Where Are the Virtual Console Game Boy Mega Man Games?

The 3DS Virtual Console in North America and Europe are still without the previously announced Game Boy Mega Man titles. In Japan, meanwhile, 3DS owners are readying wallets for Rockman World 4. So, what's the hold up?

Capcom Unity's Brett Elston took to the Ask Capcom forums to field this very question. While no specific release dates could be given, Brett wants everyone to bear a few things in mind. He writes:

"Alas no concrete date set yet, but I'm looped into the process and it is moving forward. Couple things to keep in mind with this:

1 - I wanted to get the word out really early on this since it was cool news. The downside is that means a longer wait, primarily because...

2 - These are just a handful of titles in Nintendo's busy VC schedule. There are new titles releasing each week so that means a bit of a bottleneck. We basically announced these games as soon as it was possible to do so, which means anything already in the pipeline is ahead of all six MM GB titles.

To clarify: www.capcom-unity.com/brelston/blog/2013/...

MMII~V, Xtreme and Xtreme 2 are all coming. MMX2 (SNES) is a likely candidate given that it was on Wii's VC, but no update just yet."

In short, the ball's in Nintendo's court. In the meantime we'll keep an ear to the ground and wait for the good word. Stay tuned!

Hidden Level Editor Discovered in Rockman 8 Alpha Version

Hey, you remember that really early alpha build of Rockman 8 we released some years ago, right? It turns out there's something pretty neat tucked away in the code. A one Mark G. discovered an unused stage editor, accessible through a debug menu, which is far more functional than the one in the second beta. Furthermore, it's possible to test any modifications in real-time!

But how does one without ASM hacking know-how get to fiddle around with these neat tools? Fortunately, Mark has created a modified ISO of the alpha build, which contains this newly-discovered functionality, along with any details needed to properly use it. Feel free to download it here. Be sure to check out the included README file!

Mark also hopes to reverse engineer these tools into a PC application, thereby opening the doors to Mega Man 8 inspired fan-games. We'll keep you posted on future developments!

Inafune Says He's Open to Capcom Publishing Mighty No. 9

The new November issue of Game Informer magazine (#247) features an interview with none other than Keiji Inafune, as he addresses a few topics regarding Mighty No. 9. When ask about what he would do if Capcom proposed to publish the title, Inafune said "I would hear their terms. If they had the best terms, I would go with Capcom."

He adds, "There is no reason not to publish with Capcom, and I certainly don’t feel like there’s a reason that I have to publish with Capcom. Literally it would be a very cut-and-dried business negotiation. If they had the best terms, the logical businessman in me would say, “Yes, let’s go with them."

Game Informer then brought up another point of interest: would Inafune willingly reskin Mighty No. 9 as a Mega Man game as a result of that?

"If Capcom came up with really great terms to make it a Mega Man game, then of course I would listen and that would be an option. But the base of this game is that we wanted to create something original. If they gave us an offer we couldn’t refuse, that would mean having to change the main character into Mega Man. On top of that, it would still have to be our IP, which is what we want. I can’t foresee that happening. We really want this to be our thing."

Mind you, this is all hypothetical. However, Inafune is not simply a creator -- he's a business man. Should Capcom actually approach him with a deal -- the "best deal" -- I don't believe he would show much hesitation. Nevertheless, this is an interesting topic to think about. I mean, how would you feel if Mighty No. 9 found itself in Capcom's hands? Would you accept the title as a reconstituted Mega Man game?
