The New Mega Man Cartoon Will Air on Cartoon Network in 2018 (Update)

It goes without saying I've been keeping a tight lip on a certain leaked trailer from the new Mega Man cartoon. Per the request of Dentsu Entertainment, I did not post it. Not yet, anyway. And while I'm still waiting for the go-ahead to do just that, here's a bit of news to chew on in the meantime: the show will air on Cartoon Network in 2018 in the United States, Dentsu announced. A toyline and a focus on global development will follow suit.

UPDATE: The English press release revealed a new character - Suna Light. Read on for the details and plot synopsis...

From The DHX Media Press Release: DHX Media & Dentsu Entertainment Land Mega Man On Cartoon Network U.S.:

DHX Media, the world’s leading independent, pure-play children’s content company, has signed a deal with Cartoon Network U.S. for Mega Man, an original DHX Media co-production with Dentsu Entertainment USA, Inc. The new series has also been picked up by DHX Media’s Family CHRGD for Canada. Based on the legendary Capcom Mega Man video game franchise, the 3D animated series goes into production this summer at DHX Media’s Vancouver studio. Man of Action Entertainment (Ben 10, Generator Rex, and the creators of the characters and team featured in Big Hero 6) will write and executive produce the series in collaboration with DHX Media and Dentsu Entertainment.

DHX Media manages distribution and licensing rights worldwide, excluding Asia, for the new Mega Man series. Dentsu Entertainment manages distribution and licensing in Asia.

Ken Faier, Executive Producer, Content at DHX Media, said: “We are thrilled that Cartoon Network has picked up the new Mega Man series for its U.S. viewers. This deal points to the solid demand for our original kids’ content, and highlights the strength of our strategy of collaborating with leading industry peers such as Dentsu and Man of Action to refresh evergreen properties for today’s kids. Further, we believe Mega Man’s incredible heritage and proven popularity also positions the brand extremely well for longer term consumer product opportunities.”
Yuichi Kinoshita, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dentsu Entertainment USA, Inc., said “Mega Man is a unique and powerful character, whose positivity and youthfulness has made him beloved around the world for 30 years.”

Aimed at kids 6 to 11, as well as their parents who grew up loving the video games, the new Mega Man animated series will feature exciting new technologies and robots, as well as the introduction of Mega Man’s alter-ego, Aki Light. Aki is a normal, upbeat, schoolboy robot who has nano-core technology that allows him to transform into the mega powered super hero Mega Man! With his Mega Buster arm cannon and iconic helmet, Mega Man battles the wickedest villains Silicon City has to offer. Beloved characters, such as Mega Man’s robotic dog, Rush, will return – while new characters, like Mega Mini™ and Suna Light, will make their debut!

The Mega Man franchise is grounded in a series of video games, first launched in 1987 by Capcom, featuring battles fought by the eponymous blue robot protagonist and an ongoing cast of allies and enemies. The Mega Man multiverse has spawned over 130 video games on multiple gaming systems, selling over 31 million copies worldwide, as well as a plethora of toys, comics and collectibles. A highly rated Mega Man TV series was popular in the USA in the mid-1990s and aired on ABC Family. The new animated Mega Man series focuses on a normal, upbeat schoolboy robot, who discovers that deep within his programming lies secret protocols that can transform him into the powerful Mega Man. And, as the world’s first robotic super-hero, Mega Man must face the threats of Silicon City, while trying to preserve his secret identity and maintain a regular robot boy life.

More news soon. Stay tuned!

  1. Hmm. They refined the artwork a bit. At least it doesn't look like it's from DeviantArt anymore. Now if they could improve the rest of the series by getting rid of Aki Light, Mega-Mini, etc. and making it about the real Mega Man.

    1. I prefer it this way, that way if this show fails hard to attract established fans, there is a clear distinction between them to identify them with.

And let's be honest, it will be a divisive series and it won't be this unifying marker it's being promoted as.

