Mega Man X6 may not be everyone’s first pick, but it definitely has a committed fanbase, and plenty of people have tried to polish it over the years through patches and mods. Still, we really haven’t seen anything quite like this.
Enter Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare. Developed by Cat Yard Games, it’s a full-on remake of X6 built in GameMaker Studio 2. Development only really ramped up in August, but the project is already making strong progress toward not just refining X6, but reimagining it.
As explained in the latest overview video, the armor system has been rebuilt from the ground up with mix-and-match loadouts, new armor abilities, purchasable Parts using Nightmare Souls (including brand-new ones), an updated Hunter Rank system, and even fresh story beats. Even if you’re not an X6 fan, there’s a lot of neat potential here.

Genuinely the sickest fan made megaman project i've seen all year.
ReplyDeleteI can't really say I count myself among the X6 fanbase, but judging just by this video alone, the remake already looks a lot better than the original.
ReplyDeleteCool project. I am conflicted. Half of me wants to play it. The other half never want's to play X6 EVER again.
ReplyDeleteI don't use Discord, so if the small chance the dev see's this:
I like the changes to Yammark if not overly padded for length. The fight seems longer than it should be.
Not a fan of the new "warning"
One thing X6 did I appreciated was the unique boss intros, I'll miss that.
Might allow for custom music. The Steam version let's me replace that one song I really, REALLY hate. There are fan remixes that are much better.
Also, might want to add an option to disable all screen dialogue, allow users to play fast with no interruption should they be so inclined.
that's ok bro we'll play it on your behalf
DeleteYou sure? It's like asking someone to take your place for a colonoscopy...
DeleteAs a big fan of X6, I really don't like this... it seems like it realizes nearly every pipe dream someone had for X6, but that's the issue. X6 is a very specific game in its design, and that lends itself to both pushing many players away, and yet also presenting a very unique approach to design that nearly every aspect of the game lends itself to.
ReplyDeleteThis fangame, on the other hand, seems to be willing to break everything about that solely to create an experience more appealing for an X series fan; at that point, is this even X6? The bosses seem like they were folded into generic indie game design aspects, with "overdrive" attacks in particular being terrible, and the new mechanical aspects seem to remove a lot of existing interactions between mechanics that X6 had, purely in favor of easily "consumable" things like a shop, or armors with overpowered abilities.
The stage design in the one stage that was shown is full of things that I'd consider questionable, but beyond everything, it lacks X6's tendency to combine several obstacles at once to create exciting situations, and how the original stage lended itself to a good flow, so it just ends up being a very tasteless X series-esque stage in the fangame. I don't want to disrespect the developers, but I think X6 is good for what it is, not for being possible to mangle into what it's not. Even the mission report menu is gone...
I’m mixed on this. I like the charge dash, and the boss fight when he isn’t off screen for several seconds, but aside that? Eh… The camera movement really stands out the most (in a bad way). Just feels very obviously like a Gamemaker game, which is jarring compared to actual X6. Even something like X8 Demake has more distance and plausible deniability compared to the source game. Also not a fan of the orange mantis (doesn’t seem like how a Mega Man enemy should work), and the injured reploids being from all levels (what’s the point? The consistent designs told you what level they were from. Unless they’re all gonna be unique. Maybe have all 8 reploid types but with the palette of the native reploid).
ReplyDeleteLmao what the fluff are these comments, people are crapping on a remake for X6 and for what, one of the worst Megaman games ever made, please y'all take off your nostalgia glasses, X6 sucks, period.
ReplyDeleteI have no nostalgia for X6, and I stand by my viewpoints because of playing all the X series games for a long time now and having issues with what I see in the preview videos, so your strawman is silly.
