"Mega Man: The Wily Wars Collector's Edition" Announced

27-years in-the-making, The Wily Wars is finally getting a physical cartridge release in North America. Capcom, Limited Run Games and RetroBit are proud to announce Mega Man: The Wily Wars Collector's Edition!

Inside this lovely package, you'll find the game printed on a genuine, translucent "Blue Bomber" cartridge compatible with Sega Mega Drive and Genesis consoles, reversible cartridge sleeves, a full-color instruction manual, ventricular cards, a 16"x12" poster, a sticker collection booklet and MORE!

Cool stuff, right? Oh, it gets a little better. RetroBit have taken the liberty of boosting the game's performance. It now runs at a consistent 60fps with little to no slowdown. It runs better than the original NTS-J version, no less!

  1. Man that's cool but...I wish they use the Genesis box art instead of mega drive one....

  2. 50? hey is that the rate it ran in the MegaDrive/Genesis Mini version? If so I get something else to blame for my bad reaction times.

  3. I don't have a Genesis, but I might buy this anyway.

  4. Starts to walk by this post but is stopped dead in his tracks by 60fps enhancement! o3o

Now if only I had a Genesis... but, damn, I gotta at least check that out in action. I've always wanted to like Wily Wars, but it chugs so hard!

  5. I hope they release a standard version, I want the game but don't care for the price tag or extra knickknacks tagged on.

  6. They should've put it on a switch cartridge. I don't have or want a genesis, but on modern hardware, I'd jump in on a preorder

    1. I agree. If they were to release this on PS4 and Switch, I would definitely preorder in seconds. Not to be rude toward any retro gamers out there, but who even has their old Genesis hooked up nowadays? This whole cartridge business in modern times is really just too weird.

    2. That one is pretty clearly a niche item targeted at a audience of collector rather than a intent to port the game.

  8. I wish they had a Switch option since I don't have a Genesis (I wasn't even born until 2001), but it is very tempting to buy this anyway...

  9. So apparently Strictly Limited is also partnering on this?
I've been confused on how this is being sold, are they sold on all three sites? are there exclusive collectors editions?

  10. Wow, this is an amazing deal considering the original goes for almost $1k these days. The collectibles are nice too.

  11. I thought there was going to be a figure with this. That is what the original announcement and pictures showed a year ago...

  12. Seventy US dollars for a limited edition, never-before-released physical copy of a Japan and Europe-only game from 1994 for a console I don't have?
    Golly gee! What a bargain!!

In all seriousness, who is this marketed toward, exactly? If someone really wants this "rare game" on real hardware, I doubt they'd go for a reproduction that comes with some tacky merchandise. Or, if they just want the software part, that's not at all hard to figure out. And I bet this release isn't even the original "NTSC-U" version, either. (I'm not even sure the Sega Channel version was, for that matter.) I bet it's tweaked PAL software made to run at 60hz for NTSC TVs – a relatively easy thing to do in the game modification community.
(There's also mods for faster shots, enabling sliding in all games, and allowing cross-game weaponry, but never mind.)

    Also…
    > It now runs at a consistent 60fps with little to no slowdown.

… well? Which is it? Either it runs at a consistent 60 FPS – which, from looking at the video, it absolutely does not – or it runs with "little-to-no slowdown". Yeh canneh have it both ways, lad.
Still, I am curious how they managed that. Did they slap a secondary CPU chip on the cart to take the load off the Motorola 68000 chip? Maybe they found a random ROM hack floating around out there which cleans up the dirty assembly code? The world may never know~ I just know it's not that hard to just tweak the console's M68000 to run a little faster and completely eliminate the slowdown.

You know what? I take it back. I'm excited for this to come out.
Specifically, I'm excited to see this thing dumped and analyzed to see what kind of bait-and-switch shenanigans these shysters pulled and how.

And that's my 50 Zenny on this topic. Thank you for your time, whoever reads this.

    1. I'm pretty sure it's marketted towards collectors like myself. I got the mega man board game with no intention of playing it, just to have it on display with my other mega man swag.

I plan on getting this and never playing it too, though I am also excited for the dump

    2. It's targeted at collectors. I might get it for the same reason i get a Mega Man figure when i see one that looks good. It's a nice piece of Mega Man collectible.
for playing retro games, there's emulation for that. My old genesis does'nt even work anymore.

    3. Would you believe that I wasn't even thinking about the future collector's value? I was legitimately thinking that people were gonna buy it and play it. That's a little embarrassing on my part, I have to admit. It makes a lot more sense as a collector's item, definitely.

  13. Wasnt there originally an elec man figure teased with this? thats a shame. would have loved a good figure of Elec Man.