Yeah, but there could be other ways to handle this. I think that a ZX TV series would probably be a better idea than this one. Sure a ZX cartoon may be slightly darker than this new series (depending on what direction they go with it), but at least it would appeal to a wider audience and it would more accurately build on existing games. They could even further boost interest/appeal by filling in some of the Pandora/Prometheus backstory and promoting a new ZX game while they are at it.

      Delete
    3. I'd argue that ZX would appeal to a niche audience, judging by the games, but I think the shows and the games don't predict each others' success.

I think this show will fail people want the originals not the new made up crapthat has nothing to do with it ...mega man carries the soul of hub land twin brother who passed at birth and for the record stick with original design like that circle on his chest

  2. Cartoon Network, eh? So that means the cartoon is doomed to a 7:00 A.M. Eastern Time deathslot just like Sonic Boom, Transformers, and any other show that isn't a Cartoon Network original, much less any show that isn't the channel's pet, "Teen Titans Go!"

    What a shame.

  7. I thought it was first announced the show would be aired at Disney XD. Follow by if it was still there I wouldn't watch it because I can't take Capcom seriously ever since Keiji Inafune left, Rockman Xover in my opinion was trash and I can't accept it as part of the Mega Man legacy, and Capcom tries to find ways of making profit by reselling Mega Man's 1-6 on the eShop, 3DS Physical copy, and now Mobile gaming over and over again when they should have focus on other series.

Having the new series going to Cartoon Network... yeah Capcom ain't going to make money out of it because it is not a Cartoon Network Original. Pokémon moved to Disney XD and was dead on Cartoon Network because they kept airing it at 7am. WHAT KID WAKES UP AT THAT TIME AND WATCHES ONE NEW EPISODE OF POKEMON, THEN ITS A RERUN OF TEEN TITANS GO?? I am now happy Disney XD owns the rights to broadcast Pokémon because of better time slots. Furthermore other shows such as Sonic Boom and Transformers were broadcasted on Cartoon Network early morning as well. Then after that it is a bunch of reruns of a Teen Titans Go marathon all weekend long with an hour break of Amazing World of Gumball, and throw in with Clarence or Steven Universe or Powerpuff Girls.

The new Mega Man cartoon series is most likely to be broadcast the middle of the day, then after a week or two gets bumped to the 7am slot. Follow by, like that new weird Scooby Doo series, Sonic Boom, and other recently new series that aired on Cartoon Network for only 2-3 weeks, gets bumped to Boomerang where they are mostly at.

Above all else, Capcom hasn't made any progress at all with the Mega Man franchise, besides merchandise that doesn't relate to video games, ever since Keiji Inafune left. Kids today wouldn't understand what we grew up with. If there ever was a video of Kids React to the New Mega Man Cartoon Vs. the Old Mega Man Cartoon, I wouldn't be surprise if they have the exact reaction to the Gameboy and the very first season of Pokémon.

  8. It still looks like trash and disney knew better then to air it for the back lash that fans would give. Hell it got such a bad fan response with previous trailer that it was just depressing. hope they do something like Maverick hunter x which looked good and not this mistake.

I for one would love some megaman stuff but not like when its changed to something that is NOT megaman.

  20. I'll try to stay positive. The only thing that bothers me are those cheesy lines the leak had, but other than that it looks like it can be a really fun show. Too bad it's on CN though... Teen Titans Go are pretty much the only thing playing there.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Disappointing. I was looking forward to it premiering on Disney XD this year. Both the change of network and change of debut year are very troubling. I've lost respect for CN after its mishandling of TTG and PPG16. There's a high probability of it getting a death slot to keep room for everyone's "new favorite show," but to be fair, Disney XD isn't innocent of that practice either - it killed Tron Uprising by giving it one of the worst death slots possible - far after the average child's bedtime. A delay in release year also makes me wonder how behind-the-scenes stuff is working. How much progress did they make with the 2D version? Wasn't it said that the pilot was finished a year ago? Did they make the shift to 3D more recently than expected - is the teaser the only 3D work completed thus far? Will we get any major product for the 30th anniversary? I like the new figures as much as the next guy, but are we really going to get less substantial content than the 25h anniversary?

