Joe Ruby, Co-Creator of Mega Man "Ruby-Spears" Cartoon, Has Died

Animation legend Joe Ruby, who not only co-created Scooby-Doo! but the now-infamous early nineties Mega Man cartoon, passed away on Wednesday, August 26th. He was 87-years-old.

“He never stopped writing and creating, even as he aged,” his grandson Benjamin Ruby told Variety.

Alongside Ken Spears, Joe Ruby worked with Capcom to develop the animated Mega Man series in 1994. A good 26 years later, the show is fondly remembered by fans and non-fans alike. It's a delightful cheesy romp that's spawned countless fan-art, parodies and memes. It will not be soon forgotten. (It is, after all, available to watch in its entirely on YouTube)

For those interested, M Sipher published a great interview with Joe several years ago that's worth a read. Joe talks about the show's origins, the mythical season 3, the unproduced Mega Man X spin-off, and more.

Goodbye, Joe. Thanks for the memories!

  2. And that's how our past literally dies as we grow older. Alvin and the Chipmunks, Centurions, Plastic Man... hell, even the now infamous Scrappy-Doo, I LOVED him as a kid. All those repetitions were a great part of my '90s childhood and a means to bond with my older brother. This is really sad to be honest.

    1. It really sucks to lose a legend like him. A lot of shows I grew up were his creations and were great to watch. At least the creations he made will live on. That is the way I think men and women like him should be celebrated.

RIP Joe Ruby. Gotta say, we got Kung Fu Cutman plus other YouTube content and a glimpse at X in animation long before Day of Sigma (or even X3's FMV cutscenes). Kudos there, even if the show is considered critically spotty.

  4. Ruby-Spears Mega Man will always be close to my heart. This is sad news, but at least he seems to have lived a good life.

As a good buddy of mine said, let's pour out an Energy Can for Mr. Ruby.

    1. Yeah. The pilot didn't generate enough interest to justify it.
