Fans Take to Recreating Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version in 2D

While fans all over the world would love nothing more than for Capcom to continue the development of Mega Man Legends 3, the tenacious Facebook group 100,000 Strong For Bringing Back Mega Man Legends 3 have decided to take matters into their own hands.

In collaboration with Japanese community DASH 3 Reboot, 100,000 Strong will remake the ill-fated Prototype Version in the visual style of the 8-bit Mega Man games. Joining them in their efforts are two big-name Mega Man staff members. The first is Hideki Ishikawa; former Capcom character designer and illustrator. He will be handling the game's box art. The other is Makoto Tomozawa, the main music composer for the Mega Man Legends series. He will be composing a few tracks exclusive to this project.

The trailer above shows off a work-in-progress version. For the game to reach completion, however, a bit of funding is necessary. If you'd like to contribute to the cause, then you can PayPal whatever you’re willing to chip in to milktea(at)milcoco.net. Everyone who contributes, regardless of how much, will recieve a digital copy of the game when it's completed. Donating $50 USD or more nabs you a physical copy as well as your name in the credits.

The faster the donation goal is reached, the sooner the game will launch. They're hoping to have it up some time or around August. A playable demo will on-hand to download in the coming weeks.

  1. Before anyone complains, bear in mind the fund goal is probably split for Ishikawa and Tomozawa. 500 each.

  3. I'm so tired of 8-bit. Couldn't we have gone 16 or 32 bit? We already have existing reaverbot sprites from Namco x Capcom as well as Project X Zone as well as Volnutt...

Graphic complaint aside, I'm not really impressed with what I'm seeing. I don't feel the legends vibe coming from it at all. It feels more like Classic with Zero controls and a half assed Legends skin slapped on.

    1. Eight bit is cheap. For a fan project that's not going to be making profit (needing funding is not the same as gaining profit) you really shouldn't be surprised they're taking the cheap option.

  6. If this weren't a GMOTM-associated project, I'd have supported it.

    I can't stand those punks.

      Part 1:

Where to begin, is the better question. I'll copy-paste one of my old comments from TMMN when they (100k Strong/GMOTM) was demanding money for the Mega Rock Fan Festa thing.

"Sorry to sound like the pessimist about it, but having 100k Strong be involved in anything of this nature, ESPECIALLY with them yet again pulling the “Oh we need donations” bulljive again, is just giving major ugly vibes.
It seems whenever they want to do a thing, it’s all “OH GIVE US MONEY AND WE WILL DO THIS THING…. MAYBE…. SOMEDAY…. EVENTUALLY….” for a vague cause or hope spot, that they will go on and blow up into something that either clearly wouldn’t ever happen (Reika singles album sales being used as MML3 Prototype revival blackmail rumor, anyone?), something that they are requesting vastly higher funds than necessary (Rocket Launch campaign), then delaying said event multiple times with a cop-out bullhockey excuse that they could easily have resolved by just changing location or using their brains for longer than .2 seconds (constant last minute delays of Rocket Launch), random bullhooey excuses or outright ignoring of comments asking about supposed footage of this Launch that may or may not have even happened, and other overall fishy things in the past. (Random spike from 80k to actual 100k Likes in less than a few weeks when it took many months to even reach 70k since initial launch of group, asking donations for ad revenue, overall mean spirited attitude towards members, etc.)
These people should not be allowed anywhere near a kind of event such as this, if they are going to continue to pour baseless lies in the guise of vague rumors (whilst fueling them when they get expanded upon to unrealistic proportions), treat majority of their supporters like they’re nothing but numbers, and overall be the very reason why Mega Man Legends 3 will never be EVER revived."

Skybane (who is the LAST person on their group who should ever be saying anything in response to comments, seeing how he's a large majority of what's giving this group such a bad reputation amongst smart people) made some sort of response about trying to say "Oh we have support from such and such people". And here was my response to that:

"All that, and in the end, basically amounts to nothing but “support”. Nothing of actual importance has happened, nor has anything you people (and it’s funny that it’s you, the last person from the group who should be saying anything knowing your history. If this were on the FB page, you’d have sent your blinded fanboys after the guy and then deleted the post after it reaches 40 comments of them just flipping their bajeebers at him) actually changed the situation of MML3.
Other gaming causes? You know what they did differently than 100k Strong? They actually succeeded. Operation Rainfall got all 3 of it’s games to be released. The Mass Effect 3 ending campaign got Extended Cut DLC.
You know what else these campaigns did differently? From the very start, they never, EVER, lowered the heat on the company(s) they wanted to get their stuff done.
What did 100k suggest? “Oh, be civil and don’t be angry at Capcom” and all that hoopdy scoopdy bull.
And look where that’s brought us to now. Your people making up fake rumors or unwarranted hype for “projects” that we never get actual word of the details until long after you’ve gotten your money from the gullible fans, which then amounts to nothing more than “support” from people who, in all honesty, have NOTHING in terms of power or say in the matter.
Any anyone who does, doesn’t want anything to do with this “movement” or “cause”, because they Capcom of Japan’s people have made it clear they don’t want to do any sort of new Megaman or Rockman projects, let alone bringing back one that they’ve long since abandoned and used it’s corpse for other games. (EX Troopers and Gaist Crusher)"