I'm still optimistic about the show's content itself, but I'm worried about the stuff surrounding it.

  22. The show was never announced to air on Disney XD. Nerdist, the outlet that "broke" that story, got DHX, the animation and distribution company for this series, confused with Disney XD. You can see it in their story revisions: http://web.archive.org/web/20160820192201/http://nerdist.com/the-new-mega-man-animated-series-will-have-a-more-optimistic-blue-bomber/ (original) http://nerdist.com/the-new-mega-man-animated-series-will-have-a-more-optimistic-blue-bomber/ (revised)

Though, amusingly, the Canadian channel that will run the show, Family Chrgd, was known as Disney XD Canada until late 2015.

  29. That's a distinctly Mega Man design, tho the very adult-like Mega Man X features on a child is a bit weird at first glance, it is still very much recognizable as Mega Man. With a proper face now, it also looks much better than the art we had before.

    1. "I mean, we gave the Ruby Spears Mega Man a chance. We gave Inti-Creates' Zero a chance.

So? Look where that's gotten us. We're more divided.

Whether you give it a chance or not is irrelevant anyways. Not only have Capcom and Inafune always done whatever they wanted with Mega Man, but if you grew up with Megaman in the 80s or 90s, then this show is definitely not for you. It's for the younger kids who grew up in the 2000s watching stuff like Ben 10.

      Delete
    2. "I'll give this one a chance."

My problem is that it is rewriting Classic Mega Man. At least Zero was a continuation of the X series and the Ruby-Spears cartoons were more or less accurate. (Well, aside from the lion men and a few other oddities.) Battle Network was a bit of a stretch, but it never claimed to be part of the Classic timeline and did a good job distancing itself from Classic. So there is a definite difference between this cartoon and the situations you cited.

    3. "it's for the younger kids who grew up in the 2000s watching stuff like Ben 10"
actually no, i'm one of theses kid and i'm now in my 20's, not their target audience. And to aim with my generation, something based on Starforce of ZX would have fitted better. (though i personnally have played all the megaman serie).
it's for kids born in the 2000 who are growing up in the 2010's watching avengers assemble and stuff like this. this show might fit for my little brothers and sister.

How about we all wait and see the finished product before mercilessly blasting it and ditto for the CN time slot stuff too.

And while it does say it's targeted at parents who were fans of the games....come on....this show is targeted for kids and not the adults who grew up playing the games.

And as far as the show having "cringed moments",go watch any cartoon past or present and you'll find them in pretty much every cartoon.

Honestly I hope this becomes a hit show and revives the franchise and all Mega Man fans should hope for the revival of the franchise as well.

    2. "How about we all wait and see the finished product before mercilessly blasting it..."

If you go elsewhere, you'll see that people are a bit more accepting of the redesign of Mega Man. Actually, there are a few positive responses to the redesign right here on this page. I'm actually a little more accepting of what's going to be, especially since they're probably doing away with that terrible 2D animation we saw in the leaked trailer. It's the only cartoon I was ever glad to see change into a CGI version.

"...and ditto for the CN time slot stuff too."

Uhh... no. Sorry. Cartoon Network doesn't get a pass. That network deserves EVERY BIT of the criticism they get. EVERY. BIT. I have a few examples from my experience. For one, I just happened to catch Regular Show's series finale by mistake. Two: Transformers: Robots in Disguise was on at a terrible time slot, and got little to no advertising(my DVR was set to automatically record, so that's how I found out about the 3rd season).

The 3rd example is how Generator Rex was poorly mishandled nearing the end of the series, and I just happened to be aware of the ending of that show...

