Early in development, the project was framed as a Mega Man–centric golf game, tentatively titled Mega Man & Capcom Golf, but that direction did not last long. A source familiar with the project says the concept evolved into a broader Capcom crossover, moving away from Mega Man as the central figure while still keeping him prominently featured. From that point on, the project was known as Capcom Golf.
The central gimmick of Capcom Golf was that characters played using their signature weapons and abilities rather than traditional clubs. Mega Man used his Mega Buster, Frank West swung a spiked bat, and other Capcom characters were explored in similarly playful ways. How Phoenix Wright would have approached the sport remains an unsolved case.
“The courses were at first based on different Mega Man environments, like a factory, and then some other places from Dead Rising, Devil May Cry, and so on,” the source said. “It was a 2D perspective, aiming for home consoles, but it could have easily scaled to mobile.”
Like many proposed projects from Capcom Vancouver, Capcom Golf now exists only in fragments. The project never advanced into full production, ultimately becoming another casualty of the studio’s closure. What can be shared today is limited to a small selection of concept art by Julianna Michek, a freelance artist commissioned to work on the title (more of her work can be found here).

That's so cool to see, since it's pretty different from a lot of Capcom's catalog. It could have all kinds of characters in its roster and nice remixes of classic tunes while being a mostly simple and fun game. I kind of wish Capcom could reconsider such a project in the future, as I would like to play such a game.
ReplyDeleteAh, that's unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteCapcom finally made a good call rofl even if it was from budget cuts ill believe nothing else. 🤣
ReplyDeleteGood. I hate Golf. And unnecessary spin offs.
ReplyDelete*laughing* You're always so blunt. I love it.
DeleteI feel the same. Let's keep up with sequels to main timeline games, not goofy MM sports or gacha nonsense. No one wants that. Let's do it like MM12 is doing. That's the way. Now let's continue, X, ZX, and Legends, maybe even an all new series between ZX and Legends (many could fit between there with such a large timeline gap). First we just have to hope MM12 (override) isn't canned. I think it will make it like MM11 did.
DeleteMaybe as a free mobile game, otherwise, i don't think people would pay for it
ReplyDeleteAnother day, another cancelled Mega Man game
ReplyDeleteI kinda lament this evolving into a full on Capcom crossover: this would’ve been very novel with specifically the Mega Man formula applied. Similar to Battle & Chase, Soccer, that mobile puzzle game, et cetera.
ReplyDeleteIn general, I think hip-fired low budget games is what Mega Man is missing now, and has been missing for some time. Small, passionate teams on quick projects has always been the core of the series.
Yeah, no one cares about MM playing a sport.
ReplyDeleteNot worth the silly image macros, I guess. "Woo I'm Drill Man!"
DeleteI'm not much of a golf person, but this is cute to see.
ReplyDeleteI guess if the franchise is going to grow like Capcom wants it to, we need to explore how Mega Man sports would work. The success of Super Mario Strikers makes me want to see someone give Mega Man Soccer another chance. Can you imagine the glorious chaos that could occur on the field?