      Part 2:

Even another user by the name of Trigger, had this to say in response to me:

"Thank you, Amir. You made my points for me, and quite nicely too. Well written.
Talk is indeed cheap, Skybane. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all 100,000 Strong has done so far. All the points of interest you brought up have been extremely low-profile when compared to the widespread coverage/support Operation Rainfall received for its ENTIRE duration. (For example, AlphaOmegaSin was ranting about supporting Rainfall every chance he got.)
We don’t need friendly faces flashing our name and cause on a screen for a few minutes; that’s what companies do for advertising. We don’t need names on what essentially amounts to an online petition; if that worked, Facebook would be recognized as a legitimate social change engine. We don’t need model rockets. We don’t need Reika Morishita songs from games over a decade old, as good as those games and songs may still be. And we certainly don’t need a miserably mediocre “concept album”, 90% of whose content was created by a single artist (effectively showcasing just how little actual support really exists in that “hundred thousand strong”).
You go ahead and talk to your celebrities and important people. Go right ahead and try to push Legends 3 through the “proper” channels by using what little influence your group has actually managed to leverage for itself. The fact remains that we will never see Legends 3 revived through “civil” means. Either we push, and push hard, or we will live to see a lifetime Legends-free. Throw the tomatoes or get the hell off the lawn, but don’t stand around offering Capcom your bushel, because they’ve already made it abundantly clear they’re not interested.
Operation Rainfall didn’t need donations or publicity stunts. I suggest taking a few pointers from them."

    5. There's nothing that can be done now.

All the damage these people have done to the cause is done. It's over. Time to move on, as sad as it sounds.

As I and Trigger in our old comments have already stated, it's been way too long now for any actions from fans to make any real impact to Capcom of Japan now, within legal boundaries. Because we all sat back and were civil and all that shit, as corporations who only speak either in money or HUGE public outcry that never lets up and causes them major loss, they seen our silence as acceptance and "not caring" for the MegaMan/Rockman brand to have their big canned game come back from development.

It's already been shown that the scraps that were remaining have been used in titles such as EX Troopers and Gaist Crusher, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the DASH 3 development team was in those games' credits.

All we can do now is either ignore, or spread the word to others stop supporting 100k Strong, because they seem to have no shame in having US, the fans, pay for THEIR crap that doesn't benefit anyone other than themselves.
That's like if I went and made a Donation drive and asked for $600 so I can go buy a Wii U Deluxe and the next Super Smash Bros for Wii U and the 3DS version because "you guys will get tons of coverage, combo videos and indepth information on the game and MegaMan". Oh, and I'd throw in a keychain of me giving a thumbs up and it'd have a box or something for those who donated $50 or more. Cause that's essentially what these 100k Strong people are doing.

But knowing how this fanbase is, I doubt anyone is gonna listen, anyways. Just like how you aren't. :3

    6. Man, you're a whiny jerk. The world hardly needs such cynics as you clogging up my favorite news sites, especially when they give stupid answers to decent questions. "What can we do now?" "Oh, nothing, since it's over and you're all stupid whiny sheep-babies."

    7. You know, I actually have to agree with Amir, and Trigger as well, especially after reading all this.

I've wanted Legends 3 for awhile. I loved the series, and still do. And while I was very upset and angry at Capcom for what they did, and still am, I've also since moved on. I've said this time and time again. I would like Legends 3 to be revived, but I also know that it's too much of a thing to wish for. When 100k Strong began, I watched it silently from the sidelines. I didn't really wanted to participate in it, not like I even have a Facebook anyway. But I was content just watching. And after seeing and hearing all these things, I'm actually kind of glad that I didn't associate myself to that group.

TBH, the Legends fandom has kind of been giving me a bad taste ever since Legends 3 was cancelled. There's a few more um... 'good' folks out there in it, but nowadays I prefer to keep myself away from the fandom as a result of all the... well, whining going on. I'm frankly more concerned about the state of the whole franchise as a whole, not one series that is barely known or popular. Maybe once Capcom actually starts caring about MM, if that ever happens of course, maybe then I will wonder about Legends. But I still wouldn't devote my whole life to it either. It is what it is.