#4: Poor, poor Sonic Boom. As a Sonic fan, this is nothing short of a travesty. The cartoon did pretty well on the network for something that got very little advertisements, and was aired so early in the morning. I did my best to catch all the episodes, and so did a lot of viewers. It consistently got at least one million viewers, despite its treatment on the network, and all the negativity surrounding the series. And then the boot to Boomerang... Dumbest. Move. EVER. Barely anyone has that channel in their cable package, and there's no way for me to watch it legitimately, either. Sadly, it's dying a speedy, horrible death because of the switch-up in networks(sub-100,000 regular viewers right now).

Lastly, as someone once said, Cartoon Network shows Teen Titans Go! more than Nickelodeon shows Spongebob Squarepants. Think about that. Nickelodeon was infamous for constantly airing that cartoon... and Cartoon Network somehow managed to do even worse! How do you air multiple mini-marathons of one cartoon all week, every week, every MONTH?

No. Cartoon Network is a rubbish network, and I've only scratched the surface talking about them. Do not defend this network, it doesn't deserve your respect. We can all pretty much guarantee that Mega Man will be mishandled as well. And everyone can point fingers at one cartoon alone for getting to that conclusion, and for the majority of what's wrong with the network right now(you know what cartoon that is).

I don't mean to be harsh, by the way, and this is in no way directed at you, so please don't take this personally. I'm just voicing my disappointment in CN, and the huge chance that merely catching this show(Mega Man) will be a chore, due to my past and current experiences.

      Delete
    3. "I am concerned that Capcom would ignorantly consider releasing Mega Man 11 starring Aki Light."

You kidding? The series always kept each continuity separated reasonably. If there's to be animation tie-in eventually, chances are it'll be a standalone title. Why would the company even consider it to be a sequel to completely unrelated original series? Don't overreact, dood.

      Delete
    4. It's not 'rewriting' Classic MM just because it lacks a subtitle. Ruby-Spears Megaman lacked its own subtitle (unless 'Defender of the Future' counted) and Capcom didn't base any mainline games off of it.

The fact that this Megaman isn't even named Rock points towards it being an alternate continuity, as does literally everything else about it. Those 'canon errors' y'all are complaining about were more than likely conscious changes made to establish this.

      Delete
    5. RS Megaman was still classic, just a western interpretation and artstyle of the story. Same as Archie and Megamix and dreamwave. So it's fine if they don't have any subtitles; it is part of the classic "Megaman".

Then you have MMBN, which had different design, different style, but same name, as an alternate continuity of the classic series. They have a different subtitle.

This is not both. They say it's (based on) classic, like RS. They even had a 8-bit Megaman in the trailer. But the story, setting, theme is different. Different art style, design, character name. Like MMBN or Legends. There are no subtitles that separate them as a new series, but it is obvious this is a different series as Classic.

It sound like this is going to be the new rebooted (1st gen) Megaman. Probably like "Modern" and "classic" Sonic.

      Delete
    6. they're actually more of us saying something along the line of "this is clearly not for us", don't know if this is going to be a bad show, but this is not for us, that is a fact, they're not aiming it at megaman fans. elitism have nothing to do with it.

and as for the cringed moment things , yes every show have them (or most at least), but usually they're not likely to be the moments that get leaked. i mean...it's hard to explain, but the first things they should do is the basic premise of the show. that said, it was leaked and "not suposed to be seen" according to them.
And yes, like every megaman fan, i would like the franchise to be ressurected, but that's not the point here. you have very few chance that a western made cartoon ressurect a franchise, japanese company tend to focus first on the japanese market first and few western show manage to pick in Japan. The only thing that would ressurect the franchise would be that capcom make a new game and actually move their ass to advertise it properly (because , yes that's where the problem is, and the reason why ZX "failed" is that, not one of the many excuse they give, because they suck at comunication, but that's another debate and let's not get into it).
especially true if the show is not following the continuity of the games. a show directly based on the games could act as a advertisement for them, but if it's a different show altogether, you have few chance that people got interested in the game trough it (some people will, but it will not be a majority). it will sell toys based on the cartoon to the kids who will watch it, but that's it.

