Udon’s
Mega Man X Timelines #1 and
Mega Man Zero Timelines #1 are expected to launch later this summer—sometime between July and August, if all goes according to plan. In the meantime, to keep your appetite whet, Udon has released a handful of preview pages from both issues. You can check them out
here,
here, or after the break below!
Those look so much better. The preview pages for the fist book were very off putting, to me anyway.
ReplyDeleteI find it amusing to see all these Maverick Hunters and analysts freaking out over Chill Penguin clowning in the snow (yeah, I know his actual goal was to cause an avalanche near the X1 city).
ReplyDeletePretty cool that the Zero issue is taking place during Zero 2 though. Not sure about the New Resistance Base being in a desert. I hope the artist can show the harbor side, if the chance arises.
Here's hoping they stick the landing with the stories as well.
ReplyDeleteELPIZO
ReplyDeleteIan Flynn coming in with the Zero 2 adaption!? How does this guy know exactly what I want to read? So excited.
ReplyDeleteI'd be willing to bet it actually takes place in the time gap between Megaman Zero and Megaman Zero 2. Probably right after Elpizo joined the Resistance

DeleteYou might be on to something. The base is clearly under construction still, and those Pantheon variants aren’t in Sand Wilderness normally.
I just wish the base wasn’t in the desert. Though it’s better for a streamlined story. It’s not like the specific biome where the New Resistance Base is located really matters.
It is a wonder why Elpizo has a helmet that covers one side of the face. Guess I didn't give it much thought or it often was not as obvious until this pic. Surely he can see out of two eyes. One could assume a screen exists in the helmet over one eye.
ReplyDeletemaybe he doesn't have a 2nd eye, a lot of reploids resemble humans but not all so it's possible Elpizo just has 1 eye
DeleteBoth these art styles look really good
ReplyDeleteI draw manga style art and i have to say the style looks great.
ReplyDeleteGee i was going to create a semi realistic artstyle now after seeing this i think i'l go back to my old manga drawing style which is stylised
ReplyDeleteI'm cant wait for to see ZX and Legends (Dash) preview pages... I'm think the Legends art HQ will be very great but ZX... (sigh)
ReplyDeleteObs. I didn't mean the artist is bad, okay? It's cuz that art dont really fit with ZX.
Very odd art for both (X's "meme faces", Dr. Light seemingly being based on his X8 depiction, Zero and X in general looking like an awkward mix of Suetsugu-like art and 2000s anime, Fefnir's action pose looking like the bottom half of it doesn't match how the top half is drawn, Harpuia's shonen anime lunge), the X1 preview pages feel like a fan comic in how much of it seems to be based on depicting gameplay moments step by step in an almost funny way, when something like Iwamoto's manga would often adapt game elements in new scenarios and make substories with new characters.
ReplyDeleteThe Zero one mostly being Zero 2's intro turned from a unique moment into a glorykill montage is also not very promising. In general, the fact that those working on this chose to depict the same "X encounters the first Dr. Light capsule" concept that fanworks and even some official works have tackled is unfortunate. These could have been about anything, yet instead they focus on these same few things talked about so often. It's like if instead of having a new side character made up or at least focusing on ones that didn't get much focus, it would all have been the X2 biker because "GREEN BIKER DUDE??? REMEMBER???"
I am sorry if I come off as too negative and judgemental of what's just preview pages, but I don't like the fan culture surrounding the stories of these games much, nor the direction these comics seem to take.
Archie did the same thing with turning gameplay into action scenes. I guess it’s just what American comics do with Mega Man in a mostly game-accurate setting (so not counting Dreamwave or Fully Charged). And yeah, Udon and Archie both have Flynn, though I don’t think he’s doing the X issue…
DeleteI agree the X issue seems kinda conceptually blanche. The first Light Capsule is cute, it’s fine. But aside from that, Chill Penguin’s stage is unremarkable. Most other X1 levels have more context: commandeered workplaces and besieged ports. The game never really elaborated (even MHX), but they carry a bigger sense of world. Were the original workers at the Factory forcefully removed? Are there stories of displaced working class Reploids swept up in the Maverick Hunter/Sigma conflict? What about the shipping lanes blockaded by Launch Octopus? Is that effecting availability of essential goods in the city? There are still *humans* in that city after all.
But no, just the Snow Mountain, with abandoned buildings, a (literally) toothless Maverick, and a bad 80’s cartoon plot.
