questions on what happens next since they are literally open-ended with no resolutions.

      Delete
    4. @Anonymous Mega Man X6 sullied Mega Man X5 being the original intended canonical conclusion. X6 looked like it should have been conclusive with the ending cinematic of Zero asking to be shut down (which later would lead up to Mega Man Zero chronologically), but guess what? X7 and X8 happened and the story still continued. So your logic fails to hold up. X8 technically has some open-ended questions, so no, the X saga has not "concluded". Sure, the Hunters return to base after defeating Sigma and Lumine, but that doesn't really resolve the issues still hanging by the end. And there's still the whole topic of Axl being possessed by a fragment of Lumine's energy. There's definitely more to explore.

  10. "excluding Proto Man from Mega Man 11"

...Oh, don't even get me started on this. As irritating as it was that he and Bass were left out of the game, I found their explanation of not wanting new players to "feel confused" to be even worse. Not only is that total bullshit, but is a complete insult to the intelligence of anyone who has even the most basic, bare minimum knowledge of the Mega Man series.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's also an insult to anyone with the minimal amount of basic intelligence to be able to tell the difference between two different people. Forget Mega Man or games in general.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, the lack of Bass and Protoman was one big flaw with MM11. Before it came out, I was wondering if they would make an appearance. They help make the Classic story feel like real sequels to each other. Also not enough stages is another. There was no intro or mid stage and only 3 castle stages. Funny the NES games 3-6 had the most stages and 7 and 8 had at least intro and mid stages. I liked the 2 castles per game setups. Sad that that stopped after MM6. MMX games should also sometimes try the 2 fortress setups. MMX4 only had 3 fortress stages like MM11. 4 levels should be a minimum requirement. 5 is even better. If MM11 is gonna make so many new graphical assets, at least either make the game longer, or make sequels using them, like we saw many classic and X games do. Kind of a waste if it is just for 1 short game. R&F should have carried over the same effects as MM8, speaking of.

      Delete
    3. Proto and Bass aren't even in the majority of classic games as playable characters. I did not find that 11 suffered in anyway from the lack of them.

      Delete
  11. I'm really glad our favorite blue bomber is still around! I'm hoping for some really good new projects like MM 12 or maybe a brand new TV series surrounding a new protagonist BUT Rock is their mentor.

  12. Star Force collection maybe? Or if we're lucky enough, MM12 or X9?

  13. "Mega Man is one of Capcom’s historic IPs and is loved by fans, and as such we want to take care in how we develop the series"

Good, but that shouldn't take years of no games to manage that.

Q: Tell me your plans for new ports or collections in the Mega Man series.

Aside from the 1st X collection on Steam needing to have its lag issues fixed by default so I don't have to mess with the config file, the only collection needed at this point is Legends (even BN has or is getting one now). More games, less collections, please. I would recommend including Rockman and forte SNES in it too as DLC for the existing classic collections though with proper translations, maybe even make the explosion and sound effects more improved like MM8's since R&F could use a slight remake.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I will say that I recently played X2 on the X Anniversary/Legacy Collection on the PS4, and the lag is present there as well sadly (supposedly only for X1-X3) so it seems to be an emulator issue...

I don't know anybody with a Switch copy but I wanna say it's safe to say that it's also present in that version.

      Delete
    2. All versions of the collection have lag. You can check it out on YouTube. The Steam version to this day is the buggiest one with it instantly crashing on some CPUs for some reason, framerate issues but again only on some CPUs and now the overlay doesn't work; they never bothered fixing it.

  17. I'd really like to see official updates to the previous collections addressing the incorrect pixel scaling issue. I have workarounds I can use in the meanwhile, but official support for correct pixel scaling would be fantastic. While they are at it, it would be nice if we could get some DLC for the already released collections adding in games that weren't originally included such as Mega Man Powered Up, Mega Man and Bass, Maverick Hunter X, the various Battle Network spinoffs, etc.

As for new Mega Man games, I'd love to see new games come out for all of the series and not just Mega Man Classic. X9, ZXC, Legends 3, maybe even some Battle Network and Zero series spinoffs that take place parallel to their main series considering the main story for those series has concluded already.

  18. I hope Megaman 12 or X9 will be newly announced and ESRB rating is lower than T.

    1. A T rating for X sounds way better than an E rating

      Delete
    2. T is just right for X, Zero, ZX, etc. to be honest. Classic fits the E rating more, but most of the other series have darker tones or more serious plots that would be ruined by trying to fit into the E rating, and that's a big part of their appeal.

      Delete
    3. T is a perfectly good rating. Its honestly no worse then a movie getting a pg-13 rating. So I'm confused by this comment.

  20. A wonderful exercise in saying nothing. but nice to see shareholders being the ones to bring MegaMan up. When do you suppose was the last time the name "Megaman" and "shareholders" was in the same sentence?

Seems like they are very much in the same boat as before mm11. nobody knows how to make megaman games anymore, and nobody dares.

  26. I got a call from one of the shareholders, they're working on a sequel to Rockman&Forte in secret where you fight King 2 and use a surfboard to fight enemies. You can play as Mega Man and Auto in it, and if you beat the game as Auto without getting hit once, the screen will eject 100$ for you and then combust.

  27. Anyone that is even excited about this or thinks it’s good news is going to be disappointed, they should have already been developing another Megaman game by now. It’s been 5 years since 11. So how about a Megaman x9 Capcom? Or at least port the rest of the games that haven’t been released in a Legacy collection yet like Legends 1-2, Tron. Wily Wars, Battle & Chase, MM & Bass, The 2 90s arcade games, Gameboy MM 1-5, MMX Command Mission, Xtreme 1-2. There’s enough games for a few more Legacy collections if they don’t want to make a new game.

  28. Another question, same non-answer expected like this one if asked by shareholders:
"When can we expect a new Mega Man Series Producer to take over Kazuhiro Tsuchiya who has left the company?"

It's overly-obvious (except for those STILL delusional and addicted to the hopium and copium narcotics) that Capcom is now split into TWO despite having appearances of ONE: A Blue-and-Yellow Capcom, and a Black-and-White Capcom, with majority of financial budgeting and production staff resources being funneled into the latter Black-and-White Capcom now under current CEO Haruhiro Tsujimoto.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What if Capcom takes existing PS4 titles and ports them over to the PS5 and sells it to us at $70? 🤣 It seems like something they'd do.

Also, interesting that they mention Onimusha in this document. So far the original one got a remaster so maybe they plan on porting that to the PS5, and then releasing the rest of the series on PS5?