    7. I thought the 2D animation we saw lookef more appealing, but we really haven't seen much of either.

      Delete
    8. The Ruby-Spears cartoons set themselves up to be part of the Classic series and not the other way around. This does not seem to be the case with the new cartoon. So that's why I am more or less OK with the Ruby-Spears cartoon but not this one.

I will agree that the new cartoon desperately needs a subtitle. As I mentioned in an earlier comment here, if it were called, Mega Man Aki...Mega Man Next...whatever, I would feel way better about things. But as it stands, it is acting like it is the new/replacement Mega Man even going as far as to include classic Mega Man in the logo as if Aki and Rock are supposed to be the same thing.

"Why would the company even consider it to be a sequel to completely unrelated original series? Don't overreact, dood."

I dunno, you tell me. They did it with Mega Man X7 when they basically replaced X with Axl, and we all know how that turned out. Given Capcom's track record of bad decisions, I would not say that Mega Man 11 starring Aki would be too far of a stretch for them.

"Probably like "Modern" and "classic" Sonic."

That would be a bad thing. A really, really, REALLY bad thing. It's hard enough to satisfy fans of particular series, but it only gets worse when those fans start arguing about which version is the "real" one. That is the last thing that Mega Man fandom needs right now.

      Delete
    9. Axl wasn't imported from another continuity, though; he was always meant to be an MMX character.

At least as far as MM's concerned, Capcom tends to ignore stuff outside of the games, outside of lampooning bizarre '80s US/PAL box arts. I don't think there's any real precedent for Double Dragon V-esque shoehorning; the issue of rights (wrt: Capcom and Man of Action) alone would probably dissuade Capcom from trying it.

      Delete
  35. The design is still awful and the animation will be just as bad.

And besides, making Megaman go to school? Seriously? I believe Dreamwave had this same idea and it lasted all of four issues.

Being a Cartoon Network show, I perceive only two possible fates:
    1. The show will be total garbage and relegated to CN's "crack of dawn" block.
    2. The show will be surprisingly decent, and it will be swiftly struck dead by CN and replaced with something that is total garbage like Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats were when they showed promise.

Bottom line: For better or worse, Cartoon Network will not abide a quality show, especially one that does not eclipse the bottom-feeder shows in ratings and toy sales.

    This can't end well.

    1. Suna Light is a new character like Mega Mini, though. She/he most likely isn't just Protoman, Dr.Light or Roll with another name.
      See here:
"while new characters, like Mega Mini™ and Suna Light, will make their debut!"
That implies she/he is a new character on the same vein as Mega Mini. My guess? Something like Dr.Light's wife or sister/brother.

As for attracting old fans, it is clear they don't want that. They want to attract young kids and get rid of their need for the old fans, they probably concluded the current fanbase required too much work to please and went with a "away with the old, in with the new" plan. Oh well, at least we still have the fangames.

    2. Going for the younger generation as the target demo seems like it should be the rule for properties like this, whether the older one likes it or not.

  38. Not 2017?
That is a pity, I'm liking the look of this new Megaman.
The story is fine with me too. That said, they really should reconsider their decision to air it on Cartoon Network. CN is a bad channel for new shows. I don't see many kids being able to watch it, they will probably put it in a bad timeslot.

  39. yu know what? i'm not upset or anything. it's okay, i know they're not making the show for me, i can live with that. i'll just treat it as a totaly different thing alltogether.
it won't be a good adaptation of megaman, but there's still a chance for it to be a good show. my little brother will probably watch it, i'll just have to have him play the games so that he can make the difference between the "real" megaman and the megaman of this cartoon.
my only fear is that people who don't know better might start thinking that this is how megaman have always been.
all that said, i do wonder why they would go saying that they want to appeal to older fan as well when they're clearly making they're own thing.