Honestly, maybe Capcom shouldn't have hyped it at all. What they did was a stupid move on their part, announcing the damn game months before they could even try to green-light it. If they had kept its development all of it in secret, none of this would be happening. But then Capcom wouldn't have done it if they didn't have 'us lackeys to build the game for them' as CoE so suggested. Just can't win.

    8. I totally agree with you, Amir, but my view is a little different. I also left that campaign as of last month because they kept removing my comments for unfair reasons. I had 6 comments in total removed. I DID swear on the first comment and got notified, and understood why, but the other 5 were not troll comments or bad language based. Once I said "I'm tired of waiting" and guess what? It got removed.

And yes, your right about how people bodyguard this group even when I said "I'm not being mean or anything but..." and then loads of people just think "Bull shit! remove it!". And I supported that page for 3 years and even got about 15 people to like that page. That campaign only wants GOOD comments and cannot take criticism even for 5 seconds. Its like c'mon, I cant believe they can't even accept "I'm tired of waiting"

As a whole we never get megaman legends 3 back. Keiji tried to bring it back, a nice celebrity called Reika Morishita tried, public stunts by random guys, and NOTHING happened. I like Keiji and Reika, but seriously, they are the ones with the highest level of authority and they couldn't do anything. I assume that even if someone like the president of japan asked capcom to make megaman legends 3 because he/she wanted it, bet you capcom would say no. And I'm very sure these 2 nice people have moved on from this. Its been THREE years and yet the campaign smiles it off. In 3 years, I literally got a university degree and what did the campaign achieve!? Nothing. Not even that demo.

Capcom is almost bankrupt anyway, so they can't make it anymore. The whole objective of this petition is to get CAPCOM to make it, not anyone else, so that 100K strong page has failed and won't get it made by capcom. This petition is pointless now. I rest my case.

  7. I'd be more excited if it wasn't 8-bit. I'm getting tired of all these fan-games always being 8-bit.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Here's the thing, though, Kenichi. Fans don't necessarily have the resources as big name video game publishers and developers do. As such, they have to use whatever resources they have available to them, which is why the vast, vast majority of Mega Man fan games you see are of the 8-bit variety. And that, is ok; after all, as mentioned, the fans don't have the time nor the resources to hastily put out a product with higher graphical standards.

However, when a big name developer is the one who is ALWAYS defaulting to 8-bit instead of progressing forward when we ALL know they have both the time and the resources to do better? That, is when we have a problem. Capcom got a pass on Mega Man 9 because, hey, let's have fun for nostalgia's sake! But then came Mega Man 10 and that got people more confused because while they could understand the 8-bit aesthetic for 9 being around for old time's sake, this was pushing it. And then, the dam broke with Street Fighter X Mega Man. Yes, we ALL know at this point that it was originally a fan game. However, the key point in that last sentence was originally; with Capcom officially backing it and lending its resources to its development, we should have gotten something far better than 8-bit. Instead, all we got, really, was a fan-game with a bit more fluff to it because OFFICIAL BACKING, WHOOOO!!!

Now, I like 8-bit as much as the next person and, again, if it is coming from the fans, I full understand that they are making the best of things with what they got. But if Capcom can't get with the times and do something more, then they really have gone from one of gaming's greats to a gigantic, incompetent mass of fail. Bare in mind, this is all coming from what used to be one of Capcom's staunchest supporters and while I can never say I HATE Capcom, I am gravely disappointed in what they have been reduced to.

    ReplyDelete
  9. And then Capcom writes a cease and desist order to all parties involved.

But seriously, this seems a little... silly. The fact that two people who've actually worked on the commercial series are on board is absolutely, genuinely impressive! But... yeah. 8-bit. Just a bit overdone at this point. And to call this a 2D remake (or "demake") of the DASH 3 prototype seems like a stupid thing to say. Sure, you can transfer the story and characters perfectly fine. Maybe even some of the battles. But not the whole of the gameplay.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I understand that recreating an entire 3D game is a very long and difficult task, but I still can't really say I'm entirely happy seeing this in 8-bit.

Why capcom shy away if they can make the real thing than fan made, they should continue wat they promise making megaman 11-14 or 4 more chapters of megamanzero after inafune left capcom they dont know wat to do to megaman capcom should put him back or make him make the game again in his new company :P

  18. Capcom is dying and pulls the blue bomber down into a wet and deep grave. They never gave a damn about him and won't do it now. It is no surprise that the "Save Megaman Legend 3" train is gone or derailed a long time ago, but how does the future looks like? Capcom cancelled so many Megaman games in the past... face it, he won't come back from their side, but only from fan's side. The only thing we get, is virtual versions on each console in the solar universe for X times, because that's what Capcom loves to do; milking the fans and most of them are willing to give, which makes me mad.