  40. i'm fine with them doing their own show about a kid who morph into his superhero alter-ego, but why the hell taking the trouble of calling that megaman, in that case? you're going to tell me that buying the rights avoid all risk of plagiarism, but at this point it's so far from the source material that they could have make without it. They make a show about a kid who transform (they just avoid making him blue and megaman looking), with a scientist father, a sister and some sort of "mini" sidekick, and that's barely something they could get plagiat assignement for.
and if it's fore the appeal of the name... well they're not going to get the people who know the megaman game anyway (or rather, some of us might be interested anyway, but it won't be "because it's called megaman"), so they could do without it too. here it's even counterproductive.
that said, not fond of the face of this megaman, but that's probably because i'm used to eastern style while it have a more "animesque western look".

  41. you know, the school thing and other things are why what i'm wondering is why the fluke did they not decide to base it on StarForce?!
i mean, just look, a kid that transform into his superhero alter-ego, go to school...
Sure Geo was absolutely not "upbeat" at the begining of the serie, but that would still have been far less of a stretch than going from classic to do something that take inspiration from StarForce.
Yes, theres already a anime about starforce, but it was not a western adaptation and it was a few years ago, so the kids that are going to watch MoA megaman probably did'nt even know about it.
also, the format of Starforce is better fitted to introduce new characters in a adaptation, i think. and also better fitted to transition it into a kid show (that's what the aformentioned anime did, for exemple)

Because no one liked StarForce. Not saying it was a bad series, but it was a HUGE departure from the Megaman brand, both in tone and theme, and was overall a water-down version of much more beloved Battle Network series. The franchise is about a robot boy (or some other product of advancing technology) fighting to maintain peace against others of his kind trying to take over the world. SF was about aliens fusing with emotionally weak people to turn them into monsters, with one of this fusions just happening to be more of a jerk w/ a heart of gold than actually evil.

There was the Dreamwave comic that used the secret superhero concept with the classic series and it was fair. With MegaBen here, they are trying to bland different elements from the various versions to make something new. So it's no less "Megaman" than X, Legends, ZX, etc. All that really matters is that show is good.

    2. "because no one liked starforce"
Yes but no. Here, since they are clearly NOT trying to cash on the popularity of the games to make the show works (and if they where trying, they're hiding it verry well) and have already won they ire of a sizable portion of the game fanbase, so wether or not they're basing it on a popular installement of the game does'nt matter.
and since their not trying hard to be faithfull to the game (i'm not saying it's a bad thing, but that's what they're doing), wether or not the hero is fighting against robot or alien does'nt change anything to the dynamic of the show, which judjing by what information they give us is "the hero fight the bad guy in good ol' superhero fashion". for that matter, like you said in you comment, they themselves admited to be taking elements from X and starforce.
And since they where going to differenciate themselves from the games, they could have perfectly get rid of the facts that Geo was a emo, that traumatic stuff happened to some characters and that the aliens fuse with people suffering loneliness (because it was'nt with emotional weakness in itself, but specifically with loneliness),and change it into "Alien who whant to take over the world", with omega being the one oposing thoses of it's kind. Good guy fight the bad guy in good ol' superhero fashion.
different from the game? yes , but still less than going from classic timeline to where we are now.
they are blending elements from the different series, but they're clearly taking classic for base, they could have taken SF. except if they reaaaaally wanted to have rush.
Just to clarify, i don't say it's going to be bad. it can be just fine, as someone else commented, it's not going to be a good "adaptation" but it might be a good show

    3. SF was not a watered down version of battle network, simply a other concept, and it was still the same concept than the rest of the serie blue hero fighting evil in a technologically advanced world, purple rival, pink girl, etc. but people think it was suposed to be like battle network and fail at it, it was suposed to be something else from the start, with fight relating more on action and reflexe than strategy.
not more of a stretch than going from classic timeline to battle network (actually closer to classic timeline than battle network was).

  44. You know what those leakers done wrong? not showing the other characters. They keep on showing megaben only. what about dr.light, dr.wily, rush--speaking of which, i bet they'd make him a talking dog like scooby-doo.

    1. Even if they did make Rush talk, wouldn't be the first time a Mega Man cartoon did it.
